'T 'H IR T Y years ago, a young d octor sat by a desper

ately ill baby on her death bed. Th e p arents w ere

frantically begging for help, every treatment failing to

aid. Th e p arents became griefstricken to th e point of

death. I am the doctor wh o had th at exp erience.”

“This experience created a desire in my mind toknow why people are born and why Nature allows

such a great difference between members of the human

race. Th e hu nger for knowled ge d rove me to labora

tories and libraries for th e an swer— bu t I am still search

ing and determined to know.”

Th ere are the w ords of a prom inent physician. Un

intentionally he has spoken for millions of men and

women who today harbor the same thoughts.

This inequality of man is apparent to most of us.

You know persons who are radiant with health from

birth, and seemingly imm un e to disease. You know

others whose lives are preyed upon by numerous ail-

ments which rob them not only of enjoyments but of

simple comforts. A lso there are those men and women

wh ose every plan becom es a successfu l ven tu re. Each

enterprise they en ter turn s into a golden op portu nity—

as if they had the touch of the fabled King Midas.

Aroun d them, however, a mu ltitude of un fortun ate be-

ings live and struggle.

W h a t m akes one man more successful than another?

Is it train ing in  jus t one line1 You know th at is no t true!

who has been taught nothing more than buying and

selling. You can n ot make a good ph ysician out of a

In your youth  y ou feared things which you later

came to recognize as harmless and really useful. In your days of developing observation, you were

puzzled by the u nkn ow n elemen ts in life. It seemed to

you that there were more elements of the unknown

than of the known.

It is always the unknown in every day’s activities

that causes us worry, concern, perplexity, and even suf

fering. In years since you r youth , you h ave become

well acqu ainted w ith things once unknow n. Tod ay you \ now them; you can see them, sense them,  prep are for

them; it is a pow er no one can take from you. Bu t even

now , are you fu lly p repared to meet all of the obstacles

of life, to sweep them aside, or surmount them easily?

If not, begin now to investigate further the still un-

known elements of your existence—the mysteries that

make for the inequalities between men.

Real knowledge by man about  man is, today, the

greatest power any man can possess.

Th e Tho r ou gh fa r e o f L ife

Let us begin w ith existence as we know it. Life is a

thoroughfare upon which we find ourselves travelers.

Behind us is our immediate beginning

— birth. It is a vast eternity. Ah ead of

us is still another inevitable vast eterni-

ty— death. It is a my stery wh ich either

instills fear or is accepted with under-

standing—depending upon the experi-

ences we h ave along th is course o f life.

W e did not ask for this life; yet, we

could not have refused it. H ow , then,

Every in te l l igent t rave le r knows f rom whence

he came and w hi ther he goes . Th e span o f l i fe

can be so much more free of obstacles and en- jo ya b le , if al l o f it s p u rp os es and w ays are u n -

ders tood and used.

shall we react to it—what shall we do with this period

of consciousness which the years afford us?

Many men and women resign themselves to the in'

fluences of th eir env ironm ent. Th ey allow themselves

to be drawn or impelled along this causeway of life. They are like balls of snow, rolling at a furious rate of

speed down th e side of a great moun tain. O n e moment

they are free, out in the open, encountering few or no

obstacles, and they are un concerned. Th e next moment

they have collided with unanticipated events and hap'

penings. Th ey are at a loss to avoid these cond itions,

or to rise above them. Thu s they travel throug h the

years, sometimes wondering if the vicissitudes of life,

the bitterness, the pains, are worth the price, worth theoccasional pleasures and snatches of peace of mind

which come their way.

W H Y AR E W E H ER E?

Certa inly at some time you mu st hav e asked you rself

as you looked back upon your past activities and like'

wise contemplated your future: “Is this haphazard ex

istence my destiny? W h y are w e here?” Also, is therea mother who has never gazed down on the innocent

babe nestled in her arms, and wond ered : “ W h a t does

this span of existence hold for him?”

