IHYC Junior Sailing Mission Statement

The mission of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program is to promote interest in sailing through education and competition while developing sportsmanship, seamanship, self-discipline, self-reliance and a respect for nature and fellow sailors. The goal is to develop in each child an appreciation and love of sailing and confidence in his or her abilities.

The Indian Harbor Junior Yacht Club Sailing Program will launch its 91st year on June 23, 2014. Supported by the entire membership of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club, the program is intended to introduce young people to the enjoyment and disciplines of sailing, and to provide the instruction and opportunity necessary to refine sailing and racing skills.

Open to non-members as well as member children, the program spans eight weeks during the summer. Seamanship, proper respect for the vagaries of the sea, racing prowess, big boat experience, and the pleasures derived from just messing about in boats are the goals of the program. There is daily instruction on the water, and in the classroom by the instructors, as well as seminars conducted by outside noted yachtsmen.

Competitive racing, although not a priority for everyone, is encouraged for those who want to test their skills against other junior sailors racing on Long Island Sound.

This program is open to any child who qualifies and has a desire to seek the wonder, the challenge, and the risk of the wind, the sea, and sail.

Curriculum

Our curriculum supporting the mission of the Junior Sailing Program is based on the US Sailing small boat instruction scheme. All our instructors are US Sailing certified. Skills will be taught in a sequential and logical way from rigging and basic boat handling to navigation, racing and advanced seamanship.

Parents or guardians accept responsibility for any damage or loss of property that occurs while their child is steering a boat, or other action of their child, during IHYC Junior Sailing activities. The Chair of the Junior Committee in consultation with the IHYC Junior Sailing Director, Head Instructor and Instructors will review any incident in which damage occurs and determine who is financially responsible.

A swim check will be administered during the first few days of the program. No one will be permitted to sail without first passing this basic requirement. Rainy day activities are organized by the Instructors on shore so that the Program continues rain or shine.

Boats

The JSA approved Optimist (Opti), Laser Radial, Laser, and Club 420 are used at the Club, and in most racing with other clubs. All boats have centerboards, and flotation, and can be easily righted after a capsize. Junior sailors are expected to maintain their own boats and equipment.

Optimist Recommended for Ages 8 to 15. Single-handed. Simple one sail rig. Eight feet long, weighs 75 lbs., and is easily lifted by two young children. An excellent beginner's boat as well as a highly competitive racing dinghy. The most widely-used junior boat in the world.

IHJYC runs three levels of Optimist instruction:

Opti 1, for beginning Opti sailors introduces key concepts for rigging and sailing the boat, and introduces sailors to the rules and skills necessary for racing prowess Opti 1 is recommended for sailors 8 years and older, but is open to sailors as young as 6 or 7 with the appropriate skill level and enthusiasm;Opti 2, for more experienced Opti sailors, focuses more on the skills

4

necessary to develop the boat speed and tactical awareness to be a successful beginning Opti racer.

Opti Race, for expert Opti sailors focuses full time on the skills necessary to win high-level Opti races and regattas and focuses on preparing sailors for local, regional and international regattas.

Laser Recommended for age 14+. Minimum weight: 130 lbs. One skipper, one sail, high performance boat for the older advanced sailor. Extremely competitive and popular.

Laser Radial Recommended for age 14+. Minimum weight: 110 lbs. One skipper, one sail, same boat as Laser, high performance for lighter advanced sailors. The sail is shorter and smaller in size than the original Laser. Extremely competitive and popular.

Club 420 Recommended for age 14+. The Club 420 is an advanced racing boat with a main, jib and spinnaker. One skipper, one crew, used by experienced sailors who can meet the demand of highly skilled teamwork in sailing and racing. Requires a combined crew weight of 220 pounds. This boat is very popular for collegiate racing and team sailing.

