wheezing, sore throat and cough, among others.

Planning ahead and knowing which OTC treatments may

help is essential to keeping your summer gatherings pleas-

nt. Bring along a few over-the-counter treatments, like

ntacids or H2 blockers, when you head out for summer

estivities. People who have heartburn at least twice a week

might want to talk to their doctor about taking a proton

pump inhibitor such as omeprazole or lansoprazole.

    Diarrhea medications

f your summer vacation plans include traveling to new

nd far-ung places, its a good idea to be prepared for cer-

ain stomach ailments. Travelers diarrhea, a digestive tract

disorder that causes loose stools and abdominal cramps, is

aused by consuming contaminated food or water. Though

his illness is irritating and may disrupt a day or two of va-

ation, it usually isnt serious and can be treated at home.

To reduce your risk, be careful about what you eat and

drink while traveling. If you do develop diarrhea, it may go

way without treatment. If not, bismuth subsalicylate can

decrease the frequency of your bathroom trips and shorten

    he duration of your illness.

Tip: When buying OTC medications, you can often s

    money by purchasing store-brands. Store-brand OTCs h

the same efcacy as national brands and meet or exc

Food and Drug Administration quality standards, but

an average of 36 percent less, according to Perrigo, a M

    igan-based pharmaceutical company that manufactures

distributes most of the over-the-counter medications fo

under store-brand labels at leading retailers, grocers,

    stores and pharmacies.

The Heat Is On Outside, Keep Cool InsideARA) - As summer heats up, air conditioning bills can

apidly rise. As homeowners feel the heat, many are look-

ng for ways to save and stay cool.

Many U.S. consumers strive to conserve energy at home.

Forty-seven percent of Americans say they try to conserve

nergy all or most of the time, according to researchers atconoculture.

One way to help lower utility bills in the summer and year-

ound is to replace drafty or leaky old windows with new,

    nergy-efcient products.

According to ENERGY STAR, replacing single-pane win-

dows with ENERGY STAR qualied windows can sav

to $126 to $501 a year on utility bills depending on y

    location.

For example, the Pella 350 Series vinyl windows pro

durable, triple-pane insulating glass window options. Th

highly energy-efcient windows help keep your hcooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Vince Iturbe from Salt Lake City replaced a westward-

ing kitchen window and immediately noticed a differe

in the temperature inside his home.

The window faces the sun the better part of the day, an

was just plain miserable during the summer, he says. Im

o glad to be done with the heat.

The product wasnt the only thing Iturbe was delighted in.

Because of the Pella Promise, he found the right product

or his home and budget, had a no-mess, no-guess instal-

ation day experience and his investment is backed by the

otal care guarantee - Pellas exclusive warranties on the

    product and installation.

    Cool tips

Once energy-efcient windows are properly installed in

your home, try these inexpensive, easy ways to help keep

    your house cool.

    * Provide shade for east and west windows.

    * When possible, delay heat-generating activities like b

ing or dishwashing until the evening on hot days.

    * Use ceiling fans to circulate air to help make the ho

more comfortable without over-using the air condition

    * Seal air conditioning ducts and insulate ducts that

through unheated basements, crawl spaces and attics.

    * Install white window shades or mini-blinds. Mini-bl

can reduce solar heat gain by 40 to 50 percent, accord

to the American Council for an Energy-Efcient Econo

ional between-the-glass blinds or shades. Since theyre

between glass, they accumulate less dust and dirt than tra-

ditional roomside window treatments. Plus, they can be

losed when you are away to keep the heat out and opened

when you are home to let the light in. With their outstand-

ng energy-efciency and built-in window treatments, its a

Five Steps To Impact Community Health Positively Through Education

(ARA) - Health education is a rewarding career for m

You dont have to be a doctor or a nurse to become

volved. It takes professionals in accounting, resealaw and administration - as well as individuals who

joy working with people - all collaborating to improve

well-being of others. Why care about community hea

Several reasons, according to the Association of Sch

of Public Healths website, What is Public Health?,

the importance of improving access to health care, con

ling infectious disease and reducing substance abuse.

There may be no better example of a dedicated pu

health professional than Dr. Mine S. Seniye, chair of

Allied Health department at Brown Mackie College -

buquerque. She has traveled the world preparing stud

and health care professionals to care for underserved p

ulations. Here, she outlines ve steps to implement a

    cessful health program.

    Step one. Assess the community

Whether you want to enhance community health in a B

nian village or an inner city neighborhood, it is impor

rst to understand the community as a whole. Who l

here? Where are they from? What are their current health

practices? This cant be done long distance, says Dr.

Seniye. You cant just barge into a community and ask

What do you eat? You must take part in the society and let

hem accept you as a person.

Step two. Community organizationCollaboration with community leaders is essential to any suc-

essful health program. It is important to identify leaders and

takeholders in the community to recruit to the team, says Dr.Seniye. The Minnesota Department of Health suggests look-

ng for those who are in a position of power, or have already

made decisions on previous community issues, and those who

ctively volunteer. Collaborators from the community help

you understand the inner workings of the society.

Step three. Create and implement the program

When approaching any community to help, it is important

o speak in terms of what they already have, and adding

o it. Rather than telling them you want to x something

or change the way they do things, you must communicatehat you are here to enhance what they already have, Dr.

Seniye says. Suggest what may be lacking, and integrate a

olution into a program already familiar to them.

Step four. Assess the programAn advisory group formed at the outset can be invalu

to assessing the progress of your efforts. Keep the team

volved. I always share small successes with the group -

number of patients, where they were treated. I see the gr

roots community advisors as gatekeepers, she says. T

    keep us on track.

    Step ve. Maintain the effort

Eventually others come in to carry on. They must be pared to be effective in that community. This takes a c

petency that many dont have. They must be chosen c

fully, says Dr. Seniye. I nd that as I get to know peop

other cultures, and students who want to engage, I also g

know myself better. It is a growth process. Students teach

    something every day.

All the knowledge, resources, and ideas wont help with

tting into the culture you want to improve, adds Dr. Sen

Whether diversity occurs among the people stafng the

gram, or the people they serve, it is important to develounderstanding of others. Respect for their culture, beliefs,

ways of interacting is critical for success.
