ITCH THAT SCRATCH

Cats need to scratch for physical and emotional reasons and we need to provide our cats with acceptable places to dig their claws into. The primary requirements for a scratching post or cat tree are that it’s sturdy, stable and well placed. If that doesn’t work there are caps available that glue right on to the nails making them blunt so they cannot damage couches, chairs, etc. These caps are called SOFT PAWS and they come in many fun colors as well. For more information please call our offi ce or stop by.

Construction work is progressing well on the Dawson Creek/Chetwynd Area Transmission Project (DCAT).
Starting in June and throughout the summer, helicopter work will be taking place along the DCAT right-of-way. Helicopters are being used intermittently for conductor stringing between the Pine River area and Dawson Creek Substation.
Please note that helicopter work is weather dependent, so all dates are approximate.
BC Hydro and its contractors have obtained the necessary permits and permissions, and will be in compliance with Transport Canada requirements.
For more information on the DCAT project, visit bchydro.com/dcat or contact BC Hydro at [email protected] or toll free 1 866 647 3334. 46

The decision to hold the U17 Hock-ey Worlds in Dawson Creek means minor hockey players won't be start-ing their seasons on out-of-town ice.
The tournament has cleared up some uncertainty around access to ice at the start of the season, as re-pairs take place at the Kin and Memo-rial Arenas.
Because of the tournament, the Encana Centre will have ice at the be-ginning of the coming hockey season
Oct. 1, Dawson Creek Minor Hock-ey Association President Sheldon Wilkinson told Alaska Highway News. Before that announcement, organiz-ers were looking at booking ice time in Taylor, Hythe and Chetwynd.
Had that been the case, five to nine-year-old hockey players likely would have played a shortened season.
The tournament will allow them to bridge the gap between the start of the season and the reopening of Kin and Memorial, scheduled for late Oc-tober.
Dawson Creek and Fort St. John
will host the international U17 com-petition Oct. 30-Nov. 7.
"That's going to give us a basic amount of ice, so we're starting on time," Wilkinson said.
Minor Hockey registration is now open, and taking place as usual. Around 300 kids registered in minor hockey last year, a number that has been growing.
"We were worried with the ice whether this would be a detriment to our growth, but I hope it's not and I
hope we still see increased registra-tion just like we have the past few years," said Wilkinson.
The Memorial Arena was closed late last year due to a mechanical fail-ure, sending ice users scrambling. Ice at the Encana Centre relieved some of the pressure, while other users were shifted to the smaller Kin Arena.

In all, 318 cars were registered for Sun-day’s main event.
“It’s a little less than last year,” said Blain Massee, president of the Mile Zero Cruisers. “This morning we had some ugly clouds and we had rain in Grande Prairie and Tumbler Ridge. But, here in
God’s country we had no rain, so they missed out.”
Events carried on all weekend, culmi-nating in Sunday’s Show and Shine.
A classic car rally was held Saturday. Participants cruised to each of the
event’s sponsors, collecting playing cards along the way to make a poker hand for a chance to win prizes. Cont. on Page 9

Kindergarten students at Notre Dame School in Dawson Creek recent-ly won $125 in a contest, and paid it forward by buying a bike for a child in need.
Kids from Haylie Laursen’s Kinder-garten class entered the Happy Helmet Day contest sponsored by Northern Brain Injury Association.
The event was held in conjunction with Brain Injury Awareness month in June. Cash prizes were donated by True North Injury Lawyers.
Entering was simple. All they had to
do was bring their helmets from home, decorate them during class while dis-cussing helmet safety and take a group photo.
The fi ve- and six-year-old students ended up winning the youth catego-ry, competing against students from across the north, from Quesnel to the Yukon.
“Our winnings included a new bi-cycle helmet as well as $125 to spend as we wished,” Laursen explained.
“My 23 students decided to pur-chase a bike for a child in need who lives in Dawson Creek, as well as the helmet they won.”

