In our last game away at Cobham we managed to pick up our 3rd win in 5 games which has helped us climb from 17th to 13th in the league. It was not our best performance by any stretch of the imagination, but we worked hard for 90 minutes, managed to keep a clean sheet and Ross Murray scored with a good finish midway through the second half to secure the 3 points. Although we have lost recent games to Frimley and Mole Valley, we worked hard as a team in both games and held our own against two of the better sides in the league. I believe that with a little bit of luck we may have also been rewarded with a point or two and this shows what an improvement we have made this season. Whilst 13th is obviously not as high as we would like to be in the league, if we are able to maintain the commitment and performance levels that we have produced since the turn of the year, I am confident we can secure a comfortable mid table finish come the end of the season. Our main aim for the rest of this season is to finish as high up the table as possible to give ourselves the chance of qualifying for next seasons FA Cup. We also want to continue to improve as we have done in the five months that we have been at the club, and ensure that we have a good base to build on for next season. Since joining the club back in September we have seen many players join and leave the club which has been difficult to manage and at times we have struggled to name a side with three subs. In recent months we have managed to assemble a good squad of players. The quality of player we have been able to bring into the club has been matched by their commitment and a will to do well which has given everyone a big boost. For the first time we are able to call upon a number of players who are all capable of performing at a high level and we are able to make changes to the starting eleven without weakening it. This has enabled us to find a much better level of consistency and I believe that has been paramount to our change in fortunes. Whilst it is not always easy to keep people happy, everyone knows that there is a lot of football to be played this season and it will take a squad to ensure we do as well as we can. Everyone is pulling in the same direction at the club, from youths, reserves, first team and the committee, and we are all confident that we are heading in the right direction and will continue to improve to get Knaphill back to where they were only a few seasons ago.

Combined Counties League Division One, Tuesday 5th January, Redding Way Kick Off 7.30pm

Despite this narrow defeat by Mole Valley on Tuesday night, Knaphill had put enough effort into the game to deserve a share of the spoils. After scoring an early goal, Knaphill then conceded a giveaway goal in the first half, and a breakaway goal in the second . But they were unlucky with two efforts near the end which could have given them an equaliser. However, following Saturday’s win over Sheerwater, it was Knaphill who started the sharper side and took the lead in the fifth minute when Charlie Postance ran onto a through pass, and held off the challenge of a defender, to slot home. But the lead was short lived, as Mole Valley equalised after nine minutes when a bit of dithering between defenderJamie Doble and keeper James McArthur, allowed Chris Page to waltz round both players to slip the ball in the net. On 21 minutes, McArthur denied Mole Valley with a good save, then another visitors effort hit the side netting. Knaphill went close to regaining the lead in the 27th minute when James Felgate’s shot was deflected for a corner. Both sides had further chances, but the honours were even with the 1-1 scoreline by halftime. Postance had an opportunity for Knaphill ten minutes into the second half, but the effort was wide of the post. It was a swift breakaway by the visitors that led to their second goal after 62 minutes, when Page netted again to make it 2-1. Knaphill however kept pushing hard to find the equaliser and in the latter stages of the game put more pressure on the Mole Valley defence. In the 81st minute Matt Edwards was unlucky when his header was cleared off the line, then in the dying minutes, Timmy Taylor delivered a dipping long range effort which struck the bar, and the last chance fell to Postance who from close range scooped the ball over. Knaphill now look ahead to the next game when they face new leaders Frimley Green at the Recreation Ground on Saturday. Knaphill: McArthur, Green, T.Taylor, Alighieri, Doble, Edwards, L.Taylor, Roissetter(Coats 82mins), Ruggles(Murray 74mins), Postance, Felgate(Pilley 66mins).

    Theknappers

Good afternoon everyone and today we welcome the players, officials and supporters from Banstead Athletic for their first ever visit to Redding Way, with this game being only the second meeting between the two Clubs. Having been relegated from the Premier Division last season, Banstead are in the Division One for the first time since entering the Combined Counties League, they were previously in the Ryman League. Knaphill’s visit to Banstead at the end of September resulted in a 1-1 draw with Charlie Postance being our goalscorer. Last Saturday, Banstead’s game against Feltham was postponed, and they now find them-selves in the bottom three – and we certainly know how that feels! For Knaphill, it’s good to get out of the basement in Division One as we moved up two places to 13th following the 1-0 win at Cobham, the third win from our last five games. Since our last home game, the midweek defeat by Mole Valley, Knaphill were away to Frimley

Green two weeks ago, and lost 3-0 to the league leaders. The home side hung onto a single

goal lead gained in the first half, then after 72 minutes made it 2-0 from a penalty, and later

added a third. Knaphill then had Joe Green sent off, leaving the visitors with ten men for

nearly twenty minutes of the game.

