Today’s Readings PREPARE THE WAY

Saint John the Baptist appears on

the scene today as Advent enters its second week. The mysterious consumer of locusts and wild honey, John echoes the words of the prophet Isaiah as he calls for repentance in the face of the nearness of the kingdom of heaven. The rhythms of the Christian life are often confounding. Each year we meet the Baptist and hear his calls for repentance. Each year we see him pointing to the one who is coming after him, the Lord Jesus. Yet each year the words and actions of John the Baptist echo anew in our hearts, because we have fallen into old sinful traps again and again. Advent gives us the opportunity once again to turn away from our sinful ways and embrace the gospel way of life. John the Baptist invites us to prepare the way for the Lord, in whom we place our hope.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

UNA PALABRA DE PADRE RAY

A WORD FROM FR. RAY

CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE: Please take note of the mass times for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Even though Christmas falls on a Sunday, we will follow the Christmas schedule of masses, and NOT the Sunday schedule.

Christmas Eve: Saturday – Dec. 24, 2016 4 pm ~ Church Fr. Manny Guico 4 pm ~ Community Center Fr. Brian Highfill 6 pm ~ Church Fr. Ray Rioux 10 pm ~ Church Fr. Manny Guico Midnight ~ Church Fr. Ray Rioux

Christmas Day: Sunday, December 25, 2016 9:30 am ~ Church Fr. Max Oliva 11:30 am ~ Church (Spanish) Fr. Max Oliva

There are NO other masses on Christmas day

Advent Day of Reconciliation There will be priests available on Wednesday, December 7th in church to hear confessions from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm (English) and then again from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm (English and Spanish). Please take advantage of this beautiful sacrament in preparation for Christmas.

Immaculate Conception ~ Holy Day of Obligation Thursday, Dec. 8th we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of obligation for all Catholics. Masses will be at 8:00 am and 7:00 pm that day. Please plan on attending to celebrate the Patroness of the United States and to pray for her protection and guidance of our country.

Here’s hoping that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. On behalf of the staff and myself, I thank you for your generous support of CTK in your donations and those of you involved in our ministries. I thank you also for your continued patience as well as we finish the many projects that are still underway. Many thanks again to our benefactors that have underwritten the costs for so many needy refits and maintenance.

As a reminder, we are closing in on the end of our CSA pledges. Unfortunately we are still behind in our pledge campaign by $8,364.99. If we do not meet our goal, we will be required to make up the difference. The total goal is $108,981.00 and we currently have pledged $105,899.05 and actual paid pledges as of November 27, 2016 we are at $100,526.01. If per chance you have not made a pledge, it isn’t too late. Envelopes will be available at the information center after the Sunday Masses or during business hours at the parish office. Let’s make an effort to make this year’s campaign successful.

If we could have at least 100-200 families donate a onetime pledge of $50.00 towards our CSA 2016 before the end of next month the 31st of December 2016, this would help us make our goal for CSA 2016.

Please Note: There will be a strict and enforced code on Staff Parking. Vehicles parked in Staff Parking will require a placard placed on the dashboard in plain sight. Any vehicle parked without a permit will be towed at the owner’s expense. Please be respectful of our Staff Parking and not block the Staff Parking area during business hours and weekends. These spaces are used by staff 7 days a week, as many of our staff teach after hours, plan Liturgies, teach classes and on the weekends are ministering at our Sunday Masses. So again I ask that you please do not park in the staff parking spaces.

Fr. Ray

LOVE TREE ORNAMENTS ARE ON OUR LOVE TREE

THIS WEEKEND Our tree is covered with wishes from the needy

All parishioners wanting to fulfill a wish are invited to choose an ornament you know you can provide, purchase the gift, and return it to the Love Tree (unwrapped) by the weekend of December 3/4 or December 10/11. Please securely attach the ornament to the gift, so it is plainly visible and will not come loose. The CTK team will see to it that the gift reaches the appropriate agency.

There will be someone in the Community Center collecting the gifts after every mass on the 3rd & 4th and the 10 & 11th.

"SIMBANG GABI" ~ December 16 - 24, 2016 BACKGROUND: In the Philippines, "Simbang Gabi" is a daily mass/novena just before Christmas, celebrated early in the morning, 4-5am or in the evening 6-7pm. It is also called “Misa de Gallo” (mass when the cock crows) or “Misa de Aguinaldo”. This is a very much desired Filipino religious tradition. Back home, families wake up early, attend Mass and fill up many churches. After the liturgy, delicious Filipino food and delicacies are served and shared by families. Thus this becomes both a religious and social gathering.

All parishioners, are invited to attend, participate in the novena. The Pastor/Associate at the assigned parish may preside the liturgy. Visiting priests may be welcome to concelebrate. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Did St. Francis of Assisi invent the Christmas crib? Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejeweled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to celebrate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord's birth before us, and it's the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night throughout Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day. If the children are good, then the Christ child will have plenty of soft bedding when he is placed in the manger on Christmas. --Rev. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

If, due to your schedule, you can’t join us at our regular Thursday night sessions, please call the parish office at (702) 871-1904 and leave your name and phone number. Small Church Communi es; a way of being

Church Small Church Communities are groups of 6 to 8 people who gather in homes to reflect on the scriptures of the upcoming Sunday and their significance in their lives. All ministries and organizations connected to Christ the King are asked to use a simple formula for prayer as they gather: Read one of the scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. Take a few moments to reflect on one of the questions related to the scripture (in Fr. Ray’s column). Invite individuals to share their response with the person next to them; encourage people to share with someone they do not know well. Before we know it we have grown closer as a community!

Please call Chris at (702) 378-5622 or e-mail at [email protected]

Please remember to recycle your old cell phones, ink and toner cartridges with us weekly when you attend Mass. Collection containers are in the Gathering Space of the Church and in the North and South entrances of our Activity Center. You can also drop them off Monday - Thursday 8:00 -4:00 in the Parish Office.

A BIG THANK YOU FOR ALL THE INK AND TONER
