A Word from Pastor Scott I enjoyed reading A Way Other Than Our Ownby Walter Brueggeman as a devotional for Lent. His insights spoke truth to my heart and mind. They forced me to wrestle with some assump- tions I have held for some time. (And we know what happens when you assume!) One of his devotional readings stood out to me. It is entitled, An Alternative World at Hand”. It is a world based on the truthful reliability of Gods Promise”, for our God is a God of hope, wel- come and generosity. You will find it beyond the current world of despair; a world fueled by a futile rat race to climb to the top of the heap, in order to be king of the hill”, “numero uno”. The world of despair is the world of exclusion; a world where barriers, fences and walls draw lines that divide us by nation, class, race, gender. Groups are denied access to resources; freedoms are restricted for certain groups. Its a world of hostility, anxiety and fear. We see it happening in our government, in the public square, in our own fami- lies where some are accepted while others rejected for an array of reasons. According to Brueggeman, the Alternative World at Hand is filled with new gifts and fresh starts grounded in forgiveness and sustained by generosity”. Update to Security at NBPC

From the Session Report in February: NBPC leadership is working to form a Security Task Team which will take the following actions:

• Assessing whether NBPC should have a designated “Safety Team” in place;

• Analyzing our First Aid kits on the campus and bringing them up to date as well as making sure they are placed in areas where they can be used in a timely fashion;

Response:

• A Security/Safety Team is being formed and members will attend training on April 30

• New Braunfels Presbyterian Church now has up-to-date and fully supplied First Aid Kits strategically placed throughout the church. A kit is in the credenza in the Narthex, one is in the church office, one in the Nursery, and one in the kitchen cabinet – right next to the AED

You all know we have one of those – don’t you?

Respectfully submitted;

Security/Safety Team

What is the AED? An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. AEDs make it possible for more people to respond to a medical emergency where defibrillation is required. Because AEDs are portable, they can be used by nonmedical people (lay-rescuers). They can be made part of emergency response programs that also include rapid use of 9-1-1 and prompt delivery of cardio pul-monary resuscitation (CPR). All three of these activities are vital to improving survival from SCA.

Thank you to the Chancel Expansion Committee! Thank you to the members of the Chancel Expansion Committee appointed by the Session to oversee and direct the new chancel construction this past month. The committee members include Charlie Felts (chair), Joyce Taylor, Connie Jurica, Matt Grones, Scott Garrett, Mason Standley with ex-officio members Betsy Hankins, Daniel Wyman, Katy Walters and Scott Nowack. The new chancel adds more space for the Praise Band, the Bell choir and other needs to enhance our worship services. The wood floor enhances the sanctuary acoustics. There is a ramp for individuals who need help going up to the chancel. Sturdy railings are installed to assist members up and down the ramp and stairs. The pastoral and music staff are experimenting with the new lay out of the chancel for Sunday worship services, moving things around, taking things out in order to see what set ups look best. Please be pa-tient with us while we experiment. The funding for the project was paid in full from our Memorials Fund. Thanks be to God for the faithful giving of past generations that made this project possible. The new chancel will enhance our worship as we move into the future seeking God’s will for our con-gregation. Let us continue to evolve and transform as the people of God. An exciting future awaits us; a future filled with hope, love, truth and generosity.

