Naomi’s Loves: International Beads, Asian Antiquities & Tribal TreasuresMichaan’s presents the collection of Ms. Naomi Lindstrom
Naomi Lindstrom (1924-2014) was a collector of the purest sense. A longtime flight attendant for Pan Am, she traveled the world rubbing elbows with sheiks and presidents,
all the while collecting what she loved along the way. Her fifty years of collecting became a personal journal of sorts, a testament to a life of adventure, intellect and visual curiosity. Michaan’s Auctions is proud to present these objects on March 7, 2016, chronicling the love and life of Ms. Naomi Lindstrom, expressed in treasures found from around the globe.
What has been described as the most significant collection of world beads in the United States, international and ancient pieces from Naomi’s prized bead accumulation will be offered in over 290 lots. Beads composing necklaces and other curiosities are from over fifty noted origins, spanning a dizzying world list ranging America to Africa, Germany to Java and Mexico to Morocco to name a few. Virtually all are of her design, while remaining true to cultural heritage. Naomi’s bead collection counts amongst it some of the best quality Tibetan corals available and some with quite an interesting background story as well. Naomi had spent six months working with the Lowell Thomas Foundation side by side with the Dali Lama’s brother and sister to aid Tibetan refugees streaming into India escaping the uprising. During this time, numerous Tibetans sold their corals to raise funds to survive in their new environment. Naomi, compassionate to the plight of the refugees, bought many of their coral beads and also helped to facilitate additional buyers for them. Highlighting this category of her collection is a two-strand necklace of excellent antique red coral beads with an ornate gilded pendant centering a large red coral cabochon at an estimate of $20,000-30,000 (lot 4364).
Naomi’s Asian art collection was acquired with great care, very slowly and deliberately, and it showed. Both collectors and institutions noted the excellence of her collection, with the Asian Art Museum showcasing her pieces when they needed to impress high-end donors. Among the Asian works of art at sale is a specialty auction collection of figural sandstone pieces, reflecting the caliber of Naomi’s Asian carvings. Highlighting this grouping is a Khmer Angkor Wat style female deity of the 12th century at an estimate of $15,000-20,000 (lot 4094).
Over 80 lots of world tribal and ethnographic objects including numerous pre-Columbian pieces hold an offering of interest in an early 20th century
Toraja carved wood male Tau Tau figure at an estimate of $20,000-30,000 (lot 4171, pictured right). The expression upon the male’s
face is one of bewilderment, conveyed by wide bone set eyes with dilated wood pupils and a slight mouth. A swiveling stand mounts
the figure upon each leg around the area where the knees would reside, allowing for optimal appreciation of the object. The
Toraja, an ethnic group from the mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, had remained relatively un-touched by the outside world until the 1970s when the area became a hotbed of tourism in Indonesia, peaking in the 1990s.
Offered artworks from Naomi’s personal collection are to be presented in 31 lots. Just as her travels had amassed a variety of beads from around the globe, an international presence is evidenced in artists of American, Australian, French and Mexican heritage. The largest representation in the sale is found in pieces by Hawaiian John Chin Young in 17 lots. Highlighting this group is the abstract oil on canvas “Homage of Wang Wei” at an estimate of $2,500-3,500 (lot 4242). Joining the Young works at auction will be artists Jose Luis Cuevas, Oscar Edwards, Norman Ives, John Koenig, Fernand Leger, Georges Rouault, Madge Tennent, Charles W.
Bartlett, Jean Charlot and Nathan Oliveira.

