Lions, Lioness and Leos,

We start the month of March with a sad goodbye. PDG Orv Curtiss passed away at home on Tuesday, February 24th. Lion Orv will always be remembered for his sense of humor, witty stories and a very giving heart. His legacy as a true Lion will live on for years to come. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife Lion Judy and his family.

Lion Mary Claire Noakes is recovering at home following a stroke in late January. Please continue to keep her in your prayers as she continues to feel better everyday. Lion Mary Claire will be anxiously awaiting your responses and reservations for our upcoming Cabinet Meeting on March 28th. The registration form is included in this edition of the ROAR as well as on the website.

At a recent Council of Governors meeting, I received Club delegate forms for the State Convention which is being held in Binghamton on April 24-26. I have mailed these to the individual clubs via the USPS. Please follow the specific directions on the forms and return them to the State office, at their new address, by April 3rd.

The Council of Governors has designated Saturday, May 9th to hold a Statewide Food Drive as part of our Centennial Service Challenge. Please try to incorporate a food drive in your Spring service projects.

Thank-you for your continued support of my Literacy Project. I have certainly enjoyed my club visitations so far. I have only a few clubs left to visit in this month and next. As we hope for Spring to arrive please support the great events sponsored by nearby clubs and organizations in our District. A list of events can be found in each addition of the ROAR, our district website and our facebook page “The Lions Clubs of District 20-Y2”.

children and teens who are blind, visually impaired and deaf blind and is sponsored by the Saratoga Springs Lions Club. Funds raised help to continue to offer a tuition free camp for the children who participate. Registration will open for this year’s camp on March 1st.

Last year’s Mom Prom raised $12,000 for the Saratoga County Children’s Committee! Event Details:

Mom Prom has room for 300 women, but there are less than 100 tickets still available, so act soon. The night is for Ladies only, but you don’t have to be a Mom to join in the fun. This event sold out last year, and is sure to sell out again. Get your tickets now by going to the Mom Prom website!

Camp Abilities Saratoga 2015The Saratoga Springs Lions are pleased to announce

that Registration for Camp Abilities Saratoga will open for campers and counselors on March 1. Camp Abilities Saratoga is a one-week developmental sports camp for children and teens who are blind, visually impaired, and deafblind. It is held at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY and will run from August 9 – 15. The primary objective of Camp Abilities Saratoga is to empower children and teens that are blind, visually impaired or deaf blind to be physically active by way of a series of sports activities that have been professionally adapted to their abilities. Additionally the camp provides a “real life” hands-on experience for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing the field of physical education, as well as active teaching professionals from the field of adaptive sports. This improves their knowledge, experience and confidence in developing and teaching sports, recreational and social activities for children with sensory impairments. Lastly, the program can provide a respite for parents and families of campers and the opportunity to provide their child with an inclusionary summer camp experience with other children. The camp has received tremendous support from the

community and our neighboring Lions Clubs. Members of the Camp Abilities board have been busy making presentations about this year’s camp to other Lions clubs and if your club is interested in scheduling a presentation please contact Lion Barb Martin at [email protected] or Lion John McDonald at [email protected]. NABASummer Employment Opportunities for the Visually Impairedby Michele Puleo O’Hare

Each summer, the Northeastern Association of the Blind

at Albany (NABA) looks to partner with employers for work experiences for our visually impaired consumers. High school and college students work part-time positions at different locations throughout the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley learning job skills and earning money. These opportunities allow students to try new jobs, test career options and build resumes for future, long-term employment.

The benefits of the program are substantial for all parties involved, not just the paid employee. NABA pays the students’ salaries and covers the students’

workers compensation and liability. Job coaches are provided for those in need and again, NABA incurs the costs associated with them. Employers get reliable workers at no cost or long-term commitment, although many years a few of our students are hired by their workplace supervisors due to their excellent performance. NABA continues to provide support

for the duration of the work experience. Successful partnerships have been at libraries, day care centers, recreation centers, retailers, grocery stores, office settings and hotels among others.

NABA partners with employers in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Greene, Saratoga, Columbia, Schoharie, Warren, Washington, Ulster, Dutchess, and Putnam Counties to match students with work experiences. Most participants work 15-20 hours weekly at entry level positions which include baggers, shelving clerks, inventory checkers, day care providers, cleaners, kennel workers and laundry room staff. As NABA consumers attend college and get older they like to work within their future career fields in areas such as IT, communications, marketing, education, human services, retail sales, and many other areas.