Pastor Scott

Recycle, Reduce, Reuse Reclaim Wondering what to do with your devotions (Easter, Christmas and others) as you do your spring cleaning and come upon sev-eral bibles? The average American homes has 4/5 Bibles, some biblical scholars think that the younger generations will not even open/touch a Bible with the access of the internet, google and the smart phones’ ability to call up any written word that you ask for. I might have a solution to this. There is a place in Fowlerville Michigan, about 50 miles north of Detroit, the Christian Re-source International. They gather unused Christian literature, (CD’s Bibles, videos, SS lessons, books, devotions, teaching lessons, etc.) to give to missionaries from around the world for free. Along with their headquarters in Fowlerville, they also have distribution centers in the Philippines and Kenya for the missionaries to have access to these resources. CRI has been equipping orphanages, evangelists and pastors, and setting up lending libraries along with Bible college libraries. Empower-ing since 1956, CRI has sent $315 Million in Bible and Christian teaching tools to over 171 nations around the world. When you donate Bibles, Christian books and commentaries or financially, you have become a missionary and aligned yourself with the mission to Share, Send and Sow God’s Word. You might consider how material written in English would benefit a child/adult in the mountains of Haiti or the plains of Af-rica or anywhere else English is not the spoken language. The Bible is a master translation, what better way to learn the Eng-lish language than by reading God’s Words. On my journey this summer, I will be traveling to Tijuana, Mexico to the Pan-American Institute. In July I’m going to Haiti, up into the mountains and then in October, traveling to my home state of Michigan to drop off what is left at the CRI. I have talked with both Pastor Scott and Pastor Katy about having the church as a drop off place. If you have any concerns, thoughts or questions, you can contact me at 248-882-3404. Blessings, Sharon Jenks— [email protected]

We Got After It Again!

Many thanks to the incredible group of 12 volunteers from NBPC who spent about 90 minutes on March 3 cleaning up our

stretch of Loop 337 as our commitment to the Adopt-a-Highway program. In total, we collected about 24 bags of trash from just one side of the road (the other side is under construction) and gathered up many

bulky items. Thank you to James Lowe and his daughter, Charlotte (pictured) who

led our efforts.

The Mission Outreach program book drive was

a huge success. Thank you to everyone who donated books. This is an ongoing project.

The Little Free Library at the SOS Food Bank is always in need of books.

The annual KDO Golf Tournament is scheduled

for Saturday, April 21st at 8:00 am at Landa Park Golf Course. You may help by golfing,

being a hole sponsor, or purchasing raffle tickets. Forms are available in the church office

and in the KDO office. Please see Suzy at KDO for details.

The next MOC Fellowship Dinner is Tuesday April 10th at Mamacita's Mexican Restaurant. We will gather around 6 and take our seats as soon as everyone has arrived. The sign-up sheet is posted in the credenza.

DORCAS CIRCLE was able to give Easter Cards to 178 recipients of Meals on Wheels! THANKS to all of

you who helped with this service project.

SPOTLIGHT ON A NBPC MEMBER When the Queen of England bestows a unique honor, coveted by some, on a distinguished, accomplished woman, she touches that woman on the shoulder with her “scepter” and pronounces that she is a Grande Dame for life.

If there was a parallel to that in the church, particularly our branch of Presbyterianism, it seems highly appropriate for the scepter to touch Em Riding’s shoulder and pronounce, “you are indeed a Grand Dame of the Church.”

Married to David Riding in 1945, they moved with their four children to Texas from Illinois in 1957, he being trans-ferred to Randolph AFB. After purchasing a house, they discovered a neighbor down the street was the then pastor of the newly formed NBPC. His welcome to them was in-strumental in their becoming members and Em was one of the early active persons in the life of the Church, initially she and her children in the Sunday School.

In subsequent years, her involvement grew: Sunday School teacher, Board of Deacons member, later an Elder, Presi-dent of the WOC, Circle Chair, Choir member (Director then Joe Rodgers). She attended the first Cursillo now known as

Pilgrimage, along with Susan and Manard Ivy. Em is an active member of the Stephen Ministries. Em also participates in the Church Visitation program.

Her community volunteerism included Hospice, 23 years, part of that in the Thrift Store, later known as Hope Hospice. She helped in the Soup Kitchen and Senior Center Thrift Store.

