Chocolate Cherry Nut Bread

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, softened

3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 cup buttermilk

2 eggs

1 teaspoon almond extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup dried tart cherries

1/2 cup mini semisweet chocolate morsels

1/3 cup toasted chopped almonds

Put margarine and sugar in a large mixing

bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium

speed 3 to 4 minutes, or until well mixed. Stir in

buttermilk, eggs and almond extract; mix well.

Combine flour, baking powder, soda and salt.

Add to buttermilk mixture; stir just until dry

ingredients are moistened. Stir in cherries,

chocolate morsels and nuts.

Grease and flour bottom only of 9 x 5-inch loaf

pan. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in a

preheated 350-degree oven 55 to 65 minutes,

or until wooden pick inserted in center comes

out clean. Let cool in pan on wire rack 10

minutes. Loosen edges with a metal spatula.

Remove from pan. Let cool completely. Wrap

in plastic wrap and store in refrigerator. Makes

1 loaf, about 16 slices.

The Demmer Library Board of Trustees currently has a vacancy on its seven member library board.

The reasons people become Library Trustees are as varied and diverse as the talents and skills that Trustees

bring to their Library Boards. Generally, trustees bring a love of their library and appreciate the library’s role as an important place

in the local community.

The Library Board is the governing body of the library. The Library Board does NOT manage the day-to-day operations of the

library. The library board does:

DVD Series Explores Alzheimer’s Disease

The Family Guide to Alzheimer’s Disease series, will help you to understand the disease and its effects. This series

compiles information from physicians, experts in the field, and family members of Alzheimer’s sufferers to assist your

own family to take better care of your loved one and yourselves. This five volume series is hosted by Leeza Gibbons.

She speaks from experience as her own mother and grandmother were afflicted with the disease. She established the

Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation and Leeza’s Place (www.leezasplace.org) to fulfill a promise she made to her

Read to Achieve” with the Milwaukee Bucks

Starting January 2nd, children in third through tenth grades are eligible to participate in the Milwaukee Buck’s library reading challenge 2010 at

the Demmer Library. Every child who reads 500 pages will become an all-star reader which earns them a voucher for a free ticket to a

Milwaukee Bucks home basketball game at the Bradley Center. For those children who read more than 750 pages, their name will go into

special prize drawings with a chance to get an autographed basketball, or to be able to participate in the halftime High-Five Tunnel, or to be

recognized on-court at halftime during the game.

The deadline for turning in the final page count is Saturday, February 13th. Stickers will be handed out by the library to help recognize your

achievements, as well as a variety of bookmarks featuring various Bucks players. A full sheet of rules and all necessary information will be

available at the front desk of the library. The “Read to Achieve” Reading Challenge is a project of the Milwaukee Bucks in cooperation with the

Milwaukee Public Library, Milwaukee County Federated Library System, and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation.

Improvement Reference Center is a Do-It-Yourself database provided by the Wisconsin Valley Library Service (WVLS) which can be

found at our library website www.demmerlibrary.org from the left column under the heading “Online Resources”.

Here you will find full-text printable documents with high-quality step-by-step instructions for home improvement and home repair

projects. Thousands of repairs will be available in the areas of outdoor projects, electrical projects, remodeling projects, plumbing

projects, wood projects, decorating projects and maintenance. In addition to the repair information, other magazines and reference

books focusing on home improvement will be included in the database. The intent of this new product is to provide full text articles that

show instructions, tips, and suggestions for a variety of home improvement projects.
