    PROTECT THOSE YOU LOVE

HAVE YOU MADE A WILL? IS YOUR EXISTING WILL UP TO DATE?

If you are married do not assume your spouse ‘will automatically inherit

    everything’.

As house prices have risen, Inheritance Tax (IHT) affects many more families.

IHT rules applies to individual estates valued at over £325,000.

Unmarried partners may not inherit from one another without a Will.

Have you thought of guardianship for children under 18?

Why not give a legacy to your church or the charities you support?

To help you tackle these issues, at a time convenient to you and in the comfort and

privacy of your own home, please contact your local consultant:

Once again the village hall was the

setting for a fantastic and very much

enjo yed per formance b y the

    wonderfully talented group The

Geriactors, as the Village Hall Fund

    Raising Committee organised its

second Murder Mystery Evening in aid

of the Village Hall and this year’s

    chosen charity, the Countess of

    Brecknock Hospice in Andover.

Christopher Evans gave a brief history

of the history of the hospice. In 1988

an appeal was launched by Lady

Brecknock, Dame Mary Fagan and Dr.

    Marjorie Williams to

    set up the hospice at

    Andover Memorial

    Hospital. The

    foundations were laid

    in 1990 and it opened

    t o p a t i e n t s i n

    September of that

    same year.

    ‘A Sting in the Tale’

    written by Ronni

    Davis (also a member

    of the cast) was the

    group’s tenth murder

    mystery and was set

    in the Spanish resort of

    Lloret de Mar at the

    Young at Heart

    Training school for

    holiday reps. The

    audience very quickly

    entered into the spirit

    of the occasion as they

    were introduced to the

    mature prospective

    holiday reps who

    found their training

    course taking an unexpected course

    when the school’s leader, Irving

    Smethurst, came to an unfortunate

end. The audience had the task of

    applying logic, perceptive analysis and

recognition of clues in the script to

identify the murderer and specify the

    reason and modus operandi.

    However, a delicious three course

    meal, served between the scenes,

ensured that they were well prepared

for the task facing them. The

    Geriactors’ acting, singing and

humour, supported by a very effective

Murder and Mystery in Sunny Spain

  • 5

    stage set, sound effects, appropriately

    colourful costumes and mood-setting

    Spanish music ensured an evening

    clearly enjoyed by all .

    The interactive nature of The

    Gericators’ productions makes them

very special with the cast moving

around the tables as the audience eat

and try to absorb and process what

they have seen and heard and yes, the

mystery was solved - by Table 1.

    Warmest congratulations to them for

exercising their little grey cells so

successfully. At the end of the

    evening John Vanderpump thanked the

ladies who had prepared a delicious

meal , namely Nola, Louise, Belinda,

Linda and Beryl. Thanks must also go

to all who contributed the scrumptious

desserts, hosts and hostesses and to

John himself for all his hard work. The

evening realised a net profit of £1,260

with £700 going to the hospice. So

many thanks to all who supported the

    event.

Computer lessons will start in March

2017 as an informal café drop-in.

    These sessions will offer one-to-one

    solutions to your questions on

    computers with local experts. Bring

your mobile phone, tablet, iPad, laptop

or Kindle and we will be able to get

you up and running without all that

difficult technical stuff. If you don’t

have any of these devices don’t worry

as we will have some equipment for

you to try and learn on. At the same

time, you will be able to enjoy a cup of

tea or coffee in the Village Hall Jubilee

    Room.

    Some people have already contacted

me for lessons but we need as many as

we can to make this a real success. I

know that lots of people would like to

know how to use their devices, so

don’t be shy, come along and find

    simple answers.

    We will be helping on:

    Browsing the internet

    How to use emails

    Online shopping

    Job searching

    Using mobile devices including

    tablets and mobiles

    Paying bills online

    Skype and Facetime

    Web safety and security

    Booking holidays

We have four local experts and one or

two more would ensure there is always

enough talent on hand so let’s hear

from anyone in the village who wants

to help. If you just want to be part of

the project, how about coming along

and helping to make the coffee? So

there are lots of ways of joining in.

