SeriesBy Catherine Cella and CarsonReed(CPS) "So. strange, theythink it's soo strange," reportsYale student Chris Chen Fellowstudents "usually don't sayanything as they break for inter-miss ion. They look l ikesomething t r aumat i c hashappened."What's happened is the bien-nial, eight-night-long Yale show-ing of a 1968 television show call-ed "The Prisoner." At Yale, theseries evokes from the audience acultish chanting "sort of likeRocky Horror (Picture Show),only a little more subtle, less sar-casti" Chen says. -;At the University of Miami, which will screen the series inMarch students "are very ex-cited a bout git," according toBeaumont theater official GeorgeCapewell. Miami plans * to leistudents free to the first episode,

Othersar e led by professors who use theseries to help demonstrate socialpsychology theories. The unlikely Object of all theunlikely attention is a 14-year-old, 17-part British televisionseries conceived and produced byits star, Patrick McGoohan.McGoohan plays a British in-telligence i agent -who angrilyresigns one day , for reasonsunknown, and is subsequently ab-ducted from his apartment bypersons unknown. Of such stirringly civil liber-tarian dialogue has come ateaching tool, of all things."This is a basic problem allsocieties face," says SocialPsychology Prof. Jer ryNeapolitan, who taught a"Prisoner" course at TennesseeTech University. The show is a wonderfullydramatic demonstration of the"the contradiction between

"The Prisoner," he adds, makes "students question ex-isting arrangements, thingsthey ve alw ays taken ' forgranted."Arizona State Prof. RobertShow, who has also taught a"Prisone r" course, is now "verycommitted to this approach." Ex-plaining the show manages toportray a social psych theory ofsymbolic interaction, he adds hisstudents find that ratherexciting."Yale's Chen, on the other hand, tries "not to take it too seriously. It takes the fun of it."But at Yale, "there is somepretty heavy coffee-houseanalysis following the shows.""Sometimes they don't like theidea of it. This is it. The climax of the1981-82 NCAA Basketball season. After the long post season pro-cess the "lesser teams" havebeen weeded out and the finalfour have - emerged;, Or havethey? J $ | I * fI have no doubts in my mindthat North Carolina should bethere. They have played wellthrough the season and went intothe tournament the No. 1 seed.Georgetown also has workedvery hard to get where they arenow. True they have six losses, but look a t the wayfthey havebeen playing for the last few mon-ths. They, too, seem to be one ofthe Nation's top teams. But whatabout the other two teams?Louisville is a good team with agreat bench, but are they one ofthe Nation's, best? And whatabout Houston? I honestly don'teven know if they ar e ranked inthe top 20. With teams such asthis in the final four it brings tomind-questions concerning thetourney process. With all thepossible combinations why doesthe NCAA use a 48-team singleelimination process. "A t doesn'tseem fair that Houston is in thefinal four and teams like DePauland Virginia are at home.I personally favor a 32-teamdouble elimination tournament. It would take longer but wouldfavor a team like DePaul whogets eliminated the first round

At fa news conference heldThursday morning at MercyhurstCollege, Dr. William P. given in the Master Plan," heexplained. -5 * *r* Garvey said that swimmingwould be added to the Lakers pro-gram ? to give Erie student-swimmers a hometown collegewhere? they J can continue toachieve in the sport while pursu-ing a college career. S Mercyhurst wouldji use off-campus practice and game sites.Athletic scholarships for bothmen and women swimmerswould be available, according toGarvey,i|; f tv college official will take theirrecommendation for a start-update to the board of trustees laterthis month, an d a final decision isexpected to be announced withina month. $E&2BE&bM* ' F

have a great team. tAs for the winner of this year'stournament , .I l ike NorthCarolina. I will admit that I am alittle prejudiced in my judgmentbut I still think that Dean Smithis finally going to win one (for achange). Louisville has a greatbench but Georgetown's bigman,Pat;Ewing, will take them;totown, but fall to the twin towers ofPerkins and Worthy.
