That number is down six boys from the opening of practices a year ago. And it is way down from the 72 boys (15 seniors, 27 juniors, 30 sophomores) who reported to practice in August 2007. Those 2007 Panthers, you may recall, trounced DeLaSalle, 56-20, in Prep Bowl XXVI to cap off a 14-0 season. Numbers aside, head coach Scott Tschimperle said the 2012 Panthers had a “great first week,” undoubt- edly assisted by weather that seemed more suited for late Sep- tember than mid-August. GSL returns most of its good- hands people. Graduation, how- ever, made a heavy hit up front, particularly with the defensive line. Reed Dunbar and Brandon Ebert are a pair of two-year starters at the offensive ends. Tschimperle & Co. are looking for a third quality player at those spots, freeing Dun- bar to jump platoons and become a defensive end. In addition, Tschimperle said four boys — juniors Tyler Donnay, Zach Jones and Nolan Lepel, plus 12th-grader Eric Thalmann — are competing for the two guard spots on the offensive line. Donnay also is a candidate for a defensive tackle post — if he’s not needed by the offense. Fans are invited to get their first good look at the 2012 Panthers at GSL’s anual four-team scrimmage, Saturday morning, Aug. 25. start- ing at 9:30 a.m. *** Plays is under way in St. Cloud at the Class C state amateur base- ball tournament, where four Crow River Valley League teams quali- fied and only Young America failed to survive the first round. GSL is a member of the Wright County Confer- ence, which has added two members – Holy Family Catholic (in Victoria) and New London-Spicer — since the conclusion of the 2011 fall sports season. Colin Kerslake (boys’ soccer) is the lone new GSL fall-season head coach. Kerslake replaces Jeff Jen- son, who resigned the post after 2011. Panther openers were scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, with tennis matches against Jor- dan and Sibley East. There is more tennis Thursday morning, as well as the girls’ soccer team’s 1 p.m. opener with Willmar at Stevens Seminary Stadium. The final GSL team to open is the football squad, which plays host to Holy Family Catholic on Friday, Aug. 31 — 7 p.m. opening kickoff. Missing is returning letterwinner James Tichy. BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY 2011 in Review — GSL’s boys placed fourth in the Wright County Conference; then took third in Section 4 (Class A). Last year’s team won invitationals at Waconia, Dassel-Cokato and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. Jake Burr, a senior in 2011, was the team’s lone qualifier for the state meet. Burr earned a spot on the Class A all-state team by plac- ing 18th at the big run in North- field. Graduation Hit — Losing Burr (3rd WCC, 3rd Section 4) is a big loss. Three other seniors ran at sections; none cracking the top 40, however. Who Returns — Academic all-stater Jalen Metcalf, now a senior, placed 10th to earn an All- WCC medal last fall. Since the season-ending loss to New Ulm, 13 girls have been added to head coach Zach Otto-Fisher’s roster. Currently, GSL has 6 sen- iors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 6 ninth-graders, 10 eighth-graders, and 6 seventh-graders. With 36 girls, Otto-Fisher hopes to field three teams — one junior high team for Debbie Moosbrugger, one JV for Gary Carter and a varsity for himself. Who to Beat in WCC — Holy Family Catholic, Waconia and Orono should field teams of a high quality. GSL Outlook — Otto-Fisher said this team put in a lot of work over the summer — including club matches and captains’ practices. In the men’s division, Dan Johnson is the club champion, while Grant Zellmann placed second and Tom Eckhoff third. Low net score went to Jeff Schrader, with Tyler Condiff fin- ishing as runner-up. Diane Plocher is the club’s 2012 ladies’ champion; Marce Selvey plac- ing second. The senior champion is Keith Pe- ters, who beat out Curt Stuewe, Mike Savre and fourth-place Doug Lenzen. Top four among super seniors are Earl Harff, Roger Klaustermeier, Bill Curtis and Gary Ballard. Harff de- feated Klaustermeier by use of a scorecard playoff. Winner of the boys’ championship flight is Lou Iocona II. First flight went to Kellen Erpenbach and second flight to Dylan Schuth. Winner of the girls’ championship flight is Lily Vinkemeier. Practices for seven fall-season sports teamsat Glencoe-Silver Lake High School gotunder way Monday, Aug. 13.

