college. T h ere seems to be some unknown element

which some seem to possess, or have discovered.

In your youth  you feared things which you later

came to recognize as harmless and really useful. In your days of developing observation, you were

puzzled by th e un kn o wn elements in life. It seemed toyou th at there were more elements of the unkno wn thanof the known.

It is always the unknown in every day’s activitiesth at causes us wo rry, concern, p erp lexity, and even suffering. In years since yo ur you th , you h ave become well

acquainted w ith things once unkno wn. T o day yo uknow them; you can see them, sense them,  prepare for

them; it is a po wer no one can take from you. But evennow, are you fully prepared to meet all of the obstaclesof life, to sweep them aside, or surmount them easily? If not, begin now to investigate further the still un-known elements of your existence—the mysteries t h a tmake for the inequalities between men.

Real knowledge by man about  man is, today, the

greatest power any man can possess.

T h e T lio ro ugh f are o f Life

Let us begin w ith existence as we kn ow it. Life is a

thoroughfare upon which we find ourselves travelers.Behind us is our immediate beginning— birth. It is a vast etern ity. A h ead of

us is still ano th er inev itab le vast eter n ity— death. It is a m ystery wh ich eith er

instills fear or is accepted with understanding—depending upon the experi

ences we have along this course of life.

W e d id n ot ask for this life, yet, wecould not have refused it . H ow , then,

E very in t e l li gen t t r ave le r knows f rom wh encehe came and w hi the r he goes. Th e span of li f e

can be so much more free of obstacles and en- jo ya b le , if al l o f it s p u rp o se s an d w ays are u n de rs tood and used .

shall we react to it—what shall we do with this period

of consciousness which the years afford us?

Many men and women resign themselves to the in-

fluences of th eir environ m ent. T h ey allo w them selves

to be drawn or impelled along this causeway of life. They are like balls of snow, rolling at a furious rate of speed do wn the side of a great m ou ntain. O ne mom entthey are free, out in the open, encountering few or noob stacles, and th ey are unco ncerned. T h e next mo mentthey have collided with unanticipated events and hap-penings. T h ey are at a loss to avoid th ese con dition s, or

to rise above them. T h us th ey travel thro ugh th e years, sometimes wondering if the vicissitudes of life, the bit'

terness, the pains, are worth the price, worth the occa-sional pleasures and snatches of peace of mind whichcome their way.

Certainly at some time you must have asked yourself

as you looked back upon your past activities and likewise con temp lated yo u r fut ur e: "Is this h aph azard ex

istence my destiny? W h y are we here?"  Also, is therea mother who has never gazed down on the innocent

babe nestled in h er arms, and wo nd ered: “ W h at doesthis span of existence h old for h im ?"

Is it not time that humanity ceases plunging into the

unknown along this thoroughfare of life, hoping tograsp the skirts of passing o p p o rtun ity? W o u ld life no tbe entirely different for you if you could control your

If you could form d esirab le h abits and b reak those not desired; if you could know how to see in theevents happening about you the trends of tomorrow, would you not be more assured and confident in thestrength of such kn ow ledge? D O E S F AT E C O N T R O L U S?

Do not be deceived by some inadequate philosophy.Millions of humans try to excuse their perplexity orhelplessness during this earthly span by saying to themselves and others that they are dependent upon thedecrees of fate. These fatalists proclaim that infinitepowers have pre-destined their every act, and it is use

less for them to in terven e. T h e fatalist, by such a belief, damns his divine heritage, his power to reason, his willand facu lty of choice. W h y were these and oth er facu lties, which so few men understand and use, given tous, if we are mere pupp ets? W h y do we possess th epo wer of th o ught and the attrib ute of decision — if every human act and step along this span of life hasbeen ordained for us in advance?

T h ink a mo ment! Is it even reason able th at weshould believe that a Supreme Being or God has conceived a complete plan for the universe—even for thislife—and yet man must blunder on like a moth attracted b y the ligh t? D oes it seem p art of an int elligen tdesign that man must stumble through a mortal existence, make mistakes, and learn through suffering alone?Does it seem just that man must search for truth, happiness, and peace of mind—like hunting for a needle

in a haystack—and hope to find it before the end of the span, or death? D oes anyon e com pliment the D ivine  Intelligence b y such reason ing? T h is is no t a religious question; it is a philosophical question, one that

concerns you and your life.

Success in life means mastership, and mastershipmeans utilizing every inner force and power of the being, as well as every outer force. M an ’s creat ive abilities

do not rest in the muscular strength of his body, nor his

fertile im agination . H e must be able to bring his m entalimagining into m aterial expression d aily, h o urly. T o dothis, he must be able to use other faculties than simple

visualization . Fu rtherm o re, he must use these po wersaccording to the purpose for which they were intended.

A Bluep r in t of Livin g

Since a Suprem e or D ivin e In telligence created anorderly universe, with its majestic and immutable laws, above and below, then there also exists for man, as part

of th is great C osm ic scheme, a true p urpose in life. Byknowing this purpose, by relating it to his existenceeach d ay, m an discovers him self. H e becomes th e righ tful master of his dominion—this world—and relegatessuffering, misery, and ignorance to their proper places—and apart from himself.

Certainly you have instinctively felt that there wasmore to life than you h ave alread y experienced. Let

us assure you that there is a true blueprint of liviiig. Even those occurrences which have been painful to you

have a place, a useful cause—when you know and understand them. T ho se wh o con tin uo usly suffer m isfortunes, and whose lives are not as progressive or inspir

ing as they would want them, are living outside of theCosmic pattern.