Is it not time that humanity ceases plunging into t he

unknown along this thoroughfare of life, hoping to

grasp the skirts of passing opp ortu nity? W ou ld life not

be entirely different for you if you could control your

moods? If you could form d esirable ha bits and break those not desired; if you could know how to see in the

events happening about you the trends of tomorrow,

would you not be more assured and confident in the

strength of such knowledge? If you kn ew how to de

velop your will power sufficiently to meet the demands

upon you, and to make the right decision, would not

many of your troubles, the result of indecision, disap-

pear? If you could reach into a depend able source and

produce helpful, constructive, intelligent ideas at a time

when an important thought, a useful plan, meant the

difference between discouragement and achievement,

wou ld you not feel equal to any circu m stance? Cer

tainly such a life would be far superior to the one you

now know.

D O E S F A T E C O N T R O L U S ?

Do not be deceived by some inadequate philosophy.

Millions of humans try to excuse their perplexity or

helplessness during this earthly span by saying to them-

selves and others that they are dependent upon the

decrees of fate. These fatalists proclaim that infinite

powers have predestined their every act, and it is use-

less for them to intervene. Th e fatalist, by such a belief, damns his divine heritage, his power to reason, his will

and facu lty of choice. W h y w ere these and oth er facul-

ties, which so few men understand and use, given to

us, if w e are mere pu pp ets? W h y d o w e possess the

power of thought and the attribute of decision—if

every human act and step along this span of life has

been ordained for us in advance?

Th ink a mom ent! Is it even reasonable th at weshould believe that a Supreme Being or God has con-

ceived a complete plan for the universe—even for this

life—and yet man must blunder on like a moth at-

tracted by th e light? Does it seem part of an intelligent

design that man must stumble through a mortal exist-

ence, make mistakes, and learn through suffering alone?

Does it seem just that man must search for truth, hap-

piness, and peace of mind—like hunting for a needle

in a haystack— and hop e to find it before the end of the span, or death? Does anyone comp lim ent the D i-

vine  Int el ligence by such reasoning? Th is is no t a re-

ligious question; it is a philosophical question, one that

concerns you and your life.

Success in life means mastership, and mastership

means utilizing every inner force and power of the be-

ing, as well as every outer force. Man’s creative abilities

do not rest in the muscular strength of his body, nor his

fertile imagination. H e must be able to bring his mental

imagining into material expression daily, hou rly. To do

this, he must be able to use other faculties than simple

visualization. Fur therm ore, he mu st use these powersaccording to the purpose for which they were intended.

A Blu ep r in t o f L iv in g

Since a Supreme or Divine Intelligence created an

orderly universe, with its majestic and immutable laws.

above and below , then there also exists for man, as part

of this great Cosm ic schem e, a tru e purpose in life. Byknowing this purpose, by relating it to his existence

each day, man d iscovers himself. H e becomes th e right'

ful master of his dominion—this world—and relegates

suffering, misery, and ignorance to their proper places

—and ap ar t from himself.

Certainly you have instinctively felt that there was

more to life than you h ave already experienced. Let

us assure you that there is a true blueprint of living.

Even those occu rrences w hich ha ve been p ainful to youhave a place, a useful cause—when you know and un-

derstand them. Tho se wh o continu ou sly suffer misfor

tunes, and whose lives are not as progressive or inspir

mg as they would want them, are living outside of the

Cosmic pattern.

Did you ever stop to think why you do the things

you do? Is it no t often because you h ad n o alterna

tive—because there seemed nothing else to do, and you

took the chance tha t it

might turn out for the

best? Millions of hu -

mans throughout the

civilized world today

live just like that, tak-

ing blind chances —

Life is what you make it. Anintelligent plan well directed can

provide personal power and at 't a inment .

True happiness con -sis ts not in the kn ow l-

edge of good things,

but in good life; not inunders tanding but in

l iving understandingly.N e i t h e r is it g rea tlearning but good wil lthat joins men to God.

and these same millions often wonder, therefore, if the

life they live is really worth while.

