Dear Friends,

I can’t believe it’s almost November! How can this be?

But believe it or not, the days are moving quickly in that direction, which means quickly toward the holidays. I want to highlight a couple of upcoming events which you can put on your calendars.

Thanksgiving Day is late this year, November 28. At one time, we had a Thanksgiving Eve Eucharist the night before. Last year, we instead participated in an Interfaith Service at South Street Temple. We’ll be doing so again this year, on Sunday, November 24, at 2 PM.

I realize that many Episcopalians are a bit snooty about ecumenical worship (that is, worship with other denominations within the Christian tradition) as well as interfaith worship (with people of other religious faiths, e.g. Jews and Muslims). And granted, they are different worship experiences from what we are accustomed to, especially in a liturgical tradition.

However, it’s vitally important these days. We live in a time when some within all our religious traditions want to use the name of God to separate rather than to bring together. For us to bear our hearts and open our souls as a unified body before God - to give thanks together as well as to beseech mercy together – to worship together is to give witness to our shared faith in one God. We need to give that witness as much for one another as for the world around us; indeed, it is only through our unified worship that we set the appropriate context for coming together in other ways.

The second event is ecumenical rather than interfaith. The following Sunday, December 1, we are marking the First Sunday of Advent with a Service of Advent Lessons and Carols with Grace Lutheran Church. The choirs of the two congregations are singing, and readings for the Advent season will be shared.

Some of you will remember that Grace hosted us last year; this year’s service will be at SMOC and we will begin at 4 PM, with a reception following. It will be a great way to mark the beginning of this holy season – and I know many of you have the same experience I do: I want to sing Advent hymns more than I get to! The season is too short! Now is our chance.

As we approach the coming days, we’ll have the opportunity to enhance our usual worship experiences with these added ones. I hope you’ll attend and let your life be touched by God in a different way than usual.

I wanted to share with the congregation an update on the activities of my son, John Benton, who as you may remember was a member of the 2010 Olympic Team competing in the sport of Curling. Since then John has become the Director of Curling Operations at Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine, MN. One of his teams, Team Christensen (Duluth, MN) has won the 2013 University Games and will compete at the world level in Italy this December. John will travel with the team and he and his wife will stay in Italy through the

Christmas Holidays.

I have just learned that John will provide the color commentary for NBC Sports during the Olympic Trials in Fargo, ND, November 10-17. NBC is planning 34 hours of TV coverage through the Trials and the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia in February, 2014.

Thanks for the spiritual and financial support for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2013. The St. Mark’s community once again stepped up to help the American Cancer Society in its efforts to fight breast cancer and aid those whose lives have been touched by it. No matter what you personally be-lieve, I think we can all agree that the Bible has remained one of the most important and powerful documents of all time. But for all its influence, sur-prisingly few people have wrestled with the tough questions it raises—all too many of them just accept what they are told to believe. This Bible Study is not for those people. This Bible Study is for skeptics and think-ers, who aren’t afraid to have their beliefs challenged, who want to have an open, intellectual discussion about what this book actually says. This

Bible Study is for college kids who have questions about the text, Judeo-Christian theology, and their own faith. It is open to everyone who wants to come, regardless of their religious beliefs. College BS is held at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday nights in the lounge at St. Mark’s on the Campus Episcopal Church, at the corner of 13th & R Streets. (It’s the one with the lion statue out front.) Snacks will be involved. You are welcome to bring your own copy of the Bible, though we will have plenty of other versions around for comparison. We’ll begin in

Genesis, analyze the stories and struggle to find answers to the chal-lenges this book throws at us. Though Kurt Knecht and Father Jerry Thompson will act as advisors for our group, the discussion will be led by students, and geared toward the problems students face. There won’t be preaching or judgment. There will be neither fire nor brim-stone, only civil conversation among friends. Every student is welcome to come read and discuss the Bible, no matter their religious background.

Our Music Director, Kurt Knecht, had a new Hebrew setting of Psalm 121 premiered here in Lincoln by the UNL University Singers. He also had an adventurous setting of The Lamentations of Jeremiah premiered in Marietta, Ohio by the Marietta Concert Choir.

