Introduction

My father passed away three years ago leaving me with a stack of photo albums my mother hadassembled back in the mid 1950s. Among them were a few photographs of her brothers, sisters, and parents. Rather than let them go to waste, I decided to find out the history behind the Marshfamily of Patoka, Indiana and include the photos. The result is this book.

Some people like to see a complete family tree which includes all persons born up to the date ofpublication, but that could take years and would entail contacting many distant cousins I haven’tseen or heard from in over fifty years as well as locating many I never even knew existed. Sorry, Iwon’t do that. My goal here is to simply document the ancestors of the Marsh family down to thechildren of Virgil and Mary Marsh and be done with it. The cutoff date I used for births was themiddle 1950s. Anyone born after then is not listed.

It is possible some of the information given here is inaccurate or just plain wrong. That is unavoidablepartly because old memories tend to fade and partly because some of my sources even disagreedwith each other. I have tried to cull what information I felt was most accurate. Other errors couldsimply be typos I have missed during proofreading.

Notes

In 1921, a fire destroyed much of the U.S. Census data for the year 1890 depriving us of the ability topiece together a continuous record through the years 1880 to 1900. For this reason, the whereaboutsof some people could not be ascertained during that time.

All photographs, if included, have been placed at the end of this book. Photos of people were pulledfrom the albums mentioned earlier but all headstone photographs were taken by me in the summerand fall of 2010. Source [Dixi] provided pictures of the John Murphy family and the one showingNancy Jane (Stephens) Marsh/Melton sitting in her rocking chair.

I could not have done this research without the tremendous assistance of the the Gibson County(Indiana) Clerk’s office and the Genalogy Department at the Princeton Public Library for marriagesand divorces. I would especially like to thank Ms Vicki Page of the Gibson County Board of Healthfor her invaluable help not only in researching all births and deaths recorded in Gibson County butalso for her ability to translate some of the florid or indecipherable handwritings in the records. Allother research was performed over the internet via www.ancestry.com and a few other websites.

Beginnings

Chapter 1

The First Marshes

The earliest record of a Marsh presence in Indiana seems to be a Nov 03, 1817 marriage between oneJoseph Marsh and a Mary Ann Brent in Switzerland County. In 1830, we begin to see more Marshnames. For example, there was a Ross Marsh in Ohio County, a Charles and Webster Marsh inSwitzerland County, and in nearby Dearborn County lived David, George, Harrison, and Uriah (orZechariah) Marsh. All we can glean from the early census records are just the names of the headsof household—other family members were simply tallied by age group and sex. It wasn’t until 1850that the census began collecting names, ages, and places of birth of all persons in each household.(Relationships to the head of household and places of birth of each person’s parents were added in1880.) Thus, we cannot pinpoint for certain who was the progenitor of the Marsh family of Patokauntil we get to the year 1850. That is when we begin our story.

1.1 Hugh Marsh

Hugh Marsh was born in southeastern Indiana around the year 1821. When we first meet Hugh, heis already married with two children. The 1850 census for Pleasant Township, Switzerland Countyshows Hugh at age 28 living with one Mary Ann age 26 (whom we take to be his wife—maiden nameunknown), two young boys Joseph age 6 and Charles age 4, and a boarder Joseph H Marsh age 53.The census states that all were born in Indiana except for Joseph H who was born in Pennsylvania. We could assume Joseph H was Hugh’s father, but we have no actual evidence as yet. We also cannottell if this is the same Joseph Marsh we saw getting married to Mary Ann Brent or a different one.

Moving on to the 1860 census, we discover Hugh, Mary Ann, and the two boys—now listed as JosephM and Charles R—have relocated to Union Township in Perry County. Hugh and Mary Ann alsohave a new five-year-old daughter Hannah M. Joseph H Marsh is not listed implying he may havepassed away.

In April 1861, the Civil War begins and Joseph and Charles soon leave home to enlist. Around thesame time, Hugh must have lost Mary Ann because we see him taking on a second wife not longafter. The bride’s name was Mary Jane Falkenborough and the marriage took place in Perry Countyon Jan 25, 1862. This was Mary Jane’s second marriage as well because her previous husband was

3

4 CHAPTER 1. THE FIRST MARSHES

Littleton S Falkenborough (Perry County, Oct 24, 1850). It is from this first marriage record thatwe learn Mary Jane’s maiden name was Riddle. Within less than a year, Mary Jane presented Hughwith a daughter Louisa.

At the end of the Civil War (1865), Joseph and Charles return home to a new beginning but wewill talk about them later. By 1870, Hugh and his family relocated again, this time to Pike County,Lockhart Township. There we find Hugh listed as age 51, Mary Jane age 45, Hannah age 15, andLouisa age 8. (The census transcriber read Louisa’s age as 9, but I read the double squiggle as an 8which makes more sense.)

In 1880, Hugh is alone again and living with his now married daughter Hannah Whitney and herfamily in Marion Township, Pike County. Hannah’s full name was Hannah Merilla Marsh and shemarried James H Whitney1 on Aug 02, 1872. The census also shows Hannah and James as havinga son Hugh Whitney age 3. New data fields added to the census that year tell us Hugh’s father wasborn in Pennsylvania and his mother in Connecticut.

