The delta and the valley

The delta and the valley are the twomain parts of the Nile river.

The valley is 4200 miles long. and from 0.5 to 13 miles wide.

The Nile floods once a year overthe valley.

Agriculture

• The Nile river floods for about 10 weeks.

• When the flood water recedes, it leaves behind a layer of fine black silt, which was the fertile soil that Egyptian farmers used.

• The Egyptians saw the new silt as a gift from the Nile.

• They were growing wheat, barley, lettuce, onions, peas, and lentils.

• They also grew figs and other fruits.

Transportation

• The Nile river was a busy highway with riverboats carrying people, animals and goods from place to place.

• The simple boats were made from papyrus held together with rope.

• Bigger boats sailed in the middle of the Nile, where the water was deeper. These boats were cargo boats made from wood.

• These boats sailed North down-river using the Nile’s currents, or South, heading up-river using the winds from the Mediterranean Sea.

Animals

• Fishing eagles are found along the Nile river.

• Crocodiles are common on the banks of the river and are the most dangerous animals.

• The baboons and ibis were sacred animals.

• Hippos are found along the Nile and are the Egyptian’s most feared animals.