GIRLS’ TENNIS2011 in Review — A

senior-laden GSL rosterproduced a 3-3 record inWright County Conferenceduals; won a Hutchinson In-vitational title for a secondstraight year, and lost (4-3)to eventual champion Prov-idence Academy in thesemifinals of the Section 5(Class A) team tournament.

All-WCC seniors MaryArnold and Jackie Stifterplayed as a doubles pair intheir second straight statemeet; and as before, wontheir first match anddropped their second.

Graduation Hit —Huge. Over a five-yearspan, the nine graduates ac-counted for 408 individualmatch wins. But as good asthey were on the court, theywere even better in theclassroom. Five were aca-demic all-staters. As agroup, the 2011 teamshowed a GPA above 3.84.

Who Returns — JuniorKelly Arnold and seniorsMichaela Boesche andKelly Beneke are long invarsity experience. Sopho-

more Callie Raduenz gotseveral good tastes last fall,while junior Laura Beckerand sophomore RachelRusten managed enough toearn letters.

Numbers — Down fromrecent years. Currently,GSL’s roster includes 2 sen-iors, 6 juniors, 11 sopho-mores, and one ninth-grader.Also, 10 in grades 7-8.

Who to Beat in WCC— Delano continues to looklike the conference power,with Orono, Annandale andMound-Westonka hoping tochallenge.

GSL Outlook — Forstarters, head coach RobbDeCorsey (20th season) islooking for a new lineup.

“It’s been basically thesame team for the last threeyears,” he says, noting thefun he hopes to have watch-ing a different team grow astennis players.

Kroells is named to MinnesotaLions Vision Foundation board

Diana Kroells of Hamburgwas recently named to serveon the board of directors ofthe Minnesota Lions VisionFoundation. Kroells, vicepresident of operations for theState Bank of Hamburg, is anactive member of the Ham-burg Lions Club and well-de-serving of this appointment.

Lions Clubs International isa service organization knownfor assisting the blind andhearing impaired.

As a Minnesota Lions Vi-sion Foundation board mem-ber, Kroells will overseeLions funding for the Min-nesota Lions Eye Bank; reporton eye bank activities to theLions of Minnesota; and pro-mote the eye bank to fellow

Lions club members and thegeneral public.

The eye bank, which recov-ers and distributes donatedeye tissue for use in sight-sav-ing corneal transplants, teach-ing and research, is part of theUniversity of Minnesota’sDepartment of Ophthalmol-ogy.

Since 1960, the MinnesotaLions Eye Bank has providedmore than 25,000 corneas fortransplant.

Kroells also will work toraise funds for other Min-nesota Lions Vision Founda-tion initiatives, such as theLions Children’s Eye Clinic,the Lions Macular Degenera-tion Center, used eyeglasscollection, and the Fund to

Prevent Blindness in Infantsand Children.

Minnesota Lions have nowdonated more than $18 mil-lion to the people of Min-nesota through sight-relatedendeavors at the University ofMinnesota and elsewhere.

Kroells will be busy in theupcoming year. In addition toher board duties and bankingwork, she serves as clerk ofWashington Lake Township,is on the Region 1 Board ofthe Council of CatholicWomen, and is a member ofthe St. Brendan’s ChurchGreen Isle Parish Council.She also enjoys spending timeflower gardening, reading,and taking care of her ninegrandchildren.

Sheriff’s Report

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 2:13a.m., the sheriff’s office assistedthe Hutchinson Police Depart-ment with a suspicious individualin the area of First Avenue South-west and Main Street South inHutchinson.

The sheriff’s office respondedto a report of a burglary at a busi-ness on 180th Street, south of Sil-ver Lake, Tuesday at 6:33 a.m.

A deputy responded to a reportof a theft from a residence onTagus Avenue, north of Hutchin-son, Tuesday at 6:33 a.m.

A gas drive-off from a Stewartbusiness was reported Tuesdayat 1:14 p.m.

