Today’s Readings SACRIFICE

Today the Church focuses on the Eucharist. Today’s readings remind us how connected to ancient blood sacrifices we are when offering our unbloody sacrifice. The reading from Exodus describes a solemn ritual designed so the Israelites would never forget their covenant with God.

The reading from the Letter to the Hebrews turns us from those ancient animal sacrifices, the first efforts to worship the living God. Our sacrifice is the body and blood of the Son of God. Because of Christ we have a new covenant.

The Gospel from Mark retells the establishment of that covenant, the familiar story of the Last Supper. Juxtaposed with the story of animal sacrifice as it is here, we are challenged to listen with new attention, to remember the great price paid for our salvation. Jesus gave his body and every drop of his blood for us.

SACRIFICIO

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The cup of salvation I will take up, and I will call upon the name of the LORD.

Last week, I gave you a little background to Fr. Ray Rioux, the new pastor for Christ the King. Actually, anytime someone is new in the diocese and is taking over a parish, he is called "Administrator" for a while -- maybe even a year or two. Eventually, he will be named

"Pastor"; for example, although Fr. John Assalone has been in charge of St. Francis of Assisi for several years now, he has been "Administrator" and will officially become "Pastor" on July 1. However, the difference between "Administrator" and "Pastor" is not much: Fr. Ray will be in charge of the parish. Now, I want to talk about your acceptance of and relationship to Fr. Ray. As you remember from his resume, he has extensive experience in parish work and diocesan assignments, too. So, he is not coming to CTK as a pastor for the first time or lacking in experience. But, he will not be a 'clone' of myself. He will be different and probably do things differently in some ways. The worst thing anyone could say to him or about him as he leads the CTK community is that this isn't "the way Fr. Bill used to do it!" He is not Fr. Bill (me) and to compare him (negatively) to me will be very unfair. When Bishop Joseph Pepe and Fr. Bob Stoeckig (Vicar General for the diocese) asked Fr. Ray what he would do in taking over a parish after a pastor had been there a long time (and he didn't yet know at that point in this conversation that CTK was the parish in consideration), he replied that he would listen for the first year and find out who were the leaders. A good answer! When he was told that it was CTK, he was excited to accept the assignment! Now, I'm not saying that he will do nothing for "one year" -- but I'm sure he will want to keep things at CTK pretty much as they are and, yet, at the same time bring in some new, fresh ideas, programs and opportunities. I beg you to give him that chance. Be patient with him as he will probably be a bit nervous: I know I certainly would be if the roles were reversed! So, let Fr. Ray be Fr. Ray. Get to know him and let him know you. PLEASE no comparisons to me and warn your fellow parishioners about this as well. And, I don't want phone calls or e-mails to me about the way things are different at CTK. I expect them to be different: so don't think that his way or my way is better or worse, just different. I think it will be an exciting time for each of you, for Fr. Ray and for the entire Christ the King Catholic Community. Thanks so much. Love to all.