Continued from Page 5A steak dinner followed, with
a cruise to Rolla Pub capping off the night.
“There was an ice cream stand in Rolla,” one participant said. “I think we pretty much bought them out.”
Massee noted there were a few hiccups, which were to be expected with a show of this size, but overall everything went well.
For Dennis Stork of Farm-ington, who brought his 1968 Dodge Coronet, one of those hiccups was an exploding water pump, which left him wonder-ing if he would make it in for the weekend.
“I pre-registered, so I fi gured I should come anyway,” Stork said as he popped the hood and began wiping down the inside of the engine. “It’s a good thing I brought rags,” he said.
Mile Zero Cruisers 21st annual Summer Cruise
• The Summer Cruise be-gan in 1995 when Dawson Creek resident Viril Ander-son had an idea: He want-ed to get a bunch of car enthusiasts together for a barbecue and go for a ride afterwards.
• Two decades later, it's be-ing billed by organizers as the largest Show and Shine in the North.
• Twenty vehicles were at that fi rst ever cruise, whereas Sunday saw 318 classic cars lining nine city blocks.
• From the beginning, the show has been welcoming to all makes and models. You could even fi nd motor-ized barstools, go carts and tractors at this years event.
• The Mile Zero Cruisers meet every Thursday night between 7 and 7:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Credit Union parking lot. "No matter what your ride, shiny or tar-nished, dented or fi nished, you are welcome in the Mile Zero Cruisers," presi-dent Blain Massee said.

NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL), a wholly owned subsidiary of TransCanada PipeLines Limited (TransCanada), is proposing to construct, own and operate an expansion to the NGTL System that will safely deliver natural gas. The pipeline will consist of approximately 85 kilometres (km) of up to 36-inch diameter (914 mm) pipe that will start in the County of Saddle Hills, 80 km northwest of Grande Prairie, Alta., and end 31 km southeast of Fort St John, B.C. in the Peace River Regional District. Muscle cramps are the result of the involuntary and painful contraction of a muscle or group of muscles. The contraction causes in ammation (swelling, sensation of warmth, etc.) and sometimes sti ness in the legs, arms, or back.
There are many reasons why your muscles may cramp including:
• awkward movements• blows (trauma)• voilent or unusual exercise• diseases, such as osteoarthritisAmong these reasons, unusual exercise is the
most frequent. Who has never felt pain after shoveling snow for 2 hours, or skiing for the rst time of the season? The pain comes from the fact that these activities stimulate rarely used muscles and that people fail to warm up their muscles beforehand.
Muscle cramps from exercise cannot be prevented except by doing appropriate warm-up exercise prior to physical activity.
How can you relieve muscle pain?Resting is always a good thing, and applying
ice to the sore area during the rst 48 hours is very helpful. Cold is an e ective way to reduce blood ow and thus stop the in ammatory process. But never apply ice directly on the skin (since you could get frostbite). Instead, wrap the ice bag in a wet towel.
After the in ammatory process is completed, apply heat to help reduce the swelling. Heat, from any source, promotes blood ow by widening blood vessels.
Hot water bottles or dry or moist heat pads can be used as sources of heat. Moist heat pads give the best results. Never use a heat pad while you sleep or you could be severely burned. For more informations, see the handout on PAINFUL INJURY: HEAT or ICE? published by Vigilance Santé
If heat fails to relieve your muscle cramps,
MUSCLE CRAMPS SrinivasChalagalla
B.Pharm., PhD
talk to your pharmacist. who may suggest a medication to relieve the pain.
Pain medicationsAnalgesics and muscle relaxants drugs can
be used to relieve painful muscle cramps. Analgesics are available in two forms: topical (external analgesics) or oral. Oral drugs are more e ective but also cause more side e ects.
External analgesicsAll external analgesics are applied in the
same manner: apply to the a ected area, massage and repeat 3 to 4 times a day. Since they do not all contain the same ingredients, they have di erent e cacy and cause various e ects. Topical analgesics produce a sensation of warmth, cold or nothing at all. Some are odorless. They can interact with oral medication even though they are applied on the skin.
Oral tablets: Analgesics drugs and muscle relaxants
When stronger muscle pain occurs, people may need oral analgesics or anti-infl ammatory drugs (NSAID). If these do not relieve the pain completely, a muscle relaxant can be added. Some of these drugs are available without a prescription, while others are not.
In general, all NSAIDs are equally e ective—when the right dose is taken—and all are somewhat di cult on the stomach. Always take them with food or milk and people who have a history of ulcers should avoid them. NSAIDs are di erentiated by their time of onset and the time they take to achieve their maximum eff ect.
All muscle relaxants cause drowsiness and dryness of the mouth. Ask your pharmacist to help you nd the right one for you.

