All over the world, we’re working to help you keep working. Here’s the latest product launches, distributor updates and customer success stories, which prove Hitachi is making the differenceNEWS

The first Hitachi ZX470H-3LD has been delivered to a customer in the Czech Republic. The new excavator is working at a limestone quarry in Tetín, which is one of three sites owned by Lomy Mořina. Located 35km south-west of Prague, the quarry has 15 employees and lies in the valley of the Berounka river. The limestone is used to produce aggregates and to purify sugar. It is also used in the desulphurisation process at power plants.

The ZX470H-3LD works for 11 hours a day, five days a week. Both the company owner and operator have been satisfied with its performance since it arrived at the quarry last year. In its first 10 months of operation, the ZX470H-3LD had accumulated 1,600 working hours and achieved a daily production rate of 1,000 tonnes of limestone.

The ZX470H-3LD is Lomy Mořina’s first Hitachi excavator and was supplied by the official Hitachi dealer in the Czech Republic. Established in 2002, Kohlschein spol s r.o. is going from strength to strength due to the growing popularity of Hitachi excavators in the heart of Europe.

“Lomy Mořina wanted a 50-tonne excavator with a loading shovel and Hitachi was the only manufacturer to offer that with a machine of this size,” says Kohlschein Manager Jiří Kotouš. “Now the customer is satisfied with the ZX470H-3LD, we hope they will continue to invest in Hitachi construction machinery.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) will present a total of 13 new models on its approximately 4,000m2 stand at Bauma – the world’s largest exhibition for the construction industry. Seven mini excavators, three compact wheel loaders and three large wheel loaders will make their debut among more than 30 machines displayed by Hitachi in conjunction with its official dealer in Germany, Kiesel.

Bauma takes place from 19 to 25 April at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, south Germany. This year’s event is expected to be the biggest ever with a record 555,000m2 of display space to meet demand from a growing number of international exhibitors.

An estimated 500,000 visitors will be able to view the new Hitachi Zaxis mini excavators, ranging from the ZX18-3 to the ZX52U-3. Designed for light applications, such as utilities, gardening and landscaping, the ZX18-3 and ZX27-3 can be easily transported on a trailer with a suitable towing vehicle, driven with a standard EU licence.

The new short-tail models include the ZX29U-3, ZX33U-3 and ZX38U-3. Suitable for construction work and general groundworks, they are ideal for urban spaces. Like the ZX48U-3 and ZX52U-3, all are equipped with Eco Zone technology, which helps to cut fuel consumption while maintaining high productivity. They are suitable for construction and demolition projects, and other confined job sites.

Also ideal for small spaces are the new Hitachi compact wheel loaders, which are a first for the manufacturer. The versatile ZW65, ZW75 and ZW95 have been designed for a variety of applications such as road and general construction, material handling, waste management, agriculture and short-term rental fleets. The quick coupler is compatible with a wide range of attachments, and the Z-bar loader linkage allows for smooth, parallel lifting with a fork. Although compact, the new wheel loaders have a large loading capacity and large fuel tanks for continual operation.

Another exciting development for Hitachi is the launch of the large wheel loader models, the ZW330, ZW370 and ZW550. They are the first machines to be launched in Europe since the alliance between

Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM), Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (Kawasaki) and TCM Corporation (TCM) was formed in October 2008.

The powerful and economical engines have two settings: power boost and fuel efficient, which are designed to boost productivity and efficiency. The large ZW models benefit from Torque Proportional Differential, which is advantageous on uneven terrain. The ZW370 and ZW550 also have superior traction control that adjusts engine speed automatically to suit working conditions, and improved torque control for enhanced overall performance.

As well as the new models, HCME is also launching a new after-sales concept called ‘Support Chain’. This incorporates all of the manufacturer’s after-sales activities, such as the Hitachi e-Service Owner’s Site (satellite system), technical support, warranty, parts and remanufactured components. It aims to highlight the high level of ongoing support available to Hitachi customers from its European dealer network. To find out more, visit HCME at stand F5 504/505/5.

HCME General Manager International Sales Paul Burger says, “We look forward to welcoming dealers, customers and other visitors to our stand at Bauma. With 13 new models on display, plus a wide range of medium, large and special application excavators, we are sure that the Hitachi stand will be a huge attraction.”

One of the first companies in Germany to invest in a Hitachi ZW150 wheel loader was Asphaltmischwerk Remscheid, a concrete and asphalt plant near Wuppertal. It has been a customer of Hitachi since 2006 and also owns a ZW250 wheel loader, which is used at a larger site in Remscheid.

The ZW150, one of the latest additions to the Hitachi wheel loader range, was delivered to this site in December 2008 by official Hitachi distributor Kiesel West. It is operational for up to seven hours a day and is used to transport various grades of asphalt and concrete.

The plant produces approximately 200m³ of cement and up to 5,000 tonnes of asphalt per day. This is used for construction projects and transported to customers within a 40km radius of the plant.

“The main benefit of the ZW150 for our company is that it is ideally suited to the purpose and size of this site,” says Manager Eberhard Korn. “I am very satisfied with its overall performance.”

Operator Lars Sylla says the wheel loader’s Hydro-Static Transmission is particularly useful: “It makes loading the containers easier, and it is better for climbing uphill with a full load. I also find the automatic handbrake a useful safety feature.”

Kazakhstan National University (KazNU), named after 10th-Century Persian philosopher Al-Farabi, celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2009. It also expanded the campus in Almaty with a new building complex for the physics and maths departments. Several contractors worked on the project, including Gidromaster and its fleet of Hitachi construction machinery.

Three of the construction company’s five Hitachi excavators were used at the site: two ZX180Ws and a ZX210W-3, which was delivered in July 2009. The company also owns two medium Hitachi crawler excavators, but co-owner Pavel Vladimirovich Achshaulov is happy with the flexibility offered by the wheeled models. “They are versatile and easy to transport to job sites around the city,” he explains.

Gidromaster bought its first Hitachi excavator from the official Hitachi dealer, Turkuaz Machinery, in 2005. “Turkuaz Machinery has supported us since the beginning,” says Pavel. “It supplied our first excavator on loan, so our loyalty stems from the initial understanding and service we received.”

The reliability of its first excavator is another reason why he has continued to buy Hitachi machines. “All our Zaxis excavators work intensively, but they are all in good condition,” continues Pavel.

“We invested in the ZX210W-3 because it performed as well as the competition and had the same technical features, but was less expensive. We are now in the process of renewing our fleet and we will continue to buy Hitachi.”

Wheeled excavators lead the way

From the olive groves of Vescia to the historic streets of Assisi, the Hitachi ZX60USB-3 proves its versatility on both rural and urban job sites in Umbria, central Italy.

The mini excavator is the machine of choice for both agricultural specialist Petrini and construction firm Casaioli SNC. Both ZX60USB-3s were supplied by SCAI, the official Hitachi distributor in Italy.

Petrini uses the ZX60USB-3 with three buckets of varying sizes and two attachments – a drill to create large holes in the fields and a mowing attachment that clears branches and long grass in olive groves.

Delivered in February 2009, it is the company’s first Hitachi machine and the only excavator it needs. Owner Giovanni Petrini says, “The ZX60USB-3 is quicker and more powerful than the machine we had previously. It is also easier to manoeuvre and more comfortable.”

In Assisi, the ZX60USB-3 owned by Casaioli SNC is used for earthmoving, excavating and groundworks. Delivered in January 2009, it is the latest addition to the company’s Hitachi fleet, which includes a ZX40 and ZX250.

Owner Giorgio Casaioli says, “The ZX60USB-3 is ideal for urban job sites. It is small enough to work on narrow roads, but also powerful for its size. The machine is also quiet, which is important when working in an old city like Assisi.”

The M1 is one of the main routes between the north and south of England. Built in the 1960s, the 310km motorway between London and Leeds was designed to accommodate 67,000 vehicles per day. Forty years later, the daily total has more than doubled to 150,000.

To relieve congestion and improve safety, a £340million road-widening project began in 2007 and is due for completion this year. Approximately 23km of the motorway between junction 25 at Sandiacre and junction 28 at Pinxton has been widened to four lanes.

Hillstreet Construction Limited, through its subsidiary, J&M King, has used its Hitachi excavators to complete earthmoving and drainage on this project. The machines, which range from ZX50U-2 to ZX350-3 models, were supplied by British dealer HM Plant.

Kings of the roadJ&M King chooses Hitachi excavators because they are fast and precise

“We use Hitachi 360-degree crawler excavators because they are the best for our type of work,” says John King. “They are fast and precise, and also retain a good resale value. The complete package of sales, parts and service that we receive from Alan Thornhill and Mark Watson of HM Plant is second-to-none.”