Naomi Lindstrom (seated), circa 1950
Naomi began collecting beads in the late 1940’s when she worked for United Airlines. Her reasons were purely pragmatic at the time: her
spending money consisted of the $10 per diem she got from the airline, and beads were small, affordable, and easy to transport in a pocket or purse.
Here’s how it happened. Naomi’s innate curiosity about cultures lead her to an interest in Archaeology. Her interest in Archaeology lead her to begin frequenting dig sites whenever time and opportunity allowed. Once on site, she always befriended the diggers, the mostly local labor force hired to sift through the dirt and detritus in search of antiquities. At the time there was very little interest in beads in the archaeological world, so when Naomi asked the diggers what they had that they could sell, they quickly proffered pockets full of ancient beads, tiny treasures relegated to the back-burner by the world of academia. Naomi instantly fell in love, and that was the end of her per diem. (Her magnetic personality and Hollywood starlet looks guaranteed that she never went hungry because she spent her food money on beads!)
Before long Naomi was being invited to digs by the various Archaeologists she met on her travels, and her bead collection expanded its roots, for a good many years paid for with her $10 per diem. Soon she was seeking out bead dealers along her international flight routes, and paying whatever she could beyond her per diem.
She bought as many beads as she could in those early years, quickly gobbling knowledge about the cultures that made these understudied dabs of art, how those cultures used the beads, and what their spiritual significance was. She discovered that beads have a rich protective value, used by many cultures to ward off evil spirits. Naomi’s primary interest has always been the history of mankind, so when she learned that beads are also the earliest form of human art, and the earliest evidence for abstract thinking and the use of symbolism, her curiosity grew exponentially. She loved to point out that beads were mankind’s first adornment, worn even before clothing became a daily necessity. “Even before clothing!” she’d stress. When talking to Naomi about beads it was impossible to come away unaffected.
Over the years Naomi’s insatiable intellectual curiosity lead her to become quite an expert on these multi-faceted ancient treasures. She began creating necklaces, which she designed bead-by-bead on fishing line and then had professionally strung by local artist Jamey D. Allen. She always stayed true to the cultural integrity and context of the country of origin of the beads she chose, and to the era from which the beads were born.
She also began lecturing, invited to speak on the history of beads by various museums and bead societies around the world, including the Bead Society of Great Britain in 1999. Over her 50 years of traveling, Naomi Lindstrom’s collection became one of the most compre-hensive and noteworthy private collections of ancient beads in the country, spanning more than 5,000 years of bead history, and covering almost every continent. The fact that the treasures gathered during her lifetime of collecting are now available for sale truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportu-nity for bead collectors everywhere.

Naomi has some of the best quality ancient Tibetan coral available, and the story of its acquisition is no less unique than the woman herself.
Turn the clock back to March of 1959, the outset of the Tibetan uprising. The Dalai Lama was forced to flee Tibet, crossing into India with the help of the CIA’s Special Activities Division. At about the same time, Naomi was the flight attendant assigned to first class on a flight carrying Lowell Thomas, the famed journalist and filmmaker, to India. Thomas was the first person to film the Dalai Lama in Tibet, and was instrumental in efforts to aid the Dali Lama and his retinue as they fled their native land. During the flight Naomi entertained Mr. Thomas by describing her adventures shop-ping for antiquities around the globe. She laughingly boasted that she could get the best price for anything, and talked of her ability to shop in the most seemingly inaccessible places.
Thomas, impressed by her joie de vivre, resourcefulness, and infec-tious laugh, began questioning her further. By the end of the flight he was convinced he’d found a treasure.
The following morning he called the president of Pan American Air-ways, Juan Tripp, a personal friend, and asked for Naomi’s services for the next six months. It seems the Lowell Thomas Foundation was busily building housing for the thousands of Tibetan refugees streaming into India to escape the uprising. Mr. Thomas needed someone who could negotiate the best prices for building supplies, and then arrange their delivery to his building sites in Daramsala. Guess whom he chose?
Mr. Tripp said he would pay Naomi’s salary for six months and allow her to use the time working for Mr. Thomas’s foundation in India. Naomi was flown to Daramsala almost immediately. She spent the next six months working side by side with the Dali Lama’s brother and sister, bartering for and procuring building supplies to house the fleeing Tibetans.
As she encountered the refugees and spoke to them of their plight, she fell in love with the people and their culture of pacifism and gentleness. At the time, many of the Tibetans were selling their cor-al, needing money to survive in their new surroundings. They asked Naomi if she could help. Coral was extremely important to the Tibetans, used for both personal adornment and as a way to store wealth. But their love of this deep red substance went deeper than that. To the Tibetans coral represented life. It’s traditional in Tibetan families to give each daughter a strand of good coral when she leaves home. It represents family, heritage, and a prosperous life to come.
The Tibetans were leaving their native country with their coral in tow, most often worn as jewelry. Naomi, feeling sorry for the refugees and wanting to help them in their plight to survive, bought many coral beads herself, and helped facilitate the sale of coral to buyers elsewhere. Uncharacteristically, she always paid full price, and insisted that the buyers she found did the same. It was probably the only time in her life that she did this!
By the end of her six months in Tibet she had spent her $10 per diem and a good portion of her salary on good coral beads. It was a win-win situation for everyone, and Naomi died with some of the most beautiful coral jewelry available, much of it made from the beads she collected during her time with the refugees.

