Who's Who in the Bay -I. The Smaller Ones

Among the smaller ocean folk you are most likely to see during casual boating are flyingfish, jellyfish, velellas, and anchovies.

The California flyingfish is among the most spectacular fish in the world. When aroused, they use their tails as propellers for a long run under the water and a short "taxi" at 30 knots or so on the surface. Then they soar up to 50 feet in height and 200 feet in distance at perhaps 20 knots, using their wings for guidance. Sometimes they touch down, get another boost with their tails and take off again. They grow 12 to 18 inches in length and are used for marlin bait.

In contrast, the jellyfish just floats there, looking something like a purple and white cabbage head. He stings.

WASHINGTON BLVCS.

Velellas or "sailors-by-the-wind" -the filmy little creatures floating on the surface by the mi11ions - are another variety of jellyfish. They are moved by wind pressure on their little sails, which are set on an angle to their bodies - about a beam reach. They are harmless and useless - at least, to humans. Perhaps you would think differently if you were another velella.

A shimmering patch on the surface is likely to be a school of anchovies "breezing." That is what experts call the activity although they don't understand it very well . Some larger fish, like bonita, blue fin tuna, and albacore - who also breeze sometimes - understand that it means fresh anchovy for dinner. When the larger fish attack from below, the anchovies do exactly the wrong thii;ig. They ball \JP into a writhing mass - a near-perfect target. Despite this, and the fact that anchovies are taken in large quantities for bait, fertilizer, animal food, etc., experts do not believe that they are in danger of depletion, as occasionally heard.

On our next trip, with the help of the State Department of Fish and Game again, we'll meet some of the big ones!

New Power Squadron Classes

The Redondo Beach Power Squadron has scheduled two new 12-week evening classes in Elementary Piloting. These classes, which are free of charge, will begin Monday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. at i\lira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach, and on Tuesday, October 3 at 7:30 p .m. at Malaga Cove School in Palos Verdes Estates.

Further details about the Manhattan Beach classes may be had from Dave Becker at 545-1528; about the Palos Verdes classes, from Jim Simpson at 378-0134 or 464-0277.