To excavate trenches along the verges and central reservations, Hillstreet Construction utilised One Call Hire’s short-tail swing Hitachi excavators. These include the ZX225USLC-3 and ZX225USR-3. “The traffic is so close and space is so limited that the Hitachi short-tail swing excavators are invaluable for this project,” explains John.

Success continues for TMC

The performance of the EX3600-6BE and EH3500ACII have exceeded expectations at TMC

Finnish nickel and zinc producer Talvivaara Mining Company (TMC) has doubled its Hitachi fleet at the Kuusilampi and Kolmisoppi reserves. The company took delivery of an additional EX3600-6BE excavator and four EH3500ACII dump trucks earlier this year. The new arrivals coincided with the start of full production at the mine, south-east of Kajaani. TMC has also doubled the number of employees since Ground Control’s visit in August 2008, from 200 to approximately 400.

TMC’s latest investment proves the company is satisfied with the performance of the original Hitachi machines. The complete package was recommended by Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) and supplied by Finland’s official Hitachi dealer, Rotator. The first EX3600-6BE to be delivered in northern Europe and the world’s first four EH3500ACII dump trucks work an average 500 hours each per month. Now the site’s primary crusher is working at full capacity, the monthly target for each machine is 600 hours.

HCME Area Manager for Heavy & Mining Equipment Malcolm Edwards says, “HCME and Rotator have maintained a hands-on approach to the project. In terms of product support, service and infrastructure, we are constantly in touch with the team at TMC and will continue to be as the mine grows. We will analyse production at the mine on an ongoing basis and suggest ways to improve this if possible.”

Listed on the London Stock Exchange, TMC raised £71m through a placing of 22 million shares to finance a plant expansion in 2009. The company intends to use the funds to boost production by up to 50 per cent to approximately 50,000 tonnes of nickel each year by 2012.

The largest quarry in Scandinavia has almost doubled its annual output within the last year. After a huge expansion project, Norsk Stein in Norway will produce up to 10million tonnes of aggregates in 2010. Production is expected to continue at this rate for the next 40 years.

The quarry, located 108km north of Stavanger, is responsible for 50 per cent of Norway’s total exported aggregates. Up to 95 per cent of Norsk Stein’s production is shipped to Denmark, Germany, UK, France, Poland and The Netherlands.

Last year’s expansion project included the construction of a 25m-high primary crusher. To create space for this, Norsk Stein invested in a Hitachi EX1200-5 excavator in May 2008. Within three months, it had dug to a depth of 15m below sea level.

Hitachi Zaxis medium excavators prove durable in Greenland

Byens Entreprenør & Minørfirma I/S specialises in blasting, excavating, road and pipeline construction, and demolition projects. Established in 2004, it has ten employees and is based in the capital city of Nuuk.

Since January 2005, the company has been a loyal customer of HP Entreprenørmaskiner A/S, the official Hitachi dealer in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Over the past four years, HP Entreprenørmaskiner A/S has delivered five Hitachi models to Byens Entreprenør & Minørfirma I/S, including a ZX50U-2 mini excavator and a ZW180 wheel loader.

“Our customer chooses Hitachi because the machines continually prove to be the best for working in Greenland’s tough conditions,” says Kurt Hansen, Product Manager at HP Entreprenørmaskiner A/S, which has more than 25 years’ experience in Greenland. “In terms of power and productivity, they are superior to any other brand. Hitachi excavators also have low running costs per hour compared with the competition and their resale value is at the top of the market.”

“We bought the EX1200-5 because we had to clear space for the crusher and no other machine we had could do the job,” says Tommy Lorentzen, transport adviser and machine co-ordinator at Norsk Stein. “For excavators, Hitachi is the best choice.”

Norsk Stein has since taken delivery of a ZX16 mini excavator and ZX190W-3 wheeled excavator from Norway’s official Hitachi dealer, Nanset Standard AS. Considering the size of the quarry and its vast resources, the company uses every piece of construction equipment to its full potential.

“Our Hitachi machines are reliable, which is important because there can be no downtime,” says Tommy. “We are now running at full capacity and rely on each machine fully, all year round.”

Hitachi is extending its presence in the African nation of Angola with the help of its official dealer for Portugal and southern Spain, Moviter. Last summer, it exhibited a wide variety of machines at the 2009 Luanda International Fair (FILDA). The trade show was held in the capital city’s Exhibition Centre and welcomed up to 680 exhibitors from 28 countries.

FILDA is one of the largest trade shows in Angola and showcases companies from various sectors, including construction and agriculture. The 818m2 Moviter stand displayed several Hitachi mini, medium and large excavators such as the ZX35U-2, ZX200LC-3, ZX330LC-3 and ZX520-3 models, plus a ZX190W-3 wheeled excavator and ZW250 wheel loader. It attracted many visitors and, as a result, the dealer gained some new business at the exhibition.

The Angolan construction market is becoming increasingly specialised and competitive. Following the end of a 27-year civil war in 2002, the country is in the process of completely rebuilding its infrastructure. It is also experiencing a sharp increase in economic growth, driven by strong investment in the construction industry.

Many of the contractors involved in current construction projects are Portuguese companies, due to cultural and historic ties between Angola and the European country. In fact, 102 Portuguese firms exhibited at FILDA last year, the largest number from a single country.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV

Belgian Hitachi dealer Luyckx has supplied 31 large Hitachi excavators, including 16 ZX870LCH-3s and six EX1200-5Cs, to Jan de Nul for one of its most challenging projects to date. The international dredging company is working on the Manifa oilfield off the coast of Saudi Arabia, which is capable of producing 900,000 barrels per day.

Jan de Nul has been contracted by state oil company Saudi Aramco to develop the oilfield, which is situated in shallow waters. This makes it impossible to extract oil by traditional offshore methods.

Saudi Aramco decided to exploit the oilfield by reclaiming 25 islands for drilling and steam injection. The islands will be connected to the mainland by a 41km causeway, ten 180m bridges and one 2.4km bridge.

Twelve million tonnes of rock will be required to protect the islands against erosion and any rise in sea level. Jan de Nul has also been appointed to dredge an access channel and a berth for two ships.

Fifteen of the company’s Hitachi fleet are equipped with super long front attachments for the breakwater construction. The remaining excavators are involved in slope finishing, earthmoving, and loading and unloading 10,000-tonne rock barges at the islands.

The company’s work is due for completion by June 2010. Until then, the dealer will continue to support the Hitachi machines in this challenging environment. A Luyckx engineer, based in Saudi Arabia, is on hand to provide technical assistance to Jan de Nul employees for any repairs and maintenance.

Jan de Nul Equipment Manager Mr Menten says, “Our company has been working with Hitachi excavators since 1985. It continues to choose Hitachi because of the reliability of the machines, the support that Luyckx can provide, and its ability to develop customer-specific solutions.”

Luyckx strikes it lucky

Hitachi Zaxis excavators are playing a vital role in the Government of Ethiopia’s Road Sector Development Program. Seven ZX350H-3s and 11 ZX470H-3s, owned by Yencomad Construction, are currently working in the east and south of the country. An additional ten ZX470H-3 excavators have been ordered by the contractor.

The Modjo-Arerti-Gobensa project is the upgrade of a 94km road that will continue until August 2010. The Endeto-Gasera project involves the upgrade of a 60km road through the desert and is due for completion in November. The rocky, mountainous terrain required powerful and durable earthmoving machines. The official Hitachi dealer in Ethiopia, Hagbes Pvt. Ltd. Co., supplied the medium and large Hitachi models with strengthened undercarriages and track links.

The Hitachi ZX470H-3 has seven per cent greater bucket digging force and eight per cent greater arm digging force compared to conventional models. The full track guards reduce wear and damage by protecting track links and lower rollers, which are extremely important for these heavy-duty applications.

Yencomad Construction General Manager Ato Yemeru Nega says, “Hagbes understood the demands of each job site and our commitment to the highest international standards for road and general construction. The Hitachi ZX350H-3 and ZX470H-3 have proved to be durable, reliable and highly productive machines.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) has announced the sale of the first Hitachi machines in Kenya. The order represents a breakthrough for the Middle East Center (MEC), a branch office of HCME, which is based in Dubai.

Four ZX350H-3s, a ZX210H-3 and ZW180 have been sold to China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Rock Plant. An additional ZX470H-3 has also been requested. The machines will be shipped direct from the Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM) factory in Japan, and used for quarry and road construction projects.

General Manager Mutsumi Kitai is extremely pleased that MEC has been able to identify a new market for Hitachi during the global economic crisis: “We are delighted to deliver our first machinery shipment to Kenya. The markets of Libya, Algeria and Egypt are huge, and this modest preliminary order is just the beginning. We are hopeful of many future sales in Kenya’s rapidly developing region.”