The Whitneys must have moved not long after the 1880 census because we next find Hugh Marshgiving marriage yet another try, this time in Gibson County on Jul 23, 1885. His third wife wasSarah A Vanover, born 1846 in Scott County. This was Sarah’s third marriage as well. I find thismarriage interesting because the record (Gibson County Book 6, page 588) gives Hugh’s age as 64years and Sarah’s age as only 39. According to the application, Sarah’s maiden name seems to havebeen Farmer. She listed Jerry as her father and Polly Allen as her mother. But the best thing aboutthis marriage is that Hugh listed his parent’s names as well. Hugh tells us his father was CharlesMarsh and his mother’s maiden name was Turner. Now we know Joseph H Marsh was not Hugh’sfather after all but maybe just an uncle. This is the last record I can find for Hugh Marsh.

1.2 Charles Marsh

Now that we know Charles Marsh was Hugh’s father, it would be nice to learn all we can about himas well. We know Charles was born in Pennsylvania and we have seen someone with the same nameliving in Switzerland County in 1830. Turning to the 1850 census for Aurora Township, DearbornCounty, Indiana we find a Charles Marsh, age 54, from Pennsylvania living with Elizabeth Johnson, age 39, Joseph P Turner, age 6, and Elizabeth Turner, age 15. If this is our Charles, then hewas born around 1796, just about one year ahead of Joseph H Marsh. The fact that he has twochildren living with him having the same last name as Hugh’s mother is strong evidence indeed.(Since it seems to be common practice to name one’s children after relatives, could we then supposethat Charles’s wife’s unknown first name may have been Elizabeth?) The next step was to try todetermine exactly where in Pennsylvania Charles was born. The only way to do that was to searchthe early census data for all of Pennsylvania looking for common Marsh names. As it so happened, names like Joseph, Charles, and Hannah Marsh all showed up in only one location which was PineGrove Township in Warren County in the northwestern part of the state.

1The marriage record gives his name as James L Whitney.

1.3. ROSS MARSH 5

1.3 Ross Marsh

Did Charles have any children other than Hugh? We don’t know for certain, but I suspect thatthe Ross Marsh we saw living in Ohio County was a brother to Hugh Marsh. Census data tells usRoss Marsh was born in Pennsylvania around 1816 which would make him five or six years olderthan Hugh. Like Hugh, Ross also had three children, two boys and a girl, and they all had thesame first names as Hugh’s, only the middle initials differed. In Ross’s family, Charles was olderthan Joseph whereas in Hugh’s family, Joseph was older than Charles. Both daughters were namedHannah. Hugh later named his second daughter Louisa which happens to be the middle name ofRoss’s daughter Hannah. In 1850, Ross and Hugh lived not more than twenty miles apart from eachother, one in Ohio County and the other in neighboring Switzerland County. Also, Ross had livingwith him a 13-year old boy named James Turner. But the clue I like best is the fact that Hugh gavehis second son the full name of Charles Ross Marsh, probably to honor both father and brother.

1.4 Joseph H Marsh

It also would not be a stretch to conclude that Joseph H and Charles Marsh were themselvesbrothers making Joseph H uncle to both Hugh and Ross. After all, both Hugh and Ross had eachnamed one of their sons Joseph. On the other hand, one could argue that Joseph H was Ross’sfather instead of Charles, but I think the fact that Joseph H was living with Hugh instead of Rossin 1850 disproves that.

Then there is the question of where was Joseph H before 1850. He is not listed as head of householdin either of the 1830 or 1840 censuses for Indiana. He could have been living with Charles duringthat time, but counts by age group seem to argue against that theory. What we do find is a JosephH Marsh listed in Warren County, Pennsylvania in 1830 with a wife 20-29 years old, a daughter age5-9, another daughter less than 5, and a son, also less than 5 years old. Could this be him? We haveno way of telling. The ages seem to be right, though.

1.5 Webster Marsh, et al.

What about the other Marshes? The 1850 census shows Webster Marsh living in the next housedown the road from Hugh Marsh, but it tells us Webster came from New Jersey, not Pennsylvania. He could have been a cousin or simply a neighbor who happened to have the same last name.Complicating matters was another Webster Marsh living in neighboring Jefferson County. The 1860census shows this Webster Marsh age 65 as coming from Pennsylvania, has a wife Jane 30 years hisjunior, and a son Oliver age 4. Now this Webster could have been a brother to Charles and Joseph.

The rest of the Marshes (David, George, Harrison, and Uriah/Zechariah) came from Ohio or Ken-tucky and seem to have no connection at all. Since their names never appeared in any recordsleading to the Marshes of Patoka, I have made no attempt to trace their lineages.

6 CHAPTER 1. THE FIRST MARSHES

1.6 The Pennsylvania Marshes

Just for the record, here are the Marsh names I found living in Warren County, Pennsylvania: In1810, there were Hugh and John Marsh; in 1820, there were Benjamin and John Marsh; in 1830,there were Hannah, Hiram, John (two of them), Joseph, Joseph H, Ross, Thomas, and WilliamMarsh; and in 1840, there were Charles, Grant, John, Joseph (two of them), Ross, Thomas, andWilliam Marsh.

