I'll Tell My Ma I'll tell my ma, when I go home,

The boys won't leave the girls alone,

They pull my hair and stole my comb,

And that's alright till I go home,

She is handsome, she is pretty,

She is the belle of Bellfast city,

She is courtin', one two three,

Please won't you tell me who is she?

Albert Mooney says he loves her,

All the boys are fighting for her,

They rap at the door and ring at the bell,

Saying 'Oh my true love, are you well?'

Out she comes as white as snow,

Rings on her fingers, bells on her toes,

Old Jenny Murphy says she'll die,

If she doesn't get the fellow with the roving eye.

Let the wind and the rain and the hail blow high,

And the snow come pouring from the sky,

She's as nice as apple pie,

And she'll he own lad by and by,

When she gets a lad of her own,

She won't tell her Ma when she comes home,

Let them all come as they will,

But it's Albert Mooney she loves still.

BLACK VELVET BAND

In a neat little town they call Belfast, Apprenticed in trade I was bound, And many an hour of sweet happiness, I spent in that neat little town. ‘Til bad misfortune came o’er me, And caused me to stray from the land, Far away from my friends and relations, To follow the black velvet band.

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds, You'd think she was queen of the land, And her hair hung over her shoulder,

Tied up with a black velvet band.

Well, I was out walking one evening, Not intending to go very far, I met with a frolicsome damsel, Plying her trade in a bar. A watch she took from a customer, And slipped it right into my hand, Then the guard came along and arrested me, Bad luck to the black velvet band.

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds, You'd think she was queen of the land, And her hair hung over her shoulder,

Tied up with a black velvet band.

Next morning before judge and jury, For trial I had to appear, The judge said, "You, young fellow, The case against you is quite clear. And seven years is your sentence, You're going to Van Diemen’s Land, Far away from your friends and relations To follow the black velvet band."

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds, You'd think she was queen of the land, And her hair hung over her shoulder,

Tied up with a black velvet band.

So come all you jolly young fellows, I'd have you take warning by me, And whenever you're out on the liquor me boys, Beware of the pretty colleens. They'll fill you with whiskey and porter, Until you're unable to stand, And the very next thing that you know, me lads, You're headed in Van Diemen’s Land.

Her eyes they shone like the diamonds, You'd think she was queen of the land, And her hair hung over her shoulder,

Tied up with a black velvet band.

WHISKEY IN THE JAR

As I was a goin’ over the Cork and Kerry mountains I spied Captain Farrell and his money he was countin’ First I drew my pistols and then produced my rapier, sayin’ “Stand and deliver for I am your bold deceiver”

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar. He counted out his money and it made a pretty penny; I put it in my pocket to take home to darlin’ Jenny. She sighed and swore she loved me and never would deceive me, But the devil take the woman, for they always lie so easy!

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar. I went into me chamber all for to take a slumber, To dream of gold and jewels, and of course it was no wonder: Me Jenny took me charges and she filled them up with water, Called on Captain Farrell to get ready for the slaughter.

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar. Next mornin’ early, before I rose for travel, A came a band of footmen and likewise Captain Farrell, I then produced my pistol, for she’s stole away my rapier, But a prisoner I was taken, for I couldn’t shoot the water.

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar.

They put me into jail with a judge all a writin’ For robbin’ Captain Farrell in Cork and Kerry mountains. But they didn’t take me fists and I knocked the jailer down And bid a farewell to this tight- fisted town.

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar.

WHISKEY IN THE JAR

I’d like to find me brother, the one who’s in the army I don’t know where he’s stationed, be it Cork or in Killarney. Together we’d go roamin’ o’er the mountains of Kilkenny, And I swear he’d treat me fairer than my darlin’ sprotin’ Jenny!

CHORUS

Mu sha ring um du ram da, Whack fol the daddy o

Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in the jar.

There’s some takes delight in the carriages and rollin’ Some takes delight in the hurley and the bollin’, But I takes delight in the juice of the barley, Courtin’ pretty maids in the mornin’ o so early!

CHORUS Mu sha ring um du ram da,

Whack fol the daddy o Whack fol the daddy o, There’s whiskey in

the jar.

WILD ROVER

I've been a wild rover for many a year, And I spent all my money on whiskey and beer, But now I'm returning with gold in great store, And I never will play the wild rover no more.

CHORUS

And it's no, nay, never (clap, clap, clap, clap) No, nay, never, no more, (clap, clap) Will I play the rover (clap) No never, no more.

I went down to an ale-house I used to frequent, And I told the landlady my money was spent. I asked her for credit, she answered me "Nay, such custom like yours I could have any day."

Page 14: The Londonderry Air - Dallas Slow Sessionsdallasslowsessions.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/St.-Pa... · 2018-03-19 · I'll Tell My Ma I'll tell my ma, when I go home, The boys won't

CHORUS

And it's no, nay, never (clap, clap, clap, clap) No, nay, never, no more, (clap, clap) Will I play the rover (clap) No never, no more.

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright, And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight, She said, "I have whiskeys and wines of the best, And the words that I spoke sure were only in jest”.

CHORUS

And it's no, nay, never (clap, clap, clap, clap) No, nay, never, no more, (clap, clap) Will I play the rover (clap) No never, no more.

I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done, And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son. And if they forgive me as oft-times before, I never will play the wild rover no more!

WHEN IRISH EYES ARE SMILING: Bing Crosby Version

When Irish eyes are smiling Sure, it is like a morning spring In the lilt of Irish laughter You can hear the angels sing When Irish hearts are happy All the world seems bright and gay And when Irish eyes are smiling Sure, they steal your heart away When Irish hearts are happy All the world seems bright and gay And when Irish eyes are smiling Sure they steal your heart away

DANNY BOY (Frederic E. Weatherly)

Alan’s Solo:

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling From glen to glen, and down the mountain side The summer's gone, and all the roses falling 'tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.

CHORUS: (Women Sing)

But come you back when summer's in the meadow Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow 'tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

Alan’s Solo:

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying If am dead, as dead I well may be You'll come and find the place where I am lying And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

CHORUS: (Women Sing)

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me And all my dreams will warmer, sweeter be For you will bend and tell me that you love me I shall sleep in peace until you come to me.
