FROM THE EDITORS DESK I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the past three years for my position as Editor of The Good Oil. I have certainly learnt a fair bit more than I did before regarding things like Copy and Paste, downloading photos from emails, as well as some from the www. Google. I would personally like to thank those who have forwarded their reports on our events, our roaming Photographers, plus the members who have forwarded Jokes, funny captions, etc. which have helped at times to fill in empty spaces in the Newsletter. I would in this part like to thank members Glenn Towndrow and Neville Maxwell for ticking a couple of events on my bucket list. Namely Glenn for organising the Great Ocean Road Trip, and Neville who organised the East and West trip of Tasmania. I really had a “Ball” and thoroughly enjoyed myself as did the “Man Magnet!!” I’d also like to thank the Newcastle Restored Club members, they are really a great bunch of people always willing to help someone in distress, or just needs a hand at something. I’d like to wish the Committee Members both current and new Committee Members all the very best in their positions, and I’m looking forward to catching up with members on runs and outings coming up in the near future when possible……….. Cheers to all………Roslyn.

A CELEBRATION FOR THE LIFE OF

DONALD BARRY HUGHES. 9th June 1935 – 6th June 2019

Our Vice-President represented members of the Newcastle Restored Vehicle Club including memories he had of Barry. Barry joined our Car Club in 2001 some 18 years ago. He has been an excellent member and always put his hand up for anything and everything that he could. His 1950 Hillman and him were always a welcome sight at all our runs and events. He found his Hillman at Mudgee, where Barry and Cindy were living at the time. Together they restored the car, and did a terrific job. Barry was a fitter by trade and I was working with him at Steggles at one time. He was a Maintenance Fitter, solving problems, repairing machinery and generally keeping the place running smoothly. He was very good at his job, but unfortunately Barry injured his shoulder and could not continue to work there. This was a big hurdle for him to get over, but Barry being Barry he soldiers on, and moved to Mudgee with Cindy where they built a new home on an acre. Barry will be sadly missed by all our Club members, his personality, humour and commitment will always be remembered. We would like to offer our Condolences to Barry’s wife Cindy, and all of Barry’s Family. Barry forte the good fight and he may be gone, but he won’t be forgotten. GOOD BYE MATE. Terry.

OUR HERO OUR DAD

You held our hand when we were small, you caught us when we fell.

You’re the hero of our childhood And our later years as well.

And every time we think of you,

our hearts still fill with pride, Though we’ll always miss you Dad,

We know you’re by our side.

In laughter and in sorrow, In sunshine and through rain.

We know you’re watching over us,

Until we meet again.

Wow, what a perfect day this was, not too hot, not too cold, but just right in more ways than one, with 14

cars a mixture of both Classic and Moderns, which I think is great to have this mixture of cars, all count with

many members getting older, so sometimes distances make it easier for all members to attend, we don’t

distinguish, all are welcome, as the aim is to encourage members to enjoy and have fun, it is the

participating that is important. All up 26 members including 1 visitor Ann who cruised up to Chinamans

Hollow for Morning Tea, where the usual cakes and slices were shared. We also met up with a group from

the 4 x 4 Club, who also stopped for Morning tea, so stories were shared on the cars, a 1939 Chev stopped

when he found our cars to have a chat and find out what club we were with. I found a Dragon on the way to

the Park, while Rudy performed a good deed to a Damsel in Distress, who had hit the concrete barrier on the

Bridge.

Always a great place to stop, Council has done a lot of work on the Children’s Playground, with Sails now

giving off shade, the water pond, was drained to allow the re-structure around the edges safer, by putting in

bit SANDSTONE blocks around the edges instead of the rough stones there now, so no ducks etc. this time,

but we did have some Willie Wag Tails. Love the Weather Rock, it will be a great place to stop again when

the park is finally fully upgraded.

After Morning Tea, off we headed again, to Millbrook Estate Winery for a Wine Tasting and Lunch, wow

all I can say is that we were amazed at the Victorian, settings, Gardens, and more, we had a great Wine

Tasting, The room is set up to allow the Wine Makers Chris & Paula White, to give wonderful explanations,

on each Wine, Liqueurs, Brandy. Millbrook Estate was established in 1996, with a Victorian Sandstone

Cottage which is over 150 years old. They have a comprehensive planting of Shiraz, Chardonnay, grapes, as

well as a fully functioning underground Cellar to keep the wines etc, in perfect temperatures. Now they also

produce a lot of Fortified Liquors, including one they call Red Dragon Chilli Wine, which the base is 300

proof, so just a sniff is enough to heat you up. We even made friends with one of their Cats, who purred

loudly for attention.

Now some of the outside Displays around Millbrook, is absolutely stunning, including the Old Barrel on a

trailer, that Brian Jackson was gob smacked about, as the wheels are an exact match to his 1929 DeSoto,

which he has never been able to source from Swap meets, he also found another Wheel complete with a

Brake Drum, yes he was drooling over them, he was waiting to talk to the owners. Good luck Brian, who

also drove his 1989 Blue Mitsubishi. More photo’s on Facebook. The Rare and Valuable Certificates where

presented to the owners Chris & Paula White of Millbrook Estate, as well as Wayne Brentnall for always

coming along to the Mid-Week runs. Next month’s run on the 17th

July, is to Victoria Hotel Hinton, leaving

Maccas at Edgeworth at 9.30, so come along, you just never know what we might get up to.

NRVC Luskintyre Airfield Visit

Saturday, 22nd June 2019

Via Morpeth

Risking the weather forecast for the day with a planned 8:30am departure from Hexham Macca’s, we were a little

late departing, minus our President due to car failure. 18 NRVC cars set off for Morpeth, our morning tea / early

shopping break destination.