On Thursday February 12, 2015 Sauquoit Valley Lions hosted the 2015 Journey for Sight Regional kick off

dinner at Orchard Hall Restaurant. Members from five Region L Lions Clubs and the New Hartford Lioness were present despite the stormy weather. During the evening the sponsors of last years event were honored. They included Revere Copper and Allstate, major sponsors, as well as Mohawk Valley Retina, Mele Companies, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Utica National Ins., Nice n Easy, P. J. Green, Access FCU, NBT Bank and Lincoln Davies. In addition, plans were unveiled for this years Journey for Sight Walk, which will be held Saturday, May 9, 2015 at the Sauquoit High School Track. Region chair, Jim Winkler moderated the event. Dr. Richard Pascucci and his wife, the newest sponsors from Towpath Vision Care, spoke to us of their

work with the visually impaired and their association with the CABVI.

Our evening was complete as we welcomed Rivi Isreal from Freedom Guide dogs and her newest dog in training, Miley!

On Saturday evening February 14, 2015 Sauquoit Valley Lions joined other local service organizations for a Valentine Dinner, “Love

your Club” evening. Our guests were service groups who for several years have supported our local business, Orchard Hall Restaurant. In the summer of 2013 Orchard Hall was forced to close its banquet doors for major renovations. It is with great pleasure and gratitude

that they are up and running and we are enjoying a beautiful banquet hall to host our events in. Thank you to Orchard Hall Restaurant for serving our community and for hosting Sauquoit Valley Lions Meetings for the over 40 years!

In MemoriumPDG Orville B. Curtiss

Orville B. Curtiss, age 78, died after a short illness on February 24, 2015, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

Orv was born on January 31, 1937 in Ballston Spa NY to parents W. Schuyler and Winnie Boyd Curtiss. He graduated from Ballston Spa High School in 1955. He

enlisted in the Air National Guard on April 4, 1954 and served until February 28, 1993. Orv rose to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, with total service of 39 years with the Stratton Air National Guard Base, 109th Airlift Wing.

Orv was a charter member of the Galway Lions Club and served in various roles, including President, 1st Vice President and Club Secretary. He served on the district level as Zone Chairman and Region Chairman, and held numerous other committee chairmanships. Lion Orv was District Governor of District 20-Y2 1988-89 and was recognized as a Life Member by the Galway Lions Club and was a three-time honoree of the Melvin Jones Fellowship. One of his proudest moments was when he, as District Governor, signed the agreement between District 20-Y2 and the Albany Medical Center creating the Lions Eye Institute. At that time he became the Institute’s first Knight of the Blind.

Orv served the Town of Charlton as Zoning Administrative Officer for seven years, Planning Board member for seven years, and chairman of the Planning Board for six of those years. He was a Trustee for and a member of the Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church.

Orv enjoyed flying his entire life and held a private pilot’s license, commercial pilot’s license, flight instructor rating, instrument pilot’s license and a multi-engine rating.

His family and friends will always remember him as an avid and passionate golfer who never stopped chasing that elusive hole in one. Orv recently achieved his goal of writing a collection of personal stories, entitled “My Way,” to share with his family and friends.

Orv is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judith A. (Holbrook) Curtiss, of Charlton, NY, his children Lisa

(Jeff) McKenzie of Stillwater NY, Kelly (Len) Martin of Galway NY, Todd (Nancy) Curtiss of Billings MT, and Jill (Joe) Galarneau of Ballston Spa NY; his grandchildren: Allison and Anna McKenzie; Karenna, Hayley, and Brooke Martin; Tia Curtiss; Kyle and Curtis Galarneau; and Amanda Galarneau (Ben) Bowman; and great-grandson, Ryan Bowman. He is also survived by his twin brother Oscar B. Curtiss and brothers and sisters: Charlotte Fick, Jane Mason, Angeline King, Laura Armstrong, Charles Curtiss, and Norman Curtiss. He was preceded in death by his brother William S. Curtiss.

Relatives and friends may call from 1-5pm on Sunday, March 1 at Armer Funeral Home, Inc., 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa. A funeral service will be held 10am Monday, March 2 at Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church, 768 Charlton Road, Charlton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

The family would like to thank Dr. Courtney Bellomo of NY Oncology Hematology at Albany Medical Center for her compassionate care and Community Hospice of Saratoga and Arlene Lyons for their gentle and kind support during Orv’s illness. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Orv’s memory to the Galway Lions Club, P.O. Box 244 Galway, NY.

