Sunday School Kickoff By Julie Messbarger

August 20, 9:45am

September 10, 9:45am

Shawnee campus

Welcome to the start of

another great year of

Sunday School! We hope

this information will give

you a glimpse into what is

happening in the life of

our children at Trinity. We

are excited about this new

year and hope you are too!

Mark your calendars now

for Sunday School Kickoff.

Kickoff will be on August

20 at 9:45 am at the

Mission campus and

September 10 at 9:45 at the

Shawnee campus. This will

be a parent/child event

where we will share

pertinent information

about the upcoming year.

You and your child will

meet the Sunday School

teachers and visit the

classrooms. At least one

parent from each family is

expected to attend with

their children. We will then

continue the kickoff

celebration with fellowship,

fun, and breakfast.

Sunday School

registration is now open.

Please visit the Sunday

School page on tlcms.org

the new school year.

Mentoring at Mission Campus By Julie Messbarger

All children from second

to fifth grade are assigned

a youth or adult mentor.

This is crucial to forming

relationships at Trinity.

Each mentor volunteers

his or her time to make

connections with each

child. It is important that

children are here by 9:35am

so that they can spend the

full ten minutes with their

mentor. Children two years

through first grade will

spend this first 10 minutes

participating in classroom

activities.

A Summer to Serve is an

intergenerational event for

children, youth, families and

all congregation members

on Sunday mornings at

Trinity from 9:45 – 10:45am

at both our Mission and

Shawnee campuses. It takes

the place of summer

Sunday school. Each

Sunday this summer we will

explore God’s Word for

our lives based on the Fruit

of the Spirit. We will share

a short devotional and

grow in fellowship with one

Bags with lists of supplies

attached were handed

out following worship the

weekend of July 29-30.

Don’t worry—it’s not too

late! Visit tlcms.org to view

a list of supplies. Please

consider making a donation

and bring your bag back to

church by the following

Intentional Personal Ministry By Tom Perry

Saturday, August 19,

9am-noon

Mission Campus

What is a personal

ministry and, more

importantly, what is your

personal ministry? Most

people, if asked if they are

loving and caring, would

most likely characterize

themselves as being so.

But how does that

manifest itself into

intentional action by you?

How are you spreading

Christ’s love and promise

to others?

On August 19 at 9am

Trinity will sponsor an

event in which we will

encourage and assist you in

finding ways to participate

in your own intentional

personal ministry. We will

have members of the

Shawnee and Mission

campuses tell what they

have done and how they

got started. You will have

the opportunity to

participate that morning in

an in-house mission

activity. The goal is that you

will leave looking for ways

that you can uniquely share

the blessings of being a

Child of God.

Sharing the unique gifts

God has given you can

come in a wide variety of

ways. Find ways that you

share with others in an

enjoyable and eager way.

We hope to see you on

August 19!

We will begin our worship

together with a Summertime

Hymn Sing! This is a great

opportunity to sing your

favorite hymns of the faith.

Our Music and Arts

Director, Ben A. Spalding,

will lead this inspiring hymn

sing and we’ll use specific

verses of the hymns you

suggest that morning so we

can sing as many selections

as possible. If you have a

favorite hymn, plan on

sharing it that morning as

we join with the heavenly

chorus in praising our

wonderful Creator!

Part of our 2017-2018

budget are repairs to the

Mission campus parking lot.

These repairs include

replacing the concrete curb

and asphalt at the two

western entrances from

Woodson Road as well as

seal-coating and restriping.

The entrance repairs will

likely occur the week of

August 10-14. These two

entrances will be unavailable

the days of these repairs.

The entrance off of 62nd

Street will be open to

provide access to our

parking lot.

Top coat seal and striping

will occur the week of

August 22 – 25. This is

expected to take one

day. Of course this activity

is dependent on weather, so

we will not know the

specific day until much

closer to the activity. The

church office will connect

Mission Campus Parking Repairs By Larry Conrad

with the groups that have

events scheduled for the

day(s) we expect the

parking lot to be off-limits.

We do not anticipate any

restrictions to accessing the

parking lot for Saturday and

Sunday worship services.

