Dear Parents and Friends of Presentation,

We had a very successful opening of school. The incoming ninth graders experienced two days of orientation to Pres which appeared to make them more relaxed and comfortable on the first day of school. Our opening liturgy centered on the school-wide theme of “Merciful Like the Father,” which mirrors Pope Francis’ Jubilee of Mercy.

College Counseling“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

As Class of 2016 begins its senior year, the college counselors echo Ralph Waldo Emerson in our wish for the college admissions process to be one of enthusiasm and discovery, not one to be dreaded, or completed as soon as possible to get it out of the way. No matter what each senior’s individual goals are, a successful journey to find the next step in their lives after Presentation can be enjoyable and one that enables them to begin the transition from high school to their next destination, be it college, employment, service or travel.

September is a busy month in the College Counseling Department, chiefly with individual meetings with the seniors and hosting many college representatives on campus. We look forward to seeing the parents of the Class of 2016 at our information evening on September 10, at which we will review our college process with the seniors.

Counseling News by Mary Connolly, Director of College Counseling

Transitions and new beginnings are something I have been thinking a lot about lately. My daughter, now done with college and grad school, is starting her first “real” job, as a counselor at a Catholic high school in San Diego. Her new beginning is a merger of excitement, a bit of relief and a dash of trepidation.

Similarly, each new school year presents an opportunity for new transitions and a fresh start. For our students, September will bring a day off after a couple of weeks of classes, meetings, practices and other activities associated with school life. The transition to a new grade–or, in the case of the freshmen and several transfer students, a whole new school–is well underway. It is fun to see the students greet each other with enthusiasm in the hallways. In the College Counseling Department, some seniors have stopped by to say hi, with similar enthusiasm in beginning their college process.

This summer, our juniors and seniors were assigned Where You Go Is Not Who’ll Be by Frank Bruni; I completed that assignment as well! What I particularly liked was a discussion about how students grow when they have to adjust to new environments at their colleges. “It’s how their resolve is forged,” Bruni states.

I would argue the same resolve can be achieved during high school experiences. As friends and parents, we sometimes try to ease the discomfort our students feel when facing a new challenge. I’m not talking about offering help when difficult circumstances warrant. I am referring to a student learning how to navigate the hallways of Pres, have a face-to-face conversation with a teacher or create a list of colleges she has researched well and feels confident in, based on their value as learning environments.

Working through transitions and embracing new opportunities–here’s to new beginnings!

Department Spotlight: Mathematics by Sharon Goldau, Mathematics Department Chair

“If people do not believe that mathematics is simple, it is only because they do not realize how complicated life is.” –John von Newmann

I begin with this quote as it embodies my love of mathematics. When you study mathematics, you receive immediate satisfaction of a job well done. You know immediately from the answer key if you are right or you are wrong. How many times in life are things that straightforward? Mathematics is right or wrong, black or white, with very little gray area at the high school level. In algebra we get the pleasure of solving things...solve for X! In real world problems modeled with functions, we can predict the future and determine the past. It really is amazing the clarity we can achieve in the study of mathematics.

English tells stories, social studies interprets, science hypothesizes, yet mathematics is constant. The calculus discovered or invented (depending on your viewpoint, but that’s another article) by Newton and Leibniz is the same calculus we study today.

So what might be new? Well, the implementation and techniques of teaching mathematics are ever-changing. New in the last year has been the introduction of the iPads in the classroom; our math teachers are using various apps to supplement learning.

What else is new? Summer advancement in math has come to Presentation. We had many incoming freshmen advance to geometry by taking Algebra I over the summer at our summer school. Some incoming freshman and sophomores advanced to Algebra II via our summer course covering geometry.

Our staff has several new arrivals this year, starting with a baby girl for our math teacher, Nicole Ralston. Two fantastic teachers will be stepping in during Ms. Ralston’s maternity leave. Elisa Baroni, a returning teacher to Presentation, is not only a math teacher extraordinaire, but also a Presentation parent. Yahoo executive and Presentation parent Mary Roth, whose dream it is to teach computer science to the young women at Presentation, will bring her students an immense knowledge of life in Silicon Valley.

In the Math Department, we are as excited as always to bring our enthusiasm and love of mathematics to our students and to begin anew this new school year of 2015-16.

From the Parent BoardParents,

Welcome to a new school year!

