Many things can lead people to counselling. Whatever your reasons, I
offer confidential, non-judgemental counselling, which will allow you to be
fully heard and understood. This means you can make more sense of
your experiences and feelings and can find some relief from distress or
make changes and if appropriate learn ways to ‘self-soothe’.
Currently I am able to offer phone counselling.
I am also a qualified supervisor and mindfulness coach and both are available over the phone too.
I am a senior BACP accredited counsellor, supervisor and clinical lead with over 15 years experience.
My normal practice is in a rural location and we can use nature as part of the therapy and healing.

This is the first article for The Gauntlet for 6 months. I hope you are all keeping as well as possible and have managed to enjoy some of the easing of restrictions over the summer.
However, with coronovirus cases rising, the government is putting more restrictions in place again. We will not be able to begin the lunches or the bus trips in the foreseeable future.
We have sadly lost 3 regular attendees at the lunches: Margaret Bamford, Freddie Biddlecombe and Gordon House, who had only recently joined us. They will all be much missed.
Gill and I are still on the end of the phone if you have any problems or need help to fill in any forms. You may be needing attendance allowance, pension credit or a disabled badge—Gill is trained to fill in forms and can help you through the bureaucracy to get the money or the parking space you need!
It is not just form filling where we can help. We are able to put you in touch with help about all sorts of problems.
I hope you are still being supported by your street wardens, and I have been delighted about how villagers have stepped forward to offer their help to their neighbours.

The Gauntlet is back! After what seems like a lifetime, the full printed edition of our magazine has returned. A lot of head-scratching and imaginative thinking has gone into making this possible. In the past, we have needed a team of 9 to physically put the magazine together—too many people in too small a space. Now, thanks to the Village Hall, we have room to socially distance ourselves; and, now we are allowed 6 workers, with a little extra effort, we can produce the magazine again.

We were absolutely delighted with the response to our Harvest Festival at Little Somborne – it’s hard to say exactly how many visitors we had at the church over the weekend, but it seemed to be busy whenever I went down there. We have had visits from lots of King’s Somborners, not all of whom are among our ‘regulars’ – as well as attracting visitors from as far afield as Selborne and Salisbury.
We have (so far) collected over £140 in donations to The Churches Conservation Trust and over 50 flapjacks have been enjoyed (I hope – they have certainly gone from the box!). There are also some very moving comments in the Visitors’ Book, as well as beautiful contributions of prayers and thoughts pegged to our ‘sharing space’ in the church.
Several visitors told me that their local churches are still shut or not celebrating Harvest this year, due to Covid, so we are absolutely delighted that we have managed to provide a way of celebrating such a special time of year in our farming community, hopefully in safety. (Everyone seemed to be very sensible about using the hand sanitiser, gloves and wipes we provided, keeping distanced and wearing masks, so we have fingers firmly crossed that there will be no ill effects.)
The flowers, fruit, grain (and fungi – amazing mushrooms!) are still looking lovely, and visitors are still coming, so I will let you know if we raise more money.

Harvest at Little Somborne a success

After an absence of six months due to the Covid-19 virus restrictions, 15 members of Kings Somborne WI and 2 visitors were delighted to meet at the Village Hall on the 8th September. Following a greeting from our president, Sarah Pennington, we enjoyed prosecco and cake to celebrate Val Chapman’s 90th birthday. We then settled down to hear Bill Baker’s talk about Bonsai trees.
Bill’s interest in Bonsai started in the 1980s following a visit to an exhibition at Hillier’s Nursery. This led to him joining a local club and progressing from exhibiting, competing and judging at local shows to entering first national and then international events to finally showing at and managing the Bonsai stand at Chelsea.
Bill brought several of his favourite trees to show us including two which had been selected for inclusion in special exhibitions at Chelsea. He explained that Bonsai trees are either grown from seed or collected from the wild as naturally stunted trees found in bare mountain areas or places grazed by animals. The trees are grown on outdoors in traditional flat pots which are often made individually to suit a particular tree. They require regular watering and feeding and need potting on every 3 to 5 years. Some of the trees that Bill brought
were 30 years old but there are examples in Japan which are between 500 and 1000 years old. Once potted trees can be trained by wiring, cutting back the leaders and regular defoliating to remove the larger leaves and thereby forming graceful wider trees with smaller leaves. Bill talked very knowledgeably about his subject and his passion for Bosnai really shone through.
With our grateful thanks for all the hard work of the Village Hall trustees to make the building Covid compliant and secure, all those present thoroughly enjoyed a sociable evening and return to normality. Future events may be affected by the new “rule of 6” but Hampshire Federation of WI’s continue to provide advice and support including turning the Spring Council meeting into a virtual event so that members can still enjoy listening to their guest speaker, Ben Fogle. Visitors and new members are always most welcome.