Following the defeat at Frimley, the team bounced back in the hard fought win away to

Cobham, who like us, have had some struggling periods this season. After a goalless first half,

Peter Biggs threaded a pass through to Ross Murray who fired Knaphill into the lead after 53

minutes. Several chances came during the half, three of them being denied by some good

saves by the Cobham keeper. But in the end, Knaphill’s single goal reaped a worthy three

points, and hopefully this win and a move up the table, will encourage the team to take

advantage of our home territory and gain more points in the two games here at Redding Way

today and again next week. Match reports on the Frimley Green and Cobham games can be

    found elsewhere in this programme.

Knaphill have now played 23 games, with six wins and 19 points, and looking ahead with

eleven more league games to play, it would be pleasing to make the points total a little more

respectable from those forthcoming fixtures. What has been good during February so far,

including the three wins, is that Knaphill have played four successive games without

interference from the weather, against Sheerwater, Mole Valley, Frimley Green and Cobham.

This month’s fixtures finish with a visit next Saturday 2nd March from bottom club CB Hounslow, a Club we also still have to play away. Another club we will be playing twice is Farleigh Rovers, home and away in March. Farleigh have only played 16 games to date, in their 34 match programme. Today, Knaphill Reserves play their first league game for seven weeks in the visit to Worcester Park Reserves, the last league game being played on the 5th January. Knaphill Youth U18s, prior to Tuesday’s home game against Cove, had played only one match since middle of November, and during March and April the U18s will be facing seven league games all at home. Also hit by the weather, Knaphill Ladies have played only one match since early December. NEWS IN BRIEF………Charter Standard: Knaphill Football Club have been awarded The FA Charter Standard Award by the Surrey County Football Association. The Club thank all involved for their hard work and time in this achievement, especially Nick Croshaw and David Freeman. End of Season: Knaphill will be holding their End of Season Dinner and Presentation Evening on Saturday 25th May 2013 at the West Byfleet Golf Club, more news and details on this event, including ticket prices, in the next programme. Floodlights: News of the extension of Floodlight hours at Redding Way which is currently going into the Planning stage and we’ll be hoping that permission will be granted for the extended use of more hours for matches in the forthcoming weeks. Bar: It is hoped a covenant can be overturned to allow the Club to have a Bar in the Club-house. Again, this is a long process, but light appears to be at the end of the tunnel. Weekly Bonus Ball is currently rolling along well, whilst the Last Man Standing enters its second week of the new session after no winner emerged from the previous run, which pro-duced a rollover. We are looking to increase the participants for this competition, and need more players to take part. And finally….Peter and Joan Annette, who held positions at the Club as Matchday Manager and Clubhouse Manager respectively, have resigned their positions with immediate effect. That’s about it for this week, back here next Saturday for the home fixture against CB Hounslow, which will be followed by a visit to Westfield on Tuesday 5th March. Meanwhile, enjoy today’s game…………..

    theknappers

Knaphill halted their run of five consecutive league defeats with a valuable point away to Banstead on Saturday. Having created numerous goal scoring chances, they could have come away with all three had their finishing been more accurate. But a late goal from Charlie Postance gave them a share of the spoils after they had gone behind on the hour from a rather harsh penalty decision that gave Banstead the lead on the hour. It wasn’t until the 20th minute that Knaphill delivered their first direct and telling shot goal when an effort from Postance was turned away for a corner. Then in quick succession during the 23rd minute, efforts from Daryn Hennessy and Phil Ruggles were both denied by the keeper. Despite creating more, Knaphill were unable to deliver the final finish to break the deadlock. Whilst the Banstead keeper had more to do, his opposite number Nick McGregor didn’t have a serious save to make until the 28th minute. With Ruggles still seeking to open his account up front for Knaphill, a 40th minute header was just over the bar, and their final threat on a goalless first half. In the second half, both sides battled away to make a breakthrough, and after 56 minutes Banstead almost struck the first blow, only for the effort to hit the bar. But four minutes later, they did take the lead with a rather harsh penalty decision. There were some scrappy moments in the half with both sides suffering from some stray passing. However, Knaphill pressed more in the latter stages of the game and in a crowded goal-mouth, Postance rose above the home defenders to head home the equaliser for the visitors after 85 minutes. A late chance came and went for Knaphill when substitute Kirk Smith saw his shot swerve wide of the post in the 90th minute. Team: McGregor, Cox, McShane, Perks(Roissetter 84mins), Doble, Niven, Hennessey, Felgate, Ruggles, Postance, Headland(Smith 67mins).