1.7 Joseph M and Charles R Marsh

We now turn our attention to the two sons of Hugh Marsh. Joseph and Charles must have been veryclose because in 1861 both of them headed off to Calhoun, Kentucky together to join the Civil War.There is some discrepancy about the enrollment date because one set of records gives May 11, 1861and another set gives Nov 05, 1861.2 However, both sets do agree that the brothers mustered onDec 13, 1861 into Company L of the 3rd Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry Regiment for a three-yearhitch to fight on the side of the Union. After the three years were up, the two brothers re-enlistedon Jan 26, 1864 and mustered in on Feb 05, 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee for another three years. Finally, both records agree that the two brothers mustered out on Jul 15, 1865, at Lexington, NorthCarolina. In the Civil War records, Joseph is listed simply as Joseph M Marsh but his brother islisted under his full name Charles Ross Marsh. (It is possible the ‘M’ in Joseph M may have stoodfor ‘Marion’ because that name was given to another Joseph Marsh later. See page 27.)

After returning home, the two brothers settled in Pike County, Indiana near their father. Joseph wasthe first to get married. On Aug 24, 1869, Joseph M Marsh married Nancy Jane Stephens and in1870, depending on how one interprets the census, the two were either living with her parents and twosisters or by themselves at the same location. Charles meanwhile had found residence with the Sonecouple next door. The Stephens family consisted of the father Elijah Stephens, the mother SarahStephens (nee Sally Jones), and nine children with Nancy Jane being the third youngest. The olderchildren had already moved out leaving behind just the two youngest daughters Charlotte Lydiaand Rachael B, ages 19 and 12. It apparently didn’t take long for young Charlotte to be smittenwith Joseph’s brother because just two years later on Sept 25, 1872, Charlotte Lydia Stephens andCharles Ross Marsh tied the knot.

By 1880, the two Marsh families had moved one more time and finally settled in Gibson County ina small town called Patoka which lies alongside a river of the same name just a few miles north ofPrinceton, the county seat. The name Patoka itself comes from a local indian word meaning “logon the bottom”. It is here in Patoka that we start to see some name changes. The name Stephenschanges into Stevens and Charlotte begins to go by the name Lotta but soon settles on Lydia C.

1.8 Hannah Merilla (Marsh) Whitney

It could not have been long after Joseph and Charles moved to Gibson County that the Whitneyfamily followed suit. We have already seen Hugh Marsh getting married there in 1885 and the 1900

2It could be that the earlier date was when notices were sent out for volunteers.

1.9. LOUISA MARSH 7

census shows the Whitneys already living in Princeton. The Whitney family looks like an interestingone to follow, but we will not do that here. Instead, I will simply give a brief summary. After arrivingin Princeton, Hannah Merilla shortened her name to Rilla, had a daughter named Melvilla whom thecensus lists as Villa, lost her husband James, and saw her young son Hugh Whitney join the Army.Skipping ahead to 1920, we find Rilla living in Kansas with her daughter Villa Clark, Villa’s husbandCurtis Clyde Clark, and his daughter Mildred Mae Clark.3 Finally, in 1930, Rilla disappears andMelvilla (back to her full name) is widowed and living in Texas with Mildred’s family, the Moutrays.

What happened between 1900 and 1920 is unknown. I did find a 1910 census showing a VillaWhitney from Indiana, age 26 and single, serving as a waitress at a hotel in Bartlesville, Oklahomabut I have not bothered to check out that lead. How she got there is anyone’s guess.

That leaves us with Hannah’s son Hugh Whitney. Hugh seems to have distinguished himself while inthe military. Records show he was a sergeant in the Engineering Corps (Company D, 56th Engineers)during the first World War and was rewarded with a burial at Arlington National Cemetery (Section34, site 4481) when he died in 1957. The official record states that SFC Hugh Whitney fromPrinceton, Indiana was born on Apr 14, 1877, died on Feb 12, 1957, and interred on Feb 19, 1957.I have not inquired any further into his military record.

1.9 Louisa Marsh

Louisa was a hard one to track. She dropped off the radar after the 1870 census but popped up ina marriage record in Gibson County under the name Anna Lockhart at age 55. The marriage datewas Oct 17, 1916. From there, I was able to backtrack to a previous marriage on Jul 29, 1882.

3It is believed Mildred was Curtis Clark’s daughter from a previous marriage.

8 CHAPTER 1. THE FIRST MARSHES

Chapter 2

Mary Altha Hicks

After all of the other Marsh children had grown up, married, and moved on, the only ones whostayed behind in Patoka were Virgil and Walter, both sons of Joseph and Nancy Marsh. Walter’swife Eliza Belle, came from the local Booker family and can easily be traced back into Pike County. This leaves us with Virgil’s wife, Mary Altha Hicks, as the one mystery left.

Mary Hicks first appears in the 1900 census in Patoka all by herself living with one Margret L Cooperand her two sons, Felix and Herbert Milburn. Mary is listed as a boarder and housekeeper at the ageof 19. The census gives her birth date as May 1881 but later censuses and her death record indicateshe was born in 1883. If 1883 was the true year, then Mary would have been only 17 instead of 19when she married Virgil later that August. Virgil was 23.

Mary always claimed she was born in Kentucky somewhere in the vicinity of Bowling Green, possiblyButler County. Her death record listed her father as William Hicks and her mother as FrancesBryant. Checking the records, I found several William Hicks in Kentucky but none in the greaterBowling Green area. The same was true for Frances Bryant—with one exception: A personal familytree on www.ancestry.com (see [Hump]) gave a Henry W Hicks being married to a Frances EBryant in Ohio County which is one county to the north of Butler County. Could Henry’s middlename have been William? I contacted [Hump] and he said he didn’t know, but he did give me someinformation about the Hicks and Bryants who once lived in the area. More on that later.

