The Blessing of Knowing True Contentment

You learn from experience that just because something is bigger it is not necessarily better. It just

means there is more of it. Yet so much of our culture has bought into the notion that bigger must always be

better. I’ve finally reached a point in my own life where I can say, “This is no longer true for me.”

An essay, long circulating on social media that has been wrongly attributed to George Carlin among

others; called the Paradox of Our Age, was actually written by Dr. Bob Moorehead. He was a former pastor

of a church in Seattle, Washington. I believe that it captures our desperate search for a sense of peace and a

feeling of contentment in our daily lives that eludes most of us and this essay revels why it is that we are so

easily led astray and miss the mark in our pursuit of peace and contentment.

In the first paragraph of his three paragraph essay, Dr. Moorehead notes: “We have taller buildings

but shorter tempers; wider freeways but narrower viewpoints; we spend more time but have less; we buy

more but enjoy it less; we have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, yet less time; we have

more degrees but less sense; more knowledge but less judgement; more experts, yet more problems; we have

more gadgets but less satisfaction; more medicine, yet less wellness; we take more vitamins but see fewer

results. We drink too much; smoke too much; spend too recklessly; laugh too little; drive too fast; get too

angry quickly; stay up too late; get too tired; read too seldom; watch TV too much and pray too seldom.”

Yep, that would be me. Guilty as charged. Although it does not have to be that way. I’m not sure the

good people of Hamblen County know just how blessed they really are. A traffic jam in Morristown is

anything more than five cars at a stop light. The speed limit down the AJ Hwy is 40 mph though most people

are content to drive between 30-35 mph. A boat ride on Lake Cherokee can take your breath away. To wake

up in the morning and see an abundance of local wildlife on your property is simply amazing. Having the

opportunity to visit over a cup of coffee at Java Garden on Thursday morning is a wonderful way to begin

the day. All of these are blessings.

We all would be better off if we could slow down a little bit and carefully reconsider what is really

important in our lives. We could start by setting our cell phones down and silencing them for a few minutes

each day and just breath in slowly giving thanks to God for our blessings. We spend so much time in our

search for peace and contentment that we fail to see that the key to finding these resides inside our souls

and within the depth of our relationship with God. Since coming to All Saints’ and Morristown, I’ve once

again reconnected to peace and contentment in my life. Now that I have, I know how truly blessed I am.

A GROWING CHURCH IS ALWAYS IN TRANSITION: There are changes to clergy, ministries, and programs. A growing church must prepare for the transitions that come with growth.

In attending the Walk About for the Bishop Candidates many thought provoking topics were discussed. I found them enlightening and thought I would share them with you! Transitions aren’t always easy. A growing church must learn to adapt through transition. Romans 8:28: And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For the rector, this means leading the church family through the transition. For the church family, it is being flexible and remembering that transition is part of the growth process. God needs to be allowed to work in every heart. We must step back and give Him room to work. God has a plan for His church. Sometimes transi-tion is a part of God molding us! This is also a time to accept responsibility for the needs of others. It is easy for people to disconnect or to “fall through the cracks.” We must recognize the gifts and skills of those in our fellowship that broaden and strengthen our ministries. God sends us those needed to build up the body of Christ. Whether clergy or laity, we must unleash their abilities. If we truly want to make an impact in our community, we will listen to the voices of those outside our fellowship. New believers or those who are new to our fellowship offer valuable insight. Why did they choose to join us? What do they see that we have overlooked? The vast majority of churches today are plateaued or declining. A large number will be closing their doors in the next several years. Many are now realizing that they have refused to make necessary changes along the way to reach the world around them. They have not considered the need to have a missionary mindset in worship. We will also see a shift in our clergy. We will have a greater need for more deacons to serve with our clergy and acceptance of more shared or dual career clergy. Often leaders look for quick fixes on the surface without first addressing the underlying causes. • Changing because the church across town does it one way and it works for them does not mean it will

work in our congregation. • Changing too fast. Change should be instigated in a healthy manner. • Changing without the understanding and support of the people. If people do not catch the vision and

understand the “why,” they will push back. • Not having a missional mindset for worship. Many churches are quite missional except in the area of

worship. As we work to re-imagine the future of The Episcopal Church, the only thing on which there is agreement is change is coming. Whether finances, membership, our role in society, or our relationship with the other provinces of the Anglican Communion, it is clear the future will be different than the past. It’s about unity. It’s about Holy Scripture. It’s about theology. It’s about participation. It’s about liturgy, It’s about ancient and future, not just now. It’s about being a church for the world, not just getting butts in the seats. That will come with our missional ministry and worship! God’s Blessing and Peace! Judy

