Overview
The NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management is a new qualification, successfully piloted in 2008 with over 200 candidates in the UK and overseas, which is now being launched as part of the NEBOSH qualification portfolio Nebosh Environmental Management Course is mapped against the existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Environmental Management (‘Manage Environmental Performance’) originated by the Management Charter Initiative (MCI) in 1998. It also reflects the requirements for Environmental Management Systems (EMS) set out in British Standard ISO 14001 and environmental standard BS 8555 which is relevant to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The course has two units, each of which is assessed separately; Unit NEC1 (Management and control of environmental hazards) consists of nine syllabus elements assessed by one written examination. Unit NEC2 (Environmental practical application) has no additional syllabus content but is designed to test application of the knowledge and understanding acquired from the NEC1 syllabus, through a workplace-based practical assessment.

Course Outcome
For each unit successfully completed, candidates will receive a Unit Certificate from NEBOSH denoting their achievement. On successful completion of both units, the NEBOSH National Certificate in Environmental Management will be awarded.
Course Objective
The qualification focuses on assessing environmental management systems with reference
to UK legislation and is intended to provides a sound basis for progression onto the NEBOSH National Diploma in Environmental Management (Level 6). The qualification will benefit companies in all industry sectors who are seeking to implement effective environmental management systems and to provide line managers with a sound understanding of the principles of managing environmental risk.
