And it gets me to thinking about all the strong, hardworking, committed, intelligent, successful, dedicated, fun-loving, and soulful women we are blessed to have in our club. Thirty-Five Actives and another Ten Honoraries. You mean so much to our club. You are a part of our life blood. Your contributions are invaluable. You help make the club what it is. NILES ROTARY SERVICE PROJECT

On Saturday February 29, Niles and MSJ Rotarians worked with Girl Scout Troop 31381 to make new planter boxes at Abode Service’s Sunrise Village. This service project continues on Sunday March 22 from 12:30 – 4 pm at Sunrise Village – Pizza and Plants. Jeff Schinkel will be taking signups.

REMEMBERING MARTY SPELLMAN 1933 – 2020

Marty Spellman passed away on February 10, 2020. He had been a member of Niles Rotary since 2006 with the classification of Physician; prior to 2006, he was in the Fremont Rotary Club. Marty worked as a radiologist at Washington Hospital for over 30 years. He was an enthusiastic world traveler and avid reader, belonging to several book clubs over the years – he loved to talk about books! He was always anxious to take up conversations with us at Niles Rotary, and took great interest in our activities. A celebration of Marty’s life is planned for August 1, 2020. An extensive obituary is in the February 16 East Bay Times, pg. B21, as well as in the Tri City Voice, February 18, pg. 29.

And we have gone 3 years without any wild poliovirus on the continent of Africa, which may soon be certified polio-free. But our fight isn’t over. There’s still work to be done in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the two remaining polio-endemic countries. (Editor’s note: Pakistan is especially troubling as you can see from the table above!)
