November is in full swing! Throughout much of history, November has often been thought of as a somber month because it signaled the start of winter. People would spend the month storing up their harvest and preparing their food and homes in order to get through the winter months. As the last month of fall season, people still do things to prepare for the coming winter cold. But November is much more than a somber month where preparations for winter abound. It is the month we celebrate Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day in addition to being the month to recognize American Indian Heritage, World Diabetes Day, Aviation, and more.

Personally, November is one of my favorite months of the year. I enjoy being outdoors more than ever, yes, even raking leaves! I enjoy the warmth of a home in the evening with good smells from the kitchen, getting ready for Thanksgiving with family and friends, football parties, craft fairs and so much more. I have four sons and they tell me every year how much they enjoy the Thanksgiving meal I prepare. Each one has a favorite; stuffing, squash, sweet carrots, sweet potato bake, etc. It makes me hungry thinking about it! I’d like to share how I prepare my sweet carrots as all my family just loves them:

Peel and cut into 1-2 inch chunks 3# of carrots. Boil in salted water until tender. Add ¼ cup of butter and a ¼ cup of packed brown sugar (butter and brown sugar to taste) to the warm carrots and cover. Toss the carrots to spread the butter and brown sugar before serving.

I wish all a blessed Thanksgiving this year. Let us give thanks. Let us honor one another. Let us acknowledge and thank our American Indian brothers and sisters by recognizing their rich heritage. Let us be kind to one another. Let us recognize all veterans. Yes, November is a wonderful month in which to count our blessings and be thankful for all that we have.

Yours,Shannon

Recognizing Wisconsin Veterans Home at King Volunteer

Meet Michele Bolen

Michele came to us with the motivationof becoming a CNA and helping our Veteran population. She quicklyshowed that

she could be counted on in any capacity. With her drive and passion for becoming a CNA here at King, she was placed in Volunteer roles which would test her abilities and she passed with flying colors. Michele is hard working and I am certain will have no issues with being a CNA. Thank you, Michele, for all that you do and will continue to do in the future.

Home News

Thank Youby Tobin Wendt

When Francis Scott Key wrote the “Star Spangled Banner” almost 200 years ago, he called America, “land of the free and home of the brave.” Those words are as true today as they were then.

Throughput this nation’s history, America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen have bravely answered the call to defend our freedom, to aid our friends and allies and to turn back aggressors.

We can never fully repay our debt of gratitude to the more than 650,000 American service members who died in battle or the 1.4 million who were wounded. We can, however, recognize and thank the 25 million veterans still living today. These words are inscribed on the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C.: “Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and people they never met.”

Those words apply equally among many of our World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and Gulf War Veterans as well. They apply to today’s active duty service members - tomorrow’s veterans - who are helping to maintain peace throughout the world. It is our privilege to say “thank you” to all of America’s veterans, to let them know that we appreciate them for their service and honor them for their sacrifices. The price of freedom is high. We can not afford to forget those willing to pay it.

Come November 11, Veteran’s Day, we celebrate America’s veterans for keeping this nation “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

LifeLife is a strange thing. It can make you sing.

Or it can bring you down. And you will be wearing a frown.

When you are a child. You are not as wild.

Then you become a young adult. And you’re like a bird about to molt.

You go through all of the things teenagers do.Some even wear strange hairdos.

You feel love and the pain.Of things from your swain.

You have to figure out how to make it.To find your own grit. Then you fall in love.

And tell the others to shove.

You get married and buy a house. And get stupid and lift her blouse.

A child is born in the next year.Pretty soon, you can’t afford a beer.

Then the whole cycle repeats itself. That is life.

A constant loving and strife.Ain’t it grand?

WWII veteran Richard Gerlach from Ainsworth Hall had the honor and privilege to go on the Old Glory Honor Flight back in September. He was accompanied by Duffy Replogle (Korean Veteran), Andy Replogle, and Deb Bumpus.

Psalm 100: 4 - 5 Enter His (the Lord’s) gates with thanksgiving and His (the Lord’s) courts with praise; give thanks to Him (the Lord) and praise His (the Lord’s) name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations. (New International Version, Parentheses are mine)

Thanksgiving defined is the act of giving thanks, grateful acknowledgement of benefits or favors, especially to God. Praise defined is the act of expressing approval or admiration.

Thanksgiving and Praise….Two wonderful words that we have opportunity to give much thought and attention to, this time of year.

Thanksgiving….The Thanksgiving Holiday will soon be upon us and gives each of us an opportunity to pause, reflect, and give thanks for all the wonderful blessings we receive daily or have received this past year.