Following two creditable home displays, Knaphill’s visit to league leaders Frimley Green on Saturday, turned out to be a disappointing afternoon for the visitors. The result enhanced the home side’s position at the top, but Knaphill, after conceding a goal at the halfway stage of the first half, had their fair share of possession and effort put in the first forty five minutes, and with a bit more fortune, could have deservedly been on level terms. But it was in the second half that Knaphill suffered in more ways than one. The visitors had three players gaining an opportunity to open the scoring after 13 minutes, with Matt Edwards, Phil Ruggles and Timmy Taylor having a stab at goal, without success. Just a minute later at the other end the home side had a good chance, but the effort veered high and wide. Then after 21 minutes, Frimley Green took the lead. It fell to them rather fortuitously when an attempted clearance upfield by Jamie Double rebounded off Dan Simmonds who latched onto the ball and sped towards goal and the top goalscorer slipped past McGregor. But Knaphill launched into attacking mode following that goal and responded with determination putting in a couple of strikes in their bid for an equaliser. Ruggles delivered a telling shot which was parried away by the keeper, and Luke Taylor fired just wide of the far post. A handball in the 18 yard box by a Frimley defender, which clearly should have been a penalty for the visitors, was not given by the Referee. But despite the efforts, Knaphill were unable to get on level terms, whilst Frimley’s only other clear chance to extend their lead was denied by McGregor just before halftime. Frimley were being restricted to their slender one goal lead, until the 72nd minute, when Joe Green was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, and a penalty was awarded, with the spot kick despatched by Simmons to make it 2-0. Green was sent off for a second bookable offence following the penalty decision. Within four minutes, the home side increased their lead through Bobby Hogg. By this stage of the half, it was becoming a bit of a struggle for Knaphill as they lost some of their momentum and seemingly frustrated at the way the game was going, in comparison with their encouraging first half display. However, it was not to be Knaphill’s afternoon, but they are capable enough of bouncing back in their next match which is a visit to Cobham this Saturday, and hope their fortunes will be better as they seek some valuable points. Knaphill: McGregor, Green, Pilley(Coates 77mins), Edwards, Alighieri, Doble, L.Taylor, Roissetter(Dennison 80mins), Ruggles, Postance(Murray 57mins), T.Taylor.

Combined Counties League Division One, Saturday 16th February, Leg Of Mutton Field Kick Off 3.00pm

    Cobham 0 KNAPHILL 1 Murray 52

Knaphill came out on top of this encounter involving two teams that have seen some struggling periods during the season. The 1-0 win could have been a bigger margin had the Cobham keeper Andy Westphal not denied the visitors with three crucial saves, plus had Knaphill made several other scoring opportunities count, they would have stamped more authority on the game. But from Knaphill’s view, the team produced a clean sheet, only their second this season, and scored a crucial goal, and that equals three worthy points! The match started at quite a pace for both teams, with Knaphill looking more dangerous in the opening stages, Peter Biggs making his first full start for the visitors, looked sharp and penetrating , and after just three minutes his first effort on goal from 18 yards, veered wide of the post. In the tenth minute Cobham put in their first threat with an effort deflected away for a corner. A move by Knaphill via Doble, Edwards and Murray, finished with the latter shooting wide of the target after 16 minutes. On the half hour, Knaphill keeper Nick McGregor showed a quick reflex one hand save to deny Cobham striker Arnold Okiro. In the last fifteen minutes of the half, Knaphill seemed to drop off the pace, and allow Cobham to steer themselves more back into the game. The last shout of the first half came from Knaphill when Sam Dennison’s close opportunity was partially blocked and hooked over the bar. Knaphill opened the second half with two strong efforts from Ross Murray and Joe Green, only to be denied by the Cobham keeper, both within the space of two minutes. Then after 53 minutes, Biggs drilled a slick pass through for Murray to surge towards goal and give Knaphill the lead with a neat finish. Four minutes later, Green delivered an excellent strike but well saved by the keeper. Goalscorer Murray went close to a second goal in the 69thminute, but was denied by the outstretched leg of Westphal. At the other end it was Knaphill’s McGregor who had to be alert to finger tip Okiro’s shot to safety. Whilst Knaphill provided a bit of an on tenderhooks finish, Cobham failed to capitalise on their late burst, and the final whistle signalled a win for the visitors, which was their third from their last five games, lifting them up a couple of places in the league table. Knaphill: McGregor, Green, Pilley, Doble, Alighieri, Dennison(Taylor 46mins), Edwards, Murray, Ruggles(Postance 76mins), Biggs(Wetherall 67mins), Roissetter.

