JUMPING IN TO FALL

Yep, it’s that time again when the kids go

back to school, the weather cools down, the leaves begin

their colorful change and the Fall schedule begins at

church! But, Fall isn’t just about a worship time change.

The Fall schedule brings with it a new season of TAP

(September 5), Sunday’s Cool (September 9), Joyful

Sounds Handbells (9/5), Senior Choir (9/5), Workshop

(9/5), Senior Fellowship (9/11), and more!

It’s a time when we, as a congregation, celebrate our

church family with a Rally Day Bar-B-Que (yummy,

yummy on 9/9). The Fall schedule gives us the

opportunity to get back into the swing of things if we

have been away from worship and allows us to try new

things: different avenues of worship, new learning

opportunities and new ways of loving and serving God

and our neighbors (wherever they may be!).

We encourage you to jump in to Fall with both feet!

Come and feel not only the love of your church family but

experience the very real presence of God!

See you in church!

Senior Fellowship meets the 2nd Tuesday of

every month (September to May) beginning

at 11:00 a.m. for a Eucharist Worship

service and hymn sing, followed by a

wonderful luncheon at noon with a program

sometimes following the meal! Join us on

Tuesday, September 11th for our annual

“Joke A Thon” - bring a joke to share or one will be provided for

you!!! Remember, worship begins at 11:00! We look forward to

seeing you!!

YOU MIGHT BE LUTHERAN IF….

you actually think the pastor's jokes are

funny.

you pronounce the word Lutheran "Lutern."

you carry silverware in your pocket to church just in case

there's a potluck.

you have an uncontollable urge to sit in the back of any room.

your house is a mess because you're "saved by Grace," not by

works. your mother reminds you often that she wishes you'd studied

the organ.

LMM meets the third Tuesday of the month at

7:03 p.m. We are usually busy serving our

church family and community or participating

in a Bible Study. Add this to a lot of humor

and great fellowship and you get a pretty good

idea of who we are and what we do! Join us

on Tuesday, September 18th for a B.S. (that’s Bible Study)

session in Hansen Parlor! We’ll also be planning our Annual

Sauerkraut Supper, so it’s all hands on deck that night!!

Church Council met Monday

August20,2012

Council members want to encourage everyone to pledge during the

Bearing Fruit for Jesus campaign that begins the first week of Octo-

ber. By pledging to current and benevolence, you can help take the

guess work out of creating a working budget for our church. Money

given to current and benevolence goes toward paying our pastors and

church staff, the light and heating bills and other necessary expenses

of our church. We are looking forward to seeing more of Toby Hol-

land as he works with our pastors toward completing his Identity and

Formation Program here at First and St. John’s. Council is pleased

that there are 13 people beginning preparation to become Stephen

Ministers. Stephen Ministers offer prayerful companionship to peo-

ple going through turbulent times in their lives. First Lutheran

Church received a large bequest recently and Council is looking for

input from the congregation for use of this money

Bearing Fruit for Jesus! Here we are moving quickly into

September and closing in on the beginning

of another Stewardship season. As the new

year rolls around we find ourselves

searching within our own beings as to how we can best serve

our parish through a combination of time, talents and financial

resources. This year we will be trying something a little differ-

ent by “Bearing Fruit for Jesus”.

Coming at the beginning of September, we will gather for

Rally Sunday with a kick-off of our Sunday’s Cool program

and a look at all of our activities at First Lutheran that we may

all take part in. It is always amazing the number of people it

takes to produce the Sunday morning services alone as well as

all of the time and talents that go into making the services so

successful and meaningful.

It takes an equal balance of people’s time, people’s talents

and people’s financial backing in order for those services to

continue. In the beginning of October you will receive your

Stewardship materials. Please thoughtfully review those

materials and determine in your mind and heart “am I really

doing all I can, or is there room that I can do just a little

more?” Perhaps with those thoughts in mind we all may bear

fruit for Jesus with his grace and power at work within you.

FOOD FOR THE POOR PASTOR AT

FIRST AND ST. JOHN’S

Sunday, September 16, the Rev. Chuck Robertson from Food for

the Poor will be with us to share the Food for the Poor’s minis-

tries. He is an ordained ELCA pastor who attended George

Washington University and the Lutheran Theological Seminary

at Philadelphia. He also served in the US Navy, 1951-55. Pastor

Robertson organized three mission congregations in Virginia and

Maryland Synods. He served as a missionary in Peru and was

pastor at St. Peter’s and St. Mark’s Lutheran Churches, Miami,

FL. He and his wife, Leah are retired and now reside near Orlan-

do, FL. They have six grown children.

