Dear Members and Friends of LAGS: Do you collect photos of your ancestor's graves? We recently found the grave of our great=grandfather, Jediah IRISH HAMILTON, after locating a copy of the local history book for a small town in Kansas. On contacting the writer of the book, we wondered if she would take a photo of his grave---there were several references to him in her book. She sent several photos and mentioned that the monument was in need of repair and that, since this was a small community, upkeep of the plots was the responsibility of the families. This particular stone was broken off at the base and was lying on the ground. The historian located a stone-mason who made the necessary repairs which gives this writer much satisfaction, knowing that the stone will last for another eighty years, at least! Contacting a local historical society can give you help in learning more about your ancestor's gravesite and knowing that the stones are not broken or defaced can give you much satisfaction.

Have you seen the "Plant a Tree" campaign being sponsored nationally by the AARP and the United State Postal Service? Free fill-in-the-blank family tree charts are now in post offices across the country. Posters are also available, and the aim is to encourage children, parents and grandparents to exchange letters about family roots and family history. Postmaster GeneralAnthony M. FRANK notes that many families in our mobile society have separated and children are growing up without the knowledge of family background and place in history. c.

In 1670~ John NIXON, Secretary to the Council of Albemarle Precinct of North Carolina, made a deposition. Within that 300 year-old deposition, . couched in the language of the day, one finds an amazingly "modern" expression. The deposition, which John NIXON made concerned a conversation he heard between two men, follows: liThe deposition of John Nixon aged 54 years or thereabouts, being at ye House of Francis Godfrey did heare a discussion between one Patrick Jackson and Thomas Miller about the sd Jackson going to Virginia ye sd Miller did affirme that Jackson was to inform Mr. Drummond on ye afares of our country or words to yt purpose ye sd Jackson sd yt he would lade his Sacramt yet it was not soe ye sd Miller sd yt hee looked on his Sacramt to be but a prcell of Hoggs wash or words to yt purpose and further sd flOt. BRAZIL???

This interesting "helpful hint" comes from the North San Diego Genealogical Society concerning a lost Confederate soldier. Descendants may now be living in Brazil! Between the years 1865-1868, five ships (four sailing from New Orleans and one frDm Galveston, Texas) set their sail southward. About 1800 people, including Confederate Soldiers, their families, and sympathizers, left their homes in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas. Four of the ships landed in Santos, Brazil which is the seaport for Sao Paulo. A fifth landed at Belen, Northern Brazil. Many of their descendants still live in the City of Campinos, about 60-70 miles from Sao Paulo. The original families established a Confederate cemetery on a farm not far from the Santa Barbara D'Oeste. This has been maintained by descendants. A history of these families has been written by Mrs. Judith MacKNIGHt JONES entitled "Soldadb Descansa" (Soldier's Rest). The text is in Portuguese. For a list of surnames included in the book, see the Copper State Bulletin of the Arizona State Genealogical Society, Vol XXI, Nos 3 and 4, Winter 1987, pgs 92-93.

************ We hope you can find the time to stop at our library and read the article, Getting To Know Your Ancestors, by Norm GURR in the Diablo Descendants Newsletter, October, 1988. It suggests that you find more information on your ancestors than is found on your ancestor charts. He suggests where to look and what to look for. The closing paragraph shows how history repeats itself:

'Tis a fact that in Scotland women keep their maiden name legally, and that is the way it appears on all documents.

ODISS The September/October issue of the NGS Newsletter (National Genealogical Society) has a fascinating article about the Optical Digital Image Storing System (ODISS) being tested by the National Archives. Over a million pages of military records of Tennessee soldiers of the Confederate Army have been placed in the system which will be available at the National Archives in Washington and the Tennessee Archives. Studies will be made of its use and technology. If the results are positive, the process will continue. This system will allow researchers to sca8 the film, including tapping into it from remote places, Paper Copies can b~ made and it· will make access to records more eaisly available to all.

========================~ ON WRITING AND SPELLlNG

In a search through the census schedules, it is helpful

to become familiar with a few variants of spelling and letter

formation. Until the turn of the century, spelling was phonetic.

words were spelled as they sounded. To obtain complete use of

any index, it is important to anticipate the different pos

sibilities then to use the index accordingly.

Each scribe had his own peculiar style. Nevertheless,

it is possible to form some generalities, the study of which

will greatly improve the thoroughness of research. The following

guidelines are based on editorial conclusions from this 1800

census and should not be taken as definitive statements on

early penmanship.

found the c'ensus s'o hel pful in resear'chi ng othef:'il.'ncestors, I have thoroughly checked for James. Though he was married in 1799 in NY, I have not found him in 1800, 1810, and 1820. He was not listed on the 1830 NY Census Index, but luckily he was living next door to his son, Joseph, my g-g-g-grandfather. Recently, a "cousin" brought to my attention that I was not being creative enough in searching variant spellings of the name TOTTEN.

So, now I will check: D, F, G, I, J, L, P, S, T, Y... with .otton, .ottor, .atten, .atton, .otter, .atter, oton, .oten, .aton, .aten, etc.

I hope this will be of help in locating that hard-to-find ancestor .