C R E A T I V E F O R C E S W I T H I N Y O U

Within man there are constructive creative forces

always at work and always attuned with the most per'feet wisdom o f th e immortal self. Th ese forces mu st re'

pair the d amage done to the body, overcom e th e strains

and stresses up on th e mental system, and guide the ind e-

cision of m an’s mind in the right d irection. From the

natural forces operating throughout the universe, cer

tain harmonic vibrations, ethereal energies, and vitali^

ing powers contact man’s being and change the nature

of his physical body , or rea ct upon his m ental efficiency.

Thus man is hourly a complex being, influenced by

forces and potent principles of a serious and important

nature.

Man must understand these things, if he is to become

a success in life and use his  freed om to act  in a wise

manner. M an mu st either live com pletely in harm ony

with the forces in and around him, or at variance with

them. Th er e is no middle course.

An understanding of the natural, spiritual, and men'

tal laws is th e only means of mastership of life. For

hundreds of years, the Rosicrucians have been able to

prove this to men and women th rough their rem arkable

teachings.

W h a t it is, this blueprint of life, this plan for mastery,

and how it may be obtained , will now be revealed to you.

T here are n one so blind

Th e Golcl en SecretV A V

Se v e r a l thousand years ago, in ancient Egypt, man

first began his investigation of those mysteries

w hich surround ed him. Th e first and most stup endous

discovery he made was the duality of self. H e learnedthat in addition to his physical body, with its limbs

and organs, there was some ethereal nature or element

of his being. M an then became, for th e first time, tru ly

selfconscious, or rather conscious of  the greater inner

self.

Whence came this ethereal essence of his nature or

self? It could not be affected by that which pained

the body— by heat, cold, or hu nger. It could be active,

thin\ and conceiv e, while the body was at rest or evenasleep. Mor eover, wh at would hap pen to it at the end

of life—or death? W a s it ind estructible? Did it sur-

vive? W ith such qu estions as these confoun d ing the

minds of the early Egyptians, and yet intriguing them,

man began a search that has never ceased, on the part

of intelligent men and women everywhere.

In the common phenomena of everyday life—in an

observation of the coming and going of the seasons,

in the ebb and flow of the tides, and the waxing and

in living things. In the regu lar jou rn ey of the

silvery specks or planets, and th e ap paren t path

the infallibility of nature, and the suggestionof a great universal order pervading all things.

All of this heightened their inquisitiveness.

and w omen have sincerely, and without fear or prej-

udice, probed not alone into the earth or scanned the

heavens above, but have investigated the mysteries of

their minds and selves. They formed themselves into

arcane or mystery schools for the acquisition and study

of such knowledge—and for the mastery of life.

He who knows mostgrieves most for wastedtime.—  D an t e. (A Rosi '

c ruc ian . )

Much of the startling wisdom they acquired was re-

duced by them to w riting on stone tablets and p apyrus

rolls—but the greatest portion was secretly conveyed

from one to an other by w ord of mouth. Sir E. A . W allis

Budge, renowned Egyptologist, in one of his learned

works, relates with respect to these mystery schools:

“There must have been a progressive development in

the 'm ysteries’ and it seems as if some of them w ere en -tirely u nkn ow n under the old kingdom . It is impossible

to dou bt th at th ere w ere "mysteries’ in the Egyptian

rites, and this being so, it is impossible to think that the

highest order of the KheriHebs (Masters) did not pos-

sess esoteric (inner) knowledge which they guarded

w ith the greatest care. Each, if I read the evid ence cor-

rectly, possessed a 'gnosis,’ a 'sup erior ity of know ledge’

which they never put into writing, and so were enabled

to enlarge or diminish its scope as circumstances made

it necessary. It is, th erefore , absurd to exp ect to find

in Egyptian papyri, descriptions of the secrets which

formed the esoteric knowledge of the KheriHebs.”