I hope you’ve settled into a new routine and figured out the difference between A and B days! It may take some time to understand the new schedule (especially those 56C7 days), but trust me, our students in plaid will get it all figured out.

My goal as president of the Parent Board is to invite you to join our Pres community. Parent Board is a group of enthusiastic parents who volunteer to host events that educate and raise additional funds to enhance the Presentation experience.

Just last year, Parent Board raised enough to donate a full scholarship to a deserving student, as well as purchase two assault air bikes for the weight room, wireless microphones for the Theater Department, a trophy case for our award-winning Speech & Debate Team, and a second robot for the Robotics Team. This is a short list of many items Parent Board made possible.

Our first event of the school year is the Mother-Daughter Mass and Breakfast on Sunday, Sept. 20. It is a sell-out, so register right away online: www.presentationhs.org/motherdaughter. Each year, attendees leave with a stronger mother-daughter bond, and with tears in their eyes from crying and laughing. Dads can get in on the action too by volunteering to serve food. Cost is $15 per person.

Don’t miss upcoming events, including the Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament, Crab Feed and the Ms. Miller’s State of the School. Check the Friday parent email, Presentation website or The Lantern for ticket information. Parent Board also sells Starbucks gift cards and birthday balloon bouquets that are placed on your daughter’s locker as a fun surprise. Both can be purchased in the Advancement Office.

Before you find an excuse to stay on the sidelines, remember this school is amazing because of the intellect, energy and stewardship fostered by faculty, staff, students and parents. Together we embody the motto, “Not Words, But Deeds.”

If you have questions, please send me an email or visit the Pres website, www.presentationhs.org for more information.

Thank you,Lisa MatthewsParent Board [email protected]

Bella Voce by Emilie Bertram, Vocal Music Director

The 2015-2016 season for Presentation music students is quickly getting underway! The Voice Class is filled with girls excited to learn about singing as a solo art. The Piano Keyboarding I students are trying their hand at learning to play piano, and the newly expanded Cantabile choir is discovering how to make many voices sound as one. Bella Voce again has exciting events on the horizon for this upcoming year, including participating in an invitation-only festival at San Jose State University, singing the National Anthem at Santa Clara University, and most exciting of all, our June 2016 trip to Ireland!

Bella Voce’s first performance is fast-approaching and we would love to have you in the audience! Please join us on Friday, Oct. 2 for our season-opening fall gala concert, All That Jazz! The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with appetizers, wine, a silent auction and raffle. At 7 p.m. you will be treated to a concert featuring both Bella Voce and Cantabile. Stay to the end to find out if you won the raffle or your auction item! All proceeds and ticket sales will be put towards helping fund the Ireland trip. We are looking forward to the opportunities that this year will bring, and sincerely thank those who support us along the way!

Dance Team by Sophia Brahney ‘16

Throughout the summer, the members of the Presentation Dance Team have been working extremely hard to prepare for the school year.

In June, the team attended the USA camp at Lincoln High School. During camp, Katherine Wong ’16 and Lauren Wong ’18 placed in the Super Sensational Finals; Katherine was selected by the USA staff as the Super Sensational Dancer of the Weekend. Then, our four team captains attended USA’s Officers Camp at UC Santa Cruz. In July, the team traveled to Cal Lutheran University for the USA Elite Camp. There, the team was awarded a superior rating for our camp routine. Also, three seniors–Emily Carollo ’16, Cassidy Kais ’16 and Jessica Palaganas ’16–were all semi-finalists for the Super Sensational Competition, and Jessica advanced to the finals! At all three camps, the team received the Hardest-Working Award.

In early August, nine current team members and two recent graduates attended a new camp, the West Coast Elite Dance Experience, in Universal City. During this camp, Jessica Palaganas ’16 and Lindsey Sandri ’15 were chosen as standout dancers. Lindsey was also selected by the staff to be a WCE apprentice for the 2016-17 school year.

To round out August, we are learning and preparing choreography for competition and performance routines. If you would like to support the Presentation Dance Team, please contribute to our fundraisers, attend our performances or sponsor the team. For more information, please email [email protected].

We are so excited for the new school year and cannot wait to see what is in store for our dancers!

From the Athletic DepartmentI hope the 2015-2016 school year is off to a fantastic start for you! Fall sports are already going full throttle, and our amazing facilities are filled with our active student-athletes once again.