    Nick’s

    notes Youth Secretary Nick Croshaw

Knaphill’s impressive U18’s side continued their excellent form in the Southern Youth League with a six game unbeaten league and cup run from mid-September to the end of October, only stopped by a last gasp 3-2 defeat by Shalford. The year started with only three players returning from last year’s campaign with goal-keeper Crag Taylor, left-back Josh Dawber and this season’s captain, Jonny Coats. This meant a very different squad starting their first game in the Southern Youth League in late August at Godalming Town and how pleasing was it to see a fine 2-1 victory for the Knappers with young striker Mekhail McLaughlin getting both goals. This proved to be a false dawn however as trips to Farnham Town and Guildford City both ended in heavy defeats 2-4 & 1-4 respectively; the Knaphill goals from Stevie Kemp, Hamid Senousaoui & Jamal Rodney. The only consistency was that Jonny Coats came away with two ‘Man 0f the Match’ awards (given by the opposition) and three bookings. The youngsters needed to take a long look at themselves and look to repair the damage done to both their position in the table and the teams overall morale before their next game. That next match saw a long trip down to Cranleigh and a morale boosting 1-1 draw in a very tight game, played at 100mph and in a great spirit. Matt Willard made his debut in goal and helped keep the Knappers in the game whilst Jonny picked up his third MoM in 4 games. The fifth consecutive away game, due to issues with the use of the floodlights at Redding Way, saw a visit to Sandhurst Town and the fastest goals of the season so far as Jamal Rodney nipped in to score after just 21 seconds. A second goal from Jamal and a powerful Jakub Kurdziel header from the big defender saw a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time. However Sandhurst came storming back in the second half and with ten minutes left had the score at 3-2, again a big defensive effort held the home side at bay and the Knappers re-corded their second league win of the season. The league cup started with a Knaphill speciality, a 5 goal away win; recorded twice last season, with a trip to Cove ending with a 5-1 win against 10 men as the Cove keeper was sent-off for throwing the ball at a Knaphill player.

