FROM THE MINISTER

Above is a well known optical illusion – Do you see a rabbit or a duck? Over the last month one of the things that we have been exploring at Pentref – is the idea of images and in particular images of God. What kind of picture do you have in your mind when you think about God?

Jesus said ‘That whoever has seen me has seen the Father’. For the Christian the image that we have in our minds when we speak of God is the image of Jesus. What is the image of Jesus that you have? These are important questions because if we start off with the wrong image in our minds – then instead of our imaginations leading us into a closer

relationship with God – we will find the distorted image gives us a wrong idea of God. It is interesting when you look at the optical illusion that when you see the duck it becomes more difficult to see the rabbit, the opposite is also true. A question for you to ponder: Does your image of God, does your image of Jesus help you or hinder you? Steve

Bible Study

On Tuesday mornings a group of us get

together to look at a particular part of the Bible. This is an informal gathering where all are encouraged to take part. We are not a bunch of academics debating the finer points of a text, but a group of people who want to hear what God has got to say to us through His word.

In June we will be continuing to look at the gospel of John. If you would like to come along we will be meeting on Tuesday 12

th & 26

th at 10:30am, in the Baptist Church hall.

A few of us go to lunch in Rhayader after the meeting. You would be more than welcome to join us. (2 courses for only £5.50)

The next Coffee Morning is on Wednesday June 6th We will supply the coffee and tea – the cakes and biscuits

and you can come along to supply the good-humoured company.

No charge but donations gratefully received in aid of: The local branch of the Samaritans

THE MONTH AT PENTREF – Clive Barrett The month at Pentref started with the Coffee Morning, which was very well attended.

On the first Sunday Rev Steve led the morning service, which was a time to learn

more and celebrate the work of The Leprosy Mission. In the evening he continued his

studies in Psalm 119, this being the same theme at the same time on the second and

third Sundays. The Bible Studies of the month took place on Tuesdays 8th

, 22nd

with

the group's studies continuing in the Gospel of St. John. On the second Sunday Rev

Steve chose to be very topical because he led an appropriate service at the beginning

of Christian Aid Week. He showed the congregation two short films, and mentioned

his first subheading “Christian Aid providing shelter”, for example they built a house

in a hurricane torn country which saved 54 lives. Rev Steve also gave the amazing

fact that there are now 65 million displaced people in the world, who have either been

forced to move to a foreign country or to a different part of their own country. He

then declared another subheading “he is my shelter from the storm”, and thirdly “my

shelter is your shelter”, the modern interpretation being “The Chapel should be a place

of shelter from the storms of life”.

After starting the third Sunday morning service, Rev Steve handed over to Sharon &

Johannes (daughter and son in law of the chapel Secretary) who spoke about their

work as anthropologists in West Africa. They showed slides of the village where they

live and work. They spoke about the Christ we share, showing pictures of how Christ

is portrayed in different countries of the world, and inviting comments. The artists'

paintings included the Korean Cross, The Last Supper, The Calming of the Storm, He

Came Down with the Dancing Christ, Two People Carrying the Cross, Jesus in

Majesty, the Palm Sunday image, and the western iconic Robert Powell as Jesus. All

the above clearly shows that peoples in various parts of the world have their own idea

of what Jesus looked like and who is to say that our concept is the correct one!

On the fourth and last Sunday morning of May, Rev Steve spoke about The Parable

of the Sower, with the very familiar theme of seed falling on paths, rocky ground,

amongst weeds, and the other fell on good soil. In explaining the significance both

spiritually and in today's life, he unusually likened the meaning of the parable to a

steeple he had recently seen with plants from seed growing out of it, the seeds

presumably dropped by birds. He thought this parable could be both encouraging and

discouraging. Sometimes in church we are encouraged to sow seed, but it may lie

dormant, and later spring into life with God bringing the harvest.

In the evening there was a Joint Service hosted by Providence Chapel, Howey led by

Mr. William Powell. Members from Howey and Pentref contributed to the service

with poems, and singing. In his sermon William spoke from Deutoronomy, and the

Israelites spending forty years in the wilderness. He referred to manna and not living

on bread alone, God's promise to lead his people to the promised land from the

wilderness.