2.1 Lois Trowbridge

The biggest clue that helped to identify Frances Bryant was the knowledge that LaVerne (Marsh)Ford, one of Virgil and Mary’s daughters, always referred to a woman living in Logan, Iowa as “AuntLois” (Aunt Lois Trowbridge). This aunt Lois had a son Wilbur living in California. Could thisLois have been Mary Hicks’ sister?

Starting with the 1930 census for Logan, Iowa, we find a Claude E and Lois S Trowbridge listedwith four children, among them a son Wilbur. Sparing the details, I will simply say that by workingbackwards, we discover Lois’ parents to be Winfield A and Frances E Stacy. Note the middle initial‘E’ on Frances. Winfield was originally from Hocking County, Ohio. The 1925 Iowa census for Logan

9

10 CHAPTER 2. MARY ALTHA HICKS

tells us Lois’ mother’s maiden name was Frances Bryant. Now we are getting somewhere.

Frances E (Bryant) Stacy was born February 1857 (1900 census) somewhere in Kentucky, migratedto Nebraska where she married Winfield Stacy in 1892, had a son in 1893, moved to Logan, Iowa by1895, and had two more children. Their second child was daughter Lois S Stacy who grew up tobecome Lois Trowbridge. The 1900 census states Frances had given birth to a total of seven childrenwith only four still living. Of the four still living, only three were in Logan, Iowa. Could the fourthone have been Mary Hicks in Patoka? If so, then Mary Hicks and Lois Trowbridge were half-sisters,not full sisters as first thought.

We now return to our search for William Hicks. Was his name William or was it Henry as [Hump]reports. We have one clue left we haven’t used yet which is Mary Hicks’ middle name of Altha. Ifwe can find a Hicks or Bryant family that has that name somewhere in its lineage, we might be ontosomething.

2.2 “William” Hicks

Surprisingly, there exists a marriage record from Ohio County, Kentucky dated Oct 25, 1858 unitingone Brice J Hicks with an Altha J Briant. Wow! We not only have a marriage between a Hicks anda Bryant, but we also have the name Altha! According to the 1870 census, Brice and Altha didn’thave any children named William but they did have one Harvey W Hicks, age 9 and one ThomasHicks, age 7.

In 1860, Brice and Altha were living in Ohio County, Kentucky but by 1870, they had moved toSaline County, Missouri. Apparently, they didn’t like living out west because in 1880, we find themback in Kentucky. To confuse matters, the 1880 census listed everyone by their initials only exceptfor Thomas. He was listed as Wm T Hicks at age 17. Aha, they did have a William after all.

Turning to the 1900 census for Daviess County, Kentucky, we find William T Hicks married to oneLaura Hicks. William’s birth date was Feb, 1864 and he and Laura were married in 1883. Thiscannot be the right William Hicks.

What about his older brother, Harvey? Source [Hump] said Harvey Hicks had also been known asHarold Hicks, but the name used most often was Henry Hicks. It is this Henry Hicks that [Hump]said married Frances E Bryant. He added they were married on Mar 11, 1882 which is a little overone year before Mary Hicks was born (May 29, 1883). It looks like we have found Mary’s parents.

2.3 The Hicks and the Bryants

Now to the rest of the information [Hump] gave me. We start off with two brothers, Asa andWilliam Briant, sons of Thomas Briant from Virginia. Asa was born in 1800 and William in 1807.They married first cousins, Eleanor Bennett and Lucretia Bennett. Asa and Eleanor had fivechildren, among them a son William Jefferson Briant. William and Lucretia meanwhile had fourchildren, among them a daughter Altha Jane Briant.1 When the children grew up, William Jefferson

1Source [Hump] said the name Altha was common among the Bennetts.

2.4. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 11

Briant married a woman named Nancy Jane Petty and Altha Jane Briant married a man namedBrice J Hicks. With me so far?

Brice and Altha Hicks had nine children with Henry Hicks being the second. William Jeffersonand Nancy Jane Briant, meanwhile, had five children, the first was a daughter they named FrancesE Bryant (note the change in spelling). It was these two children who eventually got married onMar 11, 1882. In other words, Mary Hicks’ parents were second cousins to each other.

Source [Hump] added he thinks Henry Hicks died young of typhoid fever but couldn’t give adate. He knows several of the Hicks family members were buried in Patterson Cemetery near Bedanot far from Hartford, Kentucky, but doesn’t know if Henry is buried there. I found a website(www.findagrave.com) that lists the names of people buried at Patterson Cemetery but HenryHicks was not among them. His father Brice and uncle Daniel are buried there, though.

2.4 Additional Information

While searching for more clues, I stumbled upon another website where a person by the name of JoeTaylor (see [Tayl]) had transcribed some old newspaper articles from Ohio County, Kentucky. Oneentry I found rather humorous. It was from the Hartford-Herald newspaper for Wednesday June6, 1883. It stated “Son born to HENRY HICKS of Beaver Dam on MAY 29th”. That was Mary’sbirth date.

Asa and William Briant had another brother Horatio T Briant. He was born in Virginia butmoved his whole family to Gibson County, Indiana to live. He and several of his family are buriedin Montgomery Cemetery just south of Oakland City. This means Mary Hicks would have hadrelatives in Gibson County she could visit or live with. For a rather comprehensive genealogy onthe Briant/Bryant families, see source [CCBr].