In addition to all remedies available in law, to MA and to the Consignor, the Buyer shall be liable for the entire Purchase price. IN ALL INSTANCES, YOU MUST GIVE WRITTEN NOTICE TO US WITHIN 30 DAYS OF THE SALE OF THE PROPERTY, SETTING FORTH THE BASIS FOR YOUR CLAIM AND, AT YOUR SOLE EXPENSE AND RISK, RETURN THE PROPERTY IN QUESTION TO MA WITHIN SEVEN (7) DAYS AFTER NOTICE IS GIVEN AND IN THE SAME CONDITION AS WHEN SOLD. Upon review of the claim and the property, if we are satisfied with the bases for your claim and the property is in the same condition it was in when sold, MA will rescind the sale and return to you the Purchase price, unless we have already remitted funds to the Consignor. In that event, and at MA’s sole discretion, MA shall either pay you as provided above, or shall pay you only that portion of the Purchase price retained by us (the Seller’s commission, the buyer’s premium and any sales taxes collected) and on your behalf make demand on the Consignor for the balance and upon receipt of the funds remit same to you. Should the Consignor refuse to return the funds to you or to MA, we shall disclose the Consignor’s identity and assign to you any and all rights MA may have against the Consignor. Any and all liability MA may have as agent for the Consignor shall thereupon terminate.BUYER EXPRESSLY UNDERSTANDS AND AGREES THAT MA SHALL HAVE NO OTHER LIABILITY TO THE BUYER EXCEPT FOR THE RETURN OF THE PURCHASE PRICE AND THAT IN NO EVENT SHALL MA BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR COMPENSATORY DAMAGES OR LOSS OF PROFIT OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY.

Techniques like bleaching, dying and impregnation are just a few techniques known today. These treat-ments are not detectable using standard gemological procedures. Not all are permanent. Prospective buy-ers are therefore reminded that unless otherwise noted in the description(s),1 it must be assumed that some form of enhancement may have been used.

PROPERTY MADE FROM OR CONTAINING MATERIALS FROM ENDANGERED OR PROTECTED SPECIESProperty that contains any percentage of material made or potentially made from endangered and/or other protected species of wildlife are, as a courtesy, marked in the catalogue with the symbol “ * ”. Michaan’s Auctions does not accept any responsibili-ty or liability for failing to mark such lots. Such material includes, but is not limited to, ivory, tortoise shell, crocodile skin, whalebone, rhinoceros horn, some species of coral and certain woods.
Prospective buyers are advised that several coun-tries completely prohibit importation of property made, all or in part, of proscribed materials. Some countries require special permits, such as a CITES permit, from the relevant regulating authority in the
78
countries of exportation and importation as well. Potential buyers intending to import the property into another country should be familiar with the rel-evant customs laws and regulations prior to bidding on property containing wildlife material. Regulations may vary as the U.S. prohibits importation of articles containing material(s) from species it has designated endangered or threatened if the articles are less than 100 years old.
It shall be the potential buyer’s sole responsibili-ty to research and satisfy the requirements of any laws and regulations that apply to the import and export of property as described in the aforementioned paragraphs. Prospective buy-ers must also note that the inability or delay in obtaining permits, licenses or other permissions to import or export property containing poten-tially regulated wildlife material will not consti-tute a basis for rescission or cancellation of the sale of said property or the delay in payment of purchased items in accordance with the Conditions of Sale.