Goals from Stevie Kemp (2), Niall McInerney (2) and Robert Litchfield saw the Knappers safely home for a tie away to either Dorking or South Park. The first home league game of the season saw Ash United the visitors and a hard fought win after being behind early in the game. Strikes from Charlie Felicien and Niall McInerney got Knaphill past the first home game of the season with a deserved 2-1 win. Jonny picking up his 6th MoM in 7 games and no more yellows either! Back to Cove to face them in the league and it saw a very different match in some respects from the recent cup game; a 1-0 win was ground out after a poor 1st half display and a MoM winning performance from Matt Willard in goal; the wining goal coming late on from Mekhail after Cove had another player sent off, this time for persistent fouling. Despite having a -1 goal difference, the Knappers moved to the top of the table. The latest game was a strong away performance against all the odds at Fleet Spurs where one player failed to arrive, a second Jack Lewis was injured in the warm-up, and with Robert Litchfield stepping into the breach for his first start of the campaign and with only two fit players on the bench it was all hands to the pump. Fleet scored first and it looked as if it could have been a long night. However goals from Conor Davison (2) on his seasonal debut, Charlie Felicien with his first touch after coming on as a sub and a tap-in from Jamal resulting in a 4-2 victory and a return to the top of the table. Special mention should go to the rest of the squad: Ahmed Abdali who has made the centre back position (in a strong back three) his own; Louis Herbert with great expertise in the midfield holding role, Scott James who has only made two starts so far, but shows promise; Ben Landi who along with Craig and Jonny has made appearances for the senior Knaphill teams; youngsters Nathan Leonard and Harry Rosier who will get further chances to shine; the non-stop motor-mouth that is Kabir Odekunle; Mr ‘Shoot-on-sight’ Turkay Suleyman, Kallum Parker-Andrew who has had little time to shine so far this season and Hamid Senousaoui whose goal against Farnham was one of the few bright spots in a disappointing game. The Grant-McLellan Cup 1st round tie against Windsor which was played at Molesey FC’s Walton Road ground last Monday night, ended in a heart rendering 6-5 defeat on penalties after a hard fought 3-3 draw. With Knaphill 3-1 down after 23 minutes it didn’t look good, but a superb team effort turned the tie around with a last gasp (90+2 mins) free-kick from Turkay Suleyman. Then on the 14th it is back to Molesey for a County Cup tie, last year’s cup victory against Molesey was only achieved by a dramatic 5-4 penalty win after 120 minutes of goalless action. The New Year started with a thumping 6-1 home win over Sandhurst Town that was by all who witnessed it by far the best performance this season. Goals came from Charlie Felicien 2, Scott James 2, Ben Landi & Robert Litchfield with Ahmed Abdale getting the MoM award. After a 5 week wait for the weather to clear another fine home win, this time over Cove saw Nahaul Franchino 2, Jonny Coats & Jack Lewis score in a 4-1 win. Next week sees the long delayed League Cup 2nd round tie away at South Park on Monday night and an away trip to HartleyWintney in the League on Thursday.

    Knaphill 2 Staines Lammas 2 - Saturday 25th February 2012

An entertaining game at Redding Way on Saturday, and one which Knaphill had to share the points against Staines Lammas on Saturday, after coming close to snatching a late second half winner which would have brought three worthy points. Twice their opponents took the lead, and Knaphill fought back to equalise in a second half that saw the home side dominate with some good football, following an evenly matched first half from both teams. Knaphill’s first half display showed plenty of possession and initial creativity, but were not convincing enough in delivering the end product. Staines Lammas took the lead in the 19th minute, albeit with an easy final touch for scorer Matt Baxter, who netted from eight yards, despite an appeal for offside. Steve Coultas was to go closest for Knaphill ten minutes earlier, and soon after the visitors opener, Craig Knowles had a good chance, but blazed over the bar. Knaphill had an even better opportunity to get on level terms after 35 minutes when Knowles was fouled in the box, but keeper Dan Cox dived to his left to save Luke Craig’s spot kick. Although Knaphill were building themselves up to get back into the game, they kept the visitors at bay and their single one goal advantage until halftime. The second half saw Knaphill really take a stronghold on the game, playing some good first touch football. Craig Knowles was inspirational with his scintillating runs at the visitors defence, whilst Knaphill’s overall attacking mode was beginning to cut through their opponents like a knife through butter. Just five minutes into the half Knaphill equalised when defender Gavin Brainch on one of his upfield raids, drilled in a cracking drive towards goal from 20 yards – his shot was only parried away by the keeper, and Knowles latched onto the loose ball to take his chance well and fire into the roof of the net. Staines Lammas did make another breakthrough after 62 minutes, when despite Dan Pritchard saving the first effort, Baxter was able to pounce onto the ball and score his second goal to put the visitors back into the lead. Two minutes later, a Knaphill chance came when Michael Pym shot just wide of the far post. But following some intensive pressure from Knaphill, they were rewarded with a deserved equaliser, when a corner from Paul Wetherall was met by a powerful header from James Ward to make it 2-2. Although the visitors did try and push for another goal themselves, it was Knaphill that continued to dominate and finished the strongest in the latter stages. Pym’s header was just over, and Coultas came the closest to a likely winner, but his shot struck the far post and spun out across the six yard box, and was cleared to safety. Knowles had the final opportunity in a final flourish, but his effort was diverted away for a corner. In the end, one point gained, but Knaphill were unfortunate not to gain all three. Team: Pritchard, Harvey(Pearce 64mins), Brainch, J.Ward, Macaskill, Wetherall, Jones, Knowles, Coultas(Coombes 87mins),Craig, Williams(Pym 60mins).

    Goals: Knowles 50mins, Ward 72mins