    Sessions will be 10.00am – 12 midday

on the first and third Thursdays of the

    month

Village Hall News Sadly, this will be my last contribution

to The Gauntlet on behalf of the

Village Hall. I had planned to retire as

chairman of the vi llage hall

    management committee (VHMC) at

the AGM in April but I have resigned

    earlier because I profoundly disagree

with the VHMC decision to build an

extension for the pre-school in the

space between the hall and the

    neighbouring properties. In my

opinion this is not in the best long-term

interests of either the Village Hall or

the pre-school and I cannot support it.

    Fortunately, John Vanderpump has

stepped forward to take over my role

and I have every confidence that John

and his team will ensure that the

Village Hall will continue to flourish

    in the future.

I have greatly enjoyed my 8 years as

chairman of the VHMC and I think we

can take great pride in the up-grading

of the Hall that has taken place during

this time. We have raised a

remarkable sum of money in order to

undertake the refurbishment and as a

result we now have a Hall which

compares favourably with any in the

    vicinity.

I would particularly like to thank

everybody who has helped us achieve

so much, many people have been

involved and it is not possible to name

them individually but I am sure people

will continue to come forward and

contribute to future phases of re-

    development of the Hall.

    Finally a reminder that Eileen

Reynolds has once again arranged one

of her very popular coffee mornings

which is to be held on Saturday 18th

    March starting at 10.00am. Everyone

    is welcome.

    Au revoir! Terry Mackintosh

    Village Hall

Mr Vanderpump was present for part

of the meeting in his capacity as the

new Chairman of the Village Hall

    management committee. He explained

the thinking behind the plan to

accommodate the Pre-School in a new

    temporary extension to the Village

Hall and the longer term hope that a

    more permanent solution could be

    found.

    County report

In the absence of County Councillor

    Gibson, the Clerk drew councillors’

attention to the relevant parts of his

written report, namely that HCC had

    purchased several new large vehicles

to fill sections of road and not just

individual potholes; the renewal of the

Lengthsman scheme for a further two

years; and the continuation of the

    county councillors’ devolved budget

scheme which enabled him to help

    fund community projects.

    Broadband

A public meeting would be held in the

Village Hall at 10.00am on Saturday 1

April 2017 at which Virgin Media

would outline their plans for bringing a

better Broadband service to our rural

    area.

    Emergency generator

A site for the emergency use generator

had been agreed with the Village Hall

    which was the primary reception

centre for holding people needing to

evacuate their homes in the event of an

    emergency. Supply and installation

costs of the generator were being met

by SSE as part of their emergency

planning and more information on our

    community emergency planning is

    available on the Parish Council’s

website and in the local shops, Church,

    The Crown and local clubs.

    Speedwatch

Drivers using Old Vicarage Lane as a

‘rat run’ in the early morning and late

    afternoon are causing serious concern

to local residents because of the

    excessive speed used. Representations

have been made to TVBC to install

deterrents to speed and the result of

these are awaited. In the meantime,

extreme care is needed by other road

users. The Lane is one of the sites

approved by the Police for action by

    o u r C o m mu n i t y S p e e d wa t c h

volunteers as part of the deterrent.

    Community Speedwatchers have been

    operational twice in the past month;

you may have seen them in their hi-viz

jackets which in themselves appear to

have a slowing down effect of drivers.

    More volunteers are always required

and should you wish to join in please

    contact the Clerk.

    Ward revision

    A consultation on TVBC warding

revision is under way as a result of a

    recommendation to reduce the number

    of borough councillors. More

information is on the TVBCV website

    and on www.consultation.lgbee.org.uk.

The deadline for responses is 3 April

2017 so plenty of time to have your

    say!

