Former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill, persuaded McGlinchey to turn down a contract with EPL giants Manchester United in order to remain with the Bhoys as a youngster. He also played for New Zealand at the 2012 London Olympics.

that sets us apart form other Clubs. Other Clubs definitely have good relationships but that’s the thing about the Mariners, everyone’s willing to work hard for one another so it’s really good.

BI: You’re close mates with Zac Anderson from your days playing at the Queensland Academy of Sport. How did it feel to be reunited back on the Coast?IC: Yeah it was really positive, I live with him as well so it’s been really good and made it an easy transition. I’ve known him for a long time so it’s good to be back with my mates again.

BI: Tell us about your off field project, Footballer Culture… IC: Footballer Culture is one part a clothing brand, and another part a fundraiser as an avenue for football. The clothing we make is football related, casual clothing which you can see at footballerculture.com.au. 30 per cent of the proceeds go into a pool and every time that reaches $500 we donate that back into the football community by any means we can – things like purchasing new balls or new boots for a refugee team that doesn’t really have financial support. Whatever it is we just try to find a way to help, and that’s what it’s about, getting people interested in football and promoting football, and at the same time helping communities. It’s a nice little project we have and everything is Australian made and designed, we make sure we make a point of that. It’s a really rewarding project.

CULTURE KID: 1 X 1 WITH ISAKA CERNAK

In the last edition of The Loose Cannon we brought you an image special to highlight what the boys had gotten up to

throughout their Hyundai A-League 2014/15 pre-season campaign. This week we’ve compiled a few of the best images

from round 1, last Saturday’s 1-0 #F3Derby win over the Jets.

#F3 DERBY PIX SPECIALMitchell Duke has made four appearances for the Socceroos. His first national team game was against Korea Republic at the 2013 EAFF East Asian Cup, and he also featured off the bench for the green and gold against none other than Brazil in Brazil in a friendly last year. A return to top form over the coming months could put Duke back in the frame to represent Australia at the 2015 AFC Asian Cup on home soil.

PLAYER TO PRAISE:

#9 MITCHELL DUKEMitchell Duke put in a tireless performance for the Central Coast Mariners against Newcastle Jets in last week’s #F3Derby, and he will be looking to back up his opening round effort with another solid display this afternoon. Indeed, Duke was the man who popped up late against the Novocastrians to secure the yellow and navy all three points last Saturday, his well-timed run in the box matched by a glancing flick beyond Jets custodian Mark Birighitti sent all bar approximately 500 of the 10,443 people in attendance into derby day delirium.

Known for his all-action style of play, speed and commitment to pressuring opponents with and without the ball, Mitchell Duke’s performance will be key for the Mariners this afternoon. Able to play wide in attack or as a number nine, Duke’s versatility in the front-third is a huge positive for boss Phil Moss as he can tinker with his position throughout the match depending on proceedings.

Central Coast Mariners are the first team through to the semi-finals of the inaugural Westfield FFA Cup after Phil Moss’s men defeated Queensland’s Palm Beach Sharks at Cbus Super Stadium on the Gold Coast on Tuesday evening. Isaka Cernak’s thumping 28th minute strike after delicious combination play between Anthony Caceres, Glen Trifiro and Richi Vernes put the Mariners ahead, but it was 71st minute substitute Matt Sim who stole the show in the final 20 minutes of the game as he fired home an incredible four goals to lift the yellow and navy to a 5-0 win.

The Central Coast Mariners youth team will commence their Foxtel National Youth League 2014/15 campaign tomorrow against Brisbane Roar Youth at the Club’s Centre of Excellence in Tuggerah.

Is there another Maty Ryan, Bernie Ibini, Trent Sainsbury, Mustafa Amini, or Anthony Caceres in the NYL class of 2014/15?

Be there to see Stu Jacobs’ young diamonds up against Roar from 2:30pm. Entry is free!

SIM SCORES FOUR AS MARINERS SMASH SHARKS

YOUNG GUNS!

Michael McGlinchey is a New Zealand born attacking midfielder who has plied his trade in the UK, Australia and Japan. McGlinchey represented Scotland at youth level before switching his international allegiances to the country of his birth shortly after he commenced his time with Central Coast Mariners in the Hyundai A-League. McGlinchey’s versatility and attacking prowess scored him a call up to represent the All Whites at the 2010 FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.

After McGlinchey’s contract with Scottish Premier League Champions Celtic expired, he was released and offered a career lifeline by Central Coast Mariners. He made an immediate impact for the yellow and navy, scoring on his competitive debut against then Hyundai A-League Champions Melbourne Victory. After 133 appearances, 11 goals, one Championship and one Premiership with the Mariners, McGlinchey left the yellow and navy in January

A favourite with the fans, the “Duke, Duke, Duke” chant will undoubtedly lift the proverbial roof off our idyllic bayside base should the former Foxtel National Youth League top goal scorer shine against the ‘Nix this afternoon. Having been rested from the Club’s Westfield FFA Cup quarterfinal against Palm Beach Sharks on Tuesday, we’re betting Duke will come out all guns blazing this afternoon. Watch out, Wellington!

20 lucky The Loose Cannon readers have scored a signed Mitchell Duke player card thanks to Shooting Star Sports Cards this afternoon. If you’re one of our 20 make sure you send a snap of yourself with the card to @CCMariners on Twitter, or e-mail your picture to [email protected]. You can also tag Mitchell Duke on Twitter using @Mitch_Duke8!

2014 for Japan’s Vegalta Sendai on loan. In September this year Central Coast Mariners agreed to a mutual termination of the last five months of McGlinchey’s contract with the Club after he and his management made it clear that he didn’t wish to honour the remainder of his deal.

Nevertheless, McGlinchey brought smiles to many faces during his time with the Mariners – his skill, craft and magic in midfield helped the Club to many successful seasons in the Hyundai A-League and AFC Champions League. Knowing his ability on the ball, the Mariners will need to be on their game to shut down the diminutive Kiwi in order to send McGlinchey and his teammates back to the land of the long white cloud miserable.

25-year-old attacking midfielder Isaka Cernak joined the Mariners at the start of the year having previously called five other Hyundai A-League clubs home. In linking with the yellow and navy, Cernak was reunited with childhood friend Zac Anderson. Ben Ingram caught up with ‘Sarks’ to chat about last week’s #F3Derby, how the culture at the Club rates compared with some other Hyundai A-League outfits, as well as his off-field charitable project, Footballer Culture.

Ben Ingram (BI): You briefly came on at right back on Saturday against the Jets when Storm Roux came off. Is that a position that’s foreign to you? Isaka Cernak (IC): Yea it was foreign but to be honest I felt comfortable. We all know our roles and our coaching staff are pretty vigilant in making sure we know that, so it was comfortable and I’m just happy I could do a job for the team

BI: How was the buzz around the Stadium when Dukey [Mitchell Duke] scored the late winner? IC: It was good, especially in a Derby. The way we won was probably very good for the fans, but it was nerve-racking for us. It’s a great feeling when we hear the fans singing for us and it was a great way to finish the game.

BI: You arrived in January 2014 after spending time with five other Hyundai A-League clubs. How do you find the Mariners in terms of culture?IC: The special thing about the Mariners is the team’s culture. In the change rooms us boys are extremely close and it feels like you’re a part of a family here. That’s something