Our beginner 420 program, which is open to experienced sailors who are younger than age 14, or who have less extensive sailing experience than other 420 sailors. The program introduced sailors to the 420 boat without the use of a spinnaker or trapeze, so sailors can concentrate on basic boat handling before progressing to the more advanced aspects of 420 racing.

functions, but are not to use the club facilities outside of the Junior Program, unless accompanied by a member of Indian Harbor. Similarly, no junior sailor is permitted in the main clubhouse at any time unless accompanied by an adult member of Indian Harbor.

If your junior sailor is sailing a two-handed boat (the 420), the courtesy of proper, advance notification to your boat partner is expected. The successful reshuffling of two-handed boat sailors in the absence of partners, is our goal, but cannot be guaranteed and advanced notice is highly recommended and appreciated.

What Each Sailor Must Bring

A Good Attitude and Enthusiasm for Sailing. US Coast Guard approved life jacket with whistle attached. Landfall Navigation in

Stamford has numerous appropriate models. Please ask us if you have any questions about what is appropriate, we are happy to discuss anytime. Comfort is important because sailors will not be allowed on the dock unless they are wearing a PFD. Buy a good quality, well-fitting PFD and label it with permanent marker. Keep PFD in good condition by rinsing with fresh water after each use. Secure whistle by short cord. Whistles are mandatory. No sailor will be allowed on the water at IHYC or any other club without one.

Foul weather gear and a change of clothes. Contact with the water is inevitable so everyone needs some dry clothes on hand. A rain jacket will fill the bill for foul weather gear.

Hat, sunglasses and sun block. It is important that everyone to protect their skin from the sun. It is parents’ responsibility to apply sunscreen to younger children or to have older children apply water-resistant sunscreen before arriving at sailing.

Suitable footwear - non-skid, rubber soled shoes or sandals. Topsiders, Tevas and Aqua socks are popular. Deck contour Tevas have the best grip. Foot gear should stay in place when in the water. Flip flops and bare feet are not acceptable footwear.

Water bottle - A refillable plastic bottle will do, but a Nalgene bottle is preferred. Junior sailors should be encouraged by parents to keep water on hand, refilling when necessary from water hose or water cooler.

Lunch - Packed in a cooler with frozen ice pack (for full day participants only). Label Equipment - All equipment must be labeled with junior sailor’s name.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are available from any IHYC Sailing Instructor. Lessons can be scheduled with the Head Instructor by email or phone requesting a specific instructor or an instructor will be assigned based on availability. Lessons can be taken after 5:15pm on weekdays or on the weekends. Private lessons are a great way for sailors to accelerate their learning curve or to make up missed time on the water after going away on vacation.

Parent Involvement/Information

Please understand junior sailing is parent intensive. We will strive to keep you informed about upcoming events, weekly progressions, and what is going on in general. Please check the Junior Sailing web site regularly for updates. Regatta scheduling will be done in advance, to the extent it is possible, so notification of vacation schedules is greatly appreciated.

Regular Communication: We will try to communicate all important information in two ways: by email to parents and by posting on the Junior website. www.indianharboryc.com.assn.la. Please email the Program chair at [email protected] or the Head Instructor at with any questions or input.

Communicating Concerns: Any serious parental concerns/complaints should be voiced directly to the Junior Sailing Program Chair. He/She would then handle the issue through the appropriate channels and report back to the parent. The Sailing Instructors report to the Head Instructor, and through him/her to the Junior Sailing Director and the Junior Sailing Chairs. They do not report to each individual parent. The Sailing Instructors will try to be available to discuss specific questions on individual sailors at the end of the day, but, please email us in advance so that we can schedule a mutually convenient time.  Please respect the Instructors’ lunch hour as that is their only break during the day and an important planning time for them.

The Junior Sailing Director and Head Instructor will be available at times in the Jr. Clubhouse.  They will do their best to respond to any messages by email or phone on a same day basis. Please contact the Junior Sailing Chair, if you cannot reach the Program Director or Head Instructor and have an urgent need.