The disclosures of these ancient investigators are

astound ing, even to th e scient ific w orld today. Th e

eternal truths they unveiled—the facts, the hitherto un-

known laws of nature—made them “masters” of fear,

and liberated them from the undependable elements of

socalled chan ce and luck. W h a t th ey were able to ac-

complish in their lives, to do for friends and members

of their families, how they were able to utilize nature’s

forces to do their bidding, were the cause of the legends

that have come down to us today about the ancient

miracle w orkers. To the uninitiated, to those still steeped

in ignorance who w ere dwelling in d arkness and dou bt,

these sages and mystics seemed to be perform ing miracles.

To those of the mystery schools who knew, these

demonstrations were not magical processes, but rather

the simple application of a \ now ledge by which man

can direct the laws of nature and the faculties of his

own being. W ith the same und erstanding, w hat they

did,  y ou can do.

knowledge they had discovered, a menace to the ortho-

This amazing knowledge, which secret brotherhoods

have preserved, is available today to the seeker for per-

if you h ave an open mind. Its efficacy, its grea t power,

can be applied to the affairs of your life with startling

beneficial results.

St range Exper iences

Let us face facts. You r life is influenced b y man y

inexplicable things—phenomena, happenings, that you

sometimes can not qu ite explain or overcome. You may

call them uncanny. Perhap s you seek to pu sh them into

the background of you r consciousness. You may even

laugh abou t them to others. N everth eless, th ey are

often the direct or indirect factors in preventing you

from realizing some ideal, something you are seeking to

attain or accomplish, or from freeing you rself of w orry

and strife. H ave you , for examp le, had these strange ex-

periences? You hav e met persons for the first time wh o

have been presentable in appearance and in speech—

and yet immediately a wave of distrust and dislike for

them w ould sweep over you. W h y ? It is a manifes-

tation of the human aura—an invisible, magnetic radia-tion from the human body which we can detect, and

w hich eith er repels or a ttr acts— and it is scientifically

demonstrable. Th is eman ation also has a most p ractical

mystical pow er w hich was known to the stud ents of the

mystery schools, to the sages and adepts of yore, for

centuries.

Have you ever entered a room that greatly depressed

you? Th e room, perhaps in a home, hotel or office build

complish your best w ork or feel at ease. Do you know

that intense emotional outbursts, hatred, jealousy, and

anger, can and do affect material substances so that

every room in which they occur takes on a depressing

environment? These are not superstitions —  not sup-

positions—but the effects of littleknown natural laws

around us. Obv iously, und erstand ing them as do those

who have this esoteric knowledge, makes for the mas'

tery of such circumstances.

Man is often a s tranger to himself.

You have often had the experience of an intuitive

impression, a hunch or idea that was most enlightening

and th at seemed to come from n owh ere. Do you know

that intuition can provide an answer for almost every

question, a solution to many predicaments in which

you find yourself? Do you know th at it can aid you

in keeping the affairs of you r life in ord er? Do you

further know that this intuitive know ledge is part of

the great Cosmic intelligence which pervades the en-tire universe and every cell of your be-

ing, and that you can command it to

serve you — that you can draw upon

it as you w ill? W h ile millions of men

and women rely solely upon their brains

and the training which is given to them

through education, those who know the

esoteric wisdom wait for no hunches.

Th ey do n ot rely solely up on their ou terminds, but are able to draw upon the

w orkable laws of th e un iverse to those w ho master this

esoteric (inner) knowledge.

“W h y ,” you may ask, “is no t this knowledge gen'

erally and widely disseminated to mankind today?

W h y , if such illum inating truth s exist and a re avail'

able to man, is he deprived o f them ?” W e ha ve shown

what occurred in ancient times when the attempt was

made to teach man these simple tru ths. Th ey w ere

often sup pressed. Even tod ay, such knowledge cann ot

be tau gh t to everyone. T o th ose w ho are sincere in be t'

tering their own lives and advancing humanity, such

knowledge becomes a pow er for good. O n the other

hand, in the hands of the selfish and the bigoted, the

same knowledge might become a factor for misuse and

further persecution of the ignorant and the helpless.

But today, as we have said, it has survived because of

the careful guardianship of the brotherhood mystery

schools and societies.