MEC also expects this pivotal order to expand the Hitachi brand throughout the surrounding countries, including Tanzania and Uganda. “We look forward to becoming a key player in the East African market,” added Mr Kitai.

JOB REPORT

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL

THE GROWING GLOBAL DEMAND FOR ENERGY HAS REVIVED THE UK COAL INDUSTRY. Ground Control VISITED CELTIC ENERGY IN SOUTH WALES, WHERE THE FIRST HITACHI EX1900-6 IN THE COUNTRY IS HELPING THE COMPANY TO MEET ITS PRODUCTION TARGETS. ITS ARRIVAL IS SYMBOLIC OF A NEW ERA IN THE COMMUNITY’S RICH INDUSTRIAL HISTORY

Coal makes a comeback

A visit to any of the villages in the Amman Valley highlights the historical and cultural significance of coal to South Wales.

Many owe their existence to the growth of mining during the 19th Century. Roads and railways were constructed to help with the industry’s expansion, while shops and services were established to cater for an increasing workforce.

Many of the collieries and pits closed in the second half of the 20th Century, leaving a rich industrial heritage for villages such as Brynaman, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its cinema, which opened in 1926 and was paid for by local miners, is still used today. The Black Mountain Centre keeps the spirit of the mining community alive with displays of historical artefacts and photographs.

However, the story of coal in South Wales is far from over. The region has significant reserves and the fuel currently supplies 14 per cent of the UK’s energy demand. With oil and gas prices rising, and renewable power resources yet unable to plug an increasing global energy gap, coal is still very much in demand.

This is certainly the experience of Celtic Energy, which owns the East Pit open-cast mine, a few kilometres away from Brynaman. The fuel is being sold as fast as it can be produced, according to Director Huw Richards: “We’ve never seen such a need for coal. Global demand has increased due to the growth of industries in countries such as China and India. In the UK, relying on imported coal and energy sources from other countries is becoming more and more challenging.”

East Pit is an extension of a previous site and is named after the East Pit Colliery complex that dominated the area in the early 1900s. Today, the 80-hectare operational area of the mine produces high-quality coal from a dozen seams varying in thickness from 0.3m to 2.5m and lying up to 150m below the surface. “We received planning permission three years ago and have been doing preparatory work since then, such as removing overburden,” says Huw.

The total site covers 400 hectares, with space for soil and overburden storage, coal stocking, water treatment, and an office and workshop. Full production began in September 2008 and is expected to reach 7,000 tonnes per week by 2010. East Pit site will be open for a further seven to eight years.

This is one of three open-cast mines owned by Celtic Energy across a 65-kilometre area in the South Wales coalfield. The company produces just over one million tonnes of coal annually from East Pit, Selar and Nant Helen, and has a turnover of

£50million. It employs 300 people across the three sites and its central distribution centre in Onllwyn.

“Most of the coal goes to Onllwyn for washing, screening and blending,” explains Huw. The distribution centre is 40 kilometres away from East Pit. One of the planning permission conditions of the site was that 50 per cent of production would be transported by rail. Celtic Energy made improvements to the site’s railway line, which once served the deep coal pits that existed here.

Half of the company’s production is transported several times a day by rail to Aberthaw power station, near Barry. The remainder is for domestic use and industrial applications in the UK, such as steel making, cement and brick manufacture, water filtration and glass manufacturing. Approximately 10 per cent of production is exported to Belgium and France for home heating and to Germany, France and Norway for industrial use.

To extract the coal at East Pit, blasting is done twice a day Monday to Friday using three-and-half tonnes of an explosive mixture. The rock is a combination of hard sandstone and mudstone. Three large mining excavators remove the loosened rock and load it into the 16 rigid dump trucks and seven articulated dump trucks that constantly travel around the busy site.

The company’s latest excavator is a Hitachi EX1900-6, the first model of its kind in the UK. It was supplied in September 2008 by Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) and was assembled in seven days. “The Hitachi EX1900-6 doesn’t need any modifications,” says Huw. “With some of the other manufacturers, you have to add ladders and handrails, for example. However, the standard Hitachi models meet all our requirements.”

The delivery coincided with full production at East Pit and it currently operates for 80 hours a week to help Celtic Energy meet its production targets. “It works 16 hours a day, five-and-a-half days a week – it really is in the front line,” says Huw.

Celtic Energy ordered the machine following the success of its predecessor, an EX1900-5. This machine was delivered in February 2007 and still operates at Nant Helen. “We chose the Hitachi EX1900s because of their size, this particular application and the geology,” explains Huw. “The 12m³ bucket is one of the main advantages – it is ideal for the complex geology, characterised by steeply dipping seams and small partings between overburdens. Swing and loading speeds are also important factors. The machines need to be fast.”

The reliability, productivity and fuel consumption of the EX1900-5 encouraged Celtic Energy to buy the new model. “Since the

1. Celtic Energy Director Huw Richards2. From left, East Pit Site Manager Wayne Evans and HCME Area Manager for Heavy & Mining Equipment Malcolm Edwards3. The 12m³ bucket is one of the main advantages of the Hitachi EX1900-6 for Celtic Energy4. The Hitachi EX1900-6 at East Pit is the first model of its kind in the UK5. Celtic Energy’s Hitachi EX1900-5 was delivered in February 2007

EX1900-5 was delivered, it has lost less than a day’s shift of work,” says Huw. “We are also happy with the productivity of the EX1900-6 for this mining application. It meets our expectations.”

The EX1900-6 has several additional benefits, explains HCME Area Manager for Heavy & Mining Equipment Malcolm Edwards: “The main difference between the EX1900-6 and EX1900-5 is the engine. The new model has a Cummins QSK38 engine, the first Tier II off-highway engine to be used for this application in the UK. It has a greater lifespan and is a tier above what we need to comply with European emission regulations.

“The on-board diagnostics and LCD panel were additional key factors in their decision to buy the new model. The levers on the EX1900-6 are also electric instead of hydraulic, providing increased operational efficiency. Other benefits include ease of operation and lower cabin noise levels, which help to provide operators with a better working environment.”

Despite their differences, the -5 and -6 excavators share the same control valves, pumps and transmission. “These components allow for good interchangeability between machines,” says Malcolm. “Celtic Energy can therefore order components that fit both models.”

Investing in another mining excavator also highlights Celtic Energy’s satisfaction with the support and after-sales service it receives from HCME and its official UK dealer, HM Plant.

“Service to us is everything,” says Huw. “When we bought the first machine, there was a strong commitment from HM Plant to support it. They have invested in an experienced, knowledgeable support team. Part of our decision to buy the second machine was returning that compliment to HM Plant.”

The UK dealer opened a depot in nearby Swansea in January 2008. It is currently a base for the Area Manager, two service engineers and a parts specialist. “Hitachi machines have become very popular in South Wales,” says Malcolm. “There are currently over 250 Hitachi excavators in operation, including 12 large excavators, 60-tonne and above. This shows how reliable the Hitachi excavators are, because we can run all these machines with only two engineers!”

Twice a week, an engineer visually inspects the Hitachi EX1900s at Nant Helen and East Pit, checking beneath the machine, the upper structure and the engine. This helps to prevent any problems developing and ensures the machines are working to their full potential.

Celtic Energy can monitor routine maintenance and the performance of each machine on a daily basis. The EX1900s send information via satellite to Hitachi in Japan, which can then be downloaded by customers with a username and password.

“It’s a comprehensive, useful tool and good for spotting trends,” says Huw. “We check the data once a week to measure availability, productivity, cost-effectiveness and fuel consumption, which is obviously a big factor. And I know HCME will look at it too, so this gives us confidence that we are making the most of our investment.”

Looking ahead, Celtic Energy predicts a strong market for coal in the next five years. “UK coal production will increase slightly, and there is potential for it to increase even more,” says Huw. Much depends on planning permission, however, which is a complex and lengthy process.

The company is currently waiting for permission to extend a fourth site at Margam, near Bridgend. “If we receive a positive decision, we could start work in 2010,” says Huw. “This means a potential investment in another Hitachi EX1900-6 and an EX1200-6.”

In 2010, mining at the company’s Selar site will come to an end and restoration of the land will begin. In accordance with planning permission, Celtic Energy replaces overburden, soils and water features to create areas used for agriculture, tourism and leisure.

One of the company’s former open-cast mines at Ffos Las has even been redeveloped as a horse racing course – the first to open since 1927. It’s another example of how the area’s industrial heritage has such an influence on the future, and how the story of coal in South Wales will continue to have a positive effect on the community.