The Curtiss Family has requested that the Lions hold their service at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 1, which is just before regular calling hours begin from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Armer Funeral Home, 39 East High Street, Ballston Spa, NY.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 2, at Charlton Freehold Presbyterian Church, 768 Charlton Road, Charlton. Burial with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

2013 LIONS CLUB MATCHING GRANT APPLICATION

At its inception and throughout its early history, the existence and initial success of our Sight Society of NENY at Albany, Inc., very much depended upon the financial and active support of Lions clubs in the service area of Districts O, Y2 and W. Although our basic mission, with the continued support of our clubs, remains the same, the services of our Lions Eye Bank have expanded to include our present state-of-the-art facility and programs maintained by an Executive Director and staff of nine.

Today, our not-for-profit organization finds itself in a position with the financial resources to help clubs promote our joint mission of sight conservation by providing matching funds to implement specific projects with that object in mind.

The kinds of projects or programs we wish to help support should not duplicate those already available from other sources. Programs that encompass broader, sustainable activities are most desirable; areas like “Diabetes and Sight,” “Senior Sight Conservation,” “Sight Conservation Education in Schools,” “ Nurse-Teacher Informational Programs,” Health Fairs with Sight Conservation Components” among others which come immediately to mind.

Projects not eligible for consideration include services available through traditional Lions programs for individuals like (a). club programs which provide eye exams and eyeglasses through arrangements made with optometrists and/or optical companies (LensCrafters etc.)., (b). medical treatments / surgery referable for assistance from a Lions Eye Institute / Lions Foundation at Albany, NY.

Our matching grant program for each year will focus on a particular theme or area. For our first year in 2013, we are looking to support club projects with an emphasis on “Senior Sight Conservation.”

1. Who is eligible to apply? Lions clubs, Lioness clubs, and Leo clubs in Districts W, Y2 and O.

2. Amount of Grant – Variable grant requests for any amount up to $500 will be considered.

3. Recipient clubs must agree to match, from other financial resources, the full amount of the grant as approved by the Grant Committee. Note that value of club members’ donated time does not qualify as matching resources.

4. Grant applications may be submitted at any time and shall consist of a clear statement of the nature and purpose of the project along with any other details deemed appropriate by the applicant. A proposed budget of how grant monies will be spent consistent with our Lions Code of Ethics must also be provided as part of the application process.

5. It is expected that clubs will complete approved projects within one year of receiving the grant. Upon completion, submission of a comprehensive written report reviewing the outcome of the project is required from successful grant applicants. This will include a financial statement citing expenditures, payments to venders etc. incurred during the program. Arrangements to return to the Society, any unspent funds should be made by the club.

6. Clubs receiving awards through the grant program are urged to publicize their projects through club, district, state and international media.

OLions from around the District. The event is March 28th at the Middle Grove Fire House.

We are working on getting everything ready forthe Corinth Leo Club Induction Ceremony on March 30th.The Leo Club advisors will keep us posted on the details. It is so great to be working with a group of motivatedindividuals that work well together, even though they donot know each other very well. It is really nice to see themcome together as one unit. I am very proud of the CorinthLeo Club. I look forward to some great things from them.

We are currently working on getting our yearlyfundraiser list together. We should have some auto showcooking information in the coming weeks. If you have anidea for another fundraiser, please bring it to the club. Anyviable ideas will be considered. Remember, any idea youbring to the club that gets approved, you will chair theevent.

With these frigid temperatures comes a reminder to check on your elderly neighbors or shut-ins. Also if you see a fire hydrant covered in snow – bring your shovel and clean up around it. Your few moments in the cold could save some ones life or home.

Illness and the weather caused lower than expected attendance. Saratoga Springs Lions Cheryl Lawyer

and John McDonald presented a very informative talk and PowerPoint presentation on Camp Abilities, now entering its second year on the Skidmore College campus in Saratoga. Now that they have one summer’s experience completed, they are moving forward with this summer’s plans and are seeking donors, supporters, and sponsors.

(Our club was invited to be a sponsor; this will be added to the agenda for the March Board meeting.) There was a very interesting Q&A session after the talk. Lion John mentioned that our club could join theirs in their 90th Anniversary celebration if we chose and also mentioned a fundraiser at the NYS Military Museum on March 27, 2015 — it’s called Night at the Brewseum, and tickets are available on the NYS Museum website or by calling the Museum Gift Shop at 226 - 0490. Ticket price is $40 per person.

Our next Red Cross blood drive has been moved to March 30, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy.