Winchester Churches Nightshelter has been supporting people experiencing homelessness for over 30 years. Since the COVID19 pandemic, we have stayed
open 24/7 which means the residents can stay on site all day while receiving support and assistance in moving to more permanent accommodation. Each year over 100 residents are accommodated and supported towards finding a
longer term solution.
We would very much welcome donations of the following to enable the Nightshelter to provide a breakfast, lunch and a hot cooked evening meal
every day of the year. Food donated during Harvest time is used to serve over 12,000 meals across the year as well as being given to residents when they
move on to their new home. The donations also enable residents at the Nightshelter and our Move On Houses to undertake their personal laundry and
for the accommodation to be cleaned. Donated items save us over £30,000 each year.

Notes from Stockbridge Surgery
COVID 19 We are all aware that COVID is still very much present and, observing rising cases in some of our own cities, in Europe and the Northern Hemisphere, are working in the expectation of a possible second spike in the Autumn/Winter.
All our planning, in conjunction with Public Health England, the Clinical Commissioning Group and our neighbouring group of practices continues to be based on current and changing guidance. We continue to distance our staff in the work place which requires some to continue to work from home and all staff to wear masks; our clinicians wear scrubs and masks and patients are triaged before being invited to the practice. Where appropriate, consultations continue to be undertaken by telephone and other remote methods. This has been an enormous change in working and consulting for both clinicians and for patients but we believe our efforts have contributed to the reducing incidence of coronavirus in Hampshire and our ability, as a G.P. practice, to continue to work throughout the crisis and to keep our patients, staff and clinicians safe and to provide an uninterrupted service throughout.
Flu vaccination campaign We are now advanced in our planning for the flu vaccination campaign which begins at the end of September. We need to ensure safe distancing between our patients. For this reason we have liaised with some large village halls with good access and parking from which to provide our flu clinics. There is a great deal to consider and to
transport, including resuscitation equipment, refrigerated vaccines, screens, laptops, etc. so we have considered all of these factors when choosing locations.
We are inviting patients, in line with Government guidance and to match the quantities and timings of our vaccine deliveries. We are beginning with our patients who are aged 65 and over and those who are under 65 with significant underlying illness. www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/who-should-have-flu-vaccine. If you fall within these categories please telephone the practice any day after 2.00pm, except on Mondays, to book your appointment slot. Our telephone lines will, inevitably, be busier than usual as our reception team manage the increase in calls. When you arrive for your flu vaccine, please ensure you are wearing a mask and have your coat/jacket removed and sleeve rolled up.
May we repeat our request – for non-urgent needs, please telephone after 2.00pm so those with urgent clinical needs can get through. If the line is engaged, please hang up and try an hour later.
Dr. Ed Gibbons Ed will be taking 5 months’ sabbatical from the beginning of September in order to complete his studies in dermatology. Dr. Laura Watson has been employed to look after Ed’s patient list and cover all the clinical work that Ed would usually do to ensure excellent patient care. Laura was appointed from a short list of outstanding candidates who applied at the beginning of the Summer and we

very much look forward to welcoming her to the practice.
Thank you All staff at Stockbridge have been humbled by the local support received during recent months and would like to express their thanks. We’ve received chocolates, biscuits, cosmetics, home made scrubs and masks, home made visors and a hot cooked meal for staff working through the Easter Bank Holidays – to mention just a few. Most recently so many rallied to provide us with outside space in which to take lunch or coffee breaks, in the fresh air and socially distanced. This has
involved the construction of a patio area and the generous donation of new garden tables and chairs from one of our patients and a parasol from a member of staff who is retiring from the practice – we’re sorry we can’t name everyone but have hopefully conveyed our individual thanks to you all.

Marquee Markets On behalf of the PCC (Parochial Church Council) can I say a big “thank you” to all who contributed to the success of the Marquee Markets this year. I am pleased to report we have raised nearly £3,000 over the five week period for church funds.
Thank you to all the stall holders who manned the stalls, the gentlemen who erected and re-erected the marquees on a number of occasions, the generous benefactors who donated magnificent raffle prizes and in no small part to all our wonderful customers who seem to look forward to the occasion, perhaps this year more so than usual.
Hopefully next year life will be more normal. There are five Saturdays again next year.