The route was planned to meander through Raymond Terrace, Seaham and back down to Morpeth, entering via the

spectacular old bridge. Verbal instructions of the route were (so I thought) very straight forward, indicated by all

confirming they understood where we were going.

A group of “lead” cars arrived at Queen’s Wharf Park at Morpeth just before 9:30 - to find a group of “trailing

vehicles” already there. The tail vehicle - Terry and Mary in their little old Morris - arrived some 20 minutes later.

They had been gathering wandering vehicles and guiding them back on track towards Morpeth. The final vehicle,

Gerald and Doreen Hide, required a personal escort from the little old Morris via back roads and private properties

and treks along the banks of the Hunter river.

The early arrivals suffered the consequences of their mistake by taking the shorter, more direct route. Not only did

they miss out on the beautiful scenery of Nelson Plains, Seaham, Wallalong and Hinton, they had to endure the very

cold early morning nip in the air whilst waiting for us to arrive. This was the reason the trip was planned the “long

way round”.

What looked like a bunch of people in pyjamas and beanies gathered to have their BYO morning tea. Those more

venturous climbed the hill and wandered back into Morpeth for a hot coffee. Some shared their wealth via their

credit cards at the wide selection of shops. An hour was planned as the action at the airfield typically does not start

until around lunch time at this time of the year.

Natalie returned to the Park with a large bag of goodies stating she had spent far too much due to the length of the

morning tea break, stating the NRVC should be held responsible. A claim for reimbursement of her excessive

expenditure is expected to be presented to the Treasurer shortly.

During morning tea a screech of tyres and flying loose gravel announced Frank’s arrival in the (now operational)

Mercedes. He proudly walked over praising the efforts of joint troubleshooting with the NRMA technician,

determining the fuel pump relay had failed. Frank producing it from his pocket - the biggest relay I have ever seen.

Jumper leads were made to by-pass it.

Ken and Vicki visited us at the Park whilst walking their dog. They had other commitments later in the day and could

not join us at the airfield.

Most had gathered back at the Park earlier than expected. We completed another “straight forward” briefing for

the second phase of our trip, planned to pass through East Maitland and Rutherford directly to Luskintyre Airfield. It

was overlooked that Colleen and Bill had not returned, a realization we did not make until arriving at the Airfield!

Fortunately, our tail gunners Terry and Mary caught up with them before they left.

Traffic through Maitland was a challenge, especially at the new round-a-bout at Maitland station. A long queue

slowed our progress with the lead cars travelling much slower to allow “catch up”. This created some anxious

moments for me as the lead vehicle with frustrated “tailgaters” riding the rear bumper. I pulled across to allow an

Page 13: The Newsletter of the Newcastle Restored Vehicle …All had a great time. Raffle made $193.00 Thanks to raffle sellers Leanne and Sandra. GENERAL BUSINESS: President Frank thanked

annoyed driver past, realizing I had just driven past the turnoff to Luskintyre - distraction at the most crucial time of

the whole journey!

We therefore saw more of the countryside than expected, including the turnoff to Allandale Road. A large U turn

bay at the top of the next hill allowed a safe return. My “excuse” for this diversion, as explained after our arrival at

the Airfield, was that I wanted to show them an alternative route home via Allandale Road – the shortest way to the

Hunter Expressway.

On arrival at the Airfield we were welcomed by one of the local pilots, ably assisted by Quida, Michael, Seth and

Maggie. They had travelled directly to the Airfield. A more surprising welcome awaited us at the bar of the Pilots

Association Headquarters (a tin shed) where a variety of aviators and their friends, including Australia’s first

astronaut, were well primed with stories to tell.

These stories flowed throughout the day. We were free to visit the hangars, workshops and museum at our leisure.

A wide range of aircraft were parked around the airfield, some starting around us, taxing, taking off, making passes

overhead or landing throughout the day. Pilots and aircraft engineers also visited the NRVC vehicles with mutual

stories being exchanged between like-minded mechanical persons. In real terms, there is little difference between

our NRVC motor vehicles and the aircraft of that same era.

An unexpected surprise was a visit from Barry and Zira Scarr. Most will know Barry has been in hospital suffering

lung issues. He was released only a few days earlier. They made the journey from Toronto, staying much longer

than expected. Barry enjoying the outing immensely, attempting to arrange a flight just prior to leaving, but

unfortunately it was too late. This is now set in place for Barry’s next visit to Luskintyre.

A big “Thank you” to all those who “lingered longer” to greet Barry and Zira on their arrival and spend time with

them. It was greatly appreciated.

Reunions were also a highlight on the day. My friend Steve, a fellow 1971 apprentice at Qantas, turned up along

with 2 other old time mates. We had not seen one another for 40 years. As it turns out, Steve is Terry’s cousin.

They also had not seen one another for 40 years. Experiences were relived and there are sure to be many more such

meetings and stories shared in the future.

Terry and I were privileged to tour the workshops and hangars with Steve. He has worked at Luskintyre building

aircraft. I hope to be involved in such a project for the Flying Doctor Service in the near future.

The children also had an exceptional day. Maggie and Seth were very excited at the time of our arrival having

already spent time with some of the pilots and their aircraft including time in the

cockpit of an aircraft.

A bonfire and spit roast was set up for the evening. Unfortunately the weather

turned just on dark. We chickened out and adjourned to a nice warm lounge room

at a friend’s place for an evening of aviation reminiscing. A 50 year reunion is

planned for 2021 with more than 200 of our aviation engineer mates attending.

A total of 20 cars and 38 NRVC people attended. I trust all enjoyed the day. For

those who could not make it, I hope to see you there next time.