We appreciate your

understanding as we try to

juggle building

access during

these repairs.

This entrance will be

closed for repairs.

This entrance will be

This entrance

will be open.

another. It’s a profound gift

to have someone here look

you in the eyes and speak a

word of God’s peace,

God’s presence, and God’s

grace to you. My breathing

slows and eyes flutter shut

after this. It’s a sacred thing

to receive.

The same thing happened

when we visited Irma again.

She promptly invited us in

and onto the roof of her

home, which is where the

most space was for

company. There we talked

and enjoyed the fruit she

gave us as a gift. Hanna

brought along some

bracelets to give to children

and she gave so many away!

She gave one to Irma’s

daughter. Irma wanted me

to tie it to her little wrist. I

did, smiling. Her big, brown

eyes looked at me. She

smiled shyly as I tightened

the knot. The bracelet was

still so loose, but Irma gave

me a hug and said,

“Gracias.”

“Gracias. Thanks be to

God,” she said. “I thank

God for you, for your

church, for your work. My

family is blessed because of

you. May God bless you

and your families also.”

Irma, this beautiful Mayan

woman, speaks this blessing

to you, my friends at

Trinity. Gracias!

There’s another special

tradition to these

Guatemalan trips. Patricia

likes to put together a

cultural experience night

where we share a traditional

Mayan meal and learn about

the culture. The food was

beyond delicious (even the

extra little green pumpkin

Doug asked me to eat for

him, quickly, before anyone

saw)! The experience is

great.

Later in the week we drive

to Chuchipaca, which is

where efforts are made

through Trinity mission

work to provide food and

better housing conditions

for the people there.

Chuchipaca is remote and

they welcome us with pine

needles spread on the

ground. It’s how they

decorate for special

occasions. They prepared a

meal for our time together, a

meal for which Trinity

purchased materials. They

eagerly wait for the shoes

and sweatshirts we brought

there from you. The

children’s faces were eager

like our children’s faces at

Christmas.

Matiox…

This year I saw how much

the work of empowering

women mattered. It’s

essential to the mission here

in Panajachel and

Chuchipaca. We talked with

Mercedes and Gloria who

are missionaries of sorts;

their ministry received mini-

grant support and other aid

from Trinity. They have a

ministry of helping women

navigate and step into a new

future, new self, by God’s

grace and God’s presence.

They care for women

suffering in abusive

relationships and who come

so near to death and severe

malnutrition. They find

these women and graft them

into a community of grace,

support, and

Page 9: The Messenger - tlcms.org€¦ · 08/08/2017  · 50+ Kickoff Meet and Greet 4 Rushton School Supply Drive 6 Mission Campus Parking Repairs 7 Financial Peace University 12 Inside

Page 9 The Messenger

companionship. It’s

beautiful to hear about. It’s

beautiful to see their faces

glow yet also drop tears as

they share the stories of

liberation, stories that are

their own past as well.

This is why I think a very

special gift given to Jane

Musgrove was wonderful to

witness. The women of

Chuchipaca looked Jane in

the eyes and said, “Thank

you for your leadership and

your work.” Jane would tell

you all she doesn’t see

herself as a leader per se,

but a companion among the

others in the team. But

when those women looked

at Jane, I wonder what they

saw. A woman who had

traveled so far to help

others, who worked to get a

group of fellow missionaries

(of sorts) to Guatemala. It

was neat to see her

celebrated in this way.

There are many other

stories to tell and our team

will gladly do so at both

campuses. We’ll let you

know when that happens.

Until then, remember the

goodness of God, the grace

of God that’s yours in

Jesus. Remember to look

those around you in the eye

and know them as the

blessing that they are. And

receive the blessings they

might speak to you, maybe

with words you do not

understand. Benedictions

come that way, I’ve learned.

And the peace of God

continues to surpass all

understanding. Let’s keep

the beautiful people of

Guatemala in our prayers

and in our compassionate

action. Let’s keep going to

Guatemala to do what we

can so that the love of God

continues to ripple from one

smiling face to another,

from one benediction to

another.

Grace and peace to you,

Pastor Ben