2.5 Loose Ends

There is little doubt that Henry Hicks and Frances E Bryant were the parents of Mary Hicks andthat Mary was born in the vicinity of Beaver Dam, Ohio County, Kentucky. That newspaper articleitself is almost as good as an actual birth record if it does refer to Mary. We are however still leftwith a few unanswered questions:

• When and where did Henry Hicks die? He is not buried in Patterson Cemetery with his father.

• If Henry and Frances had more than one child, what happened to the others?

• Why did the newspaper article say a “boy” was born to Henry Hicks? Was Mary one of twins?

• What induced Frances to hightail it off to Nebraska leaving Mary behind? Did Henry’s deathhave anything to do with it, or did he go with her?

• When and where did Frances meet Winfield Stacy? Was it in Nebraska or had they knowneach other before?

12 CHAPTER 2. MARY ALTHA HICKS

• Was Mary raised by relatives in Ohio County, Kentucky, by cousins in Gibson County, Indiana,or by Frances in Nebraska prior to her marriage to Winfield Stacy?

• I recently heard a rumor that Mary Hicks was kidnapped as a child. Is this true and did it haveanything to do with Frances moving west or is it just a rumor and a red herring? (The factthat LaVerne Ford knew Aunt Lois in Logan, Iowa implies an amicable relationship betweenLois and Mary Marsh.)

I end my research on the Marsh family of Patoka at this point because this project has taken muchmore of my time than I had planned on spending and I have many more questions than I have timefor. Since I feel I have already achieved my objective of documenting the ancestry of the Marshfamily, I leave these questions for someone else to answer.

Common naming conventions suggest that Hugh’s mother’s (Charles Marsh’s wife’s) first name couldhave been Elizabeth.

There is a weak clue hinting at the possibility that Hugh’s first wife’s (Mary Ann’s) maiden namemight have been Tinker (see Appendix C).

Mary Jane Riddle’s first marriage was to Littleton S Falkenborough, 24 Oct 1850, Perry CountyBook [1:535]. Source [Coon] says Mary Jane’s parents were John Riddle and Mary Baker fromCrawford County, Indiana. He also says Mary Jane died on 02 Jul 1914 in Perry County but doesnot have Hugh Marsh listed as a husband. It is probable he is mixing up two different Mary Janes asthe 1880 census says Hugh was widowed. (There was another Mary Jane Riddle in Warrick Countyborn in 1830 to Thomas and Hulda Riddle. This may be the one [Coon] is referring to.)

Sarah Farmer’s parents were Jerry Farmer and Polly Allen. This was her third marriage as well.Outside of simply Vanover, the names of her first two husbands are unknown.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -I Married John A Melton, 07 Sept 1907, Posey Co. [Book C14:151] From page 78• Born 08 Dec 1845, probably Dubois Co., IN• Died 16 Jul 1917, Gibson Co. [Hazleton H22:49]

Children: None

John Melton’s parents were Richard Melton and Salome McGlothlin (married 06 Mar 1834 in PerryCounty, Indiana). This was John’s second marriage as well. He was previously married to Sarah EMetcalf and had four children by 1900. Sarah was one of twins born in 1849 to John Metcalf andNancy Jane Skelton in Warrick County (Pigeon Township). The other twin, Mary J, apparentlydidn’t live beyond her first few years. Sarah died in Posey County on 05 Jul 1906 [Book H4:54].

John Melton (sometimes mistranscribed as Milton) is listed as being buried at Oak Hill Cemetery inPatoka but no headstone or marker can be found. It is more likely John was actually buried alongsideSarah somewhere in Posey County. John and Sarah’s last-known (1900) residence together was inPoint Township. Sarah had a younger brother Elvis M Medcalf (with a “d”) living in Mt. Vernon,Indiana.

It seems likely Nancy Jane and Sarah Metcalf knew each other and were old friends because both ofthem lived in the same area of Pike County from 1860 to 1870 and may even have attended schooltogether since they were both of the same age. Moreover, they both got married within six monthsof each other, Sarah Metcalf and John Melton on 14 Mar 1869 (Pike Co. [Book 5:211]).

19

Identifying the correct John Melton was tedious because there were at least three other ones in thearea:(1) John H and Sarah A (Parker) Melton near Oakland City but he died before 1880.(2) John W and Mattie E (Tichenor) Melton married in Gibson Co. on 30 Dec 1891.(3) John and Sarrah Melton in Dubois County, Cass Twp in 1880, but ages are wrong.

Source [Dixi] tells me that her mother had once met Nancy Jane and discovered that Nancy smokeda corn cob pipe which was something her mother had never seen before.

John Patrick Murphy was a son of Hugh and Ann Murphy (nee Lattersee) from Ireland. John’suncle, also named John Murphy, worked at the Patoka distillery in 1880. They were all residents ofPatoka.

20 CHAPTER 4. THE JOSEPH M MARSH LINEAGE

Sometime before 1918, the family moved to Fort Wayne, Indiana possibly to be near some of John’srelatives since Fort Wayne seems to have been home to a lot of Irish immigrants named Murphy. For some reason though, Ralph stayed behind in Patoka and was living with his grandmother NancyJane Melton in 1920.

John and Della found employment in Fort Wayne at the Indiana School for Feeble-Minded Youth,John as a fireman at the power plant and Della as a cook.