The oldest of these humanitarian societies, world'wide in extent, and not a religious sect, is the Rosicru'

cians. It offers to you th is know ledge as old as time

for the fullness of life, free of any religious intolerance

or political or other prejudices or biases.

each day, and abides like an un seen guest in you r home,

your office, your places of meditation and pleasure.

life, from th e hum blest to the highest. You r nextd oor

The Rosicrucian traditions which have come down

in literary reference works, tell how the Order had its

birth as one of the mystery schools of secret wisdom

in ancient Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, or the reign

of Pha raoh Amen hotep IV, about 1350 B.C. Its  fas'

Its first memberstudents, it is further traditionally re-

imparted some of their wisdom to the builders of King

Solomon’s magnificent and symbolic temp le. Man y

tomes, rare books, and documents of several centuries

ago, reposing in the archives of the Rosicrucian Order

in this country and in Europe, describe its early spread

from the Orient to that continent in ancient times, and

the great influence it had upon the minds of men and

women thirsty for knowledge.

Some of the world’s most celebrated writers, such as

Marie Corelli, Dumas, and Lord BulwerLytton, have

w ritten of its history and its renowned accomplishments.

W ith the spread of printing in Europe d uring the

Fifteenth, Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, mimerous pamphlets appeared telling of the Rosicrucians

and their great work, notably the Fama Fraternitatis

 R osae Crucis in 1610, and the Confessio R C ■ ■ Fra'

ternitatis in 1615. Th e celebra ted Sir Fran cis Bacon is

conceded to have been their author. Th is sudden ap-

pearance of the literature of the Order caused many

writers and people of the day to believe, erroneously,

that the Rosicrucians had just come into existence as a

brotherhood during that period.

Since its earliest inception, the Rosicrucian Order

has kept free of religious sectarianism and affiliations,

desiring rather that each member follow the dictates of

his ow n con science in religious matters. It has neverbeen involved in political controversies, and has con-

sistently fought superstition, ignorance, and fear, as the

greatest enemies of man and the obstacles to his mastery

of life.

Today the Rosicrucian Order, as a vast, progressive

movement, has Lodges and fraternal Temples through-

ou t th e entire civilized world. It no longer has to be

secret in th e sense th at it conceals its iden tity. In beau -tiful Rosicrucian Park, San Jose, California, at the seat

of the International Jur isdiction of the Ord er for N orth,

The Rosicrucian monographs or lessons constitute

a fascina ting revelation of the m ysteries of life. How

ever, this great human engineering done by the Rosi

crucians, this building of lives, and this implanting in

them of the factors of confidence, success, and happi

ness is not  accom plished by any imp ersonal, correspond

encecourse method of merely extending knowledge to

the member. Each lesson also takes into consideration

the need for the quickening of the consciousness of the

individual. It seeks to aw aken his d orm ant talents and

to develop his personal powers rather than to cram hismind with cold and oftentimes useless facts.

The member, in the privacy of his own home, is made

to realise that he is comprehending and mastering his

Fees and Dues

Th e Ord er is strictly a brotherhood , operating in that

sense as do other fratern ities. Mem bersh ip in the Rosi

crucian Order carries with it the many benefits distinct

to all fraternities and many others unique. As in

fraternities, there are membership dues, payable month-

monthly dues of small amount are the donations on the

part of members to the general operating funds of the

Ord er, and take care of its extension expenses, its bu ild -

ing funds, national and international humanitarian ac-

tivities, and donations to many scientific expeditions

and methods of research and investigation.

In addition to these general activities of the Order,

the Rosicrucians conduct the courses mentioned on pre-

vious pages. Th ese courses of stud y are given  freel y and

without charge or fees of any kind to members of the

Ord er. Th erefore, we w ish you to keep in mind tha t

the study and instru ction w ork is a separ ate and d istinct

feature of the Order, not found in any other fraternal

organization, and for which, in reality, our members do

not pay.Th e Sup reme Coun cil has pu rposely mad e the “ Reg -

w ith application. M on th ly du es are tw o dollars and

seventyfive cents, payable on the first of each month.

These fees include all the benefits of t he O rder’s activ v
