That 's how Dr . Barry Grossman,Assis tant Professor of Political Science, summed upan unusual situation which he encountered this pastweek. ' > *I It all began when Dr. Grossman and severa l Otherfaculty members became concerned that tuitionmight be incr*sed by the Board of Trustees withoutany s tudent or'faculty input. Told that th e ult imatedecision on the question would rest with th e Budgetand Finance Committe of the Board of Trustees, D r.Grossman prepared to petition th e Committee tosubm it to a day of on-campus hearings on the tuitionquestion, p

Originally, D r. Grossman sought to reach th eBudget and Finance Committee through the facultyrepresenta t ive to the Board of Trustees . M r. EdwardGallagher an d his.student counterpart , M r. FrankBar ry . T h e m a t t e r c a m e u p a t a meeting of theCollege Senate, bu t what resulted was a n invitationby Dr . He decided to draft a formal letter to theBudget and Finance Committee, which would containthe original request that th e members of thecommit tee appear on campus fo r on e o r two days ,during school hours, so tha t th e questions of concerned students and others regarding th e tuitionquestion might b e answered. }I n a phone call to M r. Willis Cardot, Vice-Presidentfo r Business Affairs and the chief liason between th eAdministration and the Budget an d Finance Committee , Dr. Grossman learned that the names of theother four memb ers of th e committee wore classifiedas "pro prie tary information" and not available .Recounting th e conversation, D r. S e n a t e R e f o r mEditor's Note: The following is a letter sent to Ms.Sharon Santia, Chairperson of th e Senate ConstitutionReform Committee from President Shane. A copyw a s sent to T h e Merciad an d is being reproduced thisweek in order to inform th e community o f D r . Shane'sfeelings towards new proposed constitutionscheduled t o b e presented a t a future Senate meeting. The proposed constitution and by-laws have beenreviewed by m e. Pursuant to my discussion with youon5April 7, I would like toistate the following impressions: 1. The basic play of the proposed constitution seems to remedy many of th e problems thatthe current Senate has faced. While moving towardthis representative style of governance posits goodfaith on the part of the constituencies represented, including that of the administration, I believe that apositive environment on campus can make the plansuccessful. | iftA :1 have been present when underclassmen approach upperclassmen withquestions an d concerns that they did no t want to taketo health services. there, but, that they wanted to go elsewhere. Fromthe need to know "where" came the Council. Comprised of individuals who were concerned (facultyand students), the Council began searching outclinics, physicians and serv ices that were needed bystudents. This information has been disseminated onand around campus in the fall and winter of 1974-75.The Council was being heard at the school. On occasion, seminars and speakers have been provided. There were some* in positions' of understanding wholistened and understood. It has been unpleasant formost of u s a t times. I In the long run, we feel that the information we'vegotten together and the students we've helped havemade it all worthwhile. W^ f |Mercyhurst College may have appeared astolerant and therefore: "approving." May it beproposed that some understanding be given to thosewho realize what the students* needs are and thatanother; opinion i s n o t unrealistic. K* -A s one w h o h a s been labeled "the instigator" of thiscrew, may I thank those members of the faculty andadministration who have understood (some insilence, others a ctively) a n d t o t h e students w ho werethe "seeds of thought and concern' a good many ofus are leaving but as an alumna, I want to look atthese still here and find that you're still listening tothose w ho need you.I Gretchen Krampf

C h e a t N o w !Dear Editor, \ 'I wholeheartedly agree with the students whocondone cheating. As a graduating senior who hasgone through several job interviews, I have but onemessa ge to impart to underclassmen: "Cheat whileyou have th e chance." | iM y reasons for espousing this supposedly morallydegenerate view are two-fold. First of all, a QPA isan arbitrary number which often reflects somethingwhich, for the 'mo st part, is unmeasurable -knowledge. Some people are better testers thanothers. Some teachers are biased; some testingsituations are a!sham. Why not beat the system?Education is a system, but grades sometimes unfairly label a PERSON. "f 5Secondly, when a job interviewer views an interviewee's Qualifications, his eyes almost alwaysrivet to the QPA a n d o n that basis alone, the studentis often judged. It doesn't matter to the interviewerthat grades are often no t the true m easure of ability.Ooen Letter