Join us at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 in the Miller Athletic Complex for our annual fundraiser, Game of Throws. Registration is now open on the Athletics page of the Pres website. Join the fun of this baggo competition to help us reach our goal of raising $25,000 for the Presentation Athletics program!

During our meeting for coaches in August, Jerry Smith spoke about effective communication with today’s youth. Jerry is the women’s soccer coach at Santa Clara University and the founder and director of the Jerry Smith Coaching For Life Academy. It was a fantastic seminar for everyone who attended. Our coaches are looking forward to a great year ahead!

The Athletic Department is happy to introduce our new Head Athletic Trainer, Heather Terbeek. Please flip through the new faculty profiles in this edition of the Lantern for more information about Heather. Make sure to say hello and welcome Heather to our community when you see her! It’s a great day to be a Panther! I hope to see you soon! Go Panthers!Stacey Mallison, Athletic Director

Community Involvement“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -Mahatma Gandhi

As we begin another school year, we remember our commitment to our motto, “Not Words, But Deeds.” Each of us will strive this year to put what we are learning into action in order to make the world more peaceful and just. During the annual CI Service Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 2, each student will have the opportunity to meet with representatives from more than 20 service organizations. Whether students are passionate about animals or education–and most anything in between–there is an organization that will allow them to find themselves through service. Although service hours are not a requirement here at Presentation, we encourage every student to get involved and make a positive impact in her community. If your student has more questions regarding service, please have them stop by the CI office or contact Ms. Catalan at [email protected].

Is your student passionate about social justice and service? If the answer is yes, please encourage them to apply for one of CI’s life-changing immersion trips! Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to go on one of our five immersion trips this year. Opportunities include a trip to Washington, D.C. to learn about social justice issues, working alongside our Presentation sisters in Los Angeles, or traveling to West Virginia to help rebuild houses. This year, students can also apply to go on our first annual immersion trip with Bellarmine to Nogales, Arizona and Sonora, Mexico to learn about immigration. Finally, juniors can apply to travel to Nicaragua in June, 2016 to work with Amigos for Christ. To apply for any of these trips, please fill out the Immersion Trip Application on the Community Involvement page of the Presentation website. For more information, please contact Ms. Swoboda at [email protected].

Campus MinistryAugust was a busy month for Campus Ministry, with many activities to open the school year. Our peer ministers shared their faith with the Class of 2019 during workshops and liturgy at Freshman Orientation, and also led our community in prayer during Mass to mark the first day of school. During Mass, Ms. Miller reflected on our school’s theme for the year, “Merciful like the Father,” encouraging the students to be merciful, compassionate and forgiving with themselves and with each other.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, students have the opportunity to gather with their mothers and any other special women in their lives at the Mother-Daughter Communion Breakfast. All are invited to this special annual tradition. The mass will begin at 9 a.m. in the courtyard. Breakfast will begin at 10 a.m. in the gym. Please visit the school’s website or contact the Office of Advancement for more information or to purchase a ticket.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, the pastors and youth ministers of the Diocese of San Jose will celebrate Mass with the Presentation community. Bishop Patrick J. McGrath will preside. Afterwards, our guests will have lunch with students from their parishes to make connections and discuss their youth ministry programs. Presentation’s Campus Ministry encourages students to stay involved with their parishes throughout high school.

Would your daughter like to deepen her faith and become an adult member of the Catholic Church? Juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to sign up for the Confirmation program in their religion/interdisciplinary class at the beginning of September. The first meeting for all interested students will be held at lunch on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the gym. The opportunity for confirmation is available through Presentation’s Campus Ministry every second year. Please keep our confirmandi in your prayers this year.

Spaces are still available for our sophomore, junior and senior retreats. The dates are on our website, www.presentationhs.org/retreats. Please email [email protected] for more information or to register. These retreats are free and open to students of all faith traditions. We wish you a blessed beginning of this school year!

Welcome to our new faculty and staff!

Annie Burson-Ryan grew up in San Jose and attended an all-girls Catholic high school. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish at the University of San Francisco and worked as an intern at a non-profit organization in Bolivia. She has traveled to eight different Spanish-speaking countries and will be teaching Spanish I, Spanish I Accelerated and Spanish III this year.

Tim Case is returning to Presentation as the Vice Principal of Student Activities. He spent his first nine years in education at Presentation as a Social Studies teacher, the Director of Speech and Debate and also served as the Social Studies Department Chair. He is originally from Florida and earned his Bachelor's degree from the Wilkes Honors College of FAU and his Master's degree from San Jose State University.