    Dog fouling

    Dog fouling remains problem

especially in the area of Scotts Close

where to the frustration of residents

dogs not only are allowed to foul the

    public highway but also residents’

front gardens. Action is in hand to

    record details of irresponsible dog

owners and submit to the TVBC dog

warden for prosecution. The fine is up

    to £1000.

    Council website

The Council is looking to revamp its

    website and is approaching website

    designers for ideas and associated

    costs.

    Pre-school equipment grant

    The Pre-School successfully applied

for a grant of £512.25 to enable it to

    upgrade its outside creative play

    equipment. Any local organisation

with a constitution and a bank account

can apply to the Parish Council for

    financial assistance; details are

available from the Clerk or the Parish

    Council website.

    Neighbourhood Development Plan

    Work on the Neighbourhood

    Development Plan continues with

    drafting having started. Although the

response to the Housing Needs Survey

was low at 28%, it was sufficient to

form the basis of a statistical analysis

which, in turn, would justify some of

    the conclusions contained within the

    Plan.

    Police

King’s Somborne has a new PCSO,

Storm Perrott, to replace PCSO Jo

    Cole who has retired.

    Contacting your Council

The Parish Council has a dedicated

    website, as does Neighbourhood

Watch, and can also can be found on

    Facebook and Twitter. Much useful

local information can be found on

these and by liking our Facebook page

or Twitter accounts. Please take a

    minute to do this.

As always, a full set of minutes can be

found on the Parish Council website

and in both Cross Stores and Martin’s

    Corner Shop.

All Parish Council meetings are open

to the public and we look forward to

    seeing you there.

    Somborne Sessions, from

Devon to the Bayou … Wow! What a night! For anyone lucky

enough to have been at the sell-out

Sound of the Sirens session … has

your foot stopped tapping yet? A

wonderful night warmed up a packed

hall on a cold January night. A huge,

huge thanks to Abbe & Hannah (aka

Exeter’s The Sound of the Sirens) for a

    superb evening; their new album

comes out in May – definitely one to

    watch out for!

And so, to March’s musical treat: Dana

    Immanuel & The Stolen Band!

“Dana Immanuel … isn’t she the trans

singer that shocked and won the

    Eurovision Song Contest?”

“Err, No – that would be Dana

International! … and just for the

record, this Dana is also most

definitely not the Dana who won the

    Eurovision Song Contest with ‘All

Kind of Everything’ for Ireland in

1970.” Although … on reflection, if

Dana Immanuel and the Stolen Band

did represent us at Eurovision, we just

might stand a chance of actually

    winning…

Dana Immanuel & The Stolen Band,

    who have equally awesome names:

    Feodora Morris, Blanche Ellis, Maya

    McCourt and Hjordis Moon Bradford,

    accompany Dana on guitars, banjo,

    cello, bass, cajón, washboard and

anything else to hand that they can

twang, bang or squeak a musical note

out of. Equally at home in the high-

stakes casinos of Monte Carlo as in the

basement bars of London, Paris and

    Amsterdam, this whiskey-drinking,

    poker-playing outfit blend their

eclectic tastes and the influences of

    bluegrass, folk, blues, Americana and

rock into a heady mix that will

transport you from a hall in Hampshire

    into believing that you’re dodging

    ‘gators and snacking on crawfish

gumbo on the Bayou! All of which is delivered with great musical virtuosity,

    humour and style. Anything missing

for you from that lot? The band will

    be performing old favourites alongside

tracks from their latest CD – Come

With Me. Order your tickets early to

avoid missing out on what promising

to be yet another amazing evening!

The gig is on Saturday, 25 March; the

doors open at 7:30, at King’s

Somborne Village Hall. Tickets are on

sale now (along with details of other

gigs lined up for the Spring) from our

    w e b s i t e – w w w .

    sombornesessions.co.uk. Tickets cost

just £12. (£14 on the night – if there

    any left by then…)

    March walk 6 miles (9.5km) 2.5 hours Sunday 26 March 2017 2:00pm King’s Somborne Village Hall

We leave the village along Winchester Road and take the path past the Beef

Unit. We continue towards Up Somborne before turning left to take the steep

path down to Little Somborne. At Little Somborne we head North to North Park

Farm and the path back towards the village. We take the

permissive footpath that avoids the A3057 and joins New Lane.

