Greetings to all in the Name of the Risen Lord!May our worship celebrate the joy and hope, peace and presence, of our Lord Jesus Christ, raised to life for us. We welcome all, especially our guests. If you do not have a church home, please consider Divine Shepherd. We would love to have you as part of our family. Please take a minute and sign our guest book.

A prayer before WorshipThis is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone is moved; death is defeated; heaven is open. As Your disciples first saw and believed Your victory over the tomb, so give us joy in the promise You made and keep for us: because You live, we live also! Amen.

The Lord’s SupperThe Lord’s Supper is celebrated in the confession and gladness that, as our Lord says, He gives into our mouth not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord Jesus invites to His table those who trust His Words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. ( 1 Cor 11:28 ESV ) Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this alter.  Any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or hold a confession differing from that of The Holy Scriptures, this congregation, and the Lutheran Church~Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to speak with Pastor Sturzenbecher.

744 Amazing Grace sts. 1–51 Amazing grace—how sweet the sound—

That saved a wretch like me!2

Page 3: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web view2020/03/01  · 3Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will

I once was lost but now am found,    Was blind but now I see!

2 The Lord has promised good to me,    His Word my hope secures; He will my shield and portion be    As long as life endures.

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares    I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far,    His grace will lead me home.

4 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail    And mortal life shall cease,Amazing grace shall then prevail    In heaven’s joy and peace.

5 When we’ve been there ten thousand years,    Bright shining as the sun,We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise    Than when we’d first begun.

Invocation & ExhortationP In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the

Holy Spirit.C Amen.P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the

truth is not in us.3

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Confession of SinsP Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by

nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Old Testament Reading Genesis 3:1–211Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” 4But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” 16To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in

childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.” 17And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” 20The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living. 21And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Catechetical ReviewThe Third PetitionThy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also. How is God's will done? God's will is done when he breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God's name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.

Epistle Hebrews 4:14–1614Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Holy Gospel Matthew 4:1–11P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fourth

chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord.

1Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” 5Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 7Jesus said to him, “Again 9

Page 10: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web view2020/03/01  · 3Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will

it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 11Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

Agnus DeiC Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us.Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us.Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world; grant us peace.

657 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God sts. 1–41 A mighty fortress is our God,

A sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor’s rod    And wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foeHas sworn to work us woe.    With craft and dreadful might

12

Page 13: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web view2020/03/01  · 3Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will

He arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal.

2 No strength of ours can match his might.    We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight,    Whom God Himself elected. You ask who this may be?The Lord of hosts is He,    Christ Jesus, mighty Lord,    God’s only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious.

3 Though hordes of devils fill the land    All threat’ning to devour us,We tremble not, unmoved we stand;    They cannot overpow’r us.Let this world’s tyrant rage;In battle we’ll engage.    His might is doomed to fail;    God’s judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him.

4 God’s Word forever shall abide,    No thanks to foes, who fear it;For God Himself fights by our side    With weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house,Goods, honor, child, or spouse,    Though life be wrenched away,    They cannot win the day.The Kingdom’s ours forever!

636 Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness1 Soul, adorn yourself with gladness,

Leave the gloomy haunts of sadness,    Come into the daylight’s splendor,    There with joy your praises render.Bless the One whose grace unboundedThis amazing banquet founded;    He, though heav’nly, high, and holy,    Deigns to dwell with you most lowly.

2 Hasten as a bride to meet Him,And with loving rev’rence greet Him.    For with words of life immortal    He is knocking at your portal.Open wide the gates before Him,Saying, as you there adore Him:    Grant, Lord, that I now receive You,    That I nevermore will leave You.

3 He who craves a precious treasureNeither cost nor pain will measure;    But the priceless gifts of heaven    God to us has freely given.Though the wealth of earth were proffered,None could buy the gifts here offered:    Christ’s true body, for you riven,    And His blood, for you once given.

4 Now in faith I humbly ponderOver this surpassing wonder

14

Page 15: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web view2020/03/01  · 3Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will

That the bread of life is boundless    Though the souls it feeds are countless:With the choicest wine of heavenChrist’s own blood to us is given.    Oh, most glorious consolation,    Pledge and seal of my salvation!

5 Jesus, source of lasting pleasure,Truest friend, and dearest treasure,    Peace beyond all understanding,    Joy into all life expanding:Humbly now, I bow before You;Love incarnate, I adore You;    Worthily let me receive You    And, so favored, never leave You.

6 Jesus, sun of life, my splendor,Jesus, friend of friends, most tender,    Jesus, joy of my desiring,    Fount of life, my soul inspiring:At Your feet I cry, my maker,Let me be a fit partaker    Of this blessèd food from heaven,    For our good, Your glory, given.

7 Lord, by love and mercy driven,You once left Your throne in heaven    On the cross for me to languish    And to die in bitter anguish,To forego all joy and gladnessAnd to shed Your blood in sadness.

15

Page 16: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost · Web view2020/03/01  · 3Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; His grace has brought me safe thus far, His grace will

By this blood redeemed and living,    Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving.

8 Jesus, bread of life, I pray You,Let me gladly here obey You.    By Your love I am invited,    Be Your love with love requited;By this Supper let me measure,Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure.    Through the gift of grace You give me    As Your guest in heav’n receive me.

Thank the LordC Thank the Lord and sing His praise; tell ev'ryone

what He has done. Let all who seek the Lord rejoice and proudly bear His name.He recalls His promises and leads His people forth in joywith shouts of thanksgiving. Alleluia, alleluia.

770 What a Friend We Have in Jesus1 What a friend we have in Jesus,

All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry    Ev’rything to God in prayer!Oh, what peace we often forfeit;    Oh, what needless pain we bear—All because we do not carry    Ev’rything to God in prayer!

2 Have we trials and temptations?    Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged—    Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful    Who will all our sorrows share?Jesus knows our ev’ry weakness—    Take it to the Lord in prayer.

3 Are we weak and heavy laden,    Cumbered with a load of care?Precious Savior, still our refuge—    Take it to the Lord in prayer.Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?    Take it to the Lord in prayer. In His arms He’ll take and shield thee;    Thou wilt find a solace there.
