We would like to thank everyone here for taking the 5me to a7end Qudwa’s first workshop – Qudwa’s workshops will be formulated around building and enhancing Skills required to succeed in the workplace or anywhere else with people around. I am not going to men5on the skills we focus on now, I will leave that to the end of the workshop to see if we have reached our goal. Today we are going to have a challenge, and as you have already guessed there will be a marshmallow involved, this challenge has been conducted by tens of thousands of people in every con5nent, from the CFOs of the Fortune 50 to Students at all levels. The lessons learned are universal. Created by Tom Wujec & Peter Skillman -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ 100 people – 25 tables 4 people / table 10 facilitators – 2-‐3 tables / facilitator

Build the Tallest Freestanding Structure: The winning team is the one that has the tallest structure measured from the table top surface to the top of the marshmallow. That means the structure cannot be suspended from a higher structure, like a chair, ceiling or chandelier. ✦The En5re Marshmallow Must Be on Top: The en5re marshmallow needs to be on the top of the structure. CuWng or ea5ng part of the marshmallow disqualifies the team. ✦Use as Much or as Li7le of the Kit: The team can use as many or as few of the 20 spagheW s5cks as they prefer, as much or as li7le of the string or tape. The team cannot use the paper bag as part of their structure. ✦Break up the SpagheW, String or Tape: Teams are free to break the spagheW, cut up the tape and string to create new structures. ✦The Challenge Lasts 18 minutes: Teams cannot hold on to the structure when the 5me runs out. Those touching or suppor5ng the structure at the end of the exercise will be disqualified. ✦If anyone has any ques5ons before star5ng, please ask.

The lesson in the marshmallow challenge is that we need to iden5fy the assump5ons in our project -‐ the real customer needs, the cost of the product, the dura5on of the service -‐ and test them early and oden. That’s the mechanism that leads to effec5ve innova5on. What Leads to Effective Innovation Generally – women will have different assump5ons working in an environment where inter-‐gender communica5on does not come naturally – do not assume. Do Not make assump5ons, and Do discuss and clarify your objec5ves and deliverables. You cannot work on a project without knowing its deliverables. A key take away today is the importance of communica5on with ‘customers’ & ‘team members’. Redefine your objec5ves, take a step back and see where you stand in the big picture.

Day to day work may appear different but the essence of the idea is the same, your work is a series of projects with constraints and deliverables that require your a7en5on and require you to put in your best
