President’s Message November 2009

My, how busy November is! The Flower Show and House & Garden Tour committees are back in full swing, Hospitality has had its first opportu-nity to shine, and we’ve begun a wonderful set of programs.

With all this fervent activity, I wanted to take the time to thank all of you who worked over the summer preparing for this year’s events. Much was accomplished, including finding significant sponsors for the House & Gar-den Tour, writing the Flower Show schedule, and getting great PR in the Naples Daily News.

For those who stay in Naples over the summer, we’re also becoming more of a year-round club, with two summer luncheon flower shows. Thank you to all who arranged and participated in those events.

We are very much a working and educational club, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that the work is for the benefit of the community and the edu-cation is supposed to be fun. As we enter the holiday season, please take time to sustain your Garden Club friendships and nurture new relation-ships. Happy Thanksgiving!

Your Board of Directors voted by email this summer and reiterated its vote at the Octo-ber board meeting “ to establish a policy of a $5.00 guest fee at all of our membership meetings.” This will help to defray the cost of our speakers. Please register your guest when you arrive. Thank you.

Flower Show 2010

The schedule for our upcom-ing show ‘Wonder Women’ was dis-tributed at the November 9th meet-ing. Please start thinking about your horticulture and design entries and contact the consultant for the class you are interested in if you have questions. March 27th and 28th will be here sooner than we think.

We also have a new section, open to all members, which will not be judged. Creative arts by any mem-ber are welcome and will become part of the Creative Women exhibit. Judy Brzoska is the person to contact with questions and she will be happy to send you a form to submit prior to the show. She and her committee would like to know what you will be displaying by March 15 so start painting, sewing, quilting, photo-graphing, sketching or creating any art that you wish.

I look forward to the show and I hope that you will take advan-tage of the workshops and classes that will prepare us all to present another spectacular show. We are going to ‘strut our stuff’ and apply for some awards, too.

Kathleen Hawryluk, Chairman

General Meeting Minutes, November 9, 2009 At the Moorings Presbyterian Church

President Liz Chehayl called the meeting to order. Chaplain, Carol Conant gave the invocation and led the Pledge of Allegiance. The minutes of the April 06, 2009 meeting were published in Trowel Prints; Liz asked if there were any corrections or additions. There were none and the minutes stand approved. Liz made several committee announcements: Barbara Sampson, Yearbook Chair, has the new Yearbook. Pick up your copy. Barbara Sampson, Luncheons/Parties, is accepting reservations for our Christmas luncheon to be held December 11th at Wyndemere C.C. The cost is $30. Design Workshops are listed in Trowel Prints Barbara Ricci, Horticulture Chair has planned a tour of the newly opened Naples Botanical Gardens for November 30th . Billie Stevens has the 2010 “Visions of Beauty” calendar on sale for $6.00 Activity Tables have been set up in the adjoining room. Please review them and sign up. Liz announced that Catherine Ware had been nominated and approved by the Board as Chairman of the Nominating Committee. As required by our by laws, she asked for nominations from the floor for two committee members. Gail Pica nomi-nated Arlette Bradley and Carol Conant nominated Judy Lewis for the positions. Both nominations were affirmed. Flower Show - Chairman Kathleen Hawryluk asked that members pick up their schedules and that everyone volunteer for at least one job. (Other Flower Show information at left). House and Garden Tour- Linda Brown, announced that the House and Garden Tour will be held on February 6th. Her committee has been working hard to iden-tify participants for the event. She advised that as a result of this major fund raiser, the Naples Garden Club has given more than $500,000 back to the community through sponsored projects and scholarships. She explained that it takes the entire Club to achieve this event asked that all members sign up as a volunteer. Membership – Arlette Bradley introduced two new provisionals to the audi-ence, Dusti Beaubien and Barb Schroeder. We have 18 provisionals. As there were no further committee reports, Sondra Quinn, introduced our speaker, Raymond Jungles, renowned landscape architect and author, who de-signed the Brazilian Garden at the newly reopened Naples Botanical Gardens. Mr. Jungles studied at the University of Florida where he earned his degree from the landscape architect program. After graduation, he lived in Brazil where he worked under the guidance of Robert Burle Marx who is considered the “Father of Modern Landscape Architecture.” Mr. Jungles’ beautiful slide presentation captivated the audience both with its variety of subject and its fullness of images. He selected for his presentation colorful pictures of 22 different projects from his various accomplishments in both residential and commercial settings. The audience was completely drawn along on his retrospective. After a brief question and answer session, he signed copies of his newest book, ”The Colors of Nature: Subtropical Gardens.”

As there was no unfinished or new business, the President adjourned the meeting and invited everyone to enjoy the refreshments provided by Joan LaRuffa and her committee led this month by Susie Yoder featuring a design by Melinda Earle. Attendance: actives 92, provisionals 18, guests 45 for a total of 155. Diane Green, Recording Secretary

How much water will a dollar

get you? It depends on the water.

The answer is 2.2 gallons

for the water truck driving around town,

Even though I pay for it in 5-gallon jugs

upfront in advance

The grocery store has plenty of

brands of water on its shelves, from

which – on occasion – I’ve been known to

indulge in a high-end imported bottle

(with carbonation).

A dollar would only get me 12

ounces of that stuff, better known

as one cola can.

How about if I were a wine drinker?

At ten dollars per three-quarters liter

bottle, a dollar would put me on the mar-

ket for 5 tablespoons.

That’s barely a sip!

Kudos to the terrific November

Hospitality Committee for

your delicious contributions and

help. Special mention to Susie

Yoder , head hostess, Melinda

Earle for her tropical arrangement

and the last minute volunteers as

the anticipated turnout

grew! Gracias to Arlette Bradley,

Audrey Hennessey, Sally Melvin,

Gail Pica, and Diane Green.

Have you seen this bush around Naples? Did

you wonder what it is? And how it can bloom

so long? It is a Mussaenda phillippica

‘Aurorae’. Salmon Mussaenda. It blooms

from May through November. The catch is

that it then is bare of any leaves until spring.

It is completely decidous. It is spectacular

but only for half of the year.