A machine for all seasonsNORWAY’S RURAL LOCATIONS PROVIDE A TOUGH WORKING ENVIRONMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY. HOWEVER, THE HITACHI FLEET OWNED BY WIGGO RøNNINGEN MASKIN HAS PROVED ITS RELIABILITY AND DURABILITY ALL YEAR ROUND, AND THE MACHINES HAVE BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE COMPANY’S IDENTITY

Renowned for scenic fjords and the Northern Lights, Norway is also a prime location for putting the reliability of Hitachi

construction machinery to the ultimate test. The first challenge is the climate. During winter, temperatures can sink to -30°C and much of the landscape is covered in thick blankets of snow.

The second consideration is its geography. Norway’s relatively small 4.8million population is spread out over 385,000 square kilometres of land. The country is Europe’s sixth largest in terms of land mass, but 28th in terms of population. For Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME), this means delivering excavators to rural job sites and providing product support can be more challenging here than in other northern European countries.

Nevertheless, Hitachi machines can be found at work all year round and in even the most remote locations of Norway. For example, in Osen, approximately 100km from the Swedish border, Wiggo Rønningen Maskin AS has a fleet of six Hitachi excavators working on an alpine ski resort. The machines, including a ZX250LC-3, two ZX210LC-3s and a ZX160LC, are excavating up to 50,000m³ of earth. They are also completing groundworks for holiday cabins, creating space for sewage pipes, water and electricity cables.

At the time of Ground Control’s visit in spring 2009, space had been sold for 200 cabins and 40 were to be constructed last summer on the 2,000-hectare site. There are plans to build a total of 460 cabins by 2020, when the Furutangen resort will be complete.

Company owner Wiggo Rønningen is not only responsible for supplying the machines to this site. He also has a 50 per cent stake in the ski resort, which has an 800m slope and a restaurant

for visitors. The ski season runs from October to April, and in the summer months the resort will become an outdoor activities centre for hiking, horse riding and fishing at nearby Osen lake.

Wiggo also owns shares in the factory that manufactures the cabins, which is situated in Rena, approximately 40km away. Before the factory opened in March 2009, ten cabins had already been sold, costing between one and three million Norwegian kroner (between €111,000 and €332,000). Most of the buyers live in Oslo or south Norway and will use the cabins, which can be customised according to the number of rooms required, as holiday homes.

The sales are a sure sign that the global economic crisis has had a minimal affect on this part of Norway. They are also a reflection of Wiggo’s optimistic outlook and confidence in his investments: “Now is a good time to start a new company. If you invest in hard times, you can reap the rewards in better times.”

While other companies may be cutting back due to the downturn, Wiggo is doing the opposite by expanding his business, which specialises in earthmoving, transport, masonry and concrete supplies. Since 2007, he has bought six Hitachi excavators (a ZX250LC-3, two ZX210LC-3s, one ZX210LC, a ZX160LC and ZX25), plus a ZW220 wheel loader from the official Norwegian Hitachi dealer, Nanset Standard. Following Ground Control’s visit, he sold the ZX250LC-3, bought a ZX70LC and ZX140W-3, and ordered a new ZX160LC-3.

The wheel loader is used by Wiggo’s wife, Elin, for loading articulated dump trucks (driven by her 22-year-old daughter, Majken), as well as transporting materials and ploughing snow on the roads

Page 10: The magazine of Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV … · 2015. 3. 18. · 02 Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL 03 Contents 04 News From Norway to

around the ski resort during winter. Delivered in March 2008, it has a larger-than-average 7m³ bucket, which is ideal for lifting light materials.

“We were given a 13-day trial of the ZW220 by Nanset Standard,” says Elin. “After two days, we could already see the benefits. It is powerful, comfortable to drive, and economic to run thanks to low fuel consumption. The most important benefit for me is that it is easy to manoeuvre.”

Wiggo’s first Hitachi model, purchased in 2000, was a FR160 wheel loader. “Compared to the previous model, the ZW220 is more productive and faster to operate,” explains Elin. “It is the best wheel loader we have ever tried.”

The company’s employees (13 in winter and 20 in summer) are equally enthusiastic about the Hitachi excavators. Glen Ove Haagensen operates one of the ZX210LC-3 excavators for earthmoving and digging trenches.

“The hydraulics make it smooth and precise to operate,” he says. “Compared to other machines that I have worked with in the past, I think the ZX210LC-3 is more reliable and durable. The cab is spacious, offers good visibility and in terms of comfort, I can’t think of a better machine.”

Glen’s son, Kai, is currently an apprentice for Wiggo Rønningen Maskin AS and operates the ZX160LC, which is fitted with a tilting, narrow bucket and is used for landscaping. “Hitachi excavators are very precise,” he says. “When we are preparing the foundations of the cabins, we only have a 1-2cm margin of error, but the ZX160LC, for example, allows me to work accurately.”

Kai also uses the ZX25 mini excavator to move earth from around the cabins and dig narrow trenches for cables. “It’s fun to operate, quick and easy to use,” he says. “For working on foundations, it allows one person to do the work of five people.”

Wiggo encourages his operators to take care of the construction machinery during winter. “We shovel the ice off the tracks of the excavators every day so it doesn’t stick overnight,” says Kai. Oil checks and maintenance are carried out regularly and if the temperature sinks below -25°C, the company stops operation. “If you work in conditions of -30°C, the machine works five times harder than in warmer conditions,” explains Kai.

The reliable performance of the Hitachi machines in adverse weather conditions explains Wiggo’s loyalty to the brand for almost a decade. “Reliability is a top priority for me,” he says. “In Norway, you have to travel a relatively long way for new parts, materials and for repairs. To get a new tyre, for example, means a round-trip of 200km. So it’s important to minimise these journeys and avoid downtime.”

Another important factor is the economic benefit of the new Hitachi Zaxis excavators. “Compared to the older ZX210, the newer model is much more economical to run,” says Wiggo.

His relationship with the dealer has also influenced his preference for Hitachi, as Nanset Standard Sales Consultant Fred Partyka explains: “Generally, the decision to buy is 30 per cent product; 70 per cent salesman. The relationship between Wiggo Rønningen Maskin AS and Nanset Standard is based on trust.”

Nanset Standard provides a comprehensive level of service, which Fred believes is vital for customers. “We sell the salesman and the mechanic as part of the machine deal,” he says. “We accompany its delivery and teach the operator how to use it. The customer knows they have our support when they buy a Hitachi model.”

Wiggo clearly values the support and service he has received from Nanset Standard and Hitachi, and is proud of his company’s association with the brand. His business card displays a picture of two distinctly orange excavators, helping his company to portray an image of quality, reliability and durability.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL

Raising the bar in material handlingTHE ADDITION OF TWO WHEELED EXCAVATORS TO THE HITACHI MATERIAL HANDLING RANGE HAS OPENED UP MORE POSSIBILITIES FOR THE BRAND TO COMPETE IN THIS CHALLENGING MARKET. Ground Control INVESTIGATES THE BENEFITS OF THE NEW ZX250W-3 AND ZX360W-3 FOR COMPANIES IN THIS SECTOR

1. Hitachi material handling excavators have been designed following extensive research into the European market 2. The Hitachi ZX250W-3 at Resag is the first of its kind in Switzerland

Reliability and flexibilityOne of the largest recycling companies in Bern, Resag processes 60,000 tonnes of material per year. It takes delivery of resources such as wood, stone and glass from construction and demolition sites within a 25km radius of the 8,000m² site. It also recycles household waste, including paper, glass and garden rubbish.

In addition to a new Hitachi material handling wheeled excavator, the company has a rail excavator and two wheel loaders. The ZX250W-3 was supplied by Swiss dealer Probst Maveg in September 2009. It is used to separate a variety of materials, unload trucks and load containers.

Resag bought the ZX250W-3 to replace an older material handling excavator. It needed a new model that would fit beneath the motorway bridge that stretches across part of its site. Hitachi was able to provide a shorter boom and fit a special arm for waste handling, so that it could work at a maximum height of 8.6m.

“We appreciate the flexibility provided by Hitachi,” says Manager Samuel Beyeler. “We weren’t able to find such an easy solution elsewhere.”

The three-year service package provided by Probst Maveg was another decisive factor in Resag’s purchasing decision. “The most important factor is that the machine is expected to work for 1,500 hours a year, from 7am to 5pm, five days a week,” says Samuel. “We need the machine to work reliably, without any downtime.”

The Hitachi e-Service Owner’s Site (satellite system) enables Probst Maveg to analyse data from the ZX250W-3, so the dealer can react quickly if required. “We are flexible, too, and will do whatever it takes to keep the excavator working,” says Probst Maveg Sales Manager Bruno Sidler.

Resag is satisfied with the performance of the ZX250W-3 and the service provided by Probst Maveg. When the recycling company decides to replace other machines in its fleet, the dealer can now offer a wider range of Hitachi construction machinery. Resag is looking to invest in machines by a single manufacturer: “I just want one person to call, in case I need parts or service,” says Samuel.