Em and David Riding had five children, David, Dan, Darlene, Gary and Kay, three of whom live here. Daugh-ter Kay Holt was the only one born after moving to Texas, therefore a “True Texan”! Em, Kay and Kay’s hus-band, Dave, share a large comfortable home here in New Braunfels. Em has eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Em’s childhood church affiliation was Evangelical and Reformed. She could not remember being baptized and there was no record in that church. In a private ceremony, Lynda Dinsdale, beloved Associate Pastor of NBPC officiated at Em’s Baptism.

Em’s ultimate calling/gift is to be a caregiver and is an example to be emulated. She recently stated that “I enjoyed watching and am honored to be a part of the growth of NBPC.” She has just observed the milestone of her ninetieth birthday. Congratulations and God’s Blessings, Em!

The following is a quote from Kay Holt, a daughter who is one of those marvelous blessings which daughters can be, and she is.

“Mom was and still is a caregiver. I’m pretty sure that if you look in the dictionary under the word caregiver, her name would appear. She has held hands with numerous people as they took their last breath, sat with and just listened to families during difficult times, assisted in trips to doctor appointments, hospitals and is well known at all assisted living venues. I’m pretty sure these days that her and Nancy Stewart try to do their visiting before dinner time as they are afraid that the staff may mistake them for patients and get hauled off to the dining room. Just a reminder that many of these “visits” were done by Mom way before Hospice and Stephen Ministries were available here in New Braunfels. I guess you could say she is a pioneer in that respect. A great living example of serving God through faith.”

Church News and Announcements

Don’t miss a free choir concert at NBPC on April 6, presented by the Texas Luther-an University choirs, that will feature two newly composed works commissioned in memory of Caroline Weston, a longtime member of NBPC.

“My Song in the Night,” an American Folk-hymn and the theme of the concert, cap-tures the many deep emotions we experi-ence as we journey through life and it serves as the inspiration for this concert under the direction of Dr. Douglas R. Boy-er, director of TLU’s School of Music and Choral Activities.

The concert features world music and both sacred and secular pieces. The two new works, “Let Your Spirit Blow as Wind” and “God of Sand and God of Sea,” were composed by American composer Alice Parker. If you need childcare the evening of the concert, please call the church at 830.625.5141 to let the church staff know.

Save the Date! On Saturday, May 5, 10:00 AM in the Activity Center Presbyterian Women (men are invited al-so) will gather for a time of fellowship, light re-freshments, Bible Study, and a Celebration of this year's Birthday Offering. This year's Birthday Of-fering will be given to three projects: one is for the construction of thirteen tiny houses for low in-come families in Oregon; another for the con-struction of a multiuse building at Dwelling Place, a home for women and children who have es-caped family violence in Minnesota; and an up-date of facilities of the Village of Grace Center for Physical and Spiritual Health in Honduras. We hope all will join us for this special event. There is no charge for this, only if you wish to contribute to the Birthday Offering. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Nar-thex mid-April if you plan on attending.

LADIES NIGHT OUT: Our destination for April 24th will be

Longhorn Steakhouse in Creekside, 6:00 p.m. The sign-

up sheet is posted in the

The Treasurer’s Report (Rosanne Stockhorst) reflected total offerings in February of $33,676 and expenses of $36,115. Overall, we have a deficit balance of $24,089 for the year primarily because of annual expenses we incurred in January. Christian Education Committee (Sharon Jebens): The last Kid’s Nights Out this school year are on April 6 and May 4. Volunteers are needed for NBPC’s booth, “Fisher of Men,” at Kid’s Fest on April 7. Vacation Bible School will be July 9-13 and the theme is “Shipwrecked.” Facilities Committee (Matt Grones): The Columbarium will undergo a makeover with im-proved landscaping and standardized engraving on the faceplates. The Chancel expansion project is expected to come in at almost $27,000, or $6,000 less than projected. Fellowship Committee (Austin Talley): An Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt will be held on April 1 and a 5th Sunday Potluck Brunch will occur on April 29. On May 30 we will have an All-American Feast & Obstacle Course Family Fun Fellowship evening. KDO Committee (Colleen Beito): Tournament players and hole sponsors are needed for the annual KDO Golf Tournament on April 21 at Landa Park. Registration for 2018-19 classes are full except for M/W Toddlers (four openings available). Membership Committee (Linda Gabbard): Articles featuring NBPC members will start ap-pearing in the monthly newsletter soon. Plans are underway to improve coffee and snacks in the Narthex every Sunday. Mission & Outreach Committee (Steve Hankins): See detailed highlights in this newsletter.