    T u i t i o n

The most important factor to the interviewer is thisarbitrary number. #It is considered immoral to cheat to raise a QPA.But, why has no one ever looked at another form offalse representationthe age old practice ofBrowniesBrowning a teacher. It's okay in thegrading system to play "Cecilia Suck Butt" butcheating is condemned. This seemes to be a contradiction. IIn summ ation, let me reiterate: Mercyhurst, CheatWhile You C a n ! IEdward BuryW o m e n ' s S p o r t sDear Editor, J[I think the time has come for someone to publiclyask the question has been on a lot of people's mindslately: Do the female athletes on this campus reallydeserve equality? By equality, of course, I meanequal equipment, eq ual, funds, and above all equalfa n support. ^There has been a lot of talk about the dedication ofour women athletes and until very recently I had noreason to question it. However, I've been m ore observant lately and have come to the conclusion thatou r girls are not exactly the saints we've been led tobelieve. This past Saturday (April 12) night I attended th e Sesler party and waspleasantly surprisedto see the men's crew team admirably restrictingthemselves to non-alcoholic beverages. "But where"I wondered, "is th e women's crew? Well, a couple ofthem were on 'the floor, some were happilystaggering among the crowd, and one brave soul wasattempting to relate, to her companion, the events ofher first chance in the boat. Needless to say I waspuzzled!;.Is this the way women get themselves inshapeis the female make-up so different thatalcohol gives them strength and * builds theirstamina? r iM \ .; ;Equality and respect must be earned by a definiteshow of determined effort. Does getting drunk thenight before your closing season game demandrespect? Does a practice with less than half the teamin attendance show a determined effort? And doesletting yourselves be seen drinking while your malecounterparts discipline themselves show a desire forequality? | &; (** f 1I sincerely would like to hear a reply from anywomen athletes if I have been misinformed oHif Ihave m isinterpreted th e situation.Roger Perry [P.S. If women find it impossible to disciplinethemselves perhaps they should get out of sports andleave athletic endeavors to the "stronger sex"!

I Like so many people in thenews these days, It seems thatMercyhurst College A has askeleton in its closeta storythat many peop le \ wouldrather n o t b e told, m $Last week, | as i s m ycustom,] I was rummagingthrough some "top secret 'ancient records stashed awayin a distant tower of Old M ain.Quite accidentally, I cameupon these photos and thestory that w a s connected withthem. I realized, with mysharp eye for a "hot" story, that this had to be shared w ithth e Mercyhurstt read ingpublic. I 3^ 4From 1 | the beg inn ing ,someone was * aware of myfind, and determined that Iwould not publish what I hadlearned. I found ananonymous note pasted on th ewindshield of my car, warning me not to publish the

story. I observed that the notewas written on Mercyhurststationery, in crayon, and th atmany words were misspelled. From these facta, I w as ableto deduce! that! the threatcame from the more literatesector of the com munity, andseemed to originate from thecollege ad m inistration. ,\Desp i te .the t h re a t s , Ipersisted in working on thestory. "THE PUBLIC H A S ARIGHT TO KNOW!" So herel t i s .Bl 3lYears ago, these men wereinvolved in] an insidiousscheme to turn Mercyhurstinto a Christian college. I grew. J j .The day arrived when themovement had \ grownJpowerful. The m an on the leftvested himself in a terribleblack robe and invoked theheavens, and h is par tne rcalled forth the thunder witha voice reminiscent oflightning, and many peoplewere led to believe that theworld w a s ending. " r{Fortunate ly fo r Mercyhurst, there was one man inthe c rowd* who w as no tparalyzed by the sights thatwere going on. He screamedout the magic * words thatbroke the te rrible sp ell. Little is known of whatbecame o f these men .Rumors have been numerous. One particularly persistentone has to do with theirhaving formed a singinggroup which is threateningother campuses across thecountry, using secret songs, which though they ^appearinnocuous, carry t h a tinsidious message.
