The november 2018 Newsletter for First UMC Family and Friends First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC Sisters and Brothers in Christ: Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ! The One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who is to Come! I am reading Stephen Macchia’s Crafting a Rule for Life (IVP Books, 2012, $17.00) for my devotional reading this Fall. St. Benedict of Nursia (480-547) developed one of the first rules for those who joined him in living in the monastic communities among the hills of southern Italy. This rule was crafted to set the boundaries of their life together and encouraged those living in the monastery as they moved through their day. Developing your own rule of life is not easy, but it will help you learn how to say “yes” and “no” to the opportunities that arise in your life. Macchia invites me to ponder again commitments I have in my life: the roles of husband, father, and pastor, the people I share in rela- tionship with either by birth, marriage, work, or church life, the gifts I bring to the common table and the gifts I find there from others, all while paying attention to my deepest desires and how God’s vision for me is lived out in mission to a broken, bruised, an d battered world. In particular this month I am drawn to share my gratitude to God for the gift of my family, the opportunity to serve among the saints and sinners of First UMC, the pleasure of seeing our daughter find her place in the working world, and a life that blessed be- yond measure to offer to our God. Perhaps you may be reflecting on the same things. Even as I lift up these thanksgivings,, I also thank God for a mother and a father-in-law who are no longer with us. Their presence is felt as we gather to eat and share in table fellowship. We are in the midst of HallowThankMas, the 60-day pell-mell rush to Christmas with trick or treating in the neighborhood, stuffing our bodies full of turkey and stuffing, bad instrumental versions of familiar carols echoing as we make our Christmas purchases, and an occasional pause to “remember the reason for the season”. In the midst of November’s hectic and harried moments, I invit e you to stop with me and give thanks. On All Saint’s Sunday, November 4th, we will light candles to remember the saints in our congr egation whose lives are intermingled with our own. Their names are Susanne, John, Mabel, Sam, and Ava and their presence still linger in this church calling out, “finish our work”. We will remember the veterans who offered their lives and safety to protect the freedoms we enjoy as a nation on November 11. The next week, we will spend a Saturday assisting our sisters and brothers of East Rocking- ham UMC in feeding a Thanksgiving meal to thousands across Richmond County. The next day, Sunday, November 18, we will come together and carry our commitment cards to the altar as a sign of our love for the mission and ministry of our church. And once the Thanksgiving Dinner settles, we in the church point ourselves toward a manger in Bethlehem. This year our worship team is help- ing us live into the past as we recall what a Christmas Eve service might have looked like when Francis Asbury was our first bishop and First UMC one of the first Methodist churches in the United States. I wonder, what could we do individually and as a church to help us say a tremendous “yes” to the creator of all that in these days? How might we live in new ways as sisters and brothers with our Father God? How might we offer our lives again to God in thanks- giving for wiping away our sins at the cross of his son and our savior, Jesus Christ? When we pause to live into the answers to these questions, we will find ourselves walking in the way of the man from Galilee whose birth we celebrate. His Name is Jesus, our Lord, and our Savior! So go forth into this month to share God’s love with all you meet, so that those to whom love is a stranger find in you a gen erous friend. Show some love! Grace and Peace, ALLEN BINGMAN

First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC

Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Greetings in the Name of Jesus Christ!

The One Who Is, the One Who Was, and the One Who is to Come!

I am reading Stephen Macchia’s Crafting a Rule for Life (IVP Books, 2012, $17.00) for my devotional reading this Fall. St. Benedict

of Nursia (480-547) developed one of the first rules for those who joined him in living in the monastic communities among the hills of

southern Italy. This rule was crafted to set the boundaries of their life together and encouraged those living in the monastery as they

moved through their day. Developing your own rule of life is not easy, but it will help you learn how to say “yes” and “no” to the

opportunities that arise in your life.

Macchia invites me to ponder again commitments I have in my life: the roles of husband, father, and pastor, the people I share in rela-

tionship with either by birth, marriage, work, or church life, the gifts I bring to the common table and the gifts I find there from others,

all while paying attention to my deepest desires and how God’s vision for me is lived out in mission to a broken, bruised, and battered

world. In particular this month I am drawn to share my gratitude to God for the gift of my family, the opportunity to serve among the

saints and sinners of First UMC, the pleasure of seeing our daughter find her place in the working world, and a life that blessed be-

yond measure to offer to our God. Perhaps you may be reflecting on the same things. Even as I lift up these thanksgivings,, I also

thank God for a mother and a father-in-law who are no longer with us. Their presence is felt as we gather to eat and share in table

fellowship.

We are in the midst of HallowThankMas, the 60-day pell-mell rush to Christmas with trick or treating in the neighborhood, stuffing

our bodies full of turkey and stuffing, bad instrumental versions of familiar carols echoing as we make our Christmas purchases, and

an occasional pause to “remember the reason for the season”. In the midst of November’s hectic and harried moments, I invite you to

stop with me and give thanks. On All Saint’s Sunday, November 4th, we will light candles to remember the saints in our congregation

whose lives are intermingled with our own. Their names are Susanne, John, Mabel, Sam, and Ava and their presence still linger in

this church calling out, “finish our work”. We will remember the veterans who offered their lives and safety to protect the freedoms

we enjoy as a nation on November 11. The next week, we will spend a Saturday assisting our sisters and brothers of East Rocking-

ham UMC in feeding a Thanksgiving meal to thousands across Richmond County. The next day, Sunday, November 18, we will

come together and carry our commitment cards to the altar as a sign of our love for the mission and ministry of our church. And once

the Thanksgiving Dinner settles, we in the church point ourselves toward a manger in Bethlehem. This year our worship team is help-

ing us live into the past as we recall what a Christmas Eve service might have looked like when Francis Asbury was our first bishop

and First UMC one of the first Methodist churches in the United States.

I wonder, what could we do individually and as a church to help us say a tremendous “yes” to the creator of all that in these days?

How might we live in new ways as sisters and brothers with our Father God? How might we offer our lives again to God in thanks-

giving for wiping away our sins at the cross of his son and our savior, Jesus Christ? When we pause to live into the answers to these

questions, we will find ourselves walking in the way of the man from Galilee whose birth we celebrate. His Name is Jesus, our Lord,

and our Savior!

So go forth into this month to share God’s love with all you meet, so that those to whom love is a stranger find in you a generous

friend. Show some love!

Grace and Peace,

ALLEN BINGMAN