Jonah Sirota and Kurt Knecht will be at Vega, the new venue at the Rail Yard November 10th @7:00 P.M. The group is called Mondegreen, the Sirota/Knecht Project and will feature a portable organ and viola in improvised compositions from our upcoming album. Some “special guests” may join them as well. They will be the opening act for a group called the Portland Cello Project.

In The Shelter of the Lord featuring a world premiere by Kurt Knecht, the Deo Gratias children’s choirs and Jesu Meine Freude by J.S. Bach will be presented with the Lincoln Lutheran Choir on November 17th @3:00 p.m. The performance will be at Grace Lutheran Church located at 2225 Washington Street. Three members of St. Mark’s on The Campus choir are singers in the Lutheran Choir; Dan Ahlin, Lucy Webster and Gwen Colgrove.

On December 1st. Lessons and Carols will be presented in collaboration with Grace Lutheran at SMoC at 4:00 p.m.

A NOTE ON STEWARDSHIP

From the Senior Warden: First of all thank you to all of you for your continued support for the programs and ministry of St. Mark’s on the Campus. Your generous support has allowed us to continue to work towards keeping St. Marks a vibrant and caring community of faith. As we enter pledging season in 2013, please keep stewardship in your prayers, both your stewardship and that of the community, as we consider how we can address the budget shortfall that continues into this year, and at the same time continue to grow and expand the exciting programs that are important to our congregation today (Student Bible Study, SPACE, The Gathering Place Ministry, Committee on the Arts, more fellowship opportunities to name only a few!) Please keep this shortfall and these ministries in mind and prayer, as the vestry decided not to use general funds to make up last years deficit. Increasing your pledge would be a way that we could address these concerns, but of course, many other ways may be available. Your continued prayers given the awareness of this situation will help us to collectively move towards greater financial health as a parish. Thank you again for all that you do for St. Mark’s in terms of time and resources, financial and spiritual, and please know that each of you, no matter how much you are able to give, is a valued member of this community. ALTAR FLOWERS CHANGED

The cost of WEEKLY FLOWERS has risen to $50, and we have switched to a new florist. Please keep this in mind as you sign up for flowers, which you can do on the Flower Chart located in the lounge. A new Flower Chart is being created which can be used over again as a wipe-off board. In addition, a dedication line will be added for your use. We are also exploring the use of permanent arrangements for those weeks when we do not have a flower dedication.

Or maybe in your glove compartment – that space in our cars where we put everything but gloves? Or maybe at home in that drawer full of doodads? In your dorm room? Backpack? Briefcase? If you need to get in touch with your priest unexpectedly – for example, at 2 in the morning or 8:23 on a Thursday evening when you’re out shopping in a blizzard, it might be best if you don’t have to find your church directory. Blue Laminated cards with Father Jerry’s contact information are available in the narthex at the rear of the church. Please take as many as you would like. None of us plan emer-gencies; but we can prepare for them.

OFFICE HOURS

The church office/building is open Monday—Friday; 9:00—12:00; and 1:00—3:30 p.m. During these hours, the Office Manager , Gwen Colgrove, will be present and the telephone will be answered (provided, of course, she is in the office and not elsewhere in the building nor already on the phone, in which case a message may be left. (Outside of these hours, the doors will be locked and the phone will not be answered.

The Bookkeeper (Denise Meredith) will be available by appointment Tuesday—Sunday, although she is generally around the church building 11:00-3:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Her hours will shift with the beginning of each semester. If you plan to stop between 12 & 1:00p.m., an appointment is recommended because the doors will be locked.

The Rector (Father Jerry) is available by appointment Tuesday thru Sunday, although he is generally around the church building 10-3 Tuesday thru Friday. However, because of worship, meetings, lunches and coffees with parishioners, pastoral visits, appointments away from the church office, time set aside for sermon preparation, administrative tasks, study and reading, etc., an appointment with the Rector is always recommended.
