Fcffsrs-Maab err,

We have pleasure in submitting for your approval and adoption the Report and Balance Sheet for the Half Year ended

20th March, 1948.

(a) Salas.—Tha Cash Sales for the Half Year reached a record for the Society of Ej,066,16(.despite the period under review

being for 25 weeks only. This figure represents an increase of f107,723 against the 26 weeks of the conesponding period, and an

average weeldy increase of E4,309. AB departments have contrilmted to this increase, and to those members and empkysm who

have helped to produce these excellent results we extend our thanks and appreciation.

(I) Membcrshrp. —The present membership of tbe Society is 35,442.

(c) Babmce jsposabb e.—After meeting eB charges and allowing %15.4I5 for depreciation of Buildings, Fixtures, Ice., and

816,258 to meet Intcrest on Members' Shares, there remains a surplus of f59,008. We recommend that Dividend bepajd on Mcmbers'

purchases at the rate of le. 4d. in thc f„anda grant of 8590 14s. be made for educational purposes. We are pleased to be abk to

recommend this incmase in Dividend aver tbe last Half Year, which has been made increasingly cfffficult with dinunishing margins

and rising costs, and we appeal for thc utmost loyalty from our members with their purcbams to reduce the rate of expanses.,' iL;

(d) Saturday Closing. ~recitations with the Trade Unions have resulted in Saturday half-day being gninted to same o

distributive staffs. Your irrcctos wish to keep abreast of changes in conditicms of employment which are taking place

down the country, but are anxious not to limit the shopping services to our members, and have desired to maintain a co9zso 12 6

service with our competitors. Where alteration in the hery is talcing place, ampk time and notice wiB be giv

the change over' takes place.

(e) Intertrad'mg. —This scheme has continued to function satisfactorily, and we hope that it may be possible in th'

to obtain dividend by trading at any Cooperative Society in the country. Members who intend taking their hc

Lincolnshire Coast are remuuled that aBpurchases they make at Cooperaffve Shops wiB be automatically transfswec'

with our own Society; Societies sheady in the schcmc are: Boston. Gajnsborougju ~Cr jmsby, Lincoln

Retford, Scuntborpe, Spalding, and Skegness.6

(f) International Crswperators' isry, Brd July.—Arrangemcnts for the commemoration of this day sra presser,

hoped to stage on the Society's Sports Field. Whilst nothing has bosn finalised it is intended to organise Cb

Baby SbowcChojr Iterss, Folk Dances, Itc., and an invitation is being extended to Mr. Hugh Daltonto pedonn thc opc

(g) St CQas~Site.~egotjatjous are proceeding with the Lincoln Corporation for the fiist refusal of tlx

tbsy intend to build on Swift Car dens. We are anxious to extend our services in this aria as soon as circumstsnc.

= being donff.

(6) TtavaBsng Shopa —We have ordered two modern Travelling Crocery Shops whrch vnff enable us to consohdate our rff

and at the same time give regular service to our members in out-of-the-way country places.

(i) Frmt irnys. —Members m tbe~,and St. GBes districts will already be acqaainted with tbe fnut drays now plying

these areas. It is realised that two diays cannot fully service these areas, but so sbtjsfactory has been tbc: response to this rww

tlmt more dr will be nut on the road at sn early date. Arrangements have also been made for a Quick-Freeze

refrigerator to be justa)ted in the Antral Fnut Shop, which wiB enable us to supply freshly-frozen huits aB the year round. Wc

!=-"'-'-'-, i":"-"= feel tba need to get in on the ground Boor with what wiB raost probabjy be a development of the future.

(I') SlssB~lbazpa. —We have purchased tba grocery and bakery business of W. Sturdy, at Skeffingtborpe. Members resrdjng

in thrs district will know of its exceffem reputation, snd it should prove a distinct asset to the Society in addition to enabling us

to bc'on the spot to develop our trade in this area.

(ft) Sfaaattm and Tobacco.—The recent Budget increase has caused us to reduce ths rate of dividend on these saks to

6d. in the & llm amourn of tax on a 3s. 6d. packet of cigarettes is now 2s. 10Kwhich does not produce any profit, and we think'

!.:.':.=*' ycu wBI alee that we crm uo longer afford to pay fuB dividend on these commrocfitjes.

0) For tbs Bms time in tits history of 6e Society tbs Saks for tbe year have exceeded 82,000,000. This i~ a wudemttrl

acbjevamant for a town of 66,000 pcople We can estimate that two thirds of tbc trade was done in the town, so our feffow-mexdmm

m tbe country have pkyed therr pert ecpsaffy well The cash sales for 51 weeks were $2,062,349 14s. 2d. , which is sn jncrcam of

B195502coa9auad with last year. OLu target umst now bc three mjBjon pounds per annum, snd with your loyalty snd help "We

crm make it.