Food for the Poor provides emergency international relief to Lat-

in America and the Caribbean and takes swift action wherever

people need help. Food For The Poor, named by The Chronicle

of Philanthropy as the largest international relief and develop-

ment organization in the nation, feeds millions of hungry people

throughout the countries served. Their Christian relief programs

and projects are helping children and the poorest of the poor by

providing food, housing, health care, education, water projects,

emergency relief and micro-enterprise assistance in the

Caribbean and Latin America.

100 Wells Challenge: We did it!

This year, young people of the ELCA set out to raise $250,000 to

support the water projects of ELCA World Hunger where they

are needed most. Thanks to the generosity of youth across the

nation, more than $400,000 has been received in support of this

effort to date. See www.ELCA.org/100wells and be sure to click

the link on the left to learn about the 100 Wells Tour concerts

with Agape, Rachel Kurtz and Lost and Found.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO OUR CHURCH FAMILY FOR ALLOWING THE STUDENTS TO

PARTICIPATE IN THE NATIONAL GATHERING!

Our MISSION STATEMENT...

The congregation of First Lutheran Church is a community of

caring individuals brought together around the cross of

Christ Jesus.

First Lutheran is a place of healing where the broken are helped in

finding wholeness. Once whole again, that person of faith reaches

out instinctively to others. This is God's gift of community in the

church.

Fed by Word and Sacrament, this community strives to live out the

baptismal faith in daily living. In other words, "What does God

have in store for me in my life today?"

Our weekly bible study continues at

noon on Wednesdays—We continue our

study in the Gospel of Matthew. We

hope you can join us!

Singing in the Choir

Some of you sitting in the congregation Sunday

after Sunday may enjoy singing beyond partici-

pating in hymns and sung liturgy. You may

even acknowledge an interest in joining the

choir, but aren’t sure if you could find the time

to commit to rehearsals from September through May. Perhaps

you lack assurance regarding your ability to sing. If this notion is

giving you pause to think, here are some guidelines to consider;

-Reading music is certainly beneficial, but not re-

quired. Rehearsals help everyone learn the music in whatever

ways work for them.

-Regular participation in rehearsals and services is terrific,

but singing every Sunday is not required. The assumption is that

individuals will be there as often as they can, and every contribu-

tion is appreciated. Several of our choir members are also away

seasonally or for extended periods.

-You can still sit with your family, friends or guests during

services and join us only for the choir anthem.

The Senior Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30

PM to 9:00 PM. Regular rehearsals will begin on September 5.

On Sunday mornings, we get together at 10:30 for additional re-

hearsal of the anthem and review of hymns for the service. Please

let the church office know if you are interested in joining us or

have any questions.

Thanks,

Jack Hemink, Music Director

You may have noticed LOTS of small but signif-

icant upgrades to our building: the baby grand

piano (and the platform it’s on), the completion

of the kitchen downstairs, the automatic door,

the floors down in Old Fellowship Hall, and (my favorite) a new

toggle switch in the kitchen to control the air conditioning.

Special thanks to our awesome Property committee!

Precision-crafted God engineered the human body so our 206 bones, the heaviest

part of us, make up only one-fifth of our weight. Yet bones are

strong enough to protect and support every other cell, bearing the

compression and tension we exert through ordinary activities

such as walking and lifting heavy items.

By comparison, wood snaps at such impact. And steel, strong

enough to bear such force, weighs three times what bone does

and would hinder our movements. No other matter strikes such a

perfect balance between strength and weight.

Furthermore, our bones are hollow — a big part of what reduces

their weight — and the interior efficiently produces a trillion red

blood cells each day.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm

139:14, NRSV).

Join us for a special 3 week Sunday’s Cool class on Stewardship

beginning on September 16th in anticipation of our “Bearing

Fruit for Jesus” Stewardshsip Campaign! We will meet in

Niewoehner Hall.

Two events in September:

“Jump into Fall” event—bring your swimsuit

and a snack to share as we head to Youngsville to

take the Plunge! We’ll meet at the church right

after our Rally Day Picnic (come to that, too!) on

September 9th around 1:30 p.m.

