Dear Faithful Partner, A total of 9,985,210 children in 112 countries received shoebox gift that were collected by Operation Christmas Child in 2013! We Praise God and want to “THANK” faithful partners, such as yourself. It was God working through you and people like you that chil-dren around the world received a gift of hope. With your gifts, prayers, service and sup-port we look forward to seeing thousands of lives transformed. In the last four years, over 1.1 million children have prayed to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior through Operation Christmas Child's follow-up discipleship program, The Greatest Jour-ney. The Heart of Texas Team would like to “Thank you” again, for your faithfulness to Op-eration Christmas Child. In 2013, the Heart of Texas received 16,206 shoe box gifts dur-ing National Collection Week! This is the most shoe boxes ever collected for our area! Please join us by praying for: 1.) the Heart of Texas 2014 Countdown Rally; 2.) National Collection Week Nov. 17-24, 2014; 3.) that God will be preparing the hearts of the chil-dren receiving boxes this year and; 4.) that God's name will be glorified through our faithfulness in the 2014 shoe box season. The Counselor’s Corner
When I brought my practice to Lakewood, I had every intention of writing handy little mini-articles for the newsletter on a regular basis. That was in January. So apparently, you can expect my next in-stallment sometime around August, 2015.
After nearly 10 months of folks whispering outside my office door (What does she DO in there????) and the occasional window peeper (you know who you are), I guess I should explain.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. What the heck is that, you might ask. Well, here are the bones of it. My next article will be more interesting, I promise.
Licensed professional counselors provide mental health and substance abuse care. Licensed profes-sional counselors (LPCs) are master’s-degreed mental health service providers, trained to work with individuals, families, and groups in treating mental, behavioral, and emotional problems and disorders. LPCs are typically employed in private practice, community mental health centers, agencies, and or-ganizations, and are employed within and covered by managed care organizations and health plans. LPCs also work with active duty military personnel and their families, as well as veterans.
State licensure requirements for professional counselors typically include:
possession of a master’s or doctoral degree in counseling from a nationally-accredited institu-tion of higher education, including an internship and coursework on human behavior and develop-ment, effective counseling strategies, ethical practice, and other core knowledge areas;
completion of a minimum of 3,000 hours of post-master’s degree supervised clinical experience, performed within two years, and periodic completion of continuing education credits/hours after obtaining licensure;
passage of the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and Texas Jurisprudence Exam
adherence to a strict Code of Ethics and recognized standards of practice, as regulated by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
The practice of professional counseling includes, but is not limited to, the diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders; psycho-educational techniques aimed at the prevention of such disor-ders; consultation to individuals, couples, families, groups, and organizations; and research into more effective therapeutic treatment modalities.
Counselors’ training in the provision of counseling and therapy includes the etiology of mental illness, and the provision of the well-established treatments of cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, and psy-chodynamic therapy. Counselors’ education and training is oriented toward the adoption of a truly cli-ent-centered, and not primarily illness-centered, approach to therapy.
My work with folks is very personal, with a strong clinical structure. I work by appointment only, and usually see about 20 clients per week. I take almost every insurance around, though I do decline a cou-ple of payers just because they are too persnickety to work with.
If you or someone you know are in the market for a therapist, I would love to visit with you. I can be reached at 254-931-1410.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spir-
it, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the dis-cernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpre-tation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
I Corinthians 12:4-11 I hope you all will take some time to read Laura Byass' article about what it is she does as a counselor. We decided to put her thoughts in the newsletter along with this Cotten Patch. I often get asked if I do “counseling”. And the short answer is no. However, there is some explanation in order. You see what I do is better called Pastoral Care. Pastoral Care is where I will journey with you during times of spiritual upheaval, both joyous and not. I will pray with you, offer you comfort, and listen to your spiritual journey. I will even offer the occasional scriptural advice to life in general. Counseling however is a therapeutic, and long-term mental health assistance and care. Some have suggested that I would be good at that, and maybe you're right. I know I could really enjoy that work, but here is the difference: I have, to date, one undergraduate class called “Intro to Marriage and Family”, one graduate class in seminary called “Intro to Pastoral Care”, and one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (supervised pastoral care in a hospital setting). This is ver-sus the hours it takes to get a Master's degree in counseling plus the hundreds of hours of supervision as a new counselor under a licensed counselor. So I hope you can begin to see the difference. Recently our local paper did an article on a study that students graduating from Baylor's Truett Seminary were “not sufficiently trained” to do mental health care in the church. What they didn't really state is that, semi-nary isn't designed for that and never have been. Some pastor's, I think, see themselves as mental health care providers, mainly because of the lack of it in our communities, but un-less they've done the extra hours in training, both classroom and in the therapy room, they are not. What this doesn't mean is that I don't care or want to help. In fact, I care enough to pray with you and for you while referring you to a licensed to get the real help you need. Oh and for what its worth I'm not doing your bypass surgery either. Peace, Pastor James