(m) In attajnjntf this feat. Iet us say a few words of thanks to our employees. We thank them for their good work during the

yasr and kcl certam wc cau expect 'continued loyalty. and by their efforts we are confident we can increase the safm to tbc

three miffion pounds per annum.

Yours faithfully,

For and an behalf of tbe Directors,

We have pleasure in submitting for your approval and adoption tbe Report and Balance Sheet for the Half Year ended

25th September, 1948.

(a) Sale«—The Cash Sales for the Half Year (27 weeks) amounted to fil, 235,639, an increase of fi239,450 over the conesponding

period (26 weeks). After one average weelr. 's sales have bean added to the 1947 figure for equitable comparsmn the net increase is

Ifi201,135 or 19I per cent. This~achievement has made inroads inta the fi3.000,000 goal which was made our target

six months ago, the annual sales having now reached ff2,301,800. Our thanks are due to the increased loyalty of our members whose

avrzage weeldy purchases are fil 5s. Qd. , and to aB members of the staff for the very great efforts they have made.

(6) Membership. —The present ~p is 35,839, which is an increase of 397 compared with last Half Year. I

l

(c) Balance DispesaMa. —After paying Interest on Members' Shares fil 5 648, depreciating our Buildings, Fixtures. grc. by fi16371,there remains a surplus of fi66,454. We recommend that dividend be paid on Members' Purchases at the rate of la. 4d. in ths fi

and that fi597 be allocated for Educational purposes. It is gratifying to be able to maintain our rate of dividend when the tendency

throughout the country is for thein to fafi. and this has only been made possible by keeping a watchful eye on our expenses. At the

same time we have made afiocations to necessary reserves and stepped up the depreciation rates which have been neglected by our

8 So«ety for same years due to EP.T., and wc hope to continue with this policy.

(d) T.T. Harsh —The Lincoln Reds bade fareweB to Welbourn Dairy Farm during the Half Year, and a growing herd of T.T.Aryshire cattle are now in residence supplying our Dairy with an increasing quantity of milk.

(c) T.T. hffifk —Those of our members who have bad deliveries of this nalk are delighted with its rich creamy quality. Wc are

very pleased with the demand for this new venture, but unfortunately ths orders for both TT. certified and TT.~far

exceeds the initial supply. We are installing the necessary plant for our own Dairy herd to produce certified milk which should

eventually enable us to meet our requirements.

(f) Price Cut« —After careful consideration we have decided to suspend the price-cuts which were introduced last Aprih It is

evident that the example of the movement has not had the desired effect on the national economy, neither has there been any evidence I

of increased registrations to benefit the Society.

(g) Travelling Pish Sbsp.—Our first Travelling Fish Shop is now on the road servicing the St. Ciles and Moorlsnds areas on

alternate days. Those of you who have seen this vehicle will be aware of the hygienic method of distribution which we thudr is

essential, especially in the sale of fisfz1

(h) Xmas Bazaar.—Encouraged by the successful Bazaar we hdd last Xmas we are repea6ng the show this year to be opened an

20th November. at 11 a.m. Last year's Fairy Glen will be replaced by a nautical ttraction "Saucy Sue,"

which will appeal greatly

to the kiddies along with the presence of Santa Claus. Save your present ~oys and ether~you have visited the

Bazaar.

(i) Cafe.—We have in mind the convenmm of the New Hall into a Crde on the moat modem lines. It will still be booluible in the

rq veveningz with or without the catering amciYies and at the same time give us the most up-t~ Cafe in the city,

(I) Cafe An«axe. —It is Ixjped that the quidsecrvice Tea Room, which we are installing in the present Cafe Anneze, will be ready

for opening in the spring of next year. Sujbddc equrpmnt for fittin out has been ordered and we are going ahead with th'e project

as soon as deliver% have been cffect«L

(k) St. Giles~Site.~apphcation for a shopping site in the centre of the St. Giles estate was turned down by the .

Lincoln Corponition, but they have stated that our application wjB be considered along with others when tenants are chosen for the

shops they intend to build.

(I) Hire Purchase Scheme. —All furniture is now unit~ to everyone, and those memberz who would prefer to spread then

",'sr', i 4-: '0 payment over a period'up to two years may do so by means of a Hire Purcham agreement. You are invited to visit our Fern'shing

anddElectrical departments, where our stsff wifi explain the schcum and assist ymr in evrzy way possible.

(m) National Membership. —The National Ezccrmve has decided that ttds scheme shall start on Monday, 31st )senary, Ngjk

National membership enables a member of a ~ative society to shop at any other ~perative society and aut~ mseive

dividend in their own Society. We have been allocated the code letters L N which should be given in addition to the maker"rrfibam

No. when malring purchases in the shop of another society. All purchases will rank for dividend, including f~tmd~is ehm made for tba transfer of a.member'9 cspjtal who moves from, t ne area to another.