Although Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) is relatively new to the competitive material handling sector, it

can draw upon the brand’s impressive performance in the Japanese market. Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM) has developed a range of 15 models, which has helped it to achieve a 30 per cent market share.

“Each machine is designed by Hitachi for the individual needs of the customer,” says HCME Product Manager Special Equipment Mark Burghoorn. “HCME can use this knowledge and expertise to expand the market in Europe.”

The current range of Hitachi material handling machines in Europe consists of four crawler excavators (the ZX210LC-3, ZX250LC-3, ZX350LC-3 and ZX470LCH-3), and two wheeled excavators (the ZX250W-3 and ZX360W-3). All are built using the same expertise as other standard Hitachi Zaxis excavators. Manufactured at the HCM factory in Japan, the material handling excavators are later assembled at the HCME Special Application factory in Oosterhout, The Netherlands.

During assembly, the boom and arm are fitted, as well as additional options such as cab lights and rotating lamps. HCME can also offer a variety of cab types, booms and arms of varying lengths, and wider undercarriages, in order to tailor the machine to exact customer requirements.

The latest additions to the HCME material handling line-up – the ZX250W-3 and ZX360W-3 – have been specifically designed for port and canal-side applications, and handling scrap and waste materials. Both wheeled excavators offer enhanced durability, greater stability and increased lifting capacity, which help to boost productivity as a result.

Hitachi has given both models the largest swing bearing diameter in their respective classes to increase power. The strengthened chassis has been designed exclusively for material handling and is manufactured with thicker plates for increased durability. The wide outrigger has also been specially designed to achieve greater stability.

The new models also feature an improved hydraulic system, which allows for smooth and precise operation. “The initial feedback has been extremely positive,” says Mark. “Operators in Belgium, for example, have said that the quality of the hydraulics is better than the competition and the machines are extremely precise.”

The comfort and safety of operators were key concerns for the designers of the material handling machines. “Our engineers developed a boom damping device that reduces vibration in the cab by up to 60 per cent,” continues Mark. “They also incorporated several special safety features, such as an external emergency switch to lower the raised cab from ground level.”

Ground Control visited the official Hitachi dealers in Belgium (Luyckx) and Switzerland (Probst Maveg) to find out how the Hitachi ZX250W-3 and ZX360W-3 material handling excavators were performing in their respective markets.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL

Stability and high productivity Kraanbedrijf Buermans specialises in loading and unloading barges and ships in Belgium and The Netherlands. Established in 1977, it has 35 employees and is based in Herentals, east of Antwerp.

Each year, the company handles millions of tonnes of material for its customers. It has 14 Hitachi excavators, from a ZX450 to a ZX850 with a long-reach boom. The latest additions to its fleet are two Hitachi ZX360W-3s. One of the new material handling excavators is working at the Albert Canal in the Merksem harbour. The ZX360W-3 unloads soya and corn from 2,000-tonne ships that travel to the harbour from Germany.

Equipped with a grapple that can handle up to five cubic metres of material, the ZX360W-3 unloads the grains into a container that is linked to the Aveve factory across the road. The factory, which produces animal feed, works round the clock and ships dock at Merksem 24 hours a day. The ZX360W-3 was delivered by official Hitachi dealer Luyckx in August 2008 and accumulated 2,200 working hours in its first year.

The operator is impressed with the Hitachi ZX360W-3: “It is smooth and precise to manoeuvre. The cab is comfortable; I like the air conditioning and appreciate the low-noise engine. I also like the hydraulic cab – when it is raised, I can see inside the ship easily without straining and feel safe while I am working.”

Company managers Daniel and Gerry Buermans are satisfied with the stability of the cab, provided by the strengthened chassis and the wide outrigger. Luyckx Sales Manager Frank Naulaerts says, “Stability is important, especially when the hydraulic cab is raised up to 5.4m, and the machine is turning while unloading. The excavator must be positioned 1.5m away from the water’s edge and needs a long boom to reach the ships and barges. Kraanbedrijf Buermans tried other models, but they were not as stable as the ZX360W-3.”

In addition to stability, Kraanbedrijf Buermans values the high level of productivity provided by the ZX360W-3. “This is the top priority for our customers,” confirms Frank. The ZX360W-3 has a lifting capacity of 3.6 tonnes at a reach of 15m and its maximum reach of 16.1m is the furthest in its class.

Productivity is also important to another Luyckx customer with a Hitachi ZX360W-3. Mermans Beton NV produces high-quality, ready-mixed cement for companies across Belgium and The Netherlands. It delivers concrete to construction, agricultural, industrial and private companies within a 40km radius of its depot, which is located next to the Dessel-Schoten canal in Arendonk, near Eindhoven.

The ZX360W-3 is fitted with a 1.8m³ clamshell bucket and unloads sand and gravel from 500-tonne ships up to four times a day. It also loads a conveyor belt that transports the sand and gravel to containers. The plant has a daily production target of up to 1,000m³.

With advanced hydraulics, which allow for precise operation and enhanced productivity, the ZX360W-3 helps the company to meet this target. Within two months of delivery in May 2009, the excavator had 385 hours on the clock.

Before Mermans Beton invested in the new ZX360W-3, it used a machine supplied by another manufacturer. However, the high level of service provided by Luyckx, and the dealer’s close proximity to the job site, convinced the company to invest in the Hitachi model.

1

Operator Geert Huysman says, “Mermans Beton is now closer to its supplier than it was before. The Luyckx depot is only a 30-minute drive away, which is reassuring in the unlikely event of a breakdown, especially when we’re expecting four ships to arrive in one day.”

He is also satisfied with the performance of the Hitachi material handling excavator compared to the company’s previous model: “The ZX360W-3 is much smoother to operate due to its hydraulics,” says Geert. “The arm is also shorter, which makes it easier to manoeuvre.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL

This relates to the company’s development of unique systems such as Hitachi Quick Connect together with Oil Quick, which make it easier to change between different attachments. It also refers to Kiesel’s co-operation with third-party suppliers such as Kocurek, the UK-based manufacturer of bespoke arms, booms and special attachments. “We don’t only sell machines – we provide complete and reliable solutions,” adds Toni. Recently, Kiesel has focused increasingly on customised machines and particular industries, especially demolition, quarrying, recycling and waste handling. The decision to specialise is a clever move by the company, explains Toni: “We want to prove that Hitachi machines are strong in quarrying and demolition, because if they are strong in these tough environments, they are durable enough to be used in any application.” The same argument applies to the performance of Hitachi machines in Germany as a whole. “Germany, like Japan, is one of the world’s engineering hotspots and customers here appreciate quality and have high expectations,” says Toni. “Every manufacturer wants to be strong in this key market – if you can be strong here, you are recognised as strong elsewhere.” Germany is a tough testing ground for construction machinery – highly technical and fiercely competitive. It has led the way in the development of the international wheeled excavator market and all the major manufacturers have a base in Germany. Kiesel product specialists work closely with Hitachi design engineers and are deeply involved with product development. It is no wonder, therefore, that Bauma has such a huge influence on the international construction market. Expectation in the industry for this year’s exhibition is growing. Surprisingly, though, it isn’t all about unveiling new models for Kiesel. “Our business is not only about machines,” reveals Toni. “The requirements of our customers and operators are at the heart of it. “It’s all about customer satisfaction. They should feel comfortable

1. From left, brothers Jochen, Rainer and Toni Kiesel outside the head office in Baienfurt, south-west Germany2. Recycling is an important industry for Kiesel to focus on

From strength to strengthTHE HITACHI MARKET SHARE FOR CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY IN GERMANY HAS DOUBLED SINCE 2005 AND THE BRAND IS NOW AMONG THE TOP THREE CRAWLER EXCAVATOR MANUFACTURERS IN THE COUNTRY. SO, IN ANTICIPATION OF THIS YEAR’S BAUMA EXHIBITION (SEE PAGE 5), HOW DOES GERMAN DEALER KIESEL AND ITS NETWORK OF SUB-DEALERS PLAN TO BUILD ON THIS SUCCESS?

When you ask Toni Kiesel about the kind of people he likes to do business with, it reveals much about the man at the helm of

Germany’s official Hitachi distributor: “I like to work with enthusiastic people, who have hydraulic oil flowing through their veins!” His passion for construction machinery is combined with an extensive knowledge of the global industry and the position of the German market within it. It is clear to see why Kiesel has been so successful in strengthening the Hitachi brand in Germany since 2006. “Over the past three years, we have developed the franchise to more than 30 branches, eight independent sub-dealers and 25 compact line dealers,” says Toni. “Since 2006, we have increased sales of Hitachi machines to more than 1,000 units, year-on-year. Our initial goal was to gain a 10-12 per cent market share for crawler excavators. By 2009, we had achieved 16 per cent.” The dealer’s performance is extremely impressive, even without the context of the global economic downturn. “In 2009, the market was weak,” says Toni. “It fell by more than 40 per cent. However, Kiesel experienced a drop of only around 20 per cent. This is because existing customers invested in new machines and we gained a lot of new customers in 2009. That is the key to our success, in addition to high-quality products and top service.”