PRAISE….Whom do we express our approval or admiration to for our blessings?

What are you thankful for today? Whom do you give praise to today?

Throughout the scriptures, we are encouraged many times with the words, “thanksgiving and praise.” Why would this instruction from the Lord be so important to be communicated to us?

I have experienced and believe that thanksgiving and praise can do something very special to encourage our heart and life…and the heart and life of others.

Thanksgiving and praise can enlarge our gratefulness toward those people or things by which we are blessed. Thanksgiving and praise can enlarge our thoughts and gratefulness toward the Lord.

Take a moment, reflect, and think about a blessing that you have received as of late. Maybe, the blessing was an act of kindness from another person or friend. Maybe, the blessing of a new job or promotion. Maybe, your blessing was an insight from the word of God, which strengthened your faith. Maybe, a good health report or successful surgery or treatment. Maybe, the blessing was a visit or telephone call from a son or daughter. Maybe, the arrival of a new baby or grandchild. Maybe, the blessing was having an opportunity to serve others less fortunate than you.

As you received that blessing with a thankful heart, how did it make you feel? Did the blessing add joy to your day? Did the blessing enlarge your gratefulness?

Compare that experience to when we do not receive with a heart of thanksgiving. The blessing is not as significant. We can feel as if we deserve it.

Thanksgiving & Praise

We can take the blessing for granted. We can take it or leave it.

Thanksgiving and praise from our hearts can provide life to our souls!

Secondly, let’s think about from whom our blessings come, and the benefit we receive in giving and receiving praise.

James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. (NIV)

When we acknowledge this truth, that all good gifts come from the Lord because of His love and care for us, it does something within us. Our views about the love and goodness of the Lord enlarge. God becomes “BIGGER” to us. It becomes our desire to express our gratefulness and admiration to the Lord. We are moved to praise the Lord!

How do you feel when someone acknowledges you for what you have done on their behalf? Do you feel

loved and appreciated? Are you filled with a sense of awe as you realize the Lord has used you to bless another? Are you encouraged?

We are honoring our God, as we acknowledge Him with our thanksgiving and praise. We are also blessed as we receive thanksgiving and praise from those we serve with our hearts. There ought to be great blessing in both giving and receiving thanksgiving and praise!

The wonderful truth is that every day can be filled with thanksgiving and praise! Thanksgiving and Praise to the Lord, and to one another!

Psalm 100: 4 – 5 Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name. For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.

I pray that every day is “Thanksgiving Day” for you, and that you will be blessed as you express your thanksgiving and praise to the Lord and to your loved ones.

Pumpkin Carving! On October 27th, members used their mischievous creativity when getting ready for Halloween by carving some pumpkins. This year each member came up with a name for their creation and showed off their artistic talent by creating different theme jack-o-lanterns such as, the classic look all the way to a cat.

Birthday Celebration! We celebrated two birthdays with beautiful cakes in addition to decorated bouquets of edible flowers arrangements. Both Margaret Hammes, who turned 95, and William Longstaff, who turned 86, enjoyed the celebrations very much as you can tell by their smiles. They even got a little silly with the birthday hat.

Color RideThe Red Hat Ladies group of Olson Hall went on a scenic bus ride to take in the different fall colors of the area. This was a great way to see the leaves change before the weather got any colder. By the looks on the ladies faces, they enjoyed the trip very much.

50th AnniversaryOn October 24th, Olson Hall had a member celebrate a tremendous feat that not many people can say they have done. Rodney Jameson celebrated his 50th year anniversary of being a part of the American Legion. His family was by his side as he was awarded this honor.

Entertainment by Y-NotsOn October 14th, Olson Hall had the Y-Nots perform for the members. They sang and danced, not only while performing, but with the members too.

Coop by Michael Perry Follow Michael Perry as he struggles to take care of a rickety Wisconsin farmhouse, surrounded by 37 acres of fallen fences and overgrown fields. Soon, he and his wife welcome a daughter – Amy. Then Michael conveys his struggles with how to answer Amy’s questions about God. “Alternately hilarious, tender, and as real as pigs in mud, ‘Coop’ is suffused with a contemporary desire to reconnect with the earth, with neighbors, with meaning… and with chickens.”