Source [Dixi] says John and Della moved back to Patoka around 1935–1936. Later, while visitingson Ralph and his wife Ruth in Fort Wayne in 1937, Della fell, broke her hip, and spent some time inthe St. Joseph Hospital. She never walked after that and died four months later from complications.Since Ralph was listed as the informant on her Gibson County death record, it seems probable thatDella actually died in Fort Wayne even though her death record lists White River Township, GibsonCounty as the place of death. Her residence, Patoka, is in White River Township.

Lineage 1.1.2

Charles R Marsh (M)

• Born Mar 1873 in Pike County, Indiana• Died after 1920on Second child of Joseph M Marsh and Nancy Jane Stephens

Little can be deduced about this Charles Marsh. He married a 20-year-old woman who already hadone son and all three headed west. In 1900, they were living in Cowley County, Kansas. In 1910,they were found in Danville, Illinois where Charles was working for the railroad as a boilermakerhelper. In 1920, they were in St. Francois County, Missouri where Charles was back to being afarmer. No record of them was found for 1930.

Virgil was a lifelong resident of Patoka. He started out as a farm laborer but ended up as aboilermaker at the Southern Railroad shop in Princeton. One or two sources give Virgil’s middleinitial as “P” but most give it as “W”.

Mary Hicks’ death record lists her parents as William Hicks and Frances Bryant but investigationsstrongly indicate her father actually went by the name Henry Hicks. That would mean Mary wasborn in Ohio County, Kentucky in or near the town of Beaver Dam not far from Hartford. See hernot quite complete story in Chapter 2.

Frances and Willard Marsh are supposed to have been buried at Oak Hill Cemetery but no headstoneor marker have been located. Since Oak Hill Cemetery does have several small eroded, unreadableheadstones, it is probable two of these belong to Frances and Willard.

4. (F) Edith Marsh Page 36• Born Feb 1916, Illinois• Died. Married (–) Toops

Delta’s parents were Robert Isaac and Lucinda Jane Woods. In 1900, Robert Isaac and LucindaJane moved to Bellmont in Wabash County, Illinois (just west of Mt. Carmel).

The first three children were born in Patoka but the fourth was born in Illinois meaning Delta andthe children probably moved to Danville, Illinois around the time Leroy died. The dates present aproblem, however. The 1920 census clearly shows Delta and the children living in Danville, Illinoiswith her divorced (or widowed) uncle George Woods. The census was taken in January and itexplicitly states Edith was 3 and 11/12 years old which puts her birth around Feb 1916, but Leroy’sheadstone says he died on 14 Dec 1914. Something is amiss. Note also that Leroy was buried inOak Hill Cemetery by himself.

There is no record of Delta remarrying. The last record found carrying her name was the 1942city directory for Danville, Illinois. Delta is most likely buried in Danville, Illinois with her otherrelatives.

The marriage information for Florence Irene Marsh (Aunt Polly) was obtained from her obituaryfound on the www.ancestry.com website. It was published in the Danville, Illinois Commercial-News, Dec. 27, 2008. Married names for sisters Zelma and Edith were listed as well, so I haveincluded them above.

Roy Suddarth’s first wife was Ethel Weatherholt (married 23 Feb 1914 in Perry County [Book 12:253]).It seems Ethel may have died during childbirth because in 1917, Roy listed himself as being widowedwith child on his World War One registration card dated 05 Jun 1917. He was living in Fort Wayneat the time working as a painter at the Indiana School. Two weeks later, he and Marjorie weremarried making Marjorie an immediate stepmother.

No one seems to have any background on David Wilson, Marjorie’s second husband. The bestinformation I can find is a death record of one David A Wilson who died in Milwaukee, Wisconsinon 01 Nov 1964 at age 51. His Wisconsin death certificate number is 033502. Joseph Marsh (M)

• Born 28 Apr 1903, Gibson County, Indiana [Book H9:32]• Died 14 Aug 1973, Wendell, Idahoon Parents were Virgil and Mary (Hicks) Marsh

Joseph’s middle name is not recorded but was probably Marion (see below). This suggests that themiddle name of his grandfather Joseph M Marsh may also have been Marion.

Joe was a controversial character because he married a local girl, had two children (the first bornprematurely), was divorced, married a girl from Princeton, and moved to Perry, Missouri, southwestof Hannibal. There, he set up a photography studio. Later, Joe and his family moved to Wendell,Idaho to live permanently. In Wendell, Joe ran not only a photography studio but also a rock shop(Ice Caves Jewelry) where he would collect rocks in the desert and cut, grind, and polish them tomake jewelry and souvenirs to sell. At least that was in the 1950s.

• Died 01 Dec 1981, Pocatello, ID. Married Patricia June Peterson, 30 Jun 1961, Jerome, ID

Marie Gentry’s parents were Walter and Anna (Stiehl) Gentry of Patoka. Marie was born in theBaldwin Heights area of Princeton (south side). Her father was proprietor of a brickyard. Themarriage record for Joe and Marie was hard to find. It was not indexed under Joseph Marsh butonly under Bessie Marie Gentry. Marie was the one who filed for divorce and was granted custodyof their daughter Maribelle. Marie and Maribelle then moved to Indianapolis to live.

Marie’s second husband was Charles V Stuart (1909–1960). During the 1950s, Marie ran the StuartRestaurant in Indianapolis on North Pennsylvania Street just up from the National Guard Armory. After Charles Stuart died, Marie married Aldus D Wilson (1905–1985).

