Isi *Dear Editor:The Merciad bills itself as the "Voice of theMercyhurst Community" yet it uses its resources topublish irrelevan t articles and unsuccessful attemptsat satire (such as the tacky Sport Opinion serieswhich has marred any integrity this paper may haveonce had). It is difficult to overlook th is irresponsibleselection of stories and the common misquotes andpoor editing present in the Merciad. I'm expectingthe comment th at I should remain and he lp the paperimprove. This may have been considered in the pastbut I no longer have the incentive to work on thiscollege's newspaper as it now exists. I hereby announce my resignation. I I\ Joanie StevensonJoanie, *It is with deep regret that I accept your resign ationfrom the newspaper "as it now^exists." It alwayshurts an organization to lose a qualified person.Hopefully the future issues will prove more relevant.Relevance, however, is in the eye of the beholder. To the Editor \We would like to commend the person who wrotethe Le tter to the Editor, "Campus Gossip." It wasnot only well-written but the problem, yes, theproblem of gossip on this campus, was stated clearly

by Esther SchreiberFor a person to take up smoking today, in th e faceof evidence that shows it to be proven a healthhazard, is, in my opinion, sho rt of self-destruction!Smoking has bee n proven to raise blood pressure, cause lung cancer, bring on he art attacks, and act asa catalyst in a number of associated diseases. Moreover, th e death rate is ten times highe r forthose who smoke as compared to non-smokers, iI am not t rying to say th at if you smoke, you willdie early, or get some "smoking-related" disease. But, the ch ances of becoming ill and shortening one'slife span are far g reat er for smokers. Statistics haveshown that millions of people have died fromdiseases related to the puffing of coffin na ils. Many people many argue that they thoroughlyenjoy the act of smoking, but others don't becausethey are aware of the dangers connected with it.These people would like very much to stop but find itdifficult if not impossible to stop because of theirphysical addiction to it Often people will claim thatthey need cigarettes to steady their nerves or keepfrom eating. This can be explained by the fact thatsmoking involved the use ot nicotine, a drug whichmakes adrenalin, a body hormone, flow and increase s body ene rgy. Pe ople will, for example, needa cigarette when angry, to "calm them down."Unfortunately, the body's n atural che mical is thrownout of orde r. "%Basically, all that a cigare tte consists of is treat ed

If your years at Mercyhursthave "simply" stimulated wonders, you should blessand; thank everyone who he lped effect such a" s i m p l e " t h in g in y o u . ? *I am presently involved in an adult educationprogram; rest assured, if any of the teachers Isupervise "stimulate wonders , they are doing themost I can ask of th em . As an adult you should naverealized by now th at you are your own product, th atit's up to you how meaningful your college ye ars willbe. * FRememberafter graduation, you will probablynever come in contact with so many interested andinteresting peopleall at one time, all in one place, including both teach ers and st uden ts.! Learn thiswhile you can. It may be the chance of a lifetime. After five years, I still feel it was "worth it."Sincerely, >*

Christine (Bogdanski) FinneganClass of 1970 iDear Editor:I agree that the Lakerettes deserve to be commended and are worthy of more recognition. Thequestion is, when ar e you going to give it to them? Somuch talk and space is given to the men's team , somewhich is pure nonsense. I think you could give thewomen's team equal time. Re member this was an allwomen s school just 4 y ears ago. %I Signed,Preparation H.Dear Preparation H.,The fact that this was a women's college 6 yearsago does not make the presence of men on campusany less real. The Merciad would be happy to give|the women's teams more copy; however, thereseems to be very few women on campus who are soinclined to write women's sports. I can assure youth at if I presume to write a sports column nonsensewould th en be totally abound, k *