LEFFERSONWilliam Jack
It is with unbearable sadness that we announce the sudden passing of William Jack Lefferson on July 01, 2015. He died in the Prince George Hospital
surrounded by his family. He was returning from his annual salmon shing trip to Terrace, with his brother Alan, when he went into respiratory distress and later had a massive stroke. Though his loss is devastating to us, he died after doing something he dearly loved and is once again with his loving wife - whom he has missed since her death 6 years ago. Everyone thinks that the reworks on the rst were for Canada Day but really it was just Mom giving Dad hell. He is survived by his brother Alan, sister Dorothy, sister-in-law Alma, his 3 children Pat (Allen), Brian (Carolyn) and Duane, and grandchildren Kyle, Brody, Sebastian, Baden, Kiara, and Alex, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a very informal gathering held in remembrance of Dad on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at his home from 3:00 - 5:00pm.

By Roy ForbesLillian (named for
her aunty Fern, who’s second name was Lil-lian, and for her aunty Blanche, our matri-arch, who is here with us today) was born in Pouce Coupe, B.C. on March 27th, 1941. Her parents, Roy and Mar-garet Forbes, lived in Rolla. Daddy farmed some land and had the coveted H plate
for the district. He hauled grain and other commodities for the community. Mom was at the beginning of her long stint as our amazing mother. At the time, Nan and Grandpa Forbes were running the Columbia Hotel, now the famous Rolla Pub.
Lil’s musical talents were front and center during her early days in Rolla. She sang in the choir at the United Church and was musically active in the various youth groups in the little community. When there was bully-trouble in the schoolyard, Lil would stick up for her younger siblings.
In 1955, our father died suddenly, a devastating tragedy that shook our family to the core. Lil was just 14 and, as Rhoda says, “We had to grow up quite fast when our dad died...working hard, doing laundry, house cleaning and anything else we could do to help Mom”.
Mom married Dave Fellers in 1959 and the family (Lillian, Rhoda, Margaret Ann, Judi and I) left Rolla for Dawson Creek. Dave brought Betty, Dorothy and Bill to our blended family. In 1963, we were blessed with our little sister, Brenda.
Lil had a varied and interesting working life. In the early sixties, she went to Ontario with her good friend Jackie Johnson where she worked as a hospital recep-tionist. After a couple of years, she returned to Dawson Creek where she put in a stint as a telephone operator with BC Tel, moving on after a while to manage a ladies clothing store in Peace River. She then went to Fort Nel-son where she hired on with CN as a telephone operator, staying for around three years. In the late sixties, she relocated to Vancouver to take a job with Yellow Pages, where she stayed until 1973 when she returned to the Peace Country, moving into the family house in Rolla.
On her Peace Country return, Lil worked for the Peace River Block News and delivered mail, all the while tak-ing courses at Northern Lights College, working towards her degree in social work. Lillian became a social worker in the Dawson Creek area, having a positive effect on many young lives.
Lillian eventually returned to Fort Nelson. She worked closely with the Fort Nelson First Nations Chalo School. While working with children and their families she also spent time with the Elders, learning about the First Na-tions culture. Lil immersed herself in the culture, which enabled her to offer her help in a way that benefited all she encountered.
Aunty Lil LOVED her nieces and nephews and spent a lot of time with them in the early years. (The niece-and-nephew stories of wild and crazy escapades and adven-tures with their fun loving aunt were a highlight of the eulogy I presented at Lillian’s service.) Travis summed it all up when he said, “She was a great Aunt. We (nieces and nephews) were lucky to have had her in our lives”.