Let’s start on a positive note. The annual picnic had to be cancelled but the committee felt that we should replace it if possible, so we organised a “Pimms in the Park”. With the kind permission of John Vanderpump we erected a marquee outside the Village Hall with chairs and tables from the Village Hall. Food was provided by Nola Mackintosh, Eileen Reynolds and several other generous souls; the Pimms was expertly prepared and served by Mike Reynolds.
The weather was in our favour and a splendid afternoon was enjoyed by all as can be seen in the photo.
In my last letter I optimistically advertised our first lecture of the season to be held in the village hall on 23rd September. But the dead hand of Covid has struck again so I will try to
arrange for the lecture to be given by Zoom (or similar) at the usual time. Watch out for an email. Paul McCulloch will give us a review of the Pre-Construction Dig results at Barton Stacey.
In October we will have two lectures, For the President’s Lecture on Tuesday the 13th, Andy Thomas will tell the story of English Freedom. On Wednesday the 28th, John Richards will read us letters from Winston Churchill to his wife and to his mother.
Because these will be online there are, of course, no limits on the number of people watching and all are welcome to join the Zoom (or similar)

Since reopening, the Hall on 1st September, we have applied an addendum to the hiring Terms and Conditions. Following the latest government announcements, a further set of conditions were imposed, so the addendum has now been changed. Hirers are asked to familiarise themselves with these conditions via a link on the hall bookings section on the website. Basically, what the latest directive says is that -
From 14th September, whether indoors or outdoors, people from different households must not meet in more than groups of 6. This limit does not apply to meetings of a single household group or support bubble which is more than 6 people. The Village Hall, following COVID-19 secure guidelines, can host more than 6 people in total, but no one should visit or socialise in a group of greater than 6.
The Addendum has been published in the last two online issues of The Gauntlet, but for those of you who may have missed these, here it is again:
1) Face coverings MUST be worn at all times in accordance with Government regulations.
2) Hirers will be responsible for cleaning the areas they are going to use before and after the period of hire for which each hirer will be given an extra 30 minutes free of charge before and after their session.
3) Hirers will be responsible for cleaning their own equipment before and after their session.
4) Any toys currently on site should
not be used, so hirers must bring their own toys and take them home afterwards.
5) Hirers will be responsible for keeping a record of the names, addresses and email of all those attending each session.
6) A one-way system will be implemented. Enter through the main front entrance for all rooms but leave the Main Hall by the rear door, the Jubilee Room by the recreation ground doors and the Committee Room by the fire exit.
7) Currently the disabled toilet will be the only one available which must be cleaned before and after each use and accessed using the one-way system.

On a brighter note I am very pleased to report that we have been given a grant by TVBC that will enable us to refurbish the gents. toilets and also purchase equipment to improve the
facilities at the hall to help us implement our marketing plan to ensure we can occupy the space vacated by the Preschool when times return to normal.

Panto Performance Postponed
Interested in taking part in our next panto?
We were hoping to perform our next panto, Snow White, on 29thand 30th
January 2021, and celebrate 30 years of the village panto.
Unfortunately due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to rehearse effectively in the lead up to this date. It’s also unclear what the guidelines for the safe size of socially distanced gatherings will be by this time and we want to ensure the safety and comfort of all our audience members.
We are therefore postponing the 2021 Kings Somborne Pantomime, and plan to reschedule performances for 26th and 27th March 2021 all being well and subject to restrictions being eased by this date.
If you are interested in performing or helping back stage, parts are available both large and small for younger actors and adults, and new members are always welcome.

KSCC retain ‘The Crown’ Although a little more complicated with ECB guidance and socially distant measures to follow, nothing could dampen the competitive atmosphere as the village’s finest… or the best they’ve got… assembled to take on KSCC in early September.
The Crown team graciously suggested we open the batting, and we set about our mini test match with two innings each of 15 overs. There were highs and lows… Mike G for KSCC taking a hat-trick… only to be dropped at the chance for four wickets on the trot. A few KSCC ringers scored well for them, but also gave us a few extras… With retirements set at 25 Gary Mugridge and Captain Phil Pidgeon served us well. The total standing at 109; the chase was set for The Crown.
When it was time for tea at the half way point, The Crown had reached 55; some work to do.
When all had refuelled and families had picnicked all round, the competition was back on. Glad to have some heckling from the boundary
rope, The Crown were able to take some quick wickets: Ollie, Dave, and Chris making a dent in the KSCC batting line up. The final KSCC total was 182. Could The Crown chase it down?
A quick start for them with 20 runs off three overs and a better innings scoring 74 to KSCC’s 73 but The Crown wickets fell and the first innings lead from KSCC gave us the win. Closer than last year, and a little nerve-racking for next summer…The Crown finished on 129 for 15 (with a few returning batsman). A successful afternoon once again... here’s to a much more social affair in 2021!
That ends cricket for the summer. A full programme of Wednesday night fixtures will be scheduled for next year; new members are always welcome - contact details are below for anyone interested.

With present restrictions in place, it may well be that the door-to-door collection for this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will not take place. I am hoping for news this week, that is 20th September, from the Poppy Appeal Head Office too late for inclusion in the October edition of The Gauntlet magazine.
It may be that we will organise a couple of static collection points in the village for you
to collect your poppy and hopefully make your donation, if you wish to participate. From mid-October, please look out for advertisements around the village as to what will happen. In the meantime, I have ordered all the wreaths for the various organisations within our community together with personal ones that have previously been asked for. These will arrive in due course and I will deliver to the various representatives having contacted them first either by phone or email.

