TRANSCRIPT
The last decade has witnessed asteady growth in diseases associatedwith mitochondria. Mitochondrialdysfunction has been found in diseases as diverse as cancer, migraine, infertility, diabetes, heartdiseases, blindness, deafness, kidneydisease, liver disease, stroke and thetoxicity of HIV drugs. Mitochondrialdysfunction is also associated withaging and neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s andAlzheimer’s dementia. Thus mitochondriaappear to be the central players in many diseases that can affect any organ, at any age.

Keshav Singh, Ph.DFounder
Mitochondria Research Society
It will come as no surprise, that the field of mitochondria is one of the fastest growing disci-plines in biomedicine. In the past decade morethan 26,000 articles on mitochondria werepublished in over 1,000 scientific journals, butstrangely enough there was, until recently, nosociety dedicated to the research into mitochon-dria. The MRS and our journal Mitochondrionprovides a platform for the research on basicscience of mitochondria, mitochondrial patho-
genesis, prevention, diagnosis andtreatment throughout the world. TheSociety fosters public education, train-ing and provides a platform for commu-nication and dissemination of knowl-edge among scientists, physicians and others interested in mitochondria. We conduct regular national and international scientific meetings onmitochondria. The society publishesMitochondrion; a bimonthly peer-reviewed research journal for `mito-chondriacs’, and by `mitochondriacs’working on different aspects of
mitochondria throughout theworld. The scope of this journal is broad, from reportingon the basic science of mitochondria in all model systems to reporting on pathology and clinical aspectsof mitochondrial diseases.Scientists receive a subscription to the journal aspart of their society member-ship. Non-scientist receive MitoMatters.

The Mitochondria Research Society (MRS) isa non-profit international organisation of sci-entists and physicians.
The purpose of MRS is to find a cure for mito-chondrial diseases by promoting research onbasic science of mitochondria, mitochondrialpathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treat-ment through out the world.
The Society fosters public education, trainingand provides a platform for communicationand dissemination of knowledge among sci-entists, physicians and others interested inmitochondria.
The Society conducts regular national andinternational scientific meetings on mitochon-dria.
The Society publishes an official journalnamed “Mitochondrion” and the newsletternamed “MitoMatters”.