Monica DePalmo was born in Berkeley and grew up in the Bay Area. Her daughter Claire is a 2009 Presentation alum. Monica is a Professional Project Manager and will be the Administrative Assistant for Student Services and Admissions Secretary.

Kellen Lee will serve as a full-time substitute teacher. In addition, he will be a long-term substitute in the PE Department. He was an All-American baseball player at UC San Diego where he earned two Bachelor's degrees in Communication and Psychology. He also has a Master's degree in Sport Psychology from John F. Kennedy University. Kellen is originally from Vista, which is in the San Diego area.

Jacquelyn Little is excited to start at Presentation as an English teacher. She received her Bachelor's degree in English and Spanish from UC Davis and her Master's degree from Santa Clara University.

Jeff Mullins graduated from University of Cincinnati as an Electrical Engineer many moons ago and discovered writing software was more fun and challenging than circuit design. He has designed embedded software for various consumer products such as the very first cellular phones, wireless LANs and now FireTV products for Amazon. After fours years as a parent mentor, he is taking on the additional role of Robotics Team coach.

Denise Rooney will be working as the Athletics Department Administrative Assistant. Originally from Texas, she has a Bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University in Denver. She has worked for more than 20 years supporting the US Department of Defense. She has one daughter, Kaitlin, who is a sophomore at Pres.

Angelena Sanfilippo Paxton joins the English faculty this year. She is an award-winning poet who joins us from Menlo College, where she taught English composition and literature. Heather Terbeek will be working as the Head Athletic Trainer. A Bay Area native, she obtained her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Kinesiology-Athletic Training from San Jose State University.

Britany Tufnell is a Presentation alum and is thrilled to be joining the team as an in-house substitute teacher and long-term sub for Psychology. She earned both of her degrees from San Jose State University, and currently holds a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Child and Adolescent Development and a M.A. in Education Counseling. She is a former residential counselor for at-risk foster youth, preschool teacher and career counselor.

From the Attendance OfficeParents, if your daughter is not coming to school or is coming to school late, please call the Attendance Office no later than 9 a.m.: 408-266-1060. When she returns to school, send her to the Attendance Office with a note from you. Your daughter is considered absent if she arrives at school after 8 a.m. (unless she has a free period), and will need a note. All absences require a written note signed by the parent the day she returns to school. Faxes and emails are not accepted.

In the rare instance when your daughter needs to leave school for an appointment, send her to the Attendance Office before school begins with a note from you stating the reason she needs to leave and the time of her dismissal. She will be given an early dismissal notice from the Attendance Secretary, Ms. Furtado. She can leave at the stated time on the early dismissal slip.

By law, the school cannot dispense medication. Your daughter may carry Advil, Tylenol, Midol, cough drops, etc. in her backpack to use as needed.

We are excited to introduce several new additions to the Presentation faculty and staff this year. These new staff members will be an integral part of our community–whether they are teaching in the classroom, working behind-the-scenes in our offices or assisting with student activities.

Campus UpgradesIt’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do! This summer, several spaces on the Presentation campus were spruced up with a few new touches, including the main foyer, reception room and our statue of Mary presenting Jesus at the Temple. The result is a warmer, brighter and more welcoming space for our community.

Classroom Makeovers:Over the summer, three more of our classrooms got the swivel chair treatment–Rooms 17, 18 and 30. The new desks create a dynamic, more interactive educational experience for our students.

Main Foyer: So long, cinder block! The main foyer is now light and bright with a fresh coat of paint on the walls and doorways.

Reception Room: As a place of welcome for our incoming families and potential new students, the Reception Room now offers a glimpse of campus life–with new paint, decor and a variety of photographs of our students in action!

Presentation of Jesus at the Temple Statue: The statue of Mary presenting Jesus at the Temple has always been the heart and spiritual center of our campus. Now, it is a special place of reflection for our community–with a new bench as well as a lavender and rose garden.

The Presentation auction is the largest fundraiser of the school year. Being a sponsor is a great opportunity for you to support Pres girls, as 24% of our student body receives financial aid. Auction sponsors make it possible for present and future Pres girls alike to take advantage of everything our campus has to offer–athletics, academics, technology, co-curricular programs and scholarships.

Our sponsorship campaign is vital to the success of our auction event, and we are grateful for your support!

All sponsors to be listed in the auction catalog are due by Oct. 1.