Did you ever stop to think why you do the thingsyo u do? Is it n ot often because you h ad no alter n ative—because there seemed nothing else to do, and you

took the ch ance that i tmight turn out for thebest? M illio n s of h umans throughout thecivilized world todaylive just like that, taking b lind chan ces —

Life is wh at you m ake it . Anintel l igent plan wel l di rected canprov ide personal power and a t t a i n me n t .

and these same millions often wonder, therefore, if thelife they live is really worth while.

C R E AT I VE F O R CE S W I T H I N YO U

W ith in m an there are con structive creative forcesalways at work and always attuned with the most perfect wisdom o f the im m ortal self. T hese forces m ust rep air th e dam age don e to th e bo dy, overcome th e strain sand stresses upo n th e m ental system, and guide th e in decision o f m an’s mind in the right direction . From thenatural forces operating throughout the universe, certain harmonic vibrations, ethereal energies, and vitaliz

ing powers contact man’s being and change the nature

of his physical body, or react upon his mental efficiency. Thus man is hourly a complex being, influenced byforces and potent principles of a serious and importantnature.

Man must understand these things, if he is to becomea success in life an d use his freedom to act  in a wise manner. M an must either live com pletely in h arm o ny withthe forces in and around him, or at v ariance w ith them. There is no middle course.

An understanding of the natural, spiritual, andm ental laws is th e o n ly means of m astership of life. For

hundreds of years, the Rosicrucians have been able toprove this to men and women through their remarkableteachings.

What t h i s blueprint of life, this plan for mastery is,

and h ow it m ay be ob tained , w ill now be revealed to you .

T h e G olden SecretV A V

S e v e r a l   thousand years ago, in ancient Egypt, man^ first began h is in vestigatio n of those m ysteries

wh ich surround ed him. T h e first and most stupendou s

discovery he made was the duality of self. He learnedthat in addition to his physical body, with its limbsand organs, there was some ethereal nature or element of his being. M an then b ecame, for th e first

time, truly self-conscious, or rather conscious of  the

great inner self .

Whence came this ethereal essence of his nature or

self ? It could no t be affected b y th at wh ich p ainedthe bo dy— b y h eat, cold, or hun ger. It could be active,

thi7i\ and conceive, while the body was at rest or evenasleep. M o reo ver, w h at wo uld h appen to it at th e end

of life—o r death ? W as it in destru ctib le? D id it survive? W ith such question s as these con foun ding the

minds of the early Egyptians, and yet mtriguing them,

man began a search that has never ceased, on the partof intelligent men and women everywhere.

In the common phenomena of everyday life—in an

observation of the coming and going of the seasons,in the ebb and flow of the tides, and the waxing and N o b u s i n e s s , no

current rebirth in the spring, they found theresurrection of nature— a strange im m ortality

in living things. In the regular jo ur n ey of  thesilvery specks or p lanets, and th e app aren t p athof the sun across the heavens, men discernedthe infallibility of nature, and the suggestionof a great universal order pervading all things. All of this heightened their inquisitiveness.

W h at w as man ’s relation to the heavensand th e earth ? D id these forces affect his d aily

affairs and th e cycle of his existen ce? T hesefurther questions, like great spades, served

man to dig beneath the surface of his own consciousness. Since as rem ote a period as 5000 B. C ., certain

men and women have sincerely, and without fear orprejudice, probed not alone into the earth or scanned

the heavens above, but have investigated the mysteriesof their minds an d selves. T h ey formed themselves intoarcane o r m ystery schools for the acquisition and study

of such kn ow ledge— and for th e m astery of life.Much of the startling wisdom they acquired was re'

duced by them to writing on stone tablets and papyrusrolls—but the greatest portion was secretly conveyedfrom one to ano ther b y word of m onth. Sir E. A. W allisBudge, renowned Egyptologist, in one of his learned

works, relates with respect to these mystery schools:

"There must have been a progressive development inthe 'mysteries' and it seems as if some of them were en-

tirely un known under the old kingdom . It is imp ossibleto do ub t th at th ere were "m ysteries’ in th e E gyp tianrites, and this being so, it is impossible to think that thehighest order of the Kheri Hebs (Masters) did not pos-sess esoteric (inner) knowledge which they guardedwith the greatest care. to en large or dim in ish its scope as circum stances m ade it

necessary. It is, th erefo re, absurd to expect to find inEgyptian papyri, descriptions of the secrets, which

formed the esoteric kn ow ledge of the K heri H ebs.^

The disclosures of these ancient investigators areastoun ding, even to th e scientific wo rld to day. T h eeternal truth s th ey un veiled— the facts, the h itherto m v

known laws of nature—made them "masters” of fear,

and liberated them from the undependable elements of so-called chan ce and luck. W h at t h ey wer e able to ac'complish in their lives, to do for friends and members

of their families, how they were able to utilize nature’s

forces to do th eir b idd in g, were th e cause of the legends

that have come down to us today about the ancient  miracle workers. T o t he uninitiated, to th ose still steepedin ign oran ce, and who h ave dw elt in darkn ess and do ub t,these sages and m ystics seemed to be perform ing m iracles.

To those of the mystery schools who knew, these

demonstrations were not magical processes, but ratherthe simple application of a knowledge b y which man can

direct the laws of nature and the faculties of his own

being. W ith th e same und erstanding, wh at they did, you can do.