One of the reasons why Kiesel has won so many new customers is because it is able to serve companies at a local, regional and national level. It has more than 200 service vans and 450 employees working in its spare parts and service departments across the country. “There are only two companies that cover the whole of Germany and Kiesel is one of them,” confirms Toni. “For example, if our larger customers based in the south need assistance for their Hitachi machines in the north, we can organise it internally for them.” From its head office in Baienfurt/Ravensburg, Kiesel acts as a one-stop shop for customers. “The idea was that departments such as sales administration, financing, human resources and marketing should be centralised,” he continues. “All services regarding the operational business are decentralised with eight subsidiaries, 30 branches and eight sub-dealers. So we are very close to our customers – we can provide a fast response and ensure quick decision-making.” Another crucial factor is the dealer’s ability to provide customised machines to meet the requirements of its customers. “Our aim is to always listen to what they need and have a solution for them,” says Toni.

1

and welcome on our stand. This is a people-to-people business and relationships are extremely important. That’s why, despite increased cost pressures, we will not cut back on hospitality at Bauma.” This isn’t surprising when you consider that Kiesel has remained a family-run company since Toni’s father started out in 1957. Today, the business is managed by Toni and his two brothers, Rainer and Jochen. Their father, Helmut, now aged 77, still works for the company and is in fact one of its best salesmen! The family theme extends throughout the company and employees to its network of sub-dealers. “Our sales and service network is one big family,” says Toni. “Our subsidiaries, sub-dealers and compact line dealers are part of that family, and are the same as our own branches. They have a reputation in their local area, which we could not compete with on the same level. They give us the local touch that we require and we give them national support in return.” To highlight this successful relationship, Ground Control visited two of Kiesel’s sub-dealers, Stoll Baumaschinen in Saarland (see page 26) and Baumaschinen Rhein-Ruhr in North-Rhein Westphalia (see page 27). Both began selling Hitachi machines within the past three years and have already helped Kiesel to increase market share nationwide. With the support of its dealer network over the next five years, Kiesel aims to establish Hitachi among the top three products in the construction machinery market. “To be in the top three means that you are one of the leading companies, and a customer knows they can rely on you,” says Toni.

Delivering customer-specific solutionsTogether with Kiesel, Stoll Baumaschinen is the driving force for Hitachi machines in Saarland, south-west Germany. The family-run dealer in Ottweiler/Fürth celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and deserves much credit for its success in the smallest state of Germany.

Although Saarland has a population of 1.1million (compared to Berlin’s population of four million), all the major brands of construction machinery manufacturers compete for business here. In such a competitive corner of Germany, Stoll Baumaschinen has managed to gain 30 per cent new customers every year since 2006.

The dealer’s enthusiasm for the Hitachi brand is a major factor in its ability to attract new customers. “We live and love Hitachi,” say Company Directors (and cousins) Torsten Stoll and Dieter Martin. “Our aim is to make Hitachi among the top three in the state,” adds Torsten, the son of company founder Roland.

One of their main advantages is that the family originates in Saarland. “It’s very important to local customers that we were born here,” says Dieter. “Everyone knows everyone in Saarland, so people prefer to do business with each other. The mentality here is one of close relationships.”

Stoll Baumaschinen also prides itself in being efficient, flexible and providing customer-specific solutions. “Every customer needs something different, not the everyday standard machine,” says Torsten. “Thanks to our specialist workshop, we can make a machine to suit them.”

A good example of Stoll Baumaschinen’s customer-specific solutions is the ZX670LCH-3 excavator owned by customer AVE. It is working in a landfill site in Zweibrücken, removing up to 1,500m3 of waste every day.

The Hitachi machine loads the rubbish into dump trucks so it can be transported to a more environmentally friendly site. To prevent gases such as methane from entering the cab, Stoll Baumaschinen fitted a special filter to the ZX670LCH-3. This ensures the operator can work all day with a fresh supply of air.

Stoll Baumaschinen also supports the ZX670LCH-3 at service intervals of 500 hours. “We do this on Saturdays, out of working hours, so there is no downtime,” says Dieter.

The Hitachi excavator started working at this site three years ago and has 4,500 working hours. “During that time, it has proved to be 100 per cent reliable and highly productive,” adds Dieter.

AVE is clearly impressed by the performance of its Hitachi machines. Specialising in construction, quarrying and environmental projects, it has 18 models, from the ZX16 to the ZX670LCH-3. The company also owns a ZW310 wheel loader and two Zaxis wheeled excavators.

“Our long-standing customers have been very positive about Hitachi,” says Torsten. “Over the past three years, they have bought more machines and stayed loyal to us. This proves we made the right choice to sell and service Hitachi construction machinery. Our trust in Hitachi and in our close partnership with Kiesel has been repaid by the trust shown us by our customers.”

Gaining ground in demolition Many of the traditional industries are gradually disappearing from Dortmund, west Germany. The city was once home to more breweries than any other city in Europe, but now only one remains, according to Manfred and Harald Ausmeier, Company Directors of Baumaschinen Rhein-Ruhr (BRR).

This is significant for the Hitachi dealer, based in Herne, because the majority of its customers specialise in demolition projects. Eighty per cent of its customers are based within a 100km radius of its head office, which includes large cities such as Dortmund, Bochum and Essen.

The demand for large, specialist demolition excavators is therefore greater than the demand for minis in this region. “The most popular Hitachi excavator is the ZX350-3, followed by the ZX210-3,” says Harald. “The main reasons why our customers opt for these models are because they are powerful, productive and have low fuel consumption.”

One of the dealer’s most loyal demolition customers, Heinrich Becker, is about to take delivery of a new Hitachi ZX350LCN-3. The company has been a customer of BRR since 1993 and had previously used machines from a different manufacturer.

It was so impressed by the performance of its first Hitachi machine, however, that it ordered three additional Hitachi excavators within a year. It now owns ZX250-3, ZX280-3, ZX350-3 and ZX470-3 models.

Heinrich Becker Construction Manager Michael Pfeiffer says, “When we tested the ZX470-3 and ZX350-3, we were very satisfied with the power and technology, as well as the operating costs and customer care package offered by BRR.

“It’s also easy to switch parts between the ZX250-3 and ZX470-3 machines, which saves us time and is cost-effective for maintenance. The Oil Quick system, provided by Kiesel/BRR, was also a factor, as it allows us to change attachments quickly.”

The company’s new ZX350LCN-3 excavator is due to start work on a large demolition site in Dortmund, where its ZX250LCN-3 and ZX470-3 are already working. An old brewery is being demolished

to make way for the Neues Thier-Areal shopping centre. In addition to sales, BRR can also provide machines and

operators to customers on a rental basis. The rental business began four years after BRR was established by Manfred and Harald in 1993. The dealer has a fleet of 200 rental machines, including 40 Hitachi models, from the ZX35 to ZX670-3. This area of the business represents a third of its total revenue.

BRR has 14 service vans and employees, who are responsible for the maintenance of both rental and customer-owned machines. “Service is the most important factor for our customers,” says Harald. “We can respond quickly when we are called to the construction site, which our customers appreciate.”

Michael confirms this: “Heinrich Becker likes the whole package that BRR provides. Our employees know the service team from BRR and vice versa. It’s important to have good relationships.”

POLISH QUARRYING COMPANY WOLIMEX IS RENOWNED FOR PRODUCING HIGH-QUALITY AGGREGATES TO BE USED IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION AND HYDRO-TECHNICAL INDUSTRIES. Ground Control VISITED ITS SANDSTONE QUARRY TO HIGHLIGHT THIS GROWING EUROPEAN MARKET AND TALK TO OWNER EUGENIUSZ WOJAK ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF HITACHI CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY FOR HIS BUSINESS

A promising start in Poland

Since the official Hitachi dealer, Tona, began selling Hitachi construction machinery four years ago, the number of orange

excavators and wheel loaders at work throughout Poland has been steadily increasing. The eastern European country represents a blossoming market for Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME), not least because its GDP has enjoyed sustained growth despite the global economic downturn.

One of the industries that continues to thrive in Poland is road construction. With the help of EU funding, several large projects are currently underway, including one motorway, which leads to Germany. When it is completed in 2011, it will stretch across the southern half of the country from east to west.

Another motorway from the north to the south of Poland is under construction and both motorways will meet at a huge intersection at Katowice. The population of Katowice and the nearby city of Krakow is approximately six million, which means a constant and heavy traffic flow, and a growing demand for infrastructure of this kind.

