It’s What We Do -

Aloha and reflections from the lanai…’cuz yes, the Pinion editor’s deadline approaches! Presidents learn early…not nice to mess with the Pinion deadline! Besides, coming on the heels of Mary Lynn’s great photos of the October 31 meeting and Feed the Hungry inspires thoughts of…what else…getting ‘er done!

Mahalo and well done to President elect Steve Landon…looks good in coat and tie, yeah?! Props to what appears to be a new song leading duo, Daren & Sandra Young, in matching black no less…Joe Barton’s Blue Badge…and a stellar example of Niles Rotary giving back to our community through Chili Cookoff grants presented by Chief Chili head Daren…and a longer look back at October reveals just how full our plate continues to be…with multiple courses! Got Community Service? Look at Ghost House set-up, Feed the Hungry and TWO Make A Difference Day projects at Sabercat Creek and City Hall…Joe Barton submitted the Blacow School project DDF (District Designated Funds) request to District, which has been accepted with a check to arrive soon …Bubba has us on a roll! How about a taste of International projects? Manuel reminds us that the Guatemala kitchen is almost done, the DDF grant to District is submitted, here comes the Bullride in November, and our Niles Rotary club and Foundation Boards approved a request from our Rotarian friends and gracious hosts in Ponta Delgada, Azores to help fund a global project to improve their hospital’s oncology unit…funded from our Niles Rotary Foundation. IT’S WHAT WE DO (continued) Past president and Program Chair Kimberly blended in past RI Director John Blount’s energetic message to lead off the month’s programs, Newark Rotary Past-president Mike Jay took us on a John Muir trail adventure, Aileen Chanco reminded us that Niles Rotary supports a wonderful chamber music experience for our community’s young people through Music at the Mission, and Mexico’s Victor Belendez shared the thanks of children in Mexico for our Rotary Foundation support as our Partner in Service. Add a dash of new members Ameena Saeed and Orlando Tavares, with new faces checking us out every week…stir in Paul Harris Fellowships for Mary Jane Hodges (with the surprise engagement ring revealed…bigtime congrats!), as well as the Boudames, Louie, and Hughes families…celebrating our Niles Rotary “Star” Otis Highbaugh ‘s 34 years of service as we also wish him well as he moves closer to family near Sacramento…a fine example of getting ‘er WELL done! Soooo… here comes November, Rotary Foundation month and the holiday season…celebrating and giving thanks for friends, family…time to slow down, right…NOT EVEN! This is NILES Rotary…John and Holly continue to encourage Rotary Foundation giving…we’ll take down Ghost House, party with Otis at Merrill Gardens, join our Newark Rotary extended family to feast on crab and support their fundraiser, then Ride the Bull the next day. We’ll recognize our Niles Rotary veterans on November 7 in advance of Veterans Day, join in fellowship and support our newest members at November’s Mentor Check-in at past-president Rakesh’s home. Did PE Steve say RR & A? Reverse Raffle planning begins November 12…RI Sydney plans rolls out November 6… Further stirring the pot… did we mention TWO of Rotary International’s finest, most entertaining and inspirational speakers will join us this month for lunch…Past District 5170 Governor Brad Howard from Oakland Sunrise on the 14th and the incomparable Cliff Dochterman. on the 21st. True, we are dark on Thanksgiving Day…enjoying family and filling plates of a little different variety…before we refill our Niles Rotary plates for our December 4 Chamber Mixer under Adam Moura’s leadership…Salvation Army Ring the Bell led by Sandy Stabile… spreading blessings through Pizza With Santa under Rose Evernden-Andrade, Super Elf Judy Zlatnik, Niles Rotary Santa and a host of Niles Rotary elves…I think I just wrote my December column! Lots to do, many ways to feel the energy, countless ways to get ‘er done…here we go! Prez C

NILES ROTARIANS IN THE NEWS

• Drivers for Survivors (Sherry Higgs) has been nominated for the Silicon Valley Awards, in the non-profit category.

• “Fremont is Building a Burgeoning Art Scene” – this eye-catching headline refers to the online (fremont.gov/art map) map of the City of Fremont’s 56 works of public art, prepared in conjunction with the Fremont Cultural Arts Council (Margaret Thornberry, and before her service as President, Dick McKay).

• Fremont Bank (Brian Hughes) has been recently honored by the Alameda County Green Business Program, having achieved the status of a Certified Bay Area Green Business); they join other Niles Rotarian’s businesses that, over the years, have achieved that status.

• And Breaking News – this just out – Daren Young will be District 5170 Area 3 Assistant Governor in 2014-2015!!!

NILES ROTARY BULL RIDE

To benefit our Rotary International projects in Guatemala (the school construction project) and in Kenya (Mission Segera). Manuel is taking sign-ups for bull riders! Anyone can ride – the speed of the bull is adjusted to one’s inclinations and talents. Once we sign up, we will get information about the website, with our this year’s photo, and we can then solicit donations from folks who either believe in our funding needs, or who cannot believe we are doing this! Check out the website: nilesrotarybullride.dojiggy.com Here are just some of this year’s riders: Audrey, Paul, Joe, Nancie

END POLIO NOW – check this website for the most up to date information on the drive to eradicate polio: www.polioeradication.org Polio Eradication Update – Polio Case Countdown – as of October 30, 2013 Here are some comparisons to last year: Polio Endemic Countries

A great concern is the outbreak of 10 cases of polio in Syria in October; Syria has been polio-free since 1999. A concerted effort is being made to vaccinate the children at risk. With so many Syrian refugees, there is concern that the disease will spread quickly beyond Syria.

I. Is it the TRUTH?

II. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