Then it is down New Lane before returning to the Village Hall via

    footpath 14 and Muss Lane.

On Friday 3 February, over 22 women

battled the elements for the monthly

Sisterhood meeting in the Village Hall,

but it was certainly worth it! After

Sam Boot told us about the planned

activities for the year and promoted a

few WI events, the evening was

handed over to Luc, Purveyor of Fine

Foods. This is a brand new deli opened

in Latimer Street in Romsey selling a

range of cheese, wine and charcuterie.

See his website for more details.

    www.romseyfinefoodsluc.com

Luc brought a selection of six wines

and cheeses for us to try. He also gave

us tasting notes as well as a share of

his knowledge. Of course, you have to

try several times, just to be sure! We

    d i d n o t

    disappoint in

    our enthusiasm

for red, white and rosé wines from

    F r a n c e a n d S p a i n w h i c h

    complemented the French and English

cheese, along with some French bread.

My bag of empty wine bottles and only

half an empty water bottle tells the

story! The evening was made up of

members as well as guests, so feel free

to join us at our next event: March 3rd

for a practical pilates session. For

    Somborne and

District Society I was pleased to see that so many

members braved the cold weather on

the 25th January to hear Roger Harris

of Timsbury tell us how Royal Mail

was founded in the 17th century and

how it was organised in Test Valley.

He showed items from his collection

of postal history which illustrate how

    the postal service developed.

    When founded, the service was

personal and for the rich and well

educated. It was slow, uncertain and

    often diverted, opened, read, resealed

and despatched again. In 1635, the

public service was founded and all

profits went to the monarch to pay for

the civil war. Post “boys” (of any age)

on horses delivered mail from one

town to another, stopping off at inns to

    change horses. They also delivered

news sheets which led to the

    introduction of newspapers. Local,

temporary services were set up to keep

the travelling King in touch with

London. By 1669, the service had

improved and Stockbridge had its own

    postmaster.

Postal charges were paid by the

    receiver until 1840 when pre-paid

    postage stamps were introduced. Until

then, the charge was based on a

    complicated combination of weight,

distance and the number of sheets of

paper which were folded and wax

    sealed. Envelopes came later.

    Handstamps were introduced in 1784

showing where the letter was posted

and its distance from London. It was

stamped again in London and sent on

its way to its final destination,

    receiving another handstamp and its

    distance from London. This

information enabled the cost to be

    calculated. Mail coaches were

    introduced in 1786 which improved

    the service, often travelling overnight

but at the risk of highwaymen.

    Test Valley’s postal towns were

    Stockbridge, Andover, Basingstoke,

Romsey and Southampton, each run by

a postmaster and his/her family as the

service operated for about 18 hours

    each day, sometimes more.

This was a fascinating presentation on

    a little-known subject. At Roger’s

request, a donation has been made to

the NRLI in lieu of a speaker’s fee.

Have you ever visited Broadlands in

    Romsey? This fine Palladian style

country house was built by the 2nd

    Viscount Palmerston in 1767 with

    landscaped gardens by Lancelot

    ‘Capability’ Brown. It was thought

that much was known about the estate

and its owners but the purchase of its

vast archive by the University of

Southampton in 2010 for £2.8m has

shed new light on previous knowledge.

It includes 1200 letters from Queen

Victoria and the diaries of the 7th Earl

    of Shaftesbury.

Phoebe Merrick, an old friend of the

society, who has access to the archive

    will visit us (continued opposite)

    Money Matters

I just went to see the film ‘I,Daniel

    Blake’ which was a devastating

indictment of the benefits system in

    this country.

