FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Well, the dust is still settling after a great

LiftEx show here in Liverpool. While we would have liked more visitors the ones that at-tended were, as always, the right ones and all

the exhibitors I spoke to reported a good level of serious enquiries. With around 30% of the floor space already sold for next year in Aberdeen there is a lot of enthusiasm around the LiftEx concept and we are looking to see how we might promote similar exhibitions in other parts of the world.

After seemingly endless forms and bureaucracy, work has begun on refitting the new LEEA office and training centre in the Dubai International Academic City. Work will be complete by the end of the year and the official opening will take place on Sunday 10 January 2016. We will be having an open house day where all members are welcome to call in for coffee and to see the new facility at Office 310, third floor, block 10, DIAC. Please come along and meet me and the members of the team who will be based in Dubai.

We are holding members meetings in Sydney, Singapore and Dubai in December, with the Dubai members meeting being immediately before the inaugural LEEA Lifting & Rigging Conference Middle East. We have a great line up of industry speakers covering a wide range of subjects, which should be of interest to all members. Full details can be found on the website.

There has been a restructuring of the technical team to allow team members to focus on key membership areas. Kevin Crilly will relocate to Dubai in December 2015 to take over responsibility for the whole Middle East region and the LEEA facility in Dubai. Kevin will retain responsibilities for the Eastern Hemisphere but will be supported by Rob Messenger as Manager South East Asia and Steve Bowron as Manager for Africa and the Indian subcontinent.

The UK membership will be supported by a team of three technical officers with Keith Tonge becoming UK Country Manager covering northern and central England, working with Bernie Winters in the South and Robert (Rory) Rorison in the North and Scotland. Denis Hogan remains Regional Manager (West) and will be covering the Americas and working together with Bernie in mainland Europe.

The move of Rob Messenger means that the work on the accredited training scheme will be taken over by Scott Barnes who becomes Learning and Development Officer. In that role he will also be contributing to the build of the remaining courses for the new LEEA online learning portal.

The year is rushing towards its end and time seems to fly by (I must be getting old). The whole LEEA team have enjoyed the challenges of 2015 and look forward to working with all members during 2016. I wish all members a Happy New Year and all success in the coming year.

"AFTER SEEMINGLY ENDLESS FORMS AND BUREAUCRACY, WORK

HAS BEGUN ON REFITTING THE NEW LEEA OFFICE AND TRAINING CENTRE

IN DUBAI."

LETTER FROM LIVERPOOL MECHAN KEEPS SIEMENS ON TRACK WITH THAMESLINKEquipment produced by

Sheffield-based Mechan is helping Siemens Rail Systems UK bring to life its vision for the future of train maintenance.

Two Mechan bogie drops have been installed at the new Three Bridges depot in London, which will be used as a blueprint for Siemens projects worldwide.

Construction of the facility in Crawley forms part of the Thameslink upgrades to London’s commuter routes. It will accommodate 115 electric trains, due to enter service next year. Mechan’s bogie drops are installed within the depot floor, enabling bogies and under-car modules to be removed or exchanged without lifting or splitting carriages.

Richard Carr, chief executive, Mechan, said: “To see our equipment playing such an integral role in this sophisticated maintenance environment makes us very proud. Reducing servicing times whilst increasing safety is vital for depot operators and our products deliver both.”

Mechan has also supplied afurther two bogie drops for theHornsey depot in Haringey as part of the Thameslink project.

“The Lifting Engineer is designed to give members an update on industry activities, LEEA activities and areas that would be of technical interest to the membership. Whilst we are happy to identify new innovations and technical advances within the industry, we do not see it as a platform for sales promotion or marketing of product launches. Send stories for consideration to [email protected].” — LEEA

Power Jacks products have been utilised to provide a world-class training facility for athletes at the Western Australian

Institute of Sport (WAIS) High Performance Service Centre. The new facility, which opened in April 2015, was developed

to meet the training requirements of Western Australia’s high performing athletes.

A key part of the new facility is a mechanical decline runway. Engineering firm EL ES DE Engineering used two 300kN E-Series machine screw jacks in translating screw configuration, designed and manufactured by Power Jacks, to deliver a 45m ramp.

At the touch of a button, the runway can go from almost invisible within the floor to being elevated 1.5m high. Whether elevated or not, it is critical the surface remains firm and stable for athletes’ safety and performance.

When in use, the ramp provides those training in specialist pole vault and long jump activities with opportunities to maximise training without the inconvenience of a fixed ramp. The elevated ramp allows the pole vaulter to generate a greater speed over a shorter distance, saving energy which can then be applied in performing the vault.

SELECTED DATES FROM LEEAEVENTS.COM

LEEA staged a hugely successful LiftEx at the

Liverpool Exhibition Centre on 11-12 November. The show featured a co-located conference for the first time in addition to the Innovation Fast Pitch Awards, that took place on the show floor.

As is custom, LEEA subsequently held its AGM and dinner dance, where Oliver Auston, managing director, Checkmate Lifting & Safety Ltd, was named the association’s youngest chairman when he took over from past chairman, Kenny Wright, while Paul Fulcher became incoming vice chairman.

In his acceptance speech, Auston encouraged LEEA members to play a more proactive role in association matters and hailed this year’s “astonishing achievements” in opening a first permanent overseas base in the Middle East and the development of a “breathtaking” online learning management system.

Auston said: “I am humbled by your support and I am more determined now than ever before to be a chairman you all believe in, with commitment, passion and conviction. Never hiding from the challenges our global membership faces today, tomorrow or in the future.”

He added: “I believe in LEEA, its values, its ethics, the strength in our membership and the ability to influence a global audience and help reduce workplace accidents and fatalities by raising lifting standards worldwide. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your youngest ever chairman and look forward to leading an association measured by what it delivers.”

The LiftEx co-located conference took place on the second day of the show and featured a series of world-class presentations including a keynote from Ian Simpson, HM Principal Specialist Inspector of Health & Safety, Mechanical Engineering, at the UK’s Heath & Safety Executive (HSE).

Loughborough University were crowned winners of the Innovation Fast Pitch Awards 2015 for its Aerodynamic Lifting Aid. A full report and overview of this year’s competition will follow in due course.

LiftEx 2016 will take place on 23-24 November at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