It’s no surprise, therefore, that the majority of Tona customers in this region are involved in quarrying, providing much-needed materials that are helping to improve the country’s road network. One of the most successful is Wolimex, which produces aggregates at its quarry in Charzewice and various grades of sandstone at its quarry in Męcina.

Quarrying is one of several of Wolimex’s business activities, which include the construction of sewage systems, waste water treatment plants and hydro-technical engineering for regulating rivers, streams and constructing small dams. At the head office in Limanowa,

Wolimex also produces and stores pre-cast concrete products, such as pipes, blocks, curbs and paving slabs.

Wolimex has 300 employees and was established by Eugeniusz Wojak 25 years ago. “When I finished school, my father didn’t think it was worthwhile for me to go to university, so I worked in farming,” he says. In the early 1970s, Eugeniusz worked for a dairy

co-operative and later a gardening company until 1984, when he decided to set up his own company. “And I’ve been suffering ever since!” he says, laughing.

Despite his jovial nature and modesty, Eugeniusz is an astute businessman with experience of a variety of industries. As a true entrepreneur, his passion is for business first and foremost, rather than for a particular industry such as quarrying or construction. Nevertheless, he can still operate each of the four Hitachi machines that his company has invested in over the past two years.

Three Hitachi excavators and one wheel loader work at the Męcina quarry, which opened in 2008. It covers an area of 30 hectares and consists of six levels, reaching up to approximately 480m high. At ground level, a ZX470LCH-3 loads the primary crusher, which produces four different sizes of material. On the third level of the quarry, a ZX670LCH-3 loads large dump trucks with sandstone. On the fourth, a ZX210-3 excavates the sandstone and works with another excavator fitted with a breaker.

A ZW310 wheel loader is used to transport the various grades of sandstone around the quarry and load customers’ trucks. When it rains, the ZW310 can also be used to distribute stones on the road around the site, so it is easier for the dump trucks to drive safely up- and downhill.

The sandstone from Męcina is used for river regulation projects, road construction and other work. “Męcina currently produces 1,000 tonnes per day, but at full capacity, it could exceed 5,000 tonnes,” says Eugeniusz. The company is currently only using a third of the site’s resources.

Production at both Męcina and Charzewice quarries varies according to demand. “We expect to sell 1,800 tonnes of material per day,” says Eugeniusz. “However, two new companies have recently opened quarries in the area, so we are facing some tough competition.”

To stay ahead of its rivals, Wolimex relies on its established reputation for producing high-quality aggregates. The Krakow General Directorate for Roads and Motorways tests the materials produced at the Wolimex quarries to ensure they are suitable for use in the road building and hydro-technical industries.

The company has also been ISO-certified for ten years and received an environmental ISO certificate five years ago. In addition to this, several regional and industry awards line the walls of Eugeniusz’s office. These include a Gold Badge, granted by the Polish Ministry of Economy in 1995.

However, despite its glowing reputation, Wolimex has relatively few loyal, regular customers. This is due to one all-important factor. “Price is very important in Poland and orders can change frequently,” says Eugeniusz. “Customers are always looking for the cheapest prices.”

In such a competitive environment, efficient and reliable machinery is highly valued. “It’s hard to run a company if you have to repair equipment repeatedly,” says Eugeniusz. Cost was also a major factor in his decision to buy Hitachi machines. “Tona Sales Manager Michał Krasoę was able to offer me a competitive price, so that’s why I bought the first Hitachi excavator,” he says.

Further investment in the company’s fleet proves Wolimex’s loyalty to the brand. The latest addition is a new EX1200-6 excavator, which was delivered in November 2009. “The machines

are extremely reliable – they work ten hours a day, six days a week. I’ve also been satisfied with the after-sales service provided by the dealer.”

Tona Service Manager Tomasz Rusek oversees the after-sales service available to Wolimex 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Hitachi machines at Męcina are checked by Tomasz and his team at intervals of 250 working hours and routine maintenance is carried out, such as oil filter changes. “We take good care of the machines, so this ensures that there are no problems,” he says.

Tomasz is based at Tona’s head office in Piekary Slaskie with the rest of the service team. This consists of six staff, who are each responsible for areas such as spare parts, logistics, the workshop (which has 12 mechanics), sales and administration.

As Hitachi is relatively new to Polish customers such as Wolimex, the after-sales service is key. “The machine is supported by a dedicated team and a first-class customer service package. First, we sell the product, then we sell service,” says Tomasz. “To compete with other manufacturers, we offer service contracts and warranties.”

Another point of difference is the Hitachi e-Service Owner’s Site (satellite system). Optional with other manufacturers, it is available

3

as standard with Hitachi. “This is very persuasive for customers, especially those with several machines, because it makes them easier to manage and monitor remotely,” says Tomasz.

The steady growth in popularity of new Hitachi excavators and wheel loaders in Poland over the past couple of years reflects Tona’s success in providing a high level of service. It seems both Wolimex and Tona are succeeding against their respective competitors in Poland. Both companies are united by their strategy of continued growth for the future.

“Our main aim is to keep the business going, whatever it costs,” says Eugeniusz. “It’s hard to predict demand as it can vary from year to year. We expect business at both Męcina and Charzewice to continue to grow in future. Thanks to the EU funding for road construction, we hope the number of our customers will also continue to increase.”

SPECIAL FOCUS

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV

Since it gained independence in 1991, post-Soviet Kazakhstan has been steadily reinventing itself as a prosperous and modern

Eurasian nation. The world’s ninth largest country, it covers an area of 2.7million square kilometres and borders Russia to the north and China to the east.

This vast, landlocked country is extremely rich in natural resources. All the elements from the periodic table can be found here, and it is a leading global supplier of uranium, iron, copper, coal, cobalt, lead and zinc. Kazakhstan is also among the top ten oil-producers in the world. In 2008, for example, its total oil and gas output was 70million tonnes, which is double the volume produced nine years ago.

Sales of its natural resources are responsible for an incredible 8,000 per cent increase in GDP per capita over the past decade from US$70 to US$5,800 in 2008. The reserves have yet to be fully explored, however. The country is also just starting to improve its infrastructure to extract and transport these products to the wider world.

Kazakhstan represents a land of huge opportunity for construction and mining machinery manufacturers such as Hitachi. Since 2003, the brand has been represented by Turkuaz Machinery. The dealer has eight branches throughout Kazakhstan, plus branches in the neighbouring countries of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The head office is located in south-east Kazakhstan, in the former capital city of Almaty. Turkuaz Machinery employs 160 people in total, and approximately 65 members of staff are based in Almaty. As well as sales, marketing and administration departments, the main office also has a workshop and parts centre.

In recent years, Turkuaz Machinery has focused its efforts increasingly on the mining industry in central Asia. Mining Equipment Director Sergey Grekhov explains: “Between 2005 and 2007, we spent a lot of time and money on developing this area of the business and talking to mining companies.”

To convince potential customers of the durability of Hitachi mining excavators, the dealer used an example of a Hitachi EX3500-2 delivered to a gold mining company in Uzbekistan 12 years ago. “It now has 72,000 working hours and is still working productively,” says Mr Grekhov, “and the company recently ordered two new EX3600-6 excavators.”

In 2008, Turkuaz Machinery reached another mining milestone. The delivery of a Hitachi EX5500E-6 to an iron ore mine in northern Kazakhstan (see pages 34-36) was the largest Hitachi excavator to be sold in the CIS. It was delivered to SSGPO, which is owned by Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC).

“Kazakhstan has two large mining corporations, ENRC and Kazakhmys,” says Mr Grekhov. “So far, Turkuaz Machinery has done some good business with ENRC – many of its subsidiaries now buy Hitachi machinery. We are now starting to negotiate with coal companies owned by Kazakhmys, and we are hopeful that we will be able to improve our relationships with these companies.”

Turkuaz Machinery has achieved an approximate 40 per cent market share of the open-pit mining market for Hitachi in all the markets it represents, and a 35 per cent share of the construction market. General Director Kemal Cetinelli says that although Turkuaz Machinery sells a wide range of equipment brands, Hitachi mining machinery is leading the way.

“Our total turnover in 2009 was US$77million, and US$45million of this total was from Hitachi machines,” he explains. “Most of our competitors experienced declines in sales between 2008 and 2009 due to the global economic crisis. However, we are thriving because of the mining industry. It is more stable than construction and will continue to grow.”