Parent of the Day

During the morning hours, 9am-12pm, there will be a Parent of the Day (POD) on duty. The Parent of the Day will be on hand to help when needed and be available in the event of an emergency. The Parent of the Day will receive a written copy of the Emergency Procedure and a hand held radio. The Parent of the Day program is a great help to the instructors and it is a fun way for the parents to see what goes on at sailing! Each Opti parent is asked to volunteer for one or two mornings during the summer session. The Parent of the Day must remain on the grounds until all Opti sailors have been picked up.

Sign up may be done at the Orientation Meeting on June 1, 2014 or at the Commissioning on June 22nd. Once a final schedule is posted, changes to the schedule must be arranged by the parent wishing to change by swapping dates with another parent. Please take your commitment seriously as it affects the safety of all the junior sailors.

Policies Concerning Leaving the Club Grounds

IHYC maintains a Closed Campus Policy for the Junior Sailing Program. All-day race team sailors are expected to stay on grounds from the beginning of the day until the end, unless attending or traveling to an away regatta. If driving junior sailors need to leave the property during the program, they should give a written permission slip to the Junior Sailing Director/Head Instructor on the day of their departure. All day program sailors or half day program sailors staying for full day special events are required to bring their own Lunches.

Instructors are not permitted to transport junior sailors or their sailboats. Parents must make their own arrangements for their children and boats to get to and from regattas. If instructor support is required for boat loading, boats must be loaded during program hours or alternative arrangements must be made directly with instructors and overtime must be paid directly by the junior sailing parent. For those JSA regattas designated by the Junior Committee in which we participate, instructors will be at the host club to help with registration, rigging and de-rigging, and coaching on the water. At most JSA regattas the instructors will be part of the safety boat fleet and may be stationed at a particular section of the racecourse. Their responsibility at that time is for the safety of all competitors in their assigned area. At those times their ability to coach individual sailors will be limited.

Racing and Regattas Calendar

In order to race successfully one must first be able to sail a boat well and enjoy doing it. There is a natural progression toward racing activities built into the program. Racing, within the class setting, provides an opportunity to test what one has learned and is used effectively to teach basic skills. When ready for it, racing can and should be fun. The head instructor will let you know when your child has demonstrated that he or she is ready to compete at a particular level (green fleet, Captain’s Cup, JSA, regional or beyond).

There are certain regattas, called “green fleet” regattas that are specifically for beginning Optimist sailors. Sailors can compete in no more than three of these regattas or are ineligible if they have placed in an open regatta at an event where there was no green fleet offered. In other Optimist regattas the fleet may be divided by age into white (10 and under), blue (11-12) and red (13-15) based on skipper’s age as of the first day of the regatta.

Throughout the summer Indian Harbor Yacht Club’s junior sailors will be invited to participate in a variety of regattas. IHYC instructors will be on hand at these JSA and sanctioned events and non-JSA events as designated by the Junior Committee and listed on the IHYC Junior web site. The instructors will assist in registration, be on the water to assist as necessary and coach when possible before or after races. Their responsibility is to safety first and then to coaching. Transportation of children and their boats to and from regattas is the parents’ responsibility.

9

Page 10: The mission of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club Junior Sailing ...files.leagueathletics.com/Text/Documents/12108/48149.docx · Web viewIndian Harbor Junior Yacht Club. Junior Sailing

Sailors can also attend a full calendar of regattas outside those listed on the 2012 IHYC Junior Sailing Regatta Calendar at their own discretion and with their parents’ supervision. In these cases, IHYC instructors will not be available to accompany the junior sailors, IHYC will not send instructor safety boats or be responsible for registration. Arrangements should be made directly with the regatta organizers. Interested junior sailors should rely on boat class, organization or event web sites for full information. Participation is up to the individual sailor and his/her parents as befits his/her level of expertise and interest.

Big Boat Program

The Junior Big Boat Sailing Program is an opportunity for teens to sail with an instructor, on 35 - 45 foot well – outfitted blue-water racing sailboats. The Big Boat Program allows new sailors to learn the ropes on a big boat platform – and allows experienced junior sailors to apply their small boat sailing skills to a new challenge.

