The Parish Letter

Dear Friends

As the clocks change and we move into November, it

feels really like autumn now and the year is drawing to a close. This is a time when we do a lot of remembering in

Church. It begins with celebrating All Saints’ Day,

remembering those Christians whose love for God led

them to do extraordinary things for Him. Following very closely is ‘All Souls’, when we remember our own loved

ones departed. Then, of course, comes Remembrance

Sunday, when we remember those who lost their lives in wars. Looking back over nearly forty years of marking

Remembrance Sunday, it seems to me that it has become

more significant in recent years, with more people attending, and with more powerful feelings attached to it.

I think this is due partly to some of the ‘big’ anniversaries

of recent years, seventy years since VE and VJ day,

seventy-five years since the Battle of Britain, and a hundred years since many of the events of World War I,

but also due to so many families being affected once

again by the deaths of young soldiers in places like Afghanistan and Iraq. It has brought home to us again the

tragedy of war and the wasteful loss of life.

In the Church of England’s book of daily prayers there are suggestions for subjects to pray about each morning and

evening. It proposes that Christians should pray for peace

every evening. This seems to me to be very important

because so much else depends on peace. It is not just the avoidance of death and injury, but also the damage to areas

of land, the drain on economic growth, and the distraction

from working at problems like poverty or disease, etc. etc. So, for everyone who believes that praying has value I

commend daily prayer for peace - not only between nations

but between different faiths, different communities, different families and even within communities, families

and individuals - praying for an inner peace for those who

are troubled.

But, of course, as well as praying we need to work at building peace. We need to do this within the communities

to which we belong and in our own relationships. Every

small act of peace-making we can do will help to make the world a more peaceful place and may act as an example and

encouragement to others. So let’s not just remember, let’s

do something. David Jessett

More ‘Music and Meditation’, or time to reflect?

In November, we are once again offering opportunities for people to enjoy the tranquillity of our churches. The prayerful atmosphere of the buildings is enhanced by candlelight and appropriate music. St Peter’s, Barford, will be

open from 8.00pm to about 9.15pm on Tuesday, 24 November. Saint Leonard’s, Charlecote, will be open from 4.00pm

to 5.30pm on Wednesday, 25 November. No sermons, no hymns - just time to sit or move around quietly. Come for a

short while or the whole time. No charge. All welcome. Rev’d DJ

3Ps Discussion Group This month our discussion will relate to the book by David Wilkinson entitled: "When I pray, what does God do?"

David Wilkinson has a Doctorate in Physics, as well as in Theology, and he raises the question of whether our modern

understanding of the world makes it any easier to understand the way that God works in the world, and the times when he appears not to. There is no need to have read the book in order to join the discussion. Our approach is open-ended

and everyone's thoughtful contribution is welcome. The meeting will be held at 7.30pm in Charlecote Village Hall on

Wednesday, 25 November. SL

Hampton Lucy and Charlecote WI Kath Clarke welcomed members to their first meeting of the winter programme, when the speaker ,Tony

Hale, spoke about his life in radio. Starting his career with the BBC in 1973, he progressed over the years to

become a radio producer. He reminded us of many names from a bygone era, including ventriloquist Peter Brough and Archie Andrews - who had an easy job performing ventriloquism on the radio! Others included Peter Sellers and The

Oxbridge Boat Race commentator, John Snagg. So what could go wrong? Perhaps when, following her death, Sam Costa

paid tribute to the popular vocalist Alma Cogan by playing one of her greatest hits: “I’m in heaven”? That definitely prompted an apology to the listeners! The meeting closed with refreshments and social time for members. The Annual

General Meeting will take place on 4 November in Hampton Lucy Village Hall, when the Committee and President will

be elected for 2016. KCl

Wellesbourne & District Lions

I can’t believe that I am writing the November report already. It doesn’t seem five minutes since we were enjoying the last of the summer sun. Now we are in full swing, preparing for our annual Christmas floats,

sorting out the sleighs, and the routes that they will take this year. With all the new houses in the district,

there will have to be some changes to ensure that Santa can meet as many children as possible. This year we will be starting on Monday, 7 December, and our last evening will be Monday, 21 December. Please look out for next month’s

news and I will give you details of where exactly we shall be on each evening. On the evening of Saturday, 26

September, the Lions hosted a Bingo Night in Wellesbourne Village Hall. It was a great success and everybody who attended had a good time. We are currently discussing the possibility of holding some more bingo sessions, so watch

this space!! It was not only great fun, but we raised the fantastic sum of £150 which we will be sending to the charity

‘Prostate Cancer UK’ - a non-profit charity raising awareness, providing information and support, and funding research

into a disease that affects about one in eight men at some time during their lives. AS

Roof Repairs at St Nicholas’ Church, Loxley The current phase of roof repairs at St Nicholas’ Church was

completed successfully during the summer. The Loxley

Parochial Church Council would like to thank everyone who generously donated to the Appeal Fund, and supported the

various fund-raising activities. These events were both

enjoyable and very successful, and included the Strawberry

Fayre, a supper party at Loxley Hall, a Drive Sale, and a concert in the church. In addition, a huge “thank you” goes to

all those who worked so hard to promote the appeal, and who

made all of the events such a great success. WG

Loxley WI On Thursday, 7 October, we had another enjoyable evening under the guidance of Gill Dancer, working

hard for three hours or more and going through at least a dozen stages to produce an attractive spray of

flowers in cold porcelain. These will, no doubt, take pride of place in our Christmas decorations. Our next meeting will be on 12 November. It will be our Annual General Meeting, held in Loxley School, starting at 7.30pm. The future of

our WI will be discussed. We shall also hear a short talk by our local WI Link Officer. The evening will end with

refreshments provided by the members. MCl

Charlecote Park Some unusually chilly nights in early autumn have

intensified the seasonal colours, and the parkland foliage has been absolutely glorious this year. The joy

of kicking through fallen leaves really shouldn’t just be

left to children! During the winter months the house has

fewer days for visiting so that the annual deep-clean can take place, but we shall be running guided tours so

that visitors can see what goes on. Plans for the

Christmas season are being finalised at the time of writing and, this year, the yuletide decorations will

follow the theme of the 1842 version of ‘The Twelve

Days of Christmas’. As well as being available for children to book to visit him whilst he is at Charlecote

Park, Father Christmas has found space in his busy schedule to pop in for a few extra days, when children will be able

to enjoy story-telling sessions and deliver their letters to him personally. Please check the website to find out what’s

happening when, and for details of how to book to see Father Christmas. He always sells out, so don’t delay! The National Trust is rolling out new websites for all properties on 9 November - it will be more mobile/tablet friendly and

easier to navigate, but please bear with us if there are any glitches in the first day or two. MGl