Land of opportunityTHE ARRIVAL OF HITACHI EXCAVATORS IN THE MINES OF KAZAKHSTAN IS A SYMBOL OF THE COUNTRY’S TRANSFORMATION INTO A FULLY DEVELOPED INDUSTRIAL NATION. IT ALSO REFERS TO THE VAST POTENTIAL OF THE COUNTRY’S NATURAL RESOURCES. Ground Control VISITED OFFICIAL HITACHI DEALER TURKUAZ MACHINERY AND ITS CUSTOMERS TO FIND OUT HOW KAZAKHSTAN DIFFERS TO EUROPE, AND HOW HITACHI IS HOLDING ITS OWN IN THIS UNIQUE ENVIRONMENT

2

This explains why the company will continue with its strategy of increasing market share in the mining industry. “The most popular Hitachi excavator for mining is the EX3600-6,” says Mr Cetinelli. “This is due to its size and compatibility with 100 to 135-tonne trucks that are used at most mines,” he adds.

Despite Turkuaz Machinery’s success in increasing the popularity of Hitachi mining excavators, the dealer faces challenges in the market. “Customers still compare the costs of hydraulic excavators with the older, Russian rope excavators, because that is what they are used to working with,” says Mr Cetinelli. “Their workshops are also able to repair, modify and manufacture components for Russian excavators.

“Our customers have to be convinced that hydraulic excavators can work in harsh winter conditions, when temperatures can reach -40°C. So, we have to keep spare parts, such as hydraulic cylinders, in stock for example. Hitachi machinery is also used in similar climates in Finland and Canada, of course, but it’s difficult to change people’s mentality in a short space of time.”

With a tough climate and challenging 24-hour work schedules in Kazakhstan, the after-sales service provided by Turkuaz Machinery is vital. The company’s ‘More than the machine’ slogan, created by Mr Cetinelli, refers directly to its importance.

Managing Director Cumali Sahin, who is in charge of spare parts and after-sales, says: “In our business, it is most important to support the customer, not just to sell the machine. After delivery, we organise a team to support the new machine on-site during the warranty period. Once it is sold, it may belong to the customer, but we still feel like it is our equipment.”

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV GROUND CONTROL

Customer support on a grand scaleTo see its after-sales service in action, Ground Control visited the mine owned by SSGPO in Rudniy, 120km from Kostanay in northern Kazakhstan. Impressed by the productivity of the Hitachi EX5500E-6 excavator delivered in October 2008, SSGPO ordered an additional three EX3600E-6 excavators between March and September 2009.

Turkuaz Machinery has a team of one supervisor, two mechanics, two electric mechanics and one spare parts specialist based at the mine, available 24 hours a day. Up to US$500,000 of spare parts are stored here to support the machines during the one-year warranty period.

Vakhtang Tsekhadze, Mining Service Co-ordinator for Turkuaz Machinery, says: “Our aim is to keep the excavators in good condition. We offer SSGPO a ‘cold weather package’ to ensure the machines are prepared for winter. It includes covers for the machines, heating elements on the oil tanks so the hydraulics don’t freeze and greasing liquids that can withstand up to -40°C.

“The average winter temperature here is -20°C, but when the temperature drops to -35°C, we advise operators to work the excavators a little slower, by not filling the whole bucket for example, and we supply winter oils for the machines.”

The cold weather package is installed on the machines at the time of assembly. The third EX3600E-6 was in the final stages of assembly during Ground Control’s visit in September 2009. The excavators are shipped from the Hitachi factory in Japan to Vladivostok, Russia, then transported to Kazakhstan via rail. The journey takes a total of three months. After delivery to the mine, it takes four Turkuaz Machinery engineers and two operators 20 days to assemble the excavator.

The EX5500E-6 and two EX3600E-6s are removing overburden in the 370m-deep Kachar iron-ore mine. Each EX3600E-6 makes four passes per truck load and the EX5500E-6 makes three passes per truck load. The mine is surrounded by 100km of rail that transports iron ore to a processing plant in Rudniy, and on to customers

Reliability in remote locationsIn addition to its EX mining excavators, Hitachi Zaxis models are also proving popular among mining customers in Kazakhstan. In the north-east, Elevatormelstroy, a contractor at a copper and zinc mine, took delivery of its tenth Hitachi excavator in August 2009. The ZX850-3 works alongside a ZX450LC and a ZX470H-3, removing overburden from the mine in Koktay.

Like the Hitachi excavators at Kachar, most of the models owned by Elevatormelstroy are equipped with loading shovels. “Mining customers in Kazakhstan prefer loading shovels to backhoe buckets,” says Turkuaz Machinery Regional Representative of Mining Equipment Dastan Sarsenbayev.

Every two days the overburden is loosened by blasting at the mine. Then the Hitachi excavators load the material into dump trucks, which transport it to a stockpile up to 1.5km away. In the past 10 months, they have excavated 1.6million cubic metres of earth from the mine.

“Hitachi excavators are high-quality, productive and reliable,” says Elevatormelstroy President Dauyenov Sabirzhan Aitzhanovich. “I first bought a Hitachi excavator, a ZX330-1, in 2004 because I heard about the excellent reputation of Hitachi. The ZX330-1 worked for a year and a half, 24 hours a day, without any problems. So I knew I could rely on Hitachi from then on.”

The company’s fleet, which ranges from ZX210-3 to ZX850-3 models, is equipped with heat-insulated fuel and hydraulic systems. “Due to the cold winters in Kazakhstan, it is also necessary to have

a large supply of spare parts,” says Mr Aitzhanovich. The Hitachi excavators have proved easy to operate and maintain.

“We don’t have any complaints at all from our operators,” adds Mr Aitzhanovich. The company has 80 employees working ten-hour shifts on rotation at the mine; 40 during the day and 40 at night. “They prefer working with Hitachi excavators than other brands, because they are comfortable, safe and reliable,” he adds.

The need for reliability is highlighted by the remote location of the Koktay mine. It is 160km from the Turkuaz Machinery branch office in Aktobe, and the final 60km consists of an uneven, unpaved country road. If a machine has a problem, the potential downtime is multiplied in Kazakhstan.

The route to Koktay represents a small part of the country’s 99,000km road network in need of modernisation. It shows the difficult conditions under which Hitachi mining and construction machinery must work, and also the challenges that Turkuaz Machinery is successfully overcoming.

“We are doing our best to develop the business in central Asia, but it can be difficult in this part of the world,” admits Mr Cetinelli. “We are happy with Hitachi, however, and we hope Hitachi is happy with us,” he says, smiling.

1

in Russia and China. Russian company MMK is using the iron ore to produce construction materials for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

All the Hitachi excavators are electric and are attached to huge power cables. ENRC has its own power plant, which means that SSGPO can run the excavators at low cost. Such technology is a stark contrast to the old rope excavators also working in the mine.

Sixty per cent of the 55 excavators are Russian EKG excavators, which began working here in 1988. SSGPO decided to use hydraulic excavators in 2002 and tried a couple of different brands. However, SSGPO was disappointed by their reliability and durability.

Dastan Sarsenbayev, Regional Representative of Mining Equipment at Turkuaz Machinery, explains the importance of these two factors: “Generally, mining is tougher in Kazakhstan than in Europe or the US. The reason being that most operators do not have much experience in using equipment and there aren’t as many qualified employees.”

Therefore SSGPO continued its search for hydraulic excavators that could cope with such a challenging environment. Yuri Arkadyevich, Active Director of Kachar Mine Group, explains: “Our company president wanted high-quality, reliable machines that are powerful, efficient and cost-effective.”

Turkuaz Machinery convinced SSGPO that Hitachi could meet these requirements and the excavators have since proved their worth. Boris Ishcenko, Chief of the Mechanics Department at SSGPO says: “We have evaluated Hitachi excavators on reliability, running costs and productivity. These are the most important benefits of the Hitachi excavators to our company.”

Satisfied with the performance of its Hitachi excavators, SSGPO has now decided to put Hitachi dump trucks to the test. The majority of its 28-strong fleet (95 to 130 tonnes) working at this mine is manufactured by a Belarussian company. In 2009, SSGPO invested in five Hitachi EH3500ACII models, which will be delivered in summer 2010.

The new dump trucks feature AC Drive system technology, which has been used by Hitachi for many years in electric trains. This results in a higher top speed and stronger braking. SSGPO will be expecting similar benefits from the EH3500ACII as the Hitachi EX mining excavators, namely increased productivity and reduced running costs.

The new additions to the SSGPO Hitachi fleet will require additional support staff from Turkuaz Machinery. They will also require a wider entrance to the company’s Soviet-era workshop. The initial investment costs are relatively small, however, in relation to the overall potential of the Kachar mine. Annual production is currently 20million tonnes of iron ore, and the mine has reserves that are expected to last for 100 years. Mining will continue until the site reaches a depth of 764m, a width of 3.3km and length of 3.4km.

The success of Hitachi machinery at SSGPO has wider implications for Turkuaz Machinery, too. “If the SSGPO mine proves successful with the five new EH3500ACII trucks, it will help us to continue our work with other mines,” says Mr Cetinelli. This latest deal is another mining milestone to be celebrated by Hitachi and its dealer in Kazakhstan.
