Percy William Hubbard Life: Private Hubbard was born in Lambeth, London. Percy was one of 7 siblings, one of which died in childhood and his only brother Mervyn Hubbard moved out of the family home sometime before 1901. Percy worked as a bank clerk in the Bank of Westminster before he joined the army to fight in the Great War. Percy was affectionately nicknamed Peter by his family and fellow soldiers, which can be seen on some of the letters to his family. Death: Percy Hubbard was killed whilst serving as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the 16 th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers. He was on the front line trench near Arras whilst going about ‘from post-to- post steadying and encouraging the men’ when he was killed by a shell during a heavy bombardment. He was recorded to have died ‘instantaneously’ but this is likely to have been said purely to comfort his family. He is buried in Cabaret Rouge British Military Cemetery, Plot 8, Row M, Grave 38, 10 miles South West of Arras. ‘...His sunny nature and cheery disposition combined with splendid broadmindedness endeared him to us all and we are indeed the poorer for his loss...’ Letter to Miss Mabel Ruth Hubbard from Edgar B. Lord of the 16 th Battalion of the Lancashire Fusiliers on the death of her brother, Percy =Front Line Arras 1881-6 th June 1918
