Imam Qari Muhammad Ismail of Sheffield

The summer holidays are nearly over and young people’s thoughts are turning to preparations for return to schools, colleges and universities in their quest for academic qualifications. A new chapter of life is about to unfold itself, there will be new friends to be made, new places to be visited, new experiences to live through and new challenges to be faced in the coming year. Although a Muslim’s life is always within the limits laid down by Allah (swt) but we feel that this may be an opportune time to remind ourselves of the following Hadith of the Prophet (pbuh):

"Lo! All of you are leaders and shall be questioned on the day of Judgement in respect of your trust. So, the king is a head unto his subjects and shall be questioned in respect of them, the husband is a head unto his households and shall be questioned in respect of them, the wife is a head unto her husband's house and the children, and shall be questioned in respect of them all; the servant is a watchman

unto his master's effects and shall be questioned in respect of those. So you are all shepherds and you shall be questioned in respect of that entrusted to you." – Bukhari-Muslim Young people are therefore reminded that they are ambassadors for their religion and role models for the coming generations of Muslims hence their conduct should be exemplary in all spheres of life. Like all Muslims, they are expected to:

    • Be true to their faith • Be honest and truthful in their dealings

with others • Work hard to realise their full potential • Do not bully anyone or be bullied by

anyone • Be close to parents, teachers, brothers,

sisters, community and the mosque Remember that any activity that is forbidden does not become permissible because it is widely accepted.

  • A total of 36 different religious, educational, trade union, and neighbourhood organisations have participated in the Birmingham Citizens community dialogues. The dialogues, which were attended by the Birmingham Central Mosque, examined the pressures on families and the community. This was a unique opportunity for people to begin to get into a relationship and explore the possibilities of acting together. An array of issues arose concerning our families. Some of the most prominent issues that were discussed were the quality of affordable housing, a breakdown of values and loss of culture, low wages and poverty, community safety and drug dealing, and the rising cost of higher education. At the core of these conversations, there was consensus that we share some common values and that we need to come together to address these issues, to build relationships that are meaningful, and to share the resources that we do have. The proposal is to build a new kind of organisation (Birmingham Citizens), a broad based community organisation that is citywide and has the capacity to train leaders, unite our institutions, and act in the sphere of public life.

Broad based organisations are perhaps best described as vehicles for everyday people to have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives. They are vehicles used by institutions to develop leadership, engage the community around them, and build lasting and meaningful relationships with other institutions with similar values. In the words of one organiser, “Community organising provides the vehicle by which elements of knowledge, skills, and experience are attained by families and neighbourhoods.” The goal is to build a permanent and meaningful alliance of institutions through an organisation that has the capacity to act and deliver on quality life issues. For more information on Birmingham Citizens please contact Kirk Noden or Faraz Yousufzai on 0121 449 2626 or email: [email protected]

The character of the Prophet Muhammad as A’isha shares in a sound Hadith: ‘The prophet of God never struck a servant of his with his hand, not did he strike a wife, an animal or anything except when he was striving in the way of God. Nothing ever received harm from him, nor did he ever avenge himself except if the sacred things of God had been profaned. If these sacred things were profaned, nothing could allay his anger until God should be avenged. Whenever presented with two, one easier than the other, he always undertook the easier unless that is sinful. If it were sinful he would be the farthest of people from it.’

We would like to thank our congregation for their generosity towards the suffering people of both

Bangladesh and Sudan. Collections at the mosque for the two causes raised over £6,000. The faithful raised

£3,000 for the refugees and homeless in Darfur, Sudan which was donated via international charity Islamic Relief.

An emergency appeal at the mosque for the victims of

the Bangladesh monsoon floods raised £3,265. The appeal was called by Baroness Manzila Uddin of the

House of Lords along with well known personalities and religious leaders including Moffazal Karim, Dr. Hany El-Banna. Lisa Aziz, Lord Adam Patel, Lord Nazir Ahmed,

Kerry Pollard MP and Mohammed Sarwar MP. Chairman Dr. Mohammad Naseem, who is also on the

team, said: “In Bangladesh 2 million are homeless, 80% are under water. This is a tragedy of colossal

proportions. Every person with an interest in humanity should be helping them.”

The money raised for Bangladesh was donated via the House of Lords Appeal and the Al-Ameen Foundation, based in Birmingham. Donations are still welcome via the mosque office for both the Sudan and Bangladesh

    appeals.

Local youngsters Mustafa Audhali of Knowle in Solihull and Khurram Yaqoob of Birmingham have begun a 2,500-mile bike ride from London to Jerusalem.

The Cycle for Peace is a sponsored 8-week trek across Europe and the Middle East to help raise money for Palestinian charities and to promote peace and justice between Israel and Palestine.

Around 30 cyclists left London and will be joined by a further 200 along the way. Mustafa and Khurram recently raised sponsorship including £2,500 by way of donations from mosque worshippers.

To find out more about the sponsored challenge or to help in any way, contact Laura Abraham on: 07941 056616 or visit www.thepeacecycle.org. You can also send messages of support to Khurram or Mustafa by emailing: [email protected].