Daniel, having worked all his life,

suffered a heart attack but was put on

job seeker’s allowance by the system,

so he had to prove he was looking for

work despite being unable to take on

any job due to his ill health.

All the forms were online, (see

opposite!) all the calls charged him

money and kept him on hold for ages,

    the personnel lacked any humanity,

    and Daniel inevitably suffered a

further heart attack and died as a result

of the stress and degradation caused by

the system that was supposed to

    support him.

    How many people are

    suffering at the hands of

    our faceless and

inhuman system in this village, behind

    a closed door?

Daniel’s friends all offered to help, but

he couldn’t ask them, the problem was

    too big.

If you are suffering like Daniel, get in

touch and I can help you to fight the

system to get the support you need.

However... it is excellent news that the

Village Hall is going to run computer

sessions!! It is all too easy to lose track

    of developments in technology, but

learning something new is one way to

    keep young in your outlook.

This year’s Education Sunday was a

very special one for King’s Somborne

occurring as it did during the year in

which our village school celebrates its

    175th birthday.

The service was conducted by Tim

Sledge, with the help of Ms Bidois

and children from the school. The

    service opened with prayers of

    thanksgiving for everyone involved in

    the children’s education and all

aspects of learning and school life.

The theme of the service ‘Everyone

Matters’ as all are part of the ‘jigsaw’

of school life was introduced with the

help of children from the congregation

    who worked cooperatively to

complete a jigsaw puzzle, only to find

that one vital piece was missing. The

    missing piece was eventually found,

but only after Tim had been accused

of having it and had to empty his

    pocket to prove his innocence!

The emphasis was very much on the

importance of everyone in school, no

matter what their individual talents or

ways of learning. The reading from

Luke 15:8-12 recalled the story of the

lost coin and the joy over its being

found, and this was followed by the

hymn ‘Our God is a great big God’.

Children from the school shared with

everyone facts about the history of

their school and what they love about

    it.

During the service the choir sang and

there were also instrumental pieces on

    the trombone, flute and clarinet.

Other hymns sung were ‘Come on and

Celebrate’, ‘Be still for the presence

of the Lord’ and ‘Will you come and

    follow me’. The collection taken

during the last hymn was given to the

    school’s link school in Kamiaba,

    Uganda.

    The service was followed by

refreshments served in the school hall,

affording all the opportunity to see

around the school and admire the

    impressive examples of children’s

    work on display.

This was a wonderful opportunity for

us all to come together to celebrate the

life and achievements of our school –

the Reverend Dawes, Founder of the

    s c h o o l ,

    would have

    been proud!

Do not worry, the Silence referred to in

the title is about a happy ending to the

events in the play written by SADS

    member Jean Cooper-Moran who has

drawn on local sources of history and

local memories to create a highly

    touching piece.

    An ageing Stockbridge resident, Ann

Street, is taking part in a reminiscence

project being researched by the local

    university. Her recollections serve to

chart life events for her family and for

    the wider community of Stockbridge.

Set at the turn of the 20th century and

after the Great War, the play reveals

the struggles of women seeking to

    become doctors (against rigid

opposition from male members of the

    profession). In addition, the play

    shows dramatically the problems of

men striving to cope with the trauma of

    war.

With an age range of characters from a

12-year-old boy to a woman in her 80s,

the large cast comprises many familiar

faces from SADS as well as several

actors who are new to the Society.

    SADS always welcomes new members

and there are still opportunities to take

    Test Valley Villages Lecture Series

15th March 8pm Broughton Village Hall

Major General Patrick Cordingley DSc FRGS

    Gulf wars and after..

How the two Gulf Wars have shaped the Middle East today

Some would say the First Gulf War ended with unfinished business. This

assumption allowed the West to embark on a series of interventions, starting

with an unjust Second Gulf War, that has led to chaos across the region. How

did this happen and can it be rectified?