At 4:38 p.m., Tuesday, thesheriff’s office and the BrowntonPolice Department responded toa domestic on Bowman Street inStewart. The situation was medi-ated.

The sheriff’s office assisted theGlencoe Police Department witha situation at a business on 11thStreet East in Glencoe Tuesdayat 6:17 p.m.

The sheriff’s office, LesterPrairie First Responders, LesterPrairie Police Department andRidgeview Ambulance respondedto a medical on 180th Street,west of Lester Prairie, Tuesday at7:56 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 1:15a.m., the sheriff’s office assistedthe Hutchinson Police Depart-ment with a possible fight on GlenStreet Northwest, Hutchinson.Everything was fine.

At 11:45 a.m., Wednesday, adeputy stopped a vehicle in thearea of Highway 22 and 155thStreet, southeast of Hutchinson,after receiving a complaint aboutdriving conduct. The deputy is-sued a verbal warning to thedriver.

The sheriff’s office received areport of garbage being dumpedin the area of Imperial Avenueand Highway 212, southwest ofGlencoe, Wednesday at 1:13p.m.

Property damage was reportedon Babcock Avenue, west of Win-sted, on Wednesday at 3:03 p.m.

A motor vehicle accident, withno injuries or damage, was re-ported in the area of 100th Streetand Highway 15, northwest ofBrownton, Wednesday at 5:39p.m.

The sheriff’s office assisted theHutchinson Police Departmentwith a medical on Carolina Av-enue Northwest in Hutchinson,Wednesday at 7:58 p.m.

Wednesday, at 8:05 p.m., adeputy spoke with an individualwho had swerved to miss an ani-mal and damaged her vehicleand a mailbox on Bell Avenue,northwest of Plato. The situationwas worked out between theowner and the driver.

On Thursday, Aug. 16, at 12:15a.m., the sheriff’s office assistedthe Hutchinson Police Depart-ment with a report of a theft of avehicle from an address on Cen-tury Avenue Southwest inHutchinson.

The sheriff’s office received areport of a vehicle swerving andalmost hitting another vehicle onHighway 212, just outside ofGlencoe, at 12:54 p.m. The vehi-cle turned south on Dairy Avenueand Sibley County was notified.

At 3:36 p.m., Friday, the sher-iff’s office assisted the GlencoePolice Department with an acci-dent at the intersection of Chan-dler Avenue North and 13thStreet in Glencoe. There were noinjuries.

Friday, at 6:22 p.m., the sher-iff’s office assisted the Hutchin-son Police Department with awarrant arrest at the McLeodCounty Fairgrounds in Hutchin-son.

Friday, at 7:38 p.m., the sher-iff’s office assisted the MinnesotaState Patrol with a two-vehicleaccident at the intersection ofHighway 15 and North High Drivein Hutchinson. There were no in-juries.

The sheriff’s office received anoise complaint of gunfire at aresidence on Castle Circle, north-west of Lester Prairie, Friday at8:11 p.m. A deputy spoke with theindividuals, who were targetshooting, and advised them of thecomplaint.

At 2:07 a.m., Saturday, thesheriff’s office responded to a re-port of a female who was possiblymissing in the Lester Prairie area.The female returned home.

The sheriff’s office assisted theHutchinson Police Departmentwith a two-vehicle accident in thearea of Highway 15 and DenverAvenue Southwest in Hutchinson,Saturday at 9:01 a.m. There wereno injuries.

The sheriff’s office received areport of garbage dumped on theside of the road on Flower Road,northeast of Silver Lake, at 10:03a.m. Saturday.

At 12:46 p.m., Saturday, thesheriff’s office assisted theRenville County Sheriff’s Officewith a gas drive-off that occurredin Hector. A deputy stopped thevehicle on Highway 212 andspoke to the driver, who con-tacted the gas station and workedout a resolution.

Saturday, at 4:25 p.m., thesheriff’s office received a callabout an unattended brush fire inthe ditch in the area of Highway212 and Nature Avenue, east ofBrownton. A deputy found the fire,which was almost out. TheBrownton Fire Department alsoresponded.