Stewardship Committee (Frank Hampel): The committee asked that the funding source for the Chancel expansion project be changed so that all $27,000 comes from the memorial fund and none from the major maintenance fund. Session approved the recommendation. Worship Committee (Bob Nolen): There will be a combined service at 10 am on April 29. Two baptisms were approved for April 8 and May 2. April communion will be served on the second Sunday of the month. In June and July, we will conduct a Summer Sabbath Series with a 10 am service only. Pastors’ Reports: Pastor Scott will be on vacation August 5-19. He announced we have re-ceived a donation of $25,000 to the memorial fund. Pastor Katy recently met with the Girl Scouts who hold meetings in our church and invited them to participate in Scout Sunday later this spring. New Business: There will be a called Session meeting on Sunday, March 25 to meet new members.

The Zambian PC(USA) Mission led by Charles and Melissa Johnson is worth following on Fa-cebook at “Life in Lundazi.” They report that 14 new hospital beds and mattresses were deliv-ered to the Rural CCAP Health Carlier this year (see photo). Praise the Lord! The center sees an average of 90 patients per day and only had two beds and several filthy mattresses on the floor. In spite of that, more than 1,000 babies have been safely delivered since 2013. Melissa told us this tragic story when she was here. Lat-er she shared with Zoe Jacobie, our NBPC liai-son to the Johnsons, that during the course of their home visit to the USA, a church in Liver-pool, New York, had committed to donating

Another Way to Support the Bed Race The last day to purchase Family Promise Bed Race raffle tickets in the Narthex is April 8. Tickets are $5/each or $20/for 5. Drawings for prizes will be the day of the race, April 14, but you don’t have to be present to win. On each ticket you purchase you will indi-cate which prize you want to be eligible for — handmade quilt from the NBPC Quilt Guild; spa package; coffee crawl; out-doorsman package; or Schlitterbahn package. Thank you for your support!

Family Promise Success Story The following are excerpts from a note received from Stacey Minor, executive director of Family Promise—Greater New Braunfels, in late February. It’s worth the reading! Thank you to all of our FP volunteers who share their time and love with families like Bianca’s. I wanted to share an occasion for celebration! Many of you may remember Bianca and her two children, Bobby and LaBrea. Well, Bianca was recently promoted to a position at her work and as you may recall, this turned into a financial hardship because she no longer qualified for necessary financial assistance. As a result, we have asked you to help her fund child care for the rest of the school year which you willingly did and she is so very grateful. We learned last week that in her new promoted role, Bianca instituted a creative solution for her staff with the Wyndham resort. Previously, there was a great deal of turnover, absenteeism, costs and failed state inspections. When Bianca introduced this innovative solution to completing daily tasks, it was met with doubt from her staff and the attitude of “we've never done it like this before.” Bianca pressed on with the attitude of “let's just give it a try.” Her new model was a huge success, saving Wyndham significant expense in goods, fees/fines, as well as staff absenteeism and turnover. It boosted staff morale by giving them accountability and initiative. It caused a ripple effect for other departments and brought staff together as a team. It caught the attention of her manager who nominated Bianca for General Manager training. This nomination was hugely signifi-cant because they only choose one person PER REGION. Bianca was on Cloud 9 to be recognized and credited Family Promise for teaching her these skills; how to think outside of the box, how to motivate others, how to avoid power struggles with others and pull out their best.