Our sister Lillian was the best big sister anyone could ever have. She was glamorous, classy, sassy, sophisti-cated and very giving to her younger siblings. As Brenda says, “Lil was incredibly generous with her time and her love and her money. She bought the best gifts EVER! She was a role model for other women in that she was
a natural born feminist and, like being a Christian, she never had to tell you, because she lived it. It was the real deal”.
Lillian loved to cook. She was always up for trying new things, introducing all kinds of exotic-for-the-time dishes (both savoury and sweet) to the family recipe cache, long before they became the norm in our collec-tive culture. As Rhoda says, “Lil was an awesome cook. She taught us there was more than salt and pepper for seasoning”.
Music is what so many of us remember Lil for. That lovely, smooth, velvety voice.
Judi has many fond memories and stories of singing with Lil at Rotary Manor in her later years, after her stroke in 2004. Lil was an honourary member of the Potluck Singers and, legend has it, was the only one who didn’t need a lyric book in front of her. Lil knew the words to almost every old song there was; country, rock and roll, pop, jazz or otherwise. Judi says, “My time doing gigs with Lil throughout the care home pods were some of my favourite times in the whole world - even though she did boss me around and couldn’t tolerate me playing the wrong chords. I wonder if those angel guitar players make mistakes. Lordy!”,
As for me, Lillian was one of most important shapers of my musical sensibility. Her inquisitive, adventur-ous nature expanded my musical horizons beyond the country, rock and roll and pop music that was all around us. She brought home jazz LPs as well as show tunes, big band and light classical records, which I soaked up like a sponge. Lil gave me my first Bob Dylan and Billie Holiday albums. And so on.
And, I have to say that, over the years, one of the deep-est music-making connections I’ve ever had was with my big sister. That connection continued until our last musical get-together at Rotary Manor, back in February of this year.
It seems like I’ve been up here a long while and yet it feels like I’m just getting started. There was so much to Lil’s amazing and varied life. She touched so many, so deeply. I feel like I’ve left out so much. And, frankly, I want to keep talking because I don’t want to face the fact that Lillian is gone and that I have to learn to live without her.
But, actually, Lillian is not really gone. Her spirit is here today, in all of our hearts.
As Brenda said, “We all have memories and snippets of what we knew and remember of Lillian. But, it wouldn’t matter how many memories or stories we share - she was so much more”.
In closing, many thanks to the gang at Reynar’s Funeral Home for taking such good care of us during these past difficult days. Big hugs to Bev Dunsmore for officiating today. And, thanks to Larry McGowan for the care and love he put into making Lil’s bird-house urn.
I’d like to thank my sisters for watching over Lil the way they did over the past eleven years, after her stroke, and for their selfless dedication during Lil’s last long days. Finally, a HUGE thank you to the professional, caring, loving, dedicated staff at Rotary Manor for taking such good care of our old sweetheart.
Special Memories of Lil were written and presented at her celebration of life by her brother; Roy Forbes.
Lillian passed away peacefully surrounded by her fam-ily on Saturday June 20, 2015 in Dawson Creek at the age of 74 years.
A celebration of Lil’s life was held on Friday, June 26, 2015 at 1:00pm from Reynars Funeral Chapel. Bev Dunsmore officiated. Interment was held in the Rolla Cemetery.
For friends so wishing donations may be made in memory of Lil to the Rotary Manor Resident Council Fund 1125-90th Avenue Dawson Creek, B.C. V1G 5A3.