A deputy responded to a reportof a male walking along Highway15, south of Highway 212, at 9:33p.m. Saturday. He was taken toWinthrop.

Saturday, at 9:41 p.m., thesheriff’s office received a call of alarge fire on Babcock Avenue,south of Winsted. A deputychecked the area and advised theresident that fires need to becalled in to the sheriff’s office.

At 9:21 p.m., Saturday, thesheriff’s office assisted theHutchinson Police Departmentwith the recovery of a stolen ve-hicle in the area of Main StreetNorth and Fifth Avenue Northeastin Hutchinson.

A deputy responded to a med-ical on Bergen Road, south ofLester Prairie, Saturday at 10:04p.m. The issue was resolved be-fore the Lester Prairie First Re-sponders got on scene. Thedeputy continued to the house;everything was fine.

Two individuals were discov-ered sitting on the bridge on Bab-cock Avenue near 180th Street,south of Lester Prairie, at 10:11p.m., Saturday. The deputy askedthe individuals to move.

Sunday, at 1:08 a.m., the sher-iff’s office assisted the Silver LakePolice Department with a trafficstop in the area of Highway 7 andLane Avenue in Silver Lake.

On Sunday, at 3:27 a.m., thesheriff’s office assisted the Glen-coe Police Department with anoise complaint on Newton Av-enue in Glencoe.

A theft was reported on VistaRoad, north of Hutchinson, Sun-day at 9 a.m. The matter remainsunder investigation.

A driving complaint was re-ceived Sunday at 9:58 a.m., in-volving a vehicle in the area ofHighway 15 and Highway 212,west of Brownton. A deputy spoketo the driver about his conduct.

Another driving complaint wasreceived at 2:35 p.m., Sunday, in-volving a vehicle on Highway212, east of Glencoe. As a result,a deputy arrested Jacob LukeBecker, 25, of Norwood YoungAmerica, for driving after revoca-tion and false identification, andtook him to the McLeod CountyJail in Glencoe.

A burglary at a residence on100th Street, southwest of Plato,was reported Sunday at 3:57 p.m.The investigation into the matterwill continue.

The sheriff’s office assisted theHutchinson Police Departmentwith a combative individual at theMcLeod County Jail in GlencoeSunday at 9:48 p.m.

The sheriff’s office respondedto a noise and fireworks com-plaint on 100th Street, southeastof Glencoe, Sunday at 11:22 p.m.The Glencoe Police Departmentassisted. Deputies issued verbalwarnings and everyone left thearea for the night.

Tuesday, at 7:19 a.m., thesheriff’s office, Brownton First Re-sponders and Allina Ambulanceresponded to a medical on High-way 212, west of Brownton. Uponarrival, it was determined the in-dividual had passed away. Thedeath investigator and the localfuneral home were notified.

Also on Tuesday, at 1:53 p.m.,the sheriff’s office conducted awelfare check at an apartment onBowman Street in Stewart. Thedeputies spoke with individualsand took reports.

The sheriff’s office, WinstedFirst Responders and RidgeviewAmbulance were called to a med-ical on Dill Avenue, southwest ofWinsted, at 3:25 p.m., Tuesday.The patient was taken to theRidgeview Hospital by ambu-lance.

State Patrol

A single-vehicle rollover onHighway 7 resulted in the driver,David Hoke, 34, of Elk River,being critically injured. The acci-dent occurred at 8:21 p.m., Tues-day, Aug. 14, at milepost 129 onHighway 7 near Hutchinson. Ac-cording to the State Patrol, Hokewas eastbound on Highway 7 inhis 2002 Chevrolet Silverado,when he passed a corn truck thathad slowed for him to pass. Hokewent into the opposite lane topass another semi, when heswerved onto the westboundshoulder, corrected, lost controland ran off the road. He enteredthe east ditch and rolled severaltimes. Hoke was not wearing aseat belt and was ejected fromthe truck. Also responding to thescene were the Hutchinson Po-lice Department, McLeod CountySheriff’s Office, Allina Ambulanceand Hutchinson First Respon-ders.
