Director’s NotesWe end every rehearsal at Valley Catholic with a “What’s Good” circle. Each person has to mention one thing-- anything-- that is good from their day. Each cast and crew member has the spotlight for a moment to share and bask in something that brought them joy, peace, comfort, delight, or even satisfied hunger during the day. I don’t need to tell you we’ve lost a lot over the past 14 months. Instead, I’m going to list “what’s good” about our production of The Little Mermaid this year.
1. We are back in person, on stage. I didn’t think we’d get there this year. But thanks to the support of our community and the Valley Catholic administration, and particularly the Sisters of Saint Mary of Oregon, we get to do this show together, in our theatre.
2. The cast and crew!! This dedicated group of young people has inspired me in ways that I have not been able to feel in over a year. Their passion, compassion, joy in life, and generosity are all qualities that you can’t perceive over Zoom. They have worked so hard on this production, giving it their all--because they know what it’s like to lose the opportunity. No one involved in this show has taken this experience for granted.
3. The families of our cast and crew. They have volunteered their Saturdays, and sometimes dozens of hours more, to help the show come together. Despite masks, distancing, screening, and various other challenges, they stepped up, just like they always do. From the parents who worked on the set, to Kristine Arbaugh and Jeannie Waters for building most of the beautiful costumes you see in the show, to Heather Gentry who has designed this program, to Dean Waters whose videography makes our streaming experience possible... I am eternally grateful to each and every one of you. You do so much for your kids and our community. You are GOOD.
4. Technology. We are only able to do our show because of the ability to stream it to a virtual audience. This creates a unique experience in a couple of ways, both of which are good! First, our audience is from all over the world! As we learned with the Zoom play in November, cast members’ families from several states and even internationally are able to watch the show. Second, our cast and crew will be able to watch their performances at the same time that audiences do. They’ll be able to enjoy the show with their families, and with each other.
5. Our fabulous production team!! Without this dedicated crew of adults (who are not parents of cast or crew), none of this would be possible. Matt & Tracey Curfman, with the help of their kids, VC alumni Josh and Jennah, have created an innovative scenic design which incorporated imagination, beauty, and space, and technology. Jen Gatke created some beautiful custom props that we get to play with. Brittney Clark brought her wonderfully energetic choreography back to us again, even teaching most of the cast to tap dance! Bradford Johnson created a beautiful light design, and always manages to bring some magic to our stage. You are GOOD!
So, as you can see, as much as I could list a litany of things we’ve lost this year, it’s easy to focus on the good, the things we’ve gained, because they are so plentiful. We are blessed with our community, blessed to be able to perform this delightful show, and blessed to have the experience of theatre-- in whatever form-- again. Thank you for watching, and for being part of our world.

SeniorsTo Allison, Maggie, Abby, Monse, Amanda, Joe, Patricia,
Darius, Lili, and Morgane, Words cannot express how proud I am of each and every one of you, and how lucky I have been to be your teacher and director. Over the past four years, and this year particularly, I have seen you grow into self-possessed and kind young people, generous of spirit and talent. During a year when you’ve had so much taken from you, I’ve seen you hone your skills and
talents, find the good in people, and re-discover your passion for theatre. I will always remember your Tarzan, your East High cheerleaders, your pirates and bumbling police officers (Squad!), your fairy tale creatures
(even on Zoom!), Duloc dancers, your heartwarming Donkey and rock star Narrator, your Shakespeare tour-de-force performances in Much Ado and Midsummer, the drama class shenanigans this year and last year, and the tech SUPERHEROES (or Supervillians, whichever fits) that Joe, Amanda, Patricia, and Darius have become. Big shoes to fill! I will miss you all, but now, you become part of the legacy that is VC Drama. Get ready to write
those letters! I will miss you all. Love, Ms. Sutfin / Mrs. Paterson / General Ginnie / Ms. Darbus
Allison,
We are so proud of you! Congratulations on your eighth
and final show at Valley!
Love, Mom and Dad