Catherine Elizabeth Graham was born on May 1/1950 in Yellowknife NWT, Canada. Cathy is survived by her mother Eliza Bishop, six brothers and two sisters, their wives and husbands, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband of 34 years Richard
Graham, their daughters Diana (Darrell Crull) grandchildren, Devon (Ana), Dalina and their other daughter Deborah Graham. Her father
Lorne, and her two sons David (1975) and Kevin (2012) predeceased Cathy. Cathy was a long time resident of Dawson Creek BC living here as a
child for some years then moving back in the late 1970’s. Cathy and Rick also split their time the last few years between Dawson Creek and a winter home in Montserrat West Indies first going to Montserrat in the fall of 2008 and spending several months each year there since 2011. While in Montserrat and in the Dawson Creek area Cathy could often be found at people’s doorsteps discussing the Bible, as a Jehovah’s Witness she loved to share the grand hope that God has for Man’s future. Another highlight in January of this year was being able to travel to Mazatlan Mexico to attend the wedding of her Grandson Devon Crull to Ana.
Below are some comments from a close friend; Our Most beloved Catherine, as we called her “Cathy.”
Cathy was a wonderful and sweet person with a big heart. She had a talent to make people laugh. What made her happy was a house full of people and laughter. Cathy was sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, put the others ahead of her and was generous. Cathy always found comforting words to say but never a complaint about herself. Cathy was a very caring, patient and devoted mother who always considered others and gave her all. She loved animals and treated them with kindness but what was special about her is, Cathy loved people and used every opportunity to give people comfort from God’s word because she knew that this was the only real hope and solution for mankind’s problems. Cathy will be greatly missed and leaves a void in our lives but it will only be for a short while because we will embrace Cathy and Kevin and others soon in a beautiful new World here on the Earth that Jehovah our wonderful Father in Heaven will prepare for us.
Catherine fell asleep in death June 6/2015 (John 11:11-14). A funeral was held for Catherine on June 17 and she was buried at the Lookout Public Cemetery on Montserrat West Indies. Though she will be missed greatly, her friends and family wait for the day when we will see her and others resurrected back to life once more in the coming paradise (Acts 24:15). The family and relatives of Catherine Graham wish to express their sincere thanks and gratitude to all who provided and have continued to provide support and encouragement during this difficult time. The outpouring of your warm and loving kindness will never be forgotten. May Jehovah bless you all – Numbers 6:24-26

Eileen was born in 1920, on a farm north of Calgary, the middle child of three girls born to Lila and Walter Slack. Her early life gave Eileen her love of hard work, animals, and the great outdoors. Later, she was joined by two younger brothers and the family moved to the big city of Calgary. It was there, when Eileen was waitressing in the Chrystal Café, she met and fell in love with a handsome young soldier named Bob Lauder. They married in 1940 and were lured to Dawson Creek during the building of the Alaska Highway, where their family ran dray wagons. After the highway was built, they left the north to farm in the Huxley area. In 1949 Bob and Eileen welcomed their son
Vern and their family was complete. In 1957 they returned to Dawson Creek and in 1963 they realized their dream and bought
their farm in Arras. They built a house and a barn on the property and it became their home for over 30 years. Eileen’s kitchen soon became the centre of the community. You never went to visit that someone didn’t drop by for co ee.
Eileen loved children and everyone knows that she had a magic touch that could settle a fussy baby or distract a misbehaving toddler. She never forgot how to play and make believe.
Over the years Eileen touched many people’s lives. She made many friends wherever she went; at work, through Eastern Star and through her church. She loved to travel and had the capacity to include everyone, love everyone, and make them feel like part of a big family.
Eileen is predeceased by her mother and father, Lila Hunter and Walter Slack, husband Robert Lauder, sister Bella (Joe) Spooner, and brothers Bill (Vicky) Hunter andBud (Betty) Hunter. She is survived by her son Vern (Echo) Lauder, grandsons Burke andBrett (Leanne) Lauder, great grandchildren Bryson, Jamin, Neala and Evon Lauder,Dianne (Brian Ash) Lauder, sister Connie Kirkby and numerous nieces and nephews andfriends who loved and admired her.
A Celebration of Life service was held Wednesday, July 8, 2015 atBergeron’s Funeral Chapel, Dawson Creek, British Columbia, o ciated by Pastor Tim Johnson.
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Eileen may be made by donation toSt. Mark’s Anglican Church, 1029 – 103rd Avenue, Dawson Creek, British Columbia V1G 2G6
Arrangements were entrusted to Bergeron Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd.