tobacco wrapped in paper. When it is smoked, the tarand nicotine from the tobacco enter the lungs. Consequently, the tar builds up smothering the tiny airsacs of th e lung s. As a re sult, smoking inhibits one'sability to en gag e in long-winded activitiesas a littlebit of your lungs dies each time you smoke! fSmoking also contributes to the alreadyatmosphere and see ms to dominate the surroundingair anachoke and annoy those who do not smoke. Alsoit cling s distastefully to clothing and hair and spoilsthe clean scent. In short, the act of smoking does not require anyspecial ability or intelligence to hold a cigarettebetween on e's fingers and puff away. Smoking thoughhas been related to maturity because adults andbeautiful sophisticated women have been shown onTV in the past to be holding a cigarette . In reality, oking won't make you bette r; it may make a nice"crutch", and leave you sicker than when youstarted. , i i ' >JJ This article was not intended to be belligerent butmerely stresse s th at smoking is not very wise. Monday night, ^Mercyhurst took onfthe University of--Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) under the title of "LakerRevenge." Revenge was not achieved when the Lakersdropped a one point decision 80-79. When UPJ came onto th ecourt. I figured th at we had the g ame for sure but when thegame started my mind was immediately change d. All theyhad to do was throw th e ball into the air and with th e help ofthe refs and obviously some luck, th e ball wound up comingdown through the hoop. They were unbelievable! Mer-cyhurst went into the locker room tra iling 43-38 at half ime. When the game resumed M ercyhurst started to play someball. Mike-Molnar entered the lineup adding the spark heh as always been capable of and th e Lake rs came alive, thusbringing the crowd to the ir feet. The game-proved an otherheartbreaker as the Lakers went down by the point butLakers Emick, Repko and Albert nonetheless showed theirtalent. v I

    Sport Opinion

Well, to continue our "blatantly sexist" column we wish tocommend and lend our support to th e Women1 s Crew te am.Yes, Mercyhurst has a Women's crew, which last springstarted as a "cake" course and now is waiting for thewatertime needed to become a top-notch crew. The Hurst's Women's Crew team under the undyingleadership of Dave (Busch) Shimpeno, consists, so far, often dedicated students whose desire and determination areonly equaled by their male counterparts. Dave's Babesinclude Judy (Fountain) Mahoney, Sally (Storm) Gorndt.Eileen (Atlas) Wiesner, Patty (Peppermint) Mullaugh,Marsha (Chipmunk) Sm ith, Ge rry (Tony) Sica, Pa t(Beetle) Bailey, Sue, (Van) Pagan, Mary Clare (Derby)Redden, and last but not least Betty (Bull) Gartner. For th ose not familar with th e sport of crew, it would beeasy to imagine the simplicity involved in racing an eightoared shell. It isn't a sport where talent, strength, endurance, or coordination will suffice alone. It's a sportwhich combines all four of these factors at once over a 2000meter course with a coxswain constantly shouting in yourmug. Furthermore, in Brie, the All-American weathercontributes an additional factor to an already complexsport. When the Babes first get on the water this spring, itwill probably be about135 degrees and windy. Not reallvideal workout conditions since they'll be walking the boatinto knee-high water.| Besides Notre Dame and Michigan State, the Babes willtravel to th e Mid-American in Ohio, whe re some of the topsmall college crews will be competing for the championship. With enoughfwater time-and 100 per cent effortFrom every member on the team, the Babes could be asurprise victor in their first Regatta. \We intended to ask Dave's Babes why they decided to tryout for the crew team , but due to mid-terms and our generallack of time, we had to supply their answers (ourselves.Marsha Smith says that when it comes to rowing she's achip off the old dock. Judy Mahoney joined crew so shecould stav out of water Fountain s and ta ke it E-Z. Tony Sicawants to be able to master more sports than h er boyfriend, while Atlas Wiesnersays she wants to prove to th e g uys thatshe is stronger than h er breath. Peppermint Patty joined soshe could exercise her muscles more than her mouth whileBetty Gartner is simply bullish on crew. Mary (Mare saysher dishpan hands and beer gut make her a natural for thesport while Storm Gorndt says sh e will be an added se at forthe Hurst's fleet. Beetle Bailey says, "although her racketis little Richard, her g ame is crew. Sue Van Fagansays that if she drives with the oar like shedrives to the boards, there will be some great days forDave's Babes. j* jIn conclusion, Busch Shinpeno commented that his onlyreg ret of the g irls program so far was Gene Egan's failureto make the team.