5th QUARTER FOOTBALL PARTY (New event) Each

month we will pick a local game to go to (either home or away

depending on who’s playing) and then go out afterwards for a bite

to eat! Our first event will be posted in the bulletin and on the

Loser Board and facebook.

As part of our church family’s

baptismal promise to parents and

children to help them grow in their

faith and learn more deeply how

much God loves them, we are en-

couraging families to take advantage of The Alleluia Pro-

gram here at First Lutheran.

This Wednesday after-school program begins at 3:45 with

a fun opening worship and then moves on to crafts and

recreation, class time and dinner. We have a fun table game

each week and special theme nights, too!

Most students come to church straight from school on

Wednesdays and we provide a bus for students to ride who

go to South Street and WAEC! We even have snacks for

them before our program begins!

We are getting revved up for another great TAP season

and we want all of our families and friends to be part of it!

TAP is designed for students in 1st through 12th grade

and goes from 3:45 until 6:00 p.m. This year we begin on

September 5th and we are always looking for new staff

members! If you can spare a couple of hours (or even 1

hour!) a week, please contact pastor Jeff at the church office!

Finger Lickin’ Good! What better way to start the Fall season at

First Lutheran than a good old-fashioned

bar-b-que! The annual Rally Day Picnic

will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2012,

immediately following the 11:00am service.

Following the incredible success of the

bar-b-que chicken grilled by our own John Beard last year, we

are hoping to increase our attendance and break the “100” mark

this year. John, who is most known to us as one of our cantors

for the 8am services, will be grilling right outside our church

doors. Please use the sign-up sheet in the narthex, so that we will

be able to properly plan for the number of chickens. You are

asked to bring a dish to share, as well as your own table service.

Beverages will be provided. You can be sure there may be a few

surprises that day, so you won’t want to miss this picnic! We

hope to see you there!

(p.s. Wear your picnic attire to church—it will make it more fun

for everyone!)

Remember our Prayer Shawl Group gets together

each Thursday at 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to knit

and pray. If you would like to join in this

incredible ministry, just show up—they’ll even teach

you how to knit and Carolyn will help guide the

prayer time together. “Pray without ceasing” is an

admonition this group takes seriously!!

On Sunday, September 16th, our third graders

will receive their Good News Bible at the

11:00 a.m. worship: Nicky Brooks, Sydney

Cronmiller, Hunter Feeny, Kaelah Knupp,

and Elizabeth Koebley. If you have a third

grader we inadvertently missed, please call

the church office so we can update our

records.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

NEW STEPHEN MINISTER TRAINING

CLASS SET TO BEGIN

Caring ministry at First and St. John’s Lutheran

Churches will be expanding soon as 13 members are

set to begin Stephen Minister training in September.

At the completion of their training in February, the 13 will be

commissioned as Stephen Ministers. They will then join the six

active Stephen Ministers in providing one to one care to individ-

uals experiencing difficulties in life.

Stephen Ministry training combines sound theological principles

with contemporary psychology. Stephen Leaders who will be

providing the training are Pastor Dave and Sue Reinke. Barb

Kersey, another Stephen Leader will continue to coordinate and

lead the first class of Stephen Ministers who are presently meet-

ing on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month for peer review.

The skills the Stephen Ministers learn and practice prepare them

to provide a very high level of Christian caregiving. The training

is intense because it explores some serious life issues, but it is

also a growth-producing and enjoyable experience.

The 50 hours of Stephen Ministry training is broken down into

twenty 2 1/2 hour sessions that will be held on Sunday evenings.

Among the training topics are:

● Feelings, Yours, Mine and Ours ● The Art of Listening

● Distinctively Christian Caring

● Assertiveness: Relating Gently and Firmly

● Maintaining Boundaries in Caregiving ● Confidentiality

● Ministering to Those Experiencing Grief

● Caring for People before, during, and after Hospitalization

Members of the new training class are: Sharon Albrecht,

Jennifer Barrett, Barry Keller, DeAnna Frederick, Gary Landrio,

Joan Madigan, Meredith McIntosh, Marjorie Palmer, Jeanne B.

Reinard, Karen Schumacher, Dottye Tipton, Cindy Wiedmaier

and Carolyn Worley.

Please lift up the training class in your prayers over the coming

months and watch for regular updates in the newsletter and

Sunday bulletin.