For our March lecture, we are pleased to welcome Major General Patrick

Cordingley, who commanded the 7th Armoured brigade (the Desert Rats)

during the first Gulf War. He was subsequently Commander of the 2nd UK

division. Since retiring from the army, he has advised, written, commentated,

and lectured on his continuing observations of defence and Middle East affairs,

as well as his other interests, notably in Antarctica. We expect a lively evening!

£4 entry, no need to book. This includes a glass of wine or juice. Full time

students are free. All are welcome.

In the absence of the President, the

meeting was chaired by our Vice-

    President, Nola Mackintosh. It was

reported that our pre-Christmas visit to

Hinton Ampner had been a great

    success. Weekly walks had

continued, including one at the Hillier

    Gardens, which ended most

satisfactorily in the café. The Book

Club continues and the next meeting

will be on 27 February at “Nutchers”

when the book will be “A Man Called

    Ove” by Fredrik Backman. The

Treasurer was able to report that all

    annual subscriptions had been paid,

and our New Year lunch at the Crown

    Inn had been most enjoyable.

Our first speaker of the year on 11

    January was Carolyn James, who

    described the successful (although

rather arduous) trek round Mont Blanc

which she and her siblings had made to

raise money for Parkinson's UK in

memory of their father Paul Schwabe.

Our February speaker was Mr. Jim

    Musker, whose subject was

    “Woodturning”. Jim, who was ably

supported by his wife, Fiona, not only

    told us about

    woodturning,

    but had brought

    a small lathe on

which he demonstrated the magic trick

of turning a chunk of sycamore into a

very realistic and tactile apple – not

    edible but highly decorative. He

described the various types of wood

and their suitability or otherwise for

    turning, and the importance of

    “inclusions”, flaws in wood which

could sometimes be a weakness but on

    occasion provided interesting details in

finished items. He was a deft worker

and a highly amusing speaker, who

made it look so easy! Members were

able to buy various turned items

(including apples) as a souvenir of an

    enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting will be on

Wednesday, 8 March, at 7.30 pm in

the Village Hall, when Mrs. D. Goetz

will talk about “The History of

    Salisbury”. All are welcome.

At Tiny Tots this half term we have

    continued enjoying some Old

Testament stories. We have had fun

pairing up (and eating) animal biscuits

to remind us of Noah's Ark and

creating lion paintings in response to

finding out about Daniel in the Lion's

    Den.

Love was in the air in the final session

before half term, which fell on

Valentine's Day! The children had a

    wonderful time making heart shaped

notebooks and lanterns to give to their

    loved ones.

It has been great to see some new faces

at Tiny Tots recently and we have been

really enjoying getting to know our

    new members.

    If you would

    like to join us

too, please pop along. We meet each

    Tuesday afternoon in term time,

starting each session at 2pm with a

drink and biscuit (for adults as well as

children)! We then enjoy a story and

    fun activity together, followed by

crafts and end by 3.15 (in time for

school pick-up) with songs and music.

If you find your children are

napping at 2pm, you are very welcome

to join us mid-session. It would be

really great to see you and your

    children there!

The Minister has the last word

This month I begin by sharing with you some words from Anthony de Mello.

    Creation

The Master was known to side with the revolutionaries even at the risk of

incurring the displeasure of the governments.

When someone asked him why he himself did not actively plunge into social

revolution he replied with this enigmatic power:

    “Sitting quietly

    Doing nothing

    Spring comes

    And the grass grows”

As once more we leave winter behind and look forward towards Spring and

lighter nights I invite you to join me in considering that despite all the turmoil

going on around us in the world and in our own nation the seasons are a

reminder to us that there is something far beyond our control which we see all

around us every day in the beauty of the natural world.

I recently had the pleasure of leading my first assembly at the primary School in

Kings Somborne. What a joy and a blessing to see so many eager faces keen to

learn. After all, it doesn’t matter whether you are young or not so young, we can

all enjoy the richness of God’s creation.

    Rev Ruth (Methodist Minister)