August 2017 Page 3

There’s a common misconception about the Episcopal Church from those outside of our communion as well as many within. The script sounds something like, “Oh, there’s no real set of beliefs. They [we] believe anything. The fellowship is good, though.” What DO you believe about God? Jesus? The Holy Spirit? And WHY do you

believe what you do? When Adult Education kicks off again in the fall, we will explore these questions (and the questions that they spawn) with guidance from the Book of Common Prayer and other sources. Does prayer really work? What makes one thing holy and another profane? And what’s the big deal about our prayer book anyway? Nearly all people seek a deeper relationship with the Creator and creation. This seeking is innate; it is something that one’s soul relentlessly pursues despite the distractions of the world around us. Taking time out from those distractions to listen to the soul – and to the voices of other seekers and teachers around us – is time very well spent! If you are one of those who wants to explore spirituality and the church is a deeper way, then start plan-ning now to attend our 45 minute adult education classes on Sunday mornings (9:20-10:05) in the Memorial Room when we reconvene. Consider bringing a friend to Agape on Wednesday evenings at 5:30 for dinner and a program which runs all year ‘round. Our weekly Bible Study on Wednesday mornings will also begin anew in the fall . . . and if you show up for the first meeting you get to help decide just WHERE in the Bible we’ll begin! I believe that God is calling all of us to renewed discipleship. Adult Christian Education is a wonderful way to start! -Henry Selby, Vestry Liaison for Adult Education

Continuing our thoughts on

One definition of stewardship is the responsible overseeing and protection of something

considered worth caring for and preserving. And what could be worth more to us as a group than

the life of our own church.

If we view stewardship in this way, then we should view this process as an integral part of

every season instead of a season all its own. We should stop looking at stewardship as a way to

pay the bills. Instead we should see it as an opportunity to experience the joy of generosity and

the joy of being faithful disciples. Let’s not talk about what All Saints doesn’t have and talk about

how blessed it is! Let us give out of a grateful heart – our time, talents and treasure.

“Earn all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.” John Wesley

Rally Day is approaching, and I'd like you to consider being a part of the Pastoral Care Ministry. There are many ways to help, and we have a number of committees under the Pastoral Care umbrella. If you like to knit, the prayer shawl committee can really use your talent - in fact, we're looking for someone interested in chairing this ministry. We have the Compassion Committee, formerly the Casserole Committee, to provide a meal for a person or family in a time of need - death in the family, sickness, or trouble. The Flower Carriers take the altar flowers after the 10:30 service on Sunday to those who are sick, shut in, or celebrating an event in their lives. Our Card Ministry sends out birthday and get well cards, and cards that let people know we're thinking about them. If you have cards you're not using, we can always use them for this worthwhile cause. We also have Lay Eucharistic Ministers who take communion to those parishioners who can't make it to church but would like to receive the Sacrament. If you know someone who hasn't been able to come to church and would like to receive communion, let me know. Please consider being part of our Pastoral Care ministry in any of these capacities. It's a wonderful way to participate in the life of All Saints'. Louise Joyce Pastoral Care Liaison 865-674-7572

ALPS Walk 2017—Team All Saints’

Thank you each and everyone who joined our All Saints’ Team at the ALPS Walk to Remember. We placed 2nd in funds raised by non-profits. At press time we have raised over $800. Kudos!!!

Jim Fuhr, Chair of 2017 ASEC Team

The choirs at All Saints’ will be resuming soon. Parish Choir meets on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm, immediately following our Agape service. The first practice of the new school year is August 23. Please contact Ryan Garber if you want to join the choir or have questions. Treble Choir (grades K-5) meets from 9:15-9:30am on Sunday mornings whenever there is Sunday School. Please note that on our breakfast Sundays, treble choir will not meet. These rehearsals meet in the choir room, around the corner from their classes, and the children will be taken to their classes after rehearsal is over. The Youth Music Ensemble (grades 6-12) will meet on Wednesdays as part of our Agape program. (Agape meets from 5:30-7:00pm, the rehearsal will be from approximately 6:10-6:45pm.) Rehearsals will begin on August 23. Please note: Rehearsals for all ensembles are in the choir room downstairs. Ryan Garber

• Saturday, August 26 is the Saturday that All Saints will assist in distribution of the food bags. If you want

to help hand out the food bags, be at Food on Foot by 11 am on Saturday August 26. Thank you to those

who donated school related items.

• A few good Wise Men helped Brooke White with her move.

• More thanks - to Jim Fuhr for being our team leader for the ALPS walk this year. Not sure how we did

money wise but one thing is for sure you can count on All Saints parishioners to show up.

• Loose offering for August goes to All Saints’ Episcopal School. So keep them in mind on the second

Sunday of the month, August 13. Just a reminder: any donation made to the loose offering for Outreach

can be in the form of cash or a check. Just note on the check to whom the monies are for Outreach. Also

Outreach is not “picky” about the day you make the donation. It could be on a Monday or a Tuesday…

• Bingo will be on August 9 and we can count on Marylou and company to provide not only a great meal

but some of the finest Bingo calling this side of Morris Blvd. I have been told by Bryan Park with the

Morristown Housing Authority that the MHA folks really look forward to this every month. Come if you

can.

• Rally Day is August 13– Outreach will have a table with information about some of our projects and food

to share. This is a good opportunity to see how you can plug in and have a voice about what Outreach is

doing and might do in the future.

• Who is the loose offering recipient for September? It is not known as of this writing. The Outreach

committee meeting to decide this is after the submission deadline for the August newsletter. However,

other organizations brought up for consideration are: The Rose Center, Kingwood Home for Children,

Camp Billy Johnson and Narrow Ridge Earth Literacy Center. If you know of a group that is a non-profit

and needs support please let the Outreach Committee know.

Outreach Committee met on July 25 for our quarterly meeting.

The Outreach Committee: Cookie Larkin, Ginger Goolsby, John

Hutchins, Sue Justis, Jackie Fleming, Louise Dyer and Larry McGowan.