Marie (Gentry) Wilson is buried at Walnut Hill Cemetery near Fort Branch, Indiana with her secondhusband Charles Stuart. The headstone reads Wilson–Stuart. Marie’s parents are also buried atWalnut Hill. The Gentry family genealogy can be found in [Skel].

Alta’s parents were Joseph Edgar and Etta Jane (Grubb) Campbell of Princeton, Indiana. (Thanksto [Camp] and [DanL] for knowing Alta’s full name, parents, birth, and marriage dates.)

Alta was killed in an auto accident. The newspaper account says Joe, Alta, Joe Jr, and Joe Jr’s wifewere riding along when their vehicle struck a parked car six miles south of Gooding. On a relatednote, I believe both Joe and Joe Jr died in their own auto accidents as well but cannot re-locate thesources any more to verify this.

One source says Joe Jr was born in Pike County, Indiana but others say Perry, Missouri (RallsCounty) where Joe and Alta lived for a few years after leaving Indiana. Joe Jr’s middle name wasMarion. He graduated from Idaho State University in 1960 with a degree in accounting. His wifewas born in 1943 and they had one daughter in 1962.

• Born 21 Jun 1923, Gibson County, Indiana [Book H22:17]• Died 06 Mar 1984, Opelika, Lee County, Alabamaon Parents were Virgil and Mary (Hicks) Marsh

Walter Virgil was the last of the Virgil and Mary Marsh children. He is recorded as enlisting in theArmy in Evansville for World War II on 18 Jan 1943 into the “Branch Immaterial”–Warrant Officers,USA as a private. (Was there such a branch or should the title have been “Branch Materiel”?) Whenhe enlisted, his occupation was sales clerk. It may have been his tour of duty that placed him inAlabama where he met his future wife Marjorie because one year later they were married in LeeCounty. After the war, Walter took up residence in Opelika permanently and became a game warden. His obituary says he had worked for the Opelika Police Department for 30 years. I presume he isburied in Alabama.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -I Married Marjorie H Lominack, 15 Jun 1944, Lee Co., AL• Born (date unsure–see note)• Died (date unknown–see note)

2. (M) Kennison Marsh• Born 11 Feb 1948• Died

3. (M) Glenn Marsh• Born 12 Jan 1951• Died

Data on Marjorie has been difficult to track down. The marriage date does seem secure since thedate is listed under both Marjorie H Lominack and Walter V Marsh in Lee County, Alabama. Thelistings gave two reference numbers, 36 and 17648, possibly Book and Certificate numbers.

I did find a Social Security Death Index on www.ancestry.com for one Marjorie Marsh in Alabamawith the dates “Born 01 May 1927, died Nov 1978”. The birth date is certainly reasonable but the

33

death date is before Walter’s and Walt’s obituary says he was survived by his wife and children. Ialso heard that Marjorie remarried after Walter died, but I have no information on that.

A deceased cousin of mine had done some Marsh genealogy back in the early 1960s and her husbandsent me a copy of one page containing the following:“Marjarie Elizabeth (Hanners) Marsh, born Lee County, Ala. on 25 Feb 1919.Children: 1.) Bobby Weida Lominack (Marjarie’s first child by her first husband who died), bornNewberry County, So. Carolina on 06 Nov 1943.”I have a picture of Marge and her baby dated 1945 (see photo section) which implies something iswrong with the above dates.

However, I also found the following on www.ancestry.com: There was a Marjorie E Hanners bornaround 1919 to Bascomb and Lela/Lula Hanners. In 1920, they lived in Grahams Store, Lee County,Alabama and in 1930, it was in Floyds Mill, Lee County. Marjorie E Hanners was married in LeeCo., Ala. on Jan 1939, no spouse name or book information given.

At the same time, there did exist a Lominack family in Newberry County, South Carolina and therewas a Robert G Lominack who died in Alabama on 20 Apr 1943 at the age of 29, so it is possibleMarge really had been married before, but the dates still don’t add up unless the picture was takenaround the same time Walt and Marge were married and was misdated.

The only clue I have linking Samantha to Mattie is marriage supplement [H3:12] which lists Mattieas age 23 and her father as Chas. This is a little weak, however. An actual inspection of the marriagerecord or supplement should provide a more definitive answer (see Appendix C).

Son Myrel is listed in the 1900 census as Myrel Marsh, a stepson of John Nelson but in the 1920census, he is listed as Myrl Nelson.

In 1920 and 1930, John and Mattie were found in Poplar Bluff (Butler County), Missouri.

Better sit down for this one because it took a while to piece this story together.

42 CHAPTER 5. THE CHARLES ROSS MARSH LINEAGE

The cast of players are:1) Bertha Emma Fish – b: Dec 1879. Daughter of Isaac and Sarah Jane (Davis) Fish.2) Horace Greely Wilhite – b: Jun 1873. Son of Joseph and Mary “Molly” (Coker) Wilhite.3) George Byrd – b: 1876. Son of Samuel and Rebecca (Goldman or Golden) Byrd.Bertha was from the Decker area of southern Knox County and the men from Patoka.

