History of the Special Operations Warrior Foundation
The Special Operations Warrior
Foundation (SOWF) began in 1980 as the
Col. Arthur D. "Bull" Simons Scholarship
Fund. The Bull Simons Fund was created
following the Iranian hostage rescue
attempt, to provide college educations for
the 17 children who survived the nine men
killed or incapacitated at Desert One.
The SOWF mission is to provide a college
education to every child who has lost a
parent in the line of duty while serving in
Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps
Special Operations, and to assist in caring
for the severely wounded.
Nearly 70,000 military special operations
and support personnel are stationed in units
throughout the United States and overseas.
The Warrior Foundation is committed to providing scholarship grants, not loans, to
approximately 1,200 children. These
children survive 1,100 Special Operations
personnel who gave their lives in service to
their country.
To date, 338 children of fallen special
operations warriors have graduated from
college and 151 are currently attending college. The SOWF has 847 children
currently in the program to educate.
.
SOWF is the recipient of its 13th
consecutive 4-star rating, placing the SOWF
among the top 1% of charities rated by
Charity Navigator.