Yours faithfully,

J'

OLIVE C DEER.DUNCAN

-" -- EDUCATION COMMITTEE- REPORT

Mcmkrs,

We submit hereunder our Report for your consideration and adoption.

CULTURAL GROUPS.'

(s) Choral Association. —The Senior Section is now under the conductorship of Mr. F. Strepps, and 'has met for rehearsals

throughout most of the summer in preparation for the Choral Feitival of thi, Mitfhuuf' Coop'erative Choasl Assorietion held "at

Wellingborough, 25ih September, whew although Lhumln did not jrin a;trgpfxy tBey' give s iicry good peifoimaiice'add received a

great ovation; the Ladies' Choir were only four pou'xts behind:. thii w'hmem.-'

Several invitations have been accepted for the Senior Choir to render public concerts locally in the near future.

The Junior Choir is gradually improving ~,axnl xgoxdily, butn mum rapid increase in membership is highly desirable.' i

(I) Arts Theatre GuHd. —The drama gr ve twxjj perfgtx'ttaxxsaa injgfay of a programme of three one-act plays for

its debut. Preparation is now being made fo' perI(kmxgfns"'andxeffgxrobably compete again this year in the Drama

Festival organised by the Midland Conative arne Association. A fesw mrire male members would be of great advantage.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION.Employees' studies in local chxsses and by CorxvsgxmxtjcxxxgxCoumas iliuing thepnst session were very encouraging. Out of 43i

entrants for Co-operative Union exaimnations, 10students obtained Erst~ panes and 20 secured second-class passes. Most of

the failures occurred among the juniors in peiminary cmnses. Two employees sat for Cxsoperative College Scholarship examina-

tiotis batt were unsnccesefuL A neui scheme of induccmrixt awards bas been approved by the Board of Directors and, will operate

for: the forthcoming session. XIIU II(V "I'':.

CELEBRITY L1KfUREKThefinal lccturc in the series was given in April by L. du Garde Peach on the subject of The Playwright Explains.

" The series

did aot prove as popuLar as was antieipaterh and therefore because of the expense involved a similar series is not contemplated

for this winter. Howevex'. we are considering the possibiTity of a different scheme in the form of s "Monthly Forum "to deal with

~perative and social topics of the day. ~ T11

INTKRNA1IONAL CfhOPERATIVK DAY.

Thc Education Department was mainly responsible under the auspices of the Board of Directors for, organising this function on

3rd July, at the Employees' Sports Field. The Rt. Hon. Hugh Dalton (Chancellor of Duchy of Lincaster) was the speaker,

Considering the limitation of present-day circumstances the event was highly successful.

CHILDREN'S HARVEST CAMP.

The camp was hald at Welbouiri. 14th to'28th August. *In spite. of Irifeix "xm weather the was very successhd, and

independent reports continue to amve indicating that it was the best camp ever. organised. which is a tn te and an amph' to oiu

expression of appreciation to all who assismd gt'tire camp.'

lts educiti'o'xud value wa's that children from the toom learnt something

of rural life, they experienced comnmnal living which is the essence of co-operation, and knowledge was imparted through Slm shows

and the paxticipation of 'tbe Woodcraft Folk.

WOODCRAFf FOLK.Our two branches of this organistxffon are"thxiv'ing vmll, iind the improvement mvtxmntity of members is gratifying. A competent

adult to act as leader is most dcriiable. however. ,

LIBRARY AND SICK ~CES., 11mse senrices are very popuhir with ~s, and new members of the Library are wekome. During thc period a considerabhx

number of new vohxmm have been added t'o stock hsxhxffum ose'r 50.boofm lrindfy ted by Mrs. C. 1.Brooke. We desire that

mein members should becoiae regular purchasem of cooperative fueratare and publicaffons.

GfglKRALConcerts and Fihn Shows wert: held in country areas, some, where new bianches have been opened, in the spring. We are now

plsening a moxa compmhensive programme for the forthcoming winter.

We iue.also hoping that several Adult Classes we are planning in conjunction with thc WKA will be wellvupported.

Mjrs. R. IL Brown now retires from the committee, and it is our pleasure to record thanks for services mndered and we uxsh har'

well in her retirement from office.

Nationally a new constiturion for ~psrative education has at hist been approved by Congrcm, and promises weff for the futuni

of effective educational development. But a narional macbine cannot be tbe panacea witjtxmt ~encmuagement and suppiuj-

in local societies. Therefore our succeis wiB depend upon the response and loyalty of rank andffle co-operators.