Story: Bertha E Fish marries Horace G Wilhite in Gibson County on 13 Jul 1896 (Books [9:149]and [H2:10]). Bertha lists “Davis” as her mother’s maiden name. They had two children neither ofwhich lived to 1900 when the census was taken. The census indicates they were still married at thetime but were living separately. I presume a divorce had been in progress because within a year,Bertha married George Byrd on 03 Apr 1901 under the name “Emma B Fish” and gave her mother’sname as “Lewis” (Knox Co. Books [C15:412] and [H46:37]).

George and Bertha—er, I mean George and Emma—had one son, Jerauld (later Gerald) Byrd about1905. By 1910, they were divorced with Bertha/Emma having custody of Jerauld. The 1910 censusshows Bertha as having had a total of five children with only one living.

Along comes Otto Marsh. The 1930 census says Otto first got married when he was 38 and thathe was 50 years old in 1930. That means Otto and Bertha must have married around 1917–1918.According to the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Otto and Bertha produced two children, son CharlesMaxin around 1914 (ages 6 and 15) and daughter Helen in 1918 (ages 2 and 12). I could not finda marriage record under the name Otto Marsh, but I DID find one in Knox County for “Arthur”Marsh and Emma B “Bird” for the date 06 Jan 1917 (Book [C27:449]). I am assuming this is Otto’smarriage record.

In 1942, Otto Marsh filled out a World War II registration card indicating he was living with HelenL Marsh in Vincennes which implies Bertha had died by then and Helen was still single.

Curtis Clark’s mother was Sarah E (Ratliff?).

There is a 1910 census showing a Villa Whitney from Indiana, age 26, single, working as a waitressat a hotel in Bartlesville Oklahoma. If this is our Villa, then Mildred M Clark must have been CurtisClark’s daughter from a previous marriage. In 1920, Villa’s mother Rilla was widowed and livingwith Curtis and Villa in Cowley County, Kansas. Curtis Clark was a driller on the oil fields, so hemust have traveled a good amount. In 1930, Melvilla was widowed and living with Mildred and herfamily in Baird City, Callahan County, Texas. Rilla Whitney was no longer listed.

Waldo Moutray was an oil well contractor. His parents were Eugene Moutray and Maud Burns ofGarfield County, Oklahoma.

for Roswell Stone ([H8:135]) which listed the bride as Anna Marsh, Hugh her father, Mary Riddleher mother, and 55 her age. The primary record gave her name as Anna Lockhart which allowedme to backtrack and locate a previous husband, William Lockhart.

William Lockhart’s parents were Levi and Martha (Shradley) Lockhart from Lockhart Township,Pike County.

Roswell Stone’s parents were James B Stone and Rowena Wilder from Dubois County. Roswell hadbeen married once before to a Luticia McReynolds (01 Nov 1866, Pike County [Book 5:12]).

I also found a record for a marriage between an Anna Lockhart and a Thomas Norrick on 13 Jul 1911(Gibson Co. Book [12:345]), but I have no evidence this is the same Anna Lockhart. Thomas’ firstwife was Emaline Spraggins. They were married on 13 Apr 1889 in Pike Co. (Book [8:256]).

Asa and William Briant were brothers and their wives, Eleanor and Lucretia Bennett, were firstcousins.

Several sources list Asa’s death year as 1856, but the death record clearly states 1857. Note also thatPatsy Briant’s name follows Asa’s in the record indicating she died the same year. At first, the causeof death was listed as “flux”, but those entries were crossed out and replaced with “dysentery”.

On a similar note, there is a Patsy Bryant buried at Carson Cemetery, Hartford, KY with the dates“Born 15 Mar 1812 — Died 31 Jul 1856”. If her birth year was misread by the headstone carvers, then this could be our Patsy listed above (carved 1812 in place of 1842). The headstone entries canbe found on website www.findagrave.com.

Frances’ birth year is uncertain. Most censuses place it in 1858, the 1900 census gives it as 1857,but her cemetery record gives it as 1856. The latter year 1858 is probably correct considering herparents were married in Mar 1857.

Winfield died in 1916 because of an accident. He had been sexton at the Logan Cemetery for sixteenyears when he was injured by a “runaway” at the cemetery (The Hospers Tribune newspaper, nodate).

8. (M) Charles Murphy• Born 1877, Indiana• Died 29 Jan 1890, 14 yrs old, Gibson Co., IN [Book H32:21]

Hugh Murphy’s headstone reads “Father Hugh Murphy”, Ann’s headstone reads “Mother Ann Mur-phy”, and a third headstone reads “Brother James Murphy”, but no dates are given. Apparently oneof the above children placed these three headstones, but who and when? (The identical headstoneslook rather recent.)

The 1880 census says Ann had a brother-in-law living with her named John Murphy, age 36, workingat the Patoka distillery. This is probably the same John Murphy who was buried at Saints Peter andPaul Cemetery along with Hugh, Ann, and James. His headstone gives a birth date of 16 Nov 1842and a death date of 15 Aug 1923.

Hugh and Ann were married in Floyd County, Indiana which is across the Ohio River from Louisvillewhere there would have been doctors and good medical facilities. That might explain why the firsttwo children were born in Kentucky.

In 1900, Ann was listed as having had ten children of which only seven were still living.

Lizzie Landers was born in Feb 1882. Her first marriage was to John Hasse on 07 Oct 1900 (GibsonCo. Book [10:145]). They had nine children together before she married Frank Murphy.

Thomas, still single, and his widowed sister Mary Slater were living together in Patoka in 1930.