Dead Aim by Iris Johansen A dam breaks in Arapahoe Junction, Colorado, and celebrated photo-journalist Alex Graham finds herself doing more than just snapping pictures. She gets into the mud with a shovel to help dig for survivors. This is when Alex discovers a conspiracy that will stun a nation. Her passion to reveal the entire story puts her in extreme danger. Alex barely escapes the first attempt on her life, but finds an ally in billionaire financier John Logan. Of course, Logan has his own reasons for keeping Alex safe from harm. He even assigns a bodyguard to protect her. If anyone can keep Alex safe, it is this bodyguard, Judd Morgan. The problem is, Morgan’s own checkered past has made him the target of an unseen assassin who dogs his every step!

Apologizing to Dogs by Joe Coomer Welcome to Worth Row. The Row is a place “where bathtubs double as lawn furniture, and adultery, bribery and larceny are as commonplace as the glass eyeballs that pop up in every yard – all that remains from the prosthetics mill that once sat on this land.” You will meet many characters in this novel, including 72-year-old Effie. Effie likes to keep a journal of her neighbors’ activities. She even follows stray dogs from house to house – a way to “spy” on the folks. Then there’s Howard Dog-in-His-Path, an Indian who keeps count of every pet buried in his neighbors’ backyards. When a violent storm strikes The Row, no man or dog will ever be the same again.

No Better Friend by Robert Weintraub This is the story of Frank Williams, an Air Force technician, and Judy, a purebred pointer. The man and dog met as prisoners of war during World War II. Judy, whose barks warned of approaching danger, became the war’s only official canine POW. “This true story of bravery, survival, and friendship between a man and a dog in wartime is as amazing as it is inspirational.”

The Black Box by Michael Connelly Twenty years after a night of extreme rioting in Los Angeles, the Open-Unsolved Crime Unit is tasked with clearing cases from that era. Detective Harry Bosch remembers that night clearly. It was the night he found journalist Anneke Jespersen shot to death in a dark alley. Her murder was never solved. Harry soon discovers that the gun that killed Anneke was also used in other crimes years later. His investigation takes him from some of the roughest areas of Los Angeles to distant battlegrounds where Anneke had once covered bloody battles. Hopefully, Harry will discover the “black box.” Hopefully, he will discover the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together and make justice possible at last.

My Husband’s Wife by Jane Corry Young lawyer Lily lives in a small apartment with her painter husband Ed. When Lily takes on her first murder case, she meets Joe, a convicted murderer to whom she is strangely drawn. Next, she learns that her marriage to Ed is based on a bed of lies, and she is shocked to think Ed is capable of telling such lies! “A modern spin on a classic bad-seed story, ‘My Husband’s Wife’ is a twisty, addictive thriller whose shocking finale you will never forget.”

Bullseye by James Patterson & Michael Ledwidge A heavy snowstorm in Manhattan provides the perfect cover for a team of lethal assassins as they prowl the streets, hunting for their prey. Meanwhile, the president of the United States comes to New York for a summit at the UN with his Russian counterpart. Detective Michael Bennett is called upon to trace the source of a threat that could ignite a war the likes of which the world has never seen. Bennett must find answers before the assassins’ deadly kill shot hits its mark!

Packer Day!On October 2, 2017 five members from Stordock hall went on a Tour of Lambeau Field and through the Packer Hall of Fame. Members were able to go to the highest point of the stadium and then to the lowest point of the stadium (on the field). Members were also able to go past the hallway leading to the Packer locker room and down into the Packer tunnel out onto the field. One member stated, “this is one of the things I can cross off my bucket list,”- but now he needs to go to a game so he can say he did that also. After the stadium tour and Hall of Fame, the group made a stop at the Packer Pro Shop and did a little shopping before heading over to Culver’s for lunch and then back to WVHK. “That was truly the BEST day of my life. Thank you all so much for everything you do for us. I don’t usually come to things like this but I will definitely start coming to more of these small group activities.” These were just some of the great responses from members after our fun filled “Packer Day!” Thank You to our sponsor -the AMVETS- for making this special trip possible for Bobby Fleener, Joe McGlin, Lee Wieland, Ron Jensen, and Dennis Kinney. You truly made their day memorable!

Checking Out a Taxidermy StoreA group from Stordock Hall went to The Taxidermy Store in Amherst WI. They were able to see the extensive collection of exotic animals up close and tour the store. During the visit, members were informed that they only purchase and refurbish the mounts. They don’t buy animals that are killed for trophy. They also make replicas instead of using real animals for some of their mounts. Members learned a lot of new information about the animals and asked if they could visit again. This was a must- see as you can get up close and personal with lions, bears, elephants, giraffes, and many other animals and be completely safe. We look forward to visiting again!