As a result of COVD19 many of the national charities have suffered from lack of voluntary income and will be affected in the charitable and research work they carry out. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal continues to support our service personnel of today still in theatres of war, but also those still suffering as a result of previous wars and conflicts. They deserve our support.

For four weeks in April we ran our big plant giveaway scheme (Plants for People) in many local communities. With the help of a lot of fantastic volunteers, we delivered 87,575 plants to about 14,500 local households, that is over £480,000 of plants (retail value). We were overwhelmed by the generous responses and the tales of happiness that you told us that our plants brought.
Over a very short time we were able very efficiently to clear all the crops that would have been composted by the time our garden centre customers reopened. Using the income generated by the plant giveaway, we speculatively potted fresh crops to be ready for sale later in the summer. Luckily when the garden centres did reopen demand was really strong and we have had record sales every week since. Sadly many of our visitor centre customers (National Trust, English Heritage, etc.) have not reopened their retail plant areas yet, so we have missed their usual summer custom but
the garden centres have luckily compensated for their loss, with lots of new gardeners in the mood to buy plants.
The future of the nursery is looking more secure again after a chaotic season and we count ourselves very lucky that we were able to find a way through some pretty tough times. We are very aware of many others who are still having to battle on.
We would like say a big THANK YOU to all the hundreds of volunteers in those early weeks, who safely delivered the plants around their local communities, as well as our hero volunteer drivers and nursery helpers who put in so much work to support our hardworking but thinly stretched nursery team. We could not have done it without you all.

With regret, due to the COVD19 Virus and current restrictions, the Winchester Charity Christmas Card Shop in Winchester Guildhall, which usually opens in mid October, will unfortunately not take place this year.
This has been a non-profit scheme staffed by participating charities and we have always in the past received all monies from the sales of cards back for our Church funds.
However, our 2020 Parish Church Christmas Cards will be available in the Village Shops, at Church services and from Sandie Pepperell. An order form will be available in the November edition of The Gauntlet.

Thank you It is six months since Janet passed away and now is the first proper opportunity I have had to say an enormous ‘thank you’ for the many many letters, cards and emails of condolence I and my family, Anna, Mark and Lucy, had from all her friends.
We also cannot thank you enough for lining the route of her last journey through the village - there must have been well over two hundred of you - making it such a memorable occasion.
Donations from all of almost £3,000 was forward to the Countess of Brecknock Hospice who looked after Janet so tenderly.
Finally, we must thank my neighbours in Nutcher’s Drove not only for decking the road with bunting but as a final act of love for lining the whole road in the evening with candles.
Thank you all so much for making her send off so special in such difficult circumstances.

The Vicar has the last word First it was STAY AT HOME! then, STAY ALERT! and now it’s THE RULE OF 6. We are all looking forward to the last word - BACK TO NORMAL.
When will it come to an end? We just don’t know. After a loosening of the reins in the summer holidays with the ‘Eat out to help out’ scheme, as the evenings draw in there is a new nervousness.
Why has this come to us? I’m not sure it helps to look back and blame others, or vent our frustration on government policy, or the sins of the world or even God himself (though he can take it!)
How bad can it get? This isn’t the first plague to hit the world. There were those famous plagues about 1,500 BCE when all the first borne sons of Egypt died. And in the 14th century the Black Death wiped out over half the population in Europe. It could be a lot worse!
How can we help? Perhaps that’s a better question. In the 1520s, there was another plague in Europe. Martin Luther, the famous Reformation monk, gave some advice. It is strangely apt, even though given in a very different era with far less understanding of disease. He wrote with characteristic bluntness:
“With God’s permission the enemy has sent poison and deadly dung among us, and so I will pray to God that he may be gracious and preserve us. Then I will fumigate to purify the air, give and take medicine, and avoid places and persons where I am not needed in order that I may not abuse myself and that through me others may not be infected and inflamed with the result that I become the cause of their death through my negligence. If God wishes to take me, he will be able to find me. At least I have done what he gave me to do and am responsible neither for my own death or the death of others…..” (from a letter published in Letters of Spiritual Counsel, 1527)
Not bad advice for us today. In the language of today it might translate as:- Pray for health and healing, sanitize, wash hands, take your medication, isolate and put your mask on when needed for your benefit and the benefit of others, help wherever you can. Put your life and death into God’s good hands and do not fear.
As we go into the darker and colder months let us keep our heads and do the best we can to avoid infection, let us warm our hearts with as much kindness and compassion as good sense allows, let us wash our hands, cheer our friends and neighbours, avoid asking too many unanswerable questions, not fear and pray that God will help us all through.
