“Former” Governor Rod Blagojevich is out of office

By Baylee Steelman

The arrest of our former governor happened on Dec. 9th, 2008 at about 6:30 in the morning. He was called by police to come out of the back door of his house so they could arrest him quietly without disturbing his children and without attracting photographers. He was accused of trying to sell Barack Obama, our new president’s, Senate seat to the highest bidder. He was also accused of threatening to fire workers for The Chicago Tribune that were writing stories about the bad things that he has done. He threatened their jobs because he wanted them to stop writing negative things about him in the paper. He was taken into federal custody that morning and was able to go home later that day.

When Rod was arrested, the House started the impeachment process because he never resigned. Later that month, they voted to impeach him from holding the governor’s position. The vote was 114 – 1 to do so. The one person that didn’t vote to impeach was Rep. Milt Patterson, a Democrat for Chicago. Patterson felt it wasn’t his job to impeach the governor so he decided to vote “no”. On Dec. 30th, Blagojevich appointed Roland Burris to the US Senate to replace Obama. According to the FBI, Rod isn’t allowed to appoint anyone for the open seat but of course he went through with it anyway. Burris officially became Senator on Jan. 15, 2009.

Blagojevich appeared on Good Morning America on Jan. 26 for an interview with Diane Sawyer. This was the first time he went public after his arrest. His interviews, in my opinion, weren’t very amusing. All he really did was recite poems and quote other people. According to him, he has done nothing wrong. The day of his interviews, he was actually supposed to go to court. He also appeared on CNN, David Letterman, and a Fox News Special. Overall, he just kept his story the same and claimed that he did nothing wrong. Our new governor is Patrick Quinn. He is now our 41st governor of Illinois. Quinn is a Democrat who is 61.

Jackson’s Pet Store

By Emily Galik

Recently, the new owners of Jackson’s pet store had their license taken away by the Department of Agriculture because the new owners didn’t meet the requirements with that department. The furnace of the pet store broke down and a few weeks ago the temperatures were below zero. The freezing temperatures killed many animals including a chinchilla, some birds, and feeder mice. If they don’t repair the furnace they would be arrested and it would be a felony.

Jarixa Rivera By Brianna Conerty

For my interview I asked my very good friend Jarixa some questions. Here are her answers. I asked Jarixa what her favorite thing is to do outside of school and she said texting her friends or hanging out with family. Speaking of school, if Jarixa could change our schools mascot it would be a monkey because they might be goofy but they are intelligent. Her favorite kind of candy is Skittles because she doesn’t like chocolate. When I asked Jarixa if she were president for the day what she would change about our country she said that she would change or fix up our economy. She prefers Rock Band over Guitar Hero and if she could go anywhere in the world it would be Antarctica. When I asked her if she could make up a holiday what would it be and what would happen on that day, she said it would be called All Nationals Day. People of all different races will all come together and celebrate their heritage as one. Jarixa’s dream job would be to become a famous vet. Lastly, I asked Jarixa what she liked best about answering these questions and she said she enjoyed answering the thinking questions most because it made her think twice about the really creative answers she came up with.

Tyler Brownfield By Michael Bisping

I did my interview with Tyler Brownfield, a good friend. His favorite video game (along with mine) is the Grand Theft Auto Series. Did you know his favorite music is rap and hard rock which is also the best in my opinion. He and I have the same favorite food and color. It’s pizza and red. He owns two bikes while I own 5 but only 1 is my own. He loves to play video games in his free time. Little Caeser’s is his favorite restaurant. Jeff Gordon is the person he wants to be. If he could be any superhero, it would be Superman. If you hear him saying “What in the world?” he is just saying his favorite words. His favorite teacher is my spelling bee coach, Mrs. Berns.

WHO KNEW…?

By Ashley Galik

…your heart beats 100,000 times a day?

…there are more then 10 million bricks in the Empire State Building?

…over 10,000 birds die each year from smashing into windows?

…a dragonfly has a life span of 24 hours?

….that it is impossible to sneeze with your eyes open?

Mrs. Malone

By Tiffany Bisping

I sat down with Mrs. Malone, our librarian. Her favorite soda pop is Diet Dr. Pepper. I think that is really good too. If she had a million dollars, she would open a drop in center for kids to be able to do activities after school when their parents aren’t home. I think that is a wonderful idea. Her favorite book is the Stormbreaker Series. Her favorite color is the same as mine, purple! She’s been a librarian for five years. Chips and salsa is her favorite snack. She was inspired to be a librarian by her mom who was a librarian in Kankakee for 25 years. That’s really cool! She grew up in St. Louis, a place I’ve always wanted to visit. She wanted to be a librarian because she loves to read and wants kids to get excited about reading. Well, she definitely got me excited about reading. There are some facts about our awesome librarian.

Hotel For Dogs

This movie is worth two tails up! The stars of this movie....besides the dogs.....are Emma Roberts and Jake T. Austin. They are brother and sister who are moving from one pair of foster parents (who are rock and roll freaks) to another . They have been sneaking around with their dog named Friday with their current foster parents for the last two months. They’ve had the dog for three years though. Andy (Emma Roberts) and Bruce (Jake T. Austin) are always getting into trouble. They were walking down the street one night when three guys ran out from the alley and police were chasing them. The police thought that Andy and Bruce were the ones who broke into the building. They started to run away but Friday went into a strange old hotel. They ended up staying there and while they were there they found two other dogs. So they ended up with hundreds of dogs, but will they be able to keep them? Check out the movie in theatres now!

Game Review – Wii Ski

By Zach Ackerman

Wii Ski is for the whole family. First you register your character and you can choose to use your Mii or choose something else. Once you choose your character you can customize your character. After that

you can start skiing. There are 13 ski courses. The easiest are Rabbit Road, Fox Way, and Deer Step. Some of the intermediate

courses are Snake Pass and Wolf Hill. The hardest course is Lion Peak. You can do tricks by going off a jump and shaking the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. The most dangerous move is the 1080 Rodeo. You will learn how to do it by talking to a certain person. You will also meet other characters on the way down.

Imagine a website that donates food to the poor, free of charge, a site that will feed the people of poor countries and all you have to do is answer some relatively easy (or hard) trivia. This site does all of this and takes little to no time at all. At www.freerice.com you answer trivia questions of many different educational subjects like English, math, and chemistry. For every correct answer you get, they donate ten grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger. Ten grains of rice doesn’t seem like much, barely a mouthful. But say 20 people are playing and if every person gets one correct answer (which I assure you is nearly impossible, as they allow do –overs), that’s 200 grains. With thousands of people playing at a time, that can really add up to a lot. But, what’s the point you may ask. Well, some companies saw opportunity in this. While you play the game, you see ads at the bottom of the screen. These companies, for the sake of world hunger, pay for all of this rice IF you take the time to play the game, and improve your intelligence level. You may think that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but not really. I myself have learned many new words through the English grammar questions. And the chemistry symbols questions are a great way to learn to remember them. We all go to the computer some time or another. All you have to do is go to the site and answer some trivia. Freerice is a great way to help the world, even for the laziest of us. It’s not time – consuming, and it is enjoyable. So, what are you waiting for? Log on and try it out. It’ll be worthwhile, for your sake and for the world’ s hungry as well.