The Big Boat Program highlights fun, social and teamwork. With skills learned in the Big Boat Program, teens can be valuable crew on cruising boats and club racers in addition to honing skills such as, GPS navigation, spinnaker pole jibing, helmsman ship, and advanced boat handling skills that prepares the participant to be a racing crew.

IHYC Junior Sailing is delighted, this year, again to be able to use the Beneteau First 40.7, Lapin. Lapin is a fully fitted-out and seasoned blue-water racing boat with award winning finishes in the Newport/Bermuda Race, Block Island Race, Edlu and other distance races to her credit.

The program prepares juniors  for the Port Washington Twilight Regatta, the Dorade and Beach Point Overnight.

Sailors who wish to participate in the Big Boat Program should register at www.indianharboryc.com.assn.la, they must have a JSA age of 14 (as of December 31, 2014). In order to be considered for race participation the following will be mandatory:

Navigation Land Based Course on Friday mornings at IHYC. Take JSA Navigation and Seamanship exams. Attend “Safety and Sea”.

Attend practices (Tuesday evenings 6.00pm - 9.00pm) Other required practices will be scheduled at the start of the program.

Junior Big Boat Sailors will be encouraged to participate in Wednesday Night Twilight Racing on Lapin and other Club boats!

IHYC hopes to enter two boats in the JSA regatta events, but this of course depends on boat owner and sailor commitment.  Therefore there will need to be some team selection.  Team

DisciplineCode of Conduct 2013

Indian Harbor Yacht Club Junior Program sailors represent IHYC both inside and outside of program hours and both when on or off IHYC property.

Each sailor will respect and follow the rules for safety on and around the water, including the wearing of personal flotation devices at all times while on the water and the provision of assistance to other sailors when such assistance can safely be provided.

Each sailor has the responsibility to conduct himself or herself in a manner reflecting positively on IHYC while on club grounds, in the community and at regattas. Sailors are reminded that sailing and participation in the program is a privilege and not a right.

The way in which a sailor conducts himself or herself in our community and at other clubs is very important to us.

All Sailors are expected to abide by this Code of Conduct and failure to comply will result in loss of regatta privileges and suspension or removal from the program.

All Sailors and Parents must sign and agree to this Code of Conduct prior to participation in the program.

Sailors Must:

Act at all times in a manner consistent with safe practices on and around the water Exhibit fair play and good sportsmanship at all times. Respect and follow directions of Sailing Instructors at all times, whether on shore or on

Refrain from fighting (verbally or physically). Respect the rights and property of others. Not use or possess illegal drugs/alcohol/tobacco or other items such as fireworks,

paintball guns etc. Bringing any of these to the program will result in immediate suspension of the sailor under paragraph 2 below.

It is the policy of the IHYC Junior Sailing Program not to penalize any sailor who attempts to abide by this Code of Conduct in a situation not of their own making or that is unavoidable. The Junior Sailing Program Director is authorized to and will assess any alleged violation and provide enforcement of this Code of Conduct when and where appropriate. In cases of a violation of this Code of Conduct, the following course of action will be followed:

1. If a violation of this code of conduct is sufficiently serious as to make it necessary to remove a sailor from program activities on a given day, that sailor will be sent home as

soon as practicable. This determination will be made by the Program Chair and the Junior Sailing Program Director.

2. Any subsequent violation that is determined to be sufficiently serious as to remove a sailor from program activities for a given day shall result in that sailor being sent home and being suspended for the following five program days. Following such a determination, the Program Chair and Junior Sailing Program Director will be available for a meeting with the sailor’s parents regarding the conduct that gave rise to the suspension.

3. A third violation of similar seriousness shall result in the sailor being dismissed from the program with no refund or pro-ration of program fees.

Class Associations

It is highly recommended that every sailor join the class association for the boat he or she will be sailing as well as the US Sailing Association. Class membership is required if the junior sailor is participating in regattas. Class associations promote interest in the class, define rules specific to your boat and keep you informed about developments in the class. You will receive a newsletter from the class and often a sticker for your boat.
